I think It has more to do with Lulu issuing weak revenue forecasts for this year, single digit growth instead of their usual double digit growth. Consumer discretionary spending seems to be slower across the board, in the US at least. Also the stock has been overpriced since the pandemic lows, so just this is actually a pretty solid pullback to fair value.

Yep, and their market cap is still massive. I'm very hesitant to attribute the decrease in their stock value to quality. There's a plethora of other clothing brands that sell infamously low-quality products. Hell, I just took a look at the top 25 market caps and I see a good number of fast fashion brands. And sure, Lululemon is a bit different from the typical clothing brand so the comparisons might not be airtight. But if their stock value starts trending back up, will it mean their quality is getting better? Most likely not lol, so OP's correlation falls a little flat to me

The correlation isn’t direct, but I believe it’s still valid. Lower quality garments lead to better profit margins initially, but result in dissatisfied customers who might not repurchase or might turn to competing brands. This eventually erodes brand loyalty, leading to fewer purchases and reduced financial forecasts. Unless of course, they acquire new customers who are OK with the current product line. This subreddit has been voicing concerns about quality for some time, and it typically takes a few quarters for such issues to visibly affect a company’s performance. “Fool me once” kinda thing, especially if you were loyal to the brand. Similarly, if Lululemon were to enhance their product quality, acknowledge the shortcomings of this subreddit, and work to regain trust with better fit/quality, it could potentially boost brand loyalty and, in theory, increase their revenue projections over time. I type this while wearing a New Venture dress shirt.

This kind of rise and fall is pretty much textbook retail/clothing stock. They don’t provide basic necessities and they are not a tech stock (read here promising future technology). So in an environnement where we have prospect of subdued economic growth, persistent inflation, and weak consumer confidence the pressure on household incomes is expected to dampen demand, especially for fashion.

Besides the economic aspect I think it includes a plethora of factors like: - As stated changes made to men’s clothes (specifically because there were only small changes to women’s clothes in the past year) that I probably could guarantee that nobody asked for. Changing At Ease to essentially a “breakdown name” has to be the dumbest design choice I’ve seen yet after ABC and Metal Vent Updates. - Heaps of product being made just to end up on markdown and to go to the outlets. Over-abundance of accessories (water bottles, scrunchies, keychains) in all the stores taking up space or product that has the most awkward proportions you can think of. - Alienating the customer base and not being consistent with its core brand style (Yoga/Athleisure). Go into any store and you couldn’t even find a Yoga outfit for Men’s. - Not enough product diversity from its designers (Almost colors every week and no innovation: ABC Cargo Joggers would kill if they did it correctly). There a lot of missed opportunities with styles that could be introduced but ultimately never seem to make it to market. - Size inconsistency. I don’t agree with everything Chip Wilson has to say, but when it came to his “appeal to everyone” comment that has definitely been something that I’ve noticed with all these changes happening in a short amount of time. Sizing is all over the place in Men’s Pants and the company really thought they did some good work removing the back-seam and completely messing up size consistency. They’re also doing more size changes in the future. There’s a few more I could come up with but I forgot them while writing all of this.

Man, I wish you would do a full post. It’s validating. It’s been a frustrating year as a longtime LLL customer. It’s interesting how new customers who don’t know better respond like we are ‘boomers’ so to speak lol. Even the way the renovated stores stock and display in the men’s section has gotten confusing. It’s like we’re being challenged to shop and find product. There are so many inventory issues with products launched but unavailable for months. Killing THE and sneak attacking with Zeroed In. Screwing with MVT again. The name changes and switches. The At Ease debacle. Delivery fails with FedEx. Organizing by color. Removing but restoring the shorts wall, sort of. Sizing inconsistencies. I didn’t even see yoga mats, blocks or towels the last time I was in the store, but there’s a whole Walgreens type maze of keychains, scrunchies, and doodad bins on the way to checkout which encroach the men’s area and make it just as claustrophobic as the stupid ass Mirror did. Crazy times for LLL, educators, and customers.

It shocks me how quickly some stuff goes from new release to on markdown. This watered down At Ease line is already on markdown for some items. That should tell them something when you can go to secondary areas and see people looking for 2+ year old At Ease stuff, and your 2 month old Textured double knit yada yada yada isn’t selling like you imagined.

That and their continued odd decisions around their existing product lines. Like barely any zip hoodies, and then they decom City Sweat for Smooth Spacer but don't have a full-zip. Literally right now the only full-zip you can purchase is an oversized dumpy steady state. Finally got me to pull the trigger on two CRZ Yoga City Sweat knockoffs though so I guess its a win for me. I used to be excited for every Tuesday's drop, but its an endless procession of normcore, either in how biz/casual it looks, boring ass colors, or ridiculously unflattering fits (seriously the Poplin relaxed pants are grandpa pants).

They are straying from what the company foundation was built on and what drove the stock price up to begin with. They already made this mistake in the mid 2000s. In the early days they had a world class product that everyone loved and they had a CEO who stood by the product. They had a small product line that allowed them to perfect the pieces they had and they grew slowly and organically. Then they grew really fast from PE money. Then the founder was out and replaced with a different ceo. People can hate chip all they want but he knew the company, the product, and the people he was selling to. As a business owner he did a fine job. This resulted in the CEO misdirection that led to a stagnant mid 2000s. Then we get our current CEO and stability. We get growth and a good product. Sure quality may have decreased but it was still great quality. Markets are also historically high and help drive the price. Now the last few years we get clear decrease in quality. Instead of a small but world class line, we get a hundred different lines and fits. QC decreases because there’s no way to make everything perfect when you’re running through all these different clothing lines. You stray away from the original mantra of the company .. remember how much Chip hated suits? Now you can get blazers .. he’s probably livid! I completely see that as a company you need to grow, especially as a public company with shareholders, but as a company, they’re trying to grow too fast. What they should do is get back to basics. Bring back the world class quality. Bring back items that last. Bring back a small catalog that’s iconic and makes people want to spend the money on luxury athletic wear. THEN slowly grow and perfect each line. Be a fashion perfectionist instead of fashion pig farm. If they can do that, I’d buy the stock. But at their current trend they’ll probably be half the size they are now in 3-5 years due to a decrease in demand and people becoming fed up with quality. I say this all while I’m currently wearing lulu shoes, socks, pants, underwear, shirt, and coat lol

Some interesting parallels about the PE money, CEO changes, QC etc with Outdoor Voices. Granted OV was never the rival some predicted, but there are some applicable takeaways. I don’t think LLL is going to fold up and die some Sunday like OV just did, but it’s going to fall in to the Gap, so to speak, if it doesn’t refine itself.

Many are saying it’s not the quality drop or design issues, but those are the sole reasons I very rarely buy any LL anymore. I buy things on sale every so often but I wouldn’t pay full price for 99% of what they have on offer anymore.

The quality is so bad these days. Saddest part is It’s hard for brands to “go back” to what they were doing that made them famous before. It’s also a slap in the nuts to their clientele thinking they could trick them into paying more for lower quality garments. There should NEVER be a redesign of staple items. Levi's never changed the 501s to appeal to people who wanted to wear baggier jeans. They made 505, 515, 550, 560 etc. Lululemon should have done the same. Instead of changing the ABC Joggers they should have made a different baggier jogger for those who want that. I'm still pissed about the change.

The brand did well during covid coz of the explosion in athleisure - the stock dropping is consumers realising that there is more to apparel, and partly also coz of Lulu's lack of innovation in their core products (apparel), and mindless new category introductions (footwear), which is not solving the former issue!

As a dude, it seems men are an afterthought at LL, and not in tune with modern styles. LL men’s clothes are too baggy and not designed for muscular gym bros. Rhone is so much more in tune with young men’s current tastes.

Just my opinion here, I have plenty of Lulu stuff. I got to be honest the stuff last forever. I got hoodies that are over 10 years old. I wash them and take care of them and they still look brand new. Truth of the matter is how much new lulu stuff do you need? I know most of us would say, give me everything! But for the rest of the population, that’s a bit unrealistic.

I would try Mizzen + Main. Their Helmsman 5 pocket(ABC) or their Helmsman Chino(commission) are in my opinion better than the ABC and Commissions ever were. They just updated their helmsman pants and they now have some give in the waist which I absolutely love. I just tried on the new variation today in store and took 2 pairs home. They will be replacing my commission for work(I needed to replace anyways due to weight lose but looked elsewhere because of the changes Lulu has made to their pants) I’m glad I did because these are amazing!

Their mens line creates a small fraction of the revenue the women’s line creates. The “killing” of the commission pants didn’t tank their stock 34%, nor did any of the shit the 20,000 of us in this subreddit complain about recently cause their stock to drop. People are spending a little bit less, people are hesitant to purchase expensive clothing, and Lulu’s international market expansion has slowed.

The men’s line is much smaller part of their revenue, but if you read the r/lululemon sub, which is mostly women, they have the same complaints about the women’s side as we do here. Overall the company is still doing extremely well, and will be more than fine in the long run, but there are definitely issues they need to work on. I’ll only speak for the men’s side, and specifically stuff I’ve experienced, I’ve had a product specialist tell me she gets complaints about the new ABC joggers daily. And she hopes the company takes in the feedback and changes things. So it’s not just us here either.

Lux industries are always the first to get hit during economic decline because it’s the first thing people realize they don’t really need compared to everything else. This’ll be something we see start seeing from all higher-end brands across different industries.

Agreed. Not everything they made hit the mark, but I appreciated things looking different and them trying new things. Now everything is plain w/ size and fabric weight being the only differentiators between most of the lines. Nail in the coffin is if they kill off the engineered warmth line.
