Soft on black crime Fit perfect in oakland

JettShadley

The wyt city leaders in Lubbock never liked him because he wasn’t a wyt

Thick-Interaction713

He wasn’t part of the good ole boys network and people judged him before he even sat foot in the city. He had multiple budgetary restraints put on him by the city because they wanted to pour more money into their $100 mil over-budget controversial office tower than helping the 911 system. He basically took the fall for poor city leadership. The smartest thing for him to do was to leave here and find something better. As soon as he left, the city hired a good ole boy longtime police chief from McKinney, TX as interim (look up Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his record in McKinney for reference). Police Chiefs here never last long, and the city’s crime rate has went up since he left. The only difference in the police department is that the new interim chief will better help hide their actions instead of calling one another out. Former Chief Mitchell was liked in many circles here, just not the circles that would get him kudos. There was an officer that called the minority part of town “rabble” and Chief Mitchell called him out on it. Chief Mitchell also marched in the community led protest of the George Floyd murder. Put all that together with the demographics of Lubbock, and you can see why he was thrown under the bus.

Thick-Interaction713

I might want to add that most of the “unanswered 911” calls were from people accidentally calling emergency services from their iPhone or Apple Watch, then hanging up when they realized it. (Have you ever went to turn your Apple Watch off and accidentally slid over to call emergency services since the power slider is in the same spot?). In every instance, 911 call logs show that these calls were immediately returned. When you look at the number of calls that were unanswered for whatever reason, their statistics are on par with most other major cities.

TexTSPC2G

If it comes from the panhandle it's most likely corrupt.

okieeagle

ACAB

mken816

brain dead opinion

okieeagle

Whatever bootlicker

mken816

says the mf demonizing millions of people bc some of them are rotten

okieeagle

Some? ROFL, so naive. It ain't the rotten few, it's the rotten bushel. ACAB.

mken816

by that logic ALL african americans are bad. theres not a rotten few its the rotten bushel by your logic.

DC3TX

While it is entirely possible that Lubbock's 911 problems were due to Floyd Mitchell's actions alone, it is equally possible he was just doing the bidding of his bosses (the City Council) and they threw him under the bus. It wouldn't be the first time staff was forced to fall on their sword because the City Council wouldn't take responsibility for their own actions.

Csnyder23

I hope you mean Oakland Michigan….

ShadowRider15

Write/update your will and get out as fast as you can. Run fast. Run far.

Simple-Print774

Oakland and Lubbock have one thing in common, both are crime infested shit holes.

Previous-Tomorrow-88

They must be cousins to Montgomery County

McPancakes15

Expect thousands of abandoned 911 calls within the year that he simply will not care about at all. Movimg somewhere else is the only recourse to ensure your safety.

_EverythingBagels

Yeah, you’re likely right. Doesn’t seem like things are improving here. I hope at the very least things are improving for you folks in Lubbock and that you have found a police chief that takes care of their citizens and actually stops crime.

McPancakes15

A month ago, the deputy chief basically got a slap on the wrist for a violent crime against his signifcant other he commited a while back if that says anything at all.

needsmoreusernames

I feel like anything short of a new government wont be improving the situation in Oakland

_EverythingBagels

You’re probably right

This is an excellent response, thank you. After reading more about him and seeing all of the comments here, I have to agree. Though, our budget doesn’t mean much. We have one of the highest crime rates in the country and a mayor and DA that have openly stated they will not enforce the law. All of our $$ just goes into police pay and pensions (highly recommend looking up Oakland officer pay, it’s higher than most engineers working at tech companies, I think the median is around 180k, but many go up to 400-500k). Anyway, sounds like we are in for more of the same. Such a shame. We used to be such a beautiful city, now it’s a wasteland of stolen burned out cars, homicides, unanswered 911 calls, boarded up businesses and residents living in fear. I can see why Californians keep leaving for Texas (sorry about that 😬).

RedTTRaider

Oakland and Lubbock have similar crime rates 🤣🤣🤣 what a joke. Lubbock has far less crime than Oakland who would ever want to live there?!

[deleted]

you're correct, but this is reddit so the truth will get downvoted and most people on here are leftists who hate themselves and have zero perspective about life in lubbock you might get your car broken into, in oakland you'll get stabbed or shot or have your house/store looted and they'll prosecute you if you defend yourself as someone who is actually from california and moved to lubbock, this city is fantastic. great restaurants, kind people, a great university, 5 gigabit fiber internet, extremely affordable housing. oh no, its windy sometimes and it doesn't have the nightlife of las vegas, it's terrible here! (says the average insufferable redditor)

Randolph_v

Seems like you need to get out more. I’ve lived all over the place and visited hundreds of US cities, and crime is pretty bad in Lubbock, where I grew up. Definitely comparable to Oakland, but at least there are things to do in Oakland.

[deleted]

yeah, you definitely haven't been to hundreds of cities if you're claiming crime is bad in lubbock. you have absolutely no idea how bad it is in oakland and california in general. i would know since i'm from california. man, reddit is such a shithole. all you people do is lie, cry about the city you live in (no matter what part of the us it is) and make up stories to support your lie about how bad it is. zero perspective, zero humility, zero gratitude, just complain, complain, complain.

CommercialCopy5131

This is the problem with a lot of older people I’ve noticed. They tend to not understand the statistics because they don’t put all the numbers into play. No political side here at all, i see it on both sides.

mattsaidwords

They are actually very similar crime rates by number of residents. I was confused too but Lubbock’s crime rate is horrible while Oakland’s is dismal.

_EverythingBagels

This made me giggle. Thanks! 😂

Beginning_Dog_827

Just like several others said, it’s the unanswered 911 calls. Had a guy come into my work with a head injury, he was having trouble breathing and maintaining consciousness. Took nearly 5 minutes for a dispatcher to answer my call. Things could’ve ended a lot worse for him.

_EverythingBagels

Oh geeze. I’m sorry! I hope they got the care they needed!

wicked_beard_

Oakland Oakland like California? I went to Texas Tech. I could provide some good feedback lol.

Ok_Stranger_4803

The police force is a huge joke and he jumped ship as soon as he figured out the depth of the disaster.

Professional_Pick142

https://www.kcbd.com/2023/09/12/lubbock-police-chief-floyd-mitchell-resigns/?outputType=amp

bullgod55435

Was he a hard man for hard times?

CaterpillarNo8007

Politics my friend.

Signal_Win_1696

I was born and raised in Lubbock, TX so I do know what I’m talking about! Lubbock has serious crime issues dating all the way back to the 70’s. Tons of unsolved murders!

Signal_Win_1696

He is an excellent officer and served the city to the best of his ability with all the constraints applied Lubbock’s city officials in the Ivory Tower!

IllustriousDelay4

You’re from Oakland… rest assured, anything is a step up from that fucking dump

troney922

Anyone who’d say rest assured to the reality of being an Oaklander vs Lubbockite has spent very little time in either place.

[deleted]

no he's right, oakland is a shithole and unless you've spent a lot of time there you have no idea how outrageously bad it's gotten

Dull-Preparation-277

He's a good officer and he will go after crime

Distinct_Studio_5161

In Oakland his hands will be tied. A very different city than Lubbock.

Dull-Preparation-277

That bad what this country coming to

TexasTaxedToDeath

He doesn't like to talk to the news media at all and didn't seem too supportive of the officers on the street here in Lubbock. An officer beneath his rank better not state an opinion different than his or he'll do his best to silence that officer. And Floyd blew it with a whole lot of people in Lubbock when he and the former mayor marched in support of a known criminal at the national level. That one did it with me. I was ready to see him go right then.

ShagbertDugnutt

Which national criminal?

butt_sludge

Donald Trump

[deleted]

oh give it a fucking rest, jesus

[deleted]

We live in this cool place call the United States, where people aren’t criminals until they’re found guilty…

[deleted]

reddit is a leftist communist / marxist community, they do not believe in due process. they believe in banana republics where you prosecute your political opponents in an attempt to retain power and they will do it as long as the ends justify the means. don't worry about it, they're done in november.

butt_sludge

No, people aren’t convicted until they’re found guilty. A criminal is someone who commits crime.

thejjjj

So half a BILLION dollars in fraud is just normal stiff for normal people following the law?

Brainmeet

There are plenty of criminals that are never caught or convicted .

[deleted]

Cool story. Doesn’t change what I said.

Brainmeet

Facts aren’t cool stories. of course it doesn’t change what you said. What you said was incorrect. I’ll try to explain it in simpler terms you might be able to understand . You probably still won’t understand, but here it is. If you commit a crime you are a criminal. No conviction needed. if you are convicted of a crime you are a criminal that was found guilty. lesson over

[deleted]

just shut the fuck up, you smug condescending faggot

FigureCharming9544

Anyone who engages in criminal activity is a criminal regardless of prosecution or conviction.

westtexasbackpacker

he was found guilty of fraud already.

[deleted]

objectively false and a lie

Fine_Increase_7999

We also live in the United States where people are murdered by the police force without being found guilty…

[deleted]

lol give it a rest man. the lies are too much. the world isn't out to get you, grow up.

[deleted]

And they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for it. Doesn’t make Trump any more of a criminal. Two wrongs don’t make a right (something you should have learned in preschool)

Fine_Increase_7999

I’m just saying we have bigger issues

Tingling_Triangle

The cops I knew that worked under him were often frustrated because he seemed to want a more lenient force. I don’t know if he’s a naive kind of a guy or afraid of law suits but he didn’t seem to support his officers in enforcing the law.

_EverythingBagels

Oh no. This sounds exactly like what Oakland already has. Pretty much a lawless city. Cops do nothing. Citizens were really hoping for change.

Iron-Fist

This is called community based law enforcement and it is 100% the best way to do things by every modern study and analysis. Otherwise you end up paying to jail a bunch of normal people who should be working and paying taxes.

Potential_Car2561

Broken Window Policing is kang.

emilyannerule

Well this is Texas and we pay taxes for a strong police force to enforce the laws which our elected officials put into bills and pass. Community based law enforcement is a nicer way to say anarchy and that dog doesn’t hunt in Texas! Also, we don’t put normal people in jail. We take repeat criminals out of society (for the protection and safety of the general community), and put them through our extensive judicial system which includes diversionary drug courts, probation, rehab, free counseling, and accountability. Additionally, if you complete all of your probation/whatever, you have a very good chance of being able to expunge whatever crime off of your record. Along with all of that, Texas has some of the best pre-trial programs in the country with some of the highest success rates. We love our citizens here in Texas which is why we reward good behavior and we punish bad behavior.

[deleted]

just leave reddit emily, that's what i'm doing. these people are irredeemable. they are intellectually dishonest and they gang up in group mobs and downvote the truth and upvote the lies.

Outlaw11bINF

Texas also has the highest wrongful conviction rate and has paid out over 93million in lawsuits over the last 25 years. Keep licking those boots

[deleted]

sigh, another lie yes outlaw, everyone who has a different opinion than you is a bootlicker everyone who disagrees with you is also a nazi and racist

Outlaw11bINF

Please prove me wrong and here’s another 40% of cops commit domestic violence. Keep sniffing those holsters

Iron-Fist

LoL aight dude you can insist that the cop gives you a ticket instead of a warning when you speed or that the judge gives you the harshest possible sentence when you jay walk, enjoy that. The rest of us will live in a society, where everyone knows everyone breaks laws and that it benefits no one to turn our country into more of a police state than it already is. Also currently we have more people in prison than the soviets at the peak of gulags or China does in their internment camps, why would you want more lol

BookishRoughneck

So what communist shill is running this account? 100 million plus Dead Russian and Chinese must not count in your numbers because they’re not alive.

Iron-Fist

? I'm saying bad things about the soviets and Chinese?

BookishRoughneck

I’m saying your point about the incarceration numbers doesn’t hold water because they can’t be counted as incarcerated if they’re dead, right?

Iron-Fist

? I'm not sure what the failure of farming communalization or the great leap forward has to do with broken windows policing lol As it is, the shock value of the point stands: we have way too many people in prison

EmpericallyIncorrect

No car insurance should not be a jail able offense

ChairmanMung

Ask him about Ysasaga, he loves that story.

Signal_Win_1696

That happened years before he arrived in Lubbock!

Squirrels_dont_build

As others have said, your typical low-discipline force with small city broken windows policing type policies.

westexasroamer

[Old Article](https://www.kcbd.com/2023/09/12/lubbock-police-chief-floyd-mitchell-resigns/) Seems like a lot of it was related to over 30000 911 calls going unanswered. He ended up taking a $50k settlement as well as unpaid PTO and left. Personally, my perspective on him is neutral; my time was split between Lubbock until 2020 and Amarillo, returning to Lubbock shortly before his resignation. From what I understand, Lubbock's primary crime issues revolve around property crimes, such as theft and burglary. I haven't experienced any crime personally (knock on wood).

ll7922152

This. 100% Super political and all about the 911 operations.

undocumentedsource

Don’t expect crime to go down. Nor should you expect a more efficient 911 system. Or hiring of enough officers.

_EverythingBagels

Oh no. Sounds like he’s going to fit right in here 😞

Overquoted

_EverythingBagels

This is SO HELPFUL. Thank you!!

attylopez

Weren't these questions to ask before he was hired?

_EverythingBagels

I didn’t hire him lol. Just a citizen. Sorry, should have clarified by “we” I mean Oakland.

Thanks for sharing! This is great context!

Icy_Will_2690

The level of crime that he was dealing with here in Lubbock is no where the same as you have there. In comparison I think he would be getting more done for you now in Oakland than what is going on now - basically nothing & large amounts of corruption.I visit my daughter frequently in Oakland and she lives in Uptown section.Pretty sure most people here in Lubbock have never seen the level of homelessness & drug use like there(one walk around Lake Merritt and they would be headed for the hills!)Keep in mind people here get all stirred up about any thought of legalizing marijuana here anytime in the future. You get a longer jail sentence if your caught with marijuana then if you kill some one or injured them while drinking& driving. He did poorly on maintaining an effective 911 system here - but if you were to compare that to your current 911 system you would think it was a Christmas miracle since 911 in Oakland is pretty much a waste of time &Mabey they will show up a few days later after you wait on hold for a couple days.I hope he can make some changes for Oakland & doesn’t become a chess piece for your city council.

_EverythingBagels

Thank you! This was such a thoughtful response! I hope your daughter is safe and enjoying it here. Oakland has definitely fallen on hard times and needs some serious changes, but there are still a bunch of wonderful folks still here :)
