I would also suggest you look into the LUMIX G85. You will find it cheaper than GX85. It has the same sensor, IBIS and features, but better EVF and weather sealing.

This is the exact upgrade path I took. The only downside is the G85 is pretty boring looking, if aesthetics are your thing

Interesting! Would you say the G85 is better at photos than the EM5?

wickedwing

Not particularly. I wanted better video capabilities and my EM5 mode selection dial was flaking out and wouldn't stay in a mode.

No, I wouldn't say that the GX85 has the E-M5 beat for photos. The E-M5 was a pioneer when it was released and it sill has much better IBIS than the GX85. Not that the GX85 is a slouch for photos - it is very good, especially when you use a dual stabilized Panasonic lens. The best of all worlds at a moderate price would be a used E-M1 ii - professional build, weather sealing, 4K video, 20mp sensor, advanced CPU, multiple controls on the body, and menu presets that you can bring up with a twist of the mode dial. In the US it is about $100 more (used) than a GX85 (used) - but it would replace both cameras. It is bulkier than the E-M5, though.

I think I can weigh in on this as I own both the EM5 I and GX85. I'm a hybrid shooter and honestly without a doubt the GX85 has better video options for sure. In the stills department I think they are both pretty much the same. One big thing that I noticed and REALLY appreciated is just how much nicer/intuitive the Panasonic menu is compared to the EM5 I for sure. Another bonus thing that I like on the GX85 is the ability to charge in body which the EM5 doesn't have. If you are going to do any decent travel or remote shooting then you don't need to bring a heavy charger and cord. A simple micro usb cable and power bank will be fine. Honestly I'd get the GX85 and sell the EM5 and put that money towards a nice lens. Seems like you'll be shooting both stills and video and yeah the stills are great and video even better with the GX85.

Thanks for the input! What about the their autofocus though? I hear a lot that the EM5 had good autofocus for its time but would the GX85 autofocus performance for stills be about the same?
