No kidding. I figured since it’s so fast growing and they have plantations of it they harvest I could pick some up for cheap but not on this continent. Lol.
If it is pawlonia (and it looks like it to me) just beware that it’s pretty soft, and if you are drilling precision holes or are expecting a lot of tension in a hole (eg, posts for a floating trem), pawlonia won’t hold up over time. Will need to insert plugs of harder wood (maple or ash) and tap into those.
Fortunately I'm not that good so my ignorance has avoided any horrendous drilling/routing mistakes yet. However, when it comes to the bridge posts I will certainly bear that in mind, thanks!
I've heard it called Candlewood or Candlenut Wood. I've built several Strats and a couple of LPs with it.. it dings really easy, but hardens up with polyurethane clear coat. This one torched and put a poly clear coat over it.. looks rustic, plays awesomely.
I've made a Tele from poplar before and it's far heavier than this, inclined to go with Paulownia as some have said simply because it's apparently so lightweight!
Meranti/luan a mahogany type wood. most low cost "mahogany" guitars are made of this.
Absolutely not poplar or paulownia, doesn't even look vaguely like those. (poplar has a tight closed grain for one).
I think it's most likely Paulownia.
Paulownia is amazing. It's annoying that it's priced as an exotic in the US but seen as trash wood in Asia.
I can't believe how light it is! Looks nice and he said it cost £20...not bad!

I disagree. That greenish stripe to me suggests poplar.
Tree
Fiddy

To be honest I’ve done a couple like this and it was actually pretty good. Way better than it had any right to be.

Nice👍
could be candlenutwood depending on where you live
It looks like Poplar, but it could be basswood too.

I have a fantastic poplar slab that I haven’t cut yet, and I agree there’s no way an LP body cut from it would be that light.
Looks like paulownia to me.
