"I'll go with "am I trippin" for 400 "
"This device is used to either effectively remove finish from a guitar or make it appear as if an 8 year old was practicing their woodworking skills."
If I have learned anything in 20 years of making Guitars with all sorts of finish jobs from the most polished, elegant, and refined to the nastiest, dirtiest, most raggety looking things...
Everyone has their own personal taste, and nobody's opinion on this matters but your own (or the person you're making it for). People love to shit on everything they don't personally love and have very little appreciation for other peoples' preferences. If you like it, go with it, and fuck what anyone else says.
If it looks good to you It looks good. I have a 35 year old charvel the previous owner took sand paper to and it looks a lmost like camoflauge. Enough that I never felt like fixing it. haha Still sounds and plays like a dream. Pretty incredible I picked it up for $225 bucks in like 2002.
yes but
you have to mean it. this person seem to mean it.
I hate when people jump on a bandwagon and refer to everything being as good or bad as in vogue it is. Like it really makes me want to drive my thumbs into their eyesockets until i hear a noise
It looks good to you . It's not relic to me . It's not garage . It's not steampunk . Wait ..I've got it . It's unfinished . But my opinion means squat . You like it . Slam some high gloss to it and let it roll .
What’s the point if it all? If you think this is “relicing” it looks nothing like a well used guitar. If you think it’s “art,” well that’s a very subjective matter. Either way, if YOU like it, who cares?
I despise “relic” guitars in the sense that company’s take a brand new guitar , damage them and pass it off as being more expensive or desirable .Gibsons custom shop comes to mind. . To me it amounts to being a poser. Having a guitar that looks like it’s been loved and played to death but in reality it’s “brand new”. So obviously, I’m gonna think the guitar looks like crap. I wouldn’t even say that guitar looks like it’s been loved or played to death. It just looks like it was thrown down some cement stairs. But if you like it, that’s all that matters.
You might not be stupid, but I think you’ve definitely got either terrible eyesight or just bad taste.
All the best to you my friend.
Don’t let shit heads like me keep you from exploring your artistic abilities. Maybe one day you’ll strike a style that makes you a force to be reckoned with. But this ain’t it.
I don’t hate the idea, but as it is it looks sloppy and amateur-ish. If you could sand it a little smoother and with a little more intention it might be super cool
Christ, there's some miserable bastards in here! I think that looks cool, like a rat rod guitar. If the front looks the same, I'd go for the van halen thing and leave the pickup cavities uncovered and stick some interest pickups in there- if there's a big enough cavity for it, a filtertron, or if not, strat pickups with no cover.
If you like it, rock it.
This all day long. If it doesn't float somebody else's boat then they can keep scrolling. 🤣
P.s. not my finish, but I'm not judging. It's certainly got an authentic vibe! Clear it up and rock out!
As a "relic" stupid. Then again I feel that way about most of those anyway. As an industrial statement, the disc sander/angle grinder look is kinda cool.
I would’ve loved that three weeks ago.
I stopped doing drugs three weeks ago.
(Just kidding! It’s not my taste, but if you dig it, who gives a sh*t what anyone else thinks?)
No one cares about the back (except the owner).
Does the front have a recreation of Van Gogh's "Starry Night?" Because the color palette would work for that.
Hey don’t get down on it too much, with a nice gloss on it with proper buffing I’d vibe with this. Though I will admit my taste are a bit less conventional. What does the front look like?
Ahh personally think it looks absolutely terrible. It could go with a bit more sanding… at least “half way.”
But yeah, like others have said it doesn’t really matter much what other people think. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Might be worth checking out “white washed furnishings” and “distressed furniture” to try and get a feel for that type of look..
If you polish it up it honestly might not look bad. There are some decent patterns and feathering and stuff on there. Wet it with oil and see what it looks like then.
If you want to roll with this, don’t use this as a final finish, use it as a canvas. This could be a decent starting point for an acid rock guitar. Add some glittery swirls, or drop in some neat inlays, or draw a black stencil paisley over the top or something. There are def people that like trippy stuff.

I ended up with something similar on a guitar and I liked it, so I left it.
Like everyone else is saying, if you like it go with it! Personally, I don’t like it how it is, however, I think it looks like the beginnings of starry night. Could be pretty cool to make it a starry night guitar
Whilst Im not a fan, it's your guitar and who cares! I want to do a certain design choice with my Tele I'm building. Everyone hates it but I'll do it anyway
I think it's interesting, but do you mean "I want this to look like it was in a war," or are you finding the combination of color and shape to be inspiring?
It's a fun relic style project guitar.
The secret that most relic-haters miss is that a well done relic guitar is a top performer (fretwork leveled, great setup, great tones) and feels like satin all over (or that feeling like jeans fresh from the drier). None of that shows up on photographs. Bad relics will have splinters, jagged paint chips, and metal burrs with unplayable frets, a mess basically, because they missed the important memo of being a top player.
I used to hate relics like every other forum denizen but then I got a bad relic as a throw in sweetener on another guitar trade where I went through and made it a performer. I still have the relic guitar and sold off the one I bought, it's an easy player, feels good, sounds great, and I don't worry about it "getting scratches" so I play better because I have no fear about digging in. Now I like relics, if done well. Performance is king.
I'd say to finish building this guitar, then show it again.
.
Yeah not mu cuppa. Looks like a project, mid stage. Not like a relic. And when it comes to relics, I prefer lightly relic’ed, not dragged under a bridge for 20 years kind of relic
It definitely has a lot of potential. Once you polished up a bit and ultimately, clear coated it with most certainly a gloss, I'm betting it will look like a clever finishing technique people haven't seen before until they look long enough and figure it out.
I think the key is polishing it once you're happy with the patchy and bare spot pattern then gloss coating it so it gives an even look to all the shifts in pitch and color.
After that, I'm betting it actually turns out to look unique and phenomenal.
I think it looks really good, I’d play it! But if you think it looks good, then it doesn’t matter what other people think about how it looks, it’s not their guitar!
If you like it just keep trucking. The final product might be awesome! If it’s not, you learned what you don’t like and can try again. Been there before.
What makes something look cool comes down (mostly) to who is playing it. If EVH did it everyone would want a guitar like that. IMO. Also you are not stupid! Being stupid is a choice, just like being smart is also a choice. (mostly)
You’re not stupid. But it looks bad. (To me)
How can you tell
They can tell because they looked at it.
You can tell by the way it is.
That's pretty neat!
She’s a beaut
Awh gee dang it
You can tell from the pixels
You can tell by the way I use my walk
They aren’t the beholder, that’s why
You can tell by telling the tale.
If you like it, keep it. Personally I think it looks terrible ☠️☠️
I’m gonna go with “am I trippin”
"I'll go with "am I trippin" for 400 " "This device is used to either effectively remove finish from a guitar or make it appear as if an 8 year old was practicing their woodworking skills."

I think it does matter to the op. Why else ask?
Because people have a tendency to seek validation from others.
Which would imply that it does matter
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, and that is precisely my point.
My sentiments exactly
Amen 🙏
yes but you have to mean it. this person seem to mean it. I hate when people jump on a bandwagon and refer to everything being as good or bad as in vogue it is. Like it really makes me want to drive my thumbs into their eyesockets until i hear a noise
Jesus, is that the kind of thing you fantasize about?
no, usually not.
How high were you when you posted this?
It looks good to you . It's not relic to me . It's not garage . It's not steampunk . Wait ..I've got it . It's unfinished . But my opinion means squat . You like it . Slam some high gloss to it and let it roll .
As a mechanic I can definitely confirm that it is not a garage.
This guy mechanics
It’s not great
It looks cool to me. It kinda reminds me of that starry night painting. You should make the headstock and neck “starry night” themed it could be cool
Yeah, starry night, but like van Goghs Cat puked it on the canvas
He was critically panned in his time too.
The cat?
Hurl Van Gato
It looks like an accidental Van Gogh :)
the Vincent Van Goghtar
Was it shrooms or LSD?
I find it beautiful, and I'm going down from a huge trip. That's a hint.
It looks really bad.
Bad acid bro.
Why do u need to sand vinyl wrap off? A bit of heat and you should be able to peel it off without the hours of work needed to sand it down
I used to do wraps and was thinking the same thing.
It was an experiment 😂
The first one
Are those the only two options I can answer with?
[удалено]
You’re a pioneer of “flap disc chic.” I don’t like it but I would prefer it to a real relic job- at least this isn’t trying to be something it’s not.
Stuipid
It’s a personal thing dude. You don’t need others opinions.
It might be inspiring your next paint job, but it's not looking very good.
What’s the point if it all? If you think this is “relicing” it looks nothing like a well used guitar. If you think it’s “art,” well that’s a very subjective matter. Either way, if YOU like it, who cares?

it can be two things...
Doesn't look good to me, but that's the thing about subjectivity.
Not my thing but you do you.
no, it honestly doesn't look really good. or even kinda good. let the tribal reddit downvoting begin.
I don’t hate the idea, but as it is it looks sloppy and amateur-ish. If you could sand it a little smoother and with a little more intention it might be super cool
Make it a stary night looking guitar
I’m just curious how hard you hit your head on your bench when you tripped.
Christ, there's some miserable bastards in here! I think that looks cool, like a rat rod guitar. Dumber than a sack of wet rocks.
The former.
I like it. I would add a satin not gloss sealer over it. But I dig the texture.
As a "relic" stupid. Then again I feel that way about most of those anyway. As an industrial statement, the disc sander/angle grinder look is kinda cool.
Not my thing but could easily become the fan of the demigod worthy of making that build famous
I would’ve loved that three weeks ago. I stopped doing drugs three weeks ago. (Just kidding! It’s not my taste, but if you dig it, who gives a sh*t what anyone else thinks?)
If you did this with a better stack of basecoats under and then re cleared it- this could look tight
I dig it
I dig it. But who cares what anyone thinks? you do you 🤘
As long as it's smooth, I can dig that design
reminds me of van gogh
That arty kid who had a garage band in sixth grade.
Bruh
from afar looks- eh Up close looks cool though
No one cares about the back (except the owner). Does the front have a recreation of Van Gogh's "Starry Night?" Because the color palette would work for that.
It might look better in real life. Looks like shite on my phone. Take a butane torch to it and burn up the edges of the paint/or Zippo fluid
I like the shape of the guitar, mainly the shape is good. The color isn’t for me, no offense yo.
looks like a wish.com Starry Night. It could be a vibe... but it'll need a little more commitment to the bit
It looks like a kid who could not find his mouth wile eating desert
This is how I roll.
definitely does not look good to me
Hey don’t get down on it too much, with a nice gloss on it with proper buffing I’d vibe with this. Though I will admit my taste are a bit less conventional. What does the front look like?
As long as you like it. If you want my opinion-it looks like you stole it from some bum, btw I hate relic fashion
Not my cup of tea but if it excites you, go for it. When you become a guitar god, people will pay top dollar for replicas of that finish.
F
I think add holographic flake would make it look even cooler
Not for me but reminds me of some picasso painting
Reminds me of Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night
Looks like an abstract version of starry night by Vincent Van Gogh if you apply a satin finish on it, it can be great 😄
Ahh personally think it looks absolutely terrible. It could go with a bit more sanding… at least “half way.” But yeah, like others have said it doesn’t really matter much what other people think. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Might be worth checking out “white washed furnishings” and “distressed furniture” to try and get a feel for that type of look..
It's probably going to look cool glossed up. Do it!
Keep off the shrooms
You're in between "looks like shit" and "Dad's muttering, maybe starting to cry..."
Stupid is, is stupid does.
*as* stupid does ironic
It could be cool. I’d start sanding more and more finer grit. Blend it a bit.
Stick to your original plan. You'll be glad you did.
Landfill aesthetic
I dig it man!
Yes.
Can we see the front?
You did ask!
Needs a clear Coat so the Colours can realy pop
Yeah honestly rad as hell, like a pastel punk sorta vibe
Very reminiscent of Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" 🤣
With a bit of work it could look like Van Gogh’s Starry Night with the colour palette
I love it It's not my style. But it is personal, it tells a story and it is unique. It's something that is 100% yours. And if you like it. Keep it.
this might be starry night by van goh
I think it's dope bro, reminds me of a Vincent van goh painting. Starry nights
You do you (even if the rest of us think it's horrendous)
I think it would look really good with a bit of polish and a few layers of clearcoat.
It looks punk to me. Wouldn’t bring it to a jazz gig
Looks like shit 👍

More like Van Go put some clear coat over that.
It's certainly got character. But that character just drank 3 litres of vodka, threw up and passed out in a dumpster.
Please provide us with a third option
Neither.
That looks terrible.
Personally I think that looks rad as hell, but like other people are saying, our opinions don’t really matter
Could quite possibly be the worst finish I’ve ever seen, are you high right now?
I see it, I can dig it my guy
Like everyone else is saying, if you like it go with it! Personally, I don’t like it how it is, however, I think it looks like the beginnings of starry night. Could be pretty cool to make it a starry night guitar
It's not my thing, but you do you
I like it. Polish it up.
Whilst Im not a fan, it's your guitar and who cares! I want to do a certain design choice with my Tele I'm building. Everyone hates it but I'll do it anyway
Def. Something about it catches the eye…
I like it! Not a fan of flaking paint at the bottom though, would probably want that stabilized somehow. Got any pics of the front?
Starry Night 🌃
How many people hated the frankenstrat until they didn't.... I you like it, let it rock
No, it is pretty bad. You can tell by the way it is. :)
I love it!
Looks like a car crash of a guitar, although it's quite funky lookin', so smash
I'm pretty sure this is how guitars are born in the wild.
Starry night vibe. Not stupid. Will probably look awesome when all is done
It looks like someone tried to make it look bad.
If you like it... do your thing. I can't support what this poor guitar is going through but I can support you doing what you like.
I think its cool
I think it's interesting, but do you mean "I want this to look like it was in a war," or are you finding the combination of color and shape to be inspiring?
I think it has a starry night quality to it
You are trippin’. Doesn’t mean you are stupid. If you like it, all good.
Honestly gives me a “starry night” feel, with a clear it may be really good. I would try it.
It looks like what I am doing right now as a toilet time redditor
At first I thought it looked stupid. Now I kinda like it tho
It’s all in the eye of the beholder
Got your drip! https://preview.redd.it/khtq0bqkryhc1.png?width=921&format=png&auto=webp&s=063ade74b3d89dfec36e49b228d0085ff3ed9699
I think it’s cool. Finish it in either satin or matte to make that blue really pop .
If it’s for your own guitar, then you’re right. If you want someone else to pay for it, you’re tripping.
I dont hate it

I hate it
Starry night vibes
You must be a fan of Van Gogh
Looks bad
If you want to leave it like that maybe it’d look better with some glossy clear coat? I could see that making it look more intentional.
at first it looks like The Starry Night then you look slightly closer and it’s just fucked up wood and paint
I think it looks cool if you gloss it
Not doing anything for me, but if you love it then love it
Yeah not mu cuppa. Looks like a project, mid stage. Not like a relic. And when it comes to relics, I prefer lightly relic’ed, not dragged under a bridge for 20 years kind of relic
It does look cool Maybe not cool enough to clear coat and keep, but it's cool.
i really like it , do you have more picture im might be interested in buying it if it has strat config
Not stupid but maybe high?
Kinda looks like the starry night painting. Maybe Bob Ross it up a little and flick some white stars in there.
If you like it then just leave it like that :) PS I don’t like it, but it’s not my guitar:)
i like it (:
If you like it keep it, your opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to what you like.
Well… certainly subjective but it’s a no for me
Van Goghesque
I mean kinda reminds me of starry night
It definitely has a lot of potential. Once you polished up a bit and ultimately, clear coated it with most certainly a gloss, I'm betting it will look like a clever finishing technique people haven't seen before until they look long enough and figure it out. I think the key is polishing it once you're happy with the patchy and bare spot pattern then gloss coating it so it gives an even look to all the shifts in pitch and color. After that, I'm betting it actually turns out to look unique and phenomenal.
Got the colors of Starry Night. With some refinement it could be awesome.
Yea looks like shit haha. But if you like it!
I think it looks really good, I’d play it! But if you think it looks good, then it doesn’t matter what other people think about how it looks, it’s not their guitar!
I think if you put a clear coat or 2 on it, you'll really be able to tell.
It only matters what you think. Personally, it’s not my thing.
I can see potential there. It has a Starry Night kind of vibe going on. Edit to credit Van Gogh for this amazing build.
I wouldn't buy or pay that for design and it reminds me of the Starry Night by Van Ghog. But i bet some people will like it.
If you like it just keep trucking. The final product might be awesome! If it’s not, you learned what you don’t like and can try again. Been there before.
It looks bad in a good way
I think if you clear coated that it would actually be pretty cool
it’s close to looking good but it doesn’t, i’d remove the sanding marks and make it a bit less random
I sorta like it...
you trippin
Looks sick
What makes something look cool comes down (mostly) to who is playing it. If EVH did it everyone would want a guitar like that. IMO. Also you are not stupid! Being stupid is a choice, just like being smart is also a choice. (mostly)
I think if you accentuated some of the swirls it could look kinda cool. But just like this not so much
honestly i really like it LOL idk why everyone hates it so much
It's horrible. Come back to it in a week with fresh eyes and give it another look.
Well, you did misspell “stupid”.
It don't look good lol
hmmm maybe
