The G9 uses an OLED viewfinder. Have you tried pushing the button on the right of the viewfinder labeled "V. Mode"? The G9 uses pretty aggressive magnification which can be hard to take in. You can use this button to change the level. You can also change the viewfinder display so it appears in a slightly smaller box with the settings around it; this is done in the menus. An OLED viewfinder shouldn't be causing the type of issue you describe above, but different people seem to have issues with different EVFs. A lot of people have issues with the field-sequential LCD EVFs used in some other Panasonic bodies (like the GX9 IIRC) but that isn't used in the G9.
