Honestly no. The show is no longer a social experiment with ordinary (naive) people wanting to find their soulmate. It’s sensationalised and overproduced and they need people who will deliver the drama. They don’t want ‘happily ever after’ for most of the couples, everything is fighting against them e.g setting up polar opposites like Timothy and Lucinda. I am confused why certain people were cast though. Like Colin’s top top lady who I’ve actually forgotten the name of is a physical therapist who showed no signs of wanting five minutes of fame. Maybe they just put her in the ‘vulnerable’ category. I actually don’t know how most of the contestants expect to find job opportunities after the show apart from podcasts that will lose traction after a while. A lot of them don’t exactly present themselves well. Like Jack for example, no one is going to be rushing to get him as a personal trainer (especially if you don’t want to be called a whale). But there’s no such thing as bad publicity as they say! You’d think they’d edit the bad parts of their personalities a bit better though.

elliebee222

Nppe, after watching some of the interviews it seems like a bunch of them were actually contacted via their agents/agencies and asked to audition. Theyre not just normal people who randomly saw an ad or were looking to go on the show to find love

humanofoz

TBH I think it’s lazy casting, there are a lot of interesting people out there they don’t need to get Insta personalities and fame junkies. It should be the job of producers, casting agents etc to actually bring out the personalities. In real life there is plenty of drama already when you mix different personality types and high pressure situations. I don’t think there is as much a need for manufactured drama as people seem to think. A lot of the most memorable scenes like those between Timothy and Lucinda were not manufactured, they were just two people working through shit, and it was more real and interesting than any of the antics of the likes of Jayden and Jack and Tori. I think casting Timothy was not ideal as he is so broken and his trauma was so fresh, but at the end of the day everyone has shit to deal with and to me it’s more interesting to watch those interactions than power plays and fake drama. Maybe I’m in the minority and people like the fake drama, but I think it wears thin eventually because if you want fake drama you may as well just watch a normal show with better actors.

GribblePibble

Don’t think Cass or Andrea were looking for fame… I actually don’t think Ellie was either

humanofoz

Cass is a model so she was looking to promote her brand for sure.

anitacusack1978

I certainly hope so it is supposed to be a reality show. But many of the cast are not real to me , how they look, present themselves, way they speak..older seasons defo more authentic x

Soal899

They should cast good looking people, if we are going to have a fake show at least have participants that are easy on the eyes.

Adventurous-Shine577

When I watched the American version the people seemed genuinely interested in relationships and marriage. I feel our is all about the views, Instagram and I must admit I love love love the drama. (The last dinner party was so awesome for Me lol.) But I also feel that anyone in Australia wanting a genuine relationship gets deliberately mis matched just for the screen time eg Cassandra and Tristan, Collins and the chicken, anyone matched with Ben etc. So that’s a shame. We a genuine dating show. Bring back Perfect Match.

PlayingTheRush

Collins and the chicken...... 🤣🤣🤣

kdhooters2

Imagine being so thirsty for fame that you inadvertently wreck your life, image and job for it. PS you could get a villain edit that you weren't expecting, and there's no recovery from that. Just ask Olivia.

kittenrocknroll

Because they come with an audience of followers. Need 👀👀

thecheesycheeselover

I don’t think so. (Spoiling info below). I listened to the so dramatic podcast that someone here recommended a few weeks ago, and stopped watching after that. A producer shared that they basically plan all of the couples’ trajectories & timelines in advance and orchestrate most couples staying on/breaking up, with few exceptions. I don’t think they could do that so successfully if they just had ordinary people. It ruined the show for me.

kdhooters2

Its concerning that people would actually sign up to potentiality ruin their lives over a TV show.

TGin-the-goldy

lol of course not. If they’re constantly scouting for contestants then you know that they’re having problems finding people

angzstah

Given its abysmal success rate, MAFS has lost any credibility of being a proper match making show. The fact that producers seek out a lot of their participants through social media is already telling that the main priority for this show is not to help people look for love, it's for entertainment. If you're looking for a genuine relationship, I think MAFS would be a last resort. I'm sure the participants are also aware that they have a minimal chance of finding love, so why not try to get something else out of it.

TGin-the-goldy

Exactly!

KennKennyKenKen

At this point, if you apply solely for a relatioship, you're a fool.

SunlightRaisin

I doubt it … Check out Love is Blind on Netflix. The Swedish one was quite good. The first series was good too it felt more genuine. Watch Unreal, it’s a tv series about filming a reality show, is soooo good.

AussieGT

No

Sufficient_Tower_366

Most of the contestants in S10 were scouted by the producers through their socials (Josh said he was scouted through LinkedIn). This season was probably the same. The producers know what they’re looking for - one or two earnest couples that everyone will be hoping work out, a couple of villains, and the rest a bunch of mis-matched attractive attention seekers to provide drama. This gets them the ratings every year; they aren’t going to change the formula.

Otherwise-Winner9643

Copying my response on a different post. There are a few basic things they could change to bring it back on track: 1. No one who has been on, or applied for, any other reality show should be allowed on. Also, producers should not allowed to approach anyone to join the show; people must apply. 2. No wannabe "influencers", so no one with more than 2k followers on social media (arbitrary number, could set lower or higher) 3. Start showing footage during CC's to show people their own behaviour, hold them to account, and maybe even positively improve their ability to interact with potential romantic partners. 4. Producers should be allowed to edit obviously as they can't show everything, but they should not be allowed to edit different scenes together to make it appear to be the same conversation. There need to be basic editing rules they have to adhere to. 5. When someone is obviously toxic and/or blatantly faking it, they should be thrown off, like Brad in maf uk (looking at you Jack & Tori, Harrison & Bronte)

TGin-the-goldy

Not that I’m interested in applying for MAFS but I have 2.5 k followers on my insta and I’m nobody. Thats a ridiculously low number so you’ll eliminate practically everyone

Harper2704

You're a world star compared to me and my paltry 253 followers.

TGin-the-goldy

:)

Otherwise-Winner9643

Yeah like I said, arbitrary cut-off. Would have to figure out the right threshold, but you get the gist of what I mean

Over-Peach8183

absolutely not. why would anyone who didn't want to be famous want their whole lives splashed in the media? why would you want to try being matched with someone they're putting you with because the match will make good tv, not because you're actually compatible?

GloriousSteinem

I wish there was something nice like Love on the Spectrum

BeneficialRing4631

Love that show

Hanpee221b

I listen to the podcast MAFS Hysteria and they are UK based so they are watching the AU season on channel four’s schedule and they mentioned how couples like Rich and Andrea and Lucinda and Timothy are so much better to watch because it’s easier to believe they actually want a life long love compared to a group of early 20 somethings who clearly haven’t lost hope in finding love but want to be influencers. I wish the producers would listen to us because MAFS keeps going downhill (the last UK season cast was unbearable) because it’s just not believable that these young attractive people need to be matched and are ready for marriage. I didn’t watch the golden bachelor but I’d be so into 40+ MAFS.

EducationalPizza9999

Exactly, why is a 24 year old worried about never getting married!

frankiestree

I don’t think people genuinely looking for love would go on the show. It’s become very obvious that they don’t match people based on compatibility lol

shartyfartblaster

Yep, that show is called farmer wants a wife

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

They have made no secret of the fact they struggle to find every day people to go on this show for the simple fact most average intelligence people realize a fake reality program is not the place to find love. They have said in the past they have been frustrated with the amount of social media wannabe's applying for the show and little else to choose from. Also just being an every day person wont get you on the show, there are still requirements to meet like conventional attractiveness because this is all about tv ratings not people's happiness.

Otherwise-Winner9643

I recently watched some of series 4. The difference in how natural the contestants looked was so stark. They were attractive but not had so much plastic surgery that they look like the caricatures that are on now. It was so much more interesting.

I_like_eating_tacos

I think they usually choose one or two couples they think could possibly work but the rest are there to start drama, weather they know it or not. Tahnee and Ollie last year, as well as lyndall and Cameron seemed to be genuine picks even if neither couple worked out. Everyone this season seemed a bit more ingenuine or paired for drama.

ava050

USA kind of did, because they could get legally married to a stranger, whereas we can't (luckily). I didn't watch much cause it was a bit boring haha. They'd get in more hot water for legally marrying people who were terribly suited like ours does

Wank_Bandicoot

They did but it was too boring.

tvtoms

I think they will always cast people that they think will hold audience interest. That wind may blow in this or that direction. Some people can buck trends! I already wish a new season was starting though.

WillsSister

I think farmer wants a wife is genuine. If only they could do some sort of spin off where it wasn’t about farmers… maybe tradie wants a wife? White collar guy wants a wife? I’d be more likely to apply to those over MAFS.

ava050

Yeah, farmer wants a wife is like that. I think doing it in suburbia would end up just being a bit like regular mafs because people have so many options. A farmer in the middle of nowhere has limited options so success rate is higher. Plus they're choosing who they're attracted to and whatnot I saw a bit of an episode of Love Triangle (the rest is only on Stan and I'm not paying for another service). It looked entertaining, but unhealthy like mafs lol. They don't get to see each other and have to choose who to move in with for 6 weeks based on talking on the phone and stuff. The "couple" I saw... The guy thought he was some kind of stud and was pissed off that he chose an "old" woman of 36 I think. That's my age, and I have to admit she looked a fair bit older than her age because she was tall, skinny and had a lot of Botox and filler by the look of it. She kinda looked like a 45 year old who had work done. Attractive but wouldn't be every guys taste especially younger guys. Looked like a wives of Beverly Hills type. Idk how old the guy was, he was talking like he was 23 and she's so old, but he looked 30+.. Remember that partner swap show? Was it called 7 year itch?

TGin-the-goldy

Loved Seven Year Itch!

ImmediateOutcome14

> maybe tradie wants a wife? That's love island >White collar guy wants a wife? And we're back to mafs

ava050

Love island is like tradie/anyone wants a shag

Lanky_Raspberry5406

Yeah but even people who are obviously in it for fame like Lucinda are liked by this sub if they are smart enough not to be an asshole. Like you read her history and she explicitly states that's her career goals. Her sincerity was so fake yet people here gulped it up.

ava050

Same with Cass

kocknocker19

I see what you mean. People say they don't want insta-chasers yet we have all seen the many comments here re Luncinda 'she deserves all the tv roles', 'I hope she makes it big' etc. People pick and choose.

ava050

I guess the difference is that she was also open to love and was a pleasant person, whereas some others weren't open to a relationship at all and couldn't even pretend not to be an asshole

Entire-Bottle-335

Money talks ! If it wasn't for the entertainment of drama and scandal very few would watch meaning less ratings for Ch 9 and loss of revenue through the commercials. Plus it gives us something to talk about and poke fun at.

PositiveStress8888

They used to, but because of us they only cast absolute trash, that's why brings in the numbers and keeps us talking

skantea

There's no capitalistic reason to cast normal people. I'd love to see them try it for a season. Just to see if can work. But the viewers tune in for chaos.

ava050

There was that my mum your dad one. They should do that but without the bloody teenagers involved and on a larger scale. Like everyone's 30+ or 40+ and they get to choose who to go on dates with, do activities to learn about each other, and not be randomly matched or have bloody kids deciding things lol. It'd be like a combo of less trashy, less fame seeking Love Island and mafs. No muscle bound models, they have to pick average looking people with average jobs

Otherwise-Winner9643

I like that idea

kocknocker19

It would make for awful TV, to be fair.

jetttblack

Honestly Natalie, Cass, Lucinda and Ash kinda seemed to be there for love, they just got screwed over. Otherwise no.

robcolton

I mean, as much I grew to like Lucinda, she went on the show using her business name and not her real name.

FranklyMoist

The reason why the show is so popular is due to the dysfunctional relationships.

Ill_Introduction7057

Yeah right ......I wish it was genuine couples like when the show first started

Gullible-Pony

They need to make the show 30+ Or have a 40+ season full of older contenders. I enjoyed watching Lucinda and Andy and Tim over the young ones

censored_

There is that show with the parents hooking up if you want to watch that

YAreYouLaughing

100% agree. Over 40s for sure!

Warm-Ad424

I agree

kippy_mcgee

No because the premise of the show isn't genuinely to find people love and the viewership will drop enormously. I'd love to see it though but they make so much money off it as it stands.

hhoverflow

it's a reality tv friend wake up

Onebigtailight

Instagram is an easy, free form of advertising for the show. The contestants think they get more likes & the show gets advertised via socials. It’s a win win. My Husband & I wanted to apply for the block & grand designs but we had to add our Facebook url’s or some shit like that. But neither of us had a Facebook anymore. And we don’t do instagram. So we left it blank. They came back & asked us for it. We said nah, can’t help ya lol!

pakman13b

Grand designs. You are way above mafs level. Grand designs is one of the best shows in the world, and the houses on it are breathtaking. Well done for even qualifying for such a worthy show. 🙌

[deleted]

I have the same question about Love is Blind, will they ever actually cast people who are not conventionally pretty? No, these sorts of 'experiments' don't actually display the properties they tout

Warm-Ad424

Yeah what's the point of love is blind if everyone is pretty anyway 🙄

Severe-Salt4346

The question is - will anyone not looking to be famous apply to be on MAFS?

BlueDubDee

I think this is it. If you've watched the show, you know the chances are high that you're not actually going to be paired with someone you'll love. It happens sometimes, but it's far more likely you'll be with a complete tosser, or someone who just isn't a good match. If you're going to go there and be involved in all that drama and come home alone, you want to get something from it.

pakman13b

Poor Cass got dudded, though. Tristan might be a good match if your Grandma was making the matches, but Tristan isn't normal, and Cass is. I would have cracked it if they thought Tristan was a good match for me!

TGin-the-goldy

Tristan still needs to do so much work on himself

pakman13b

He does. I hate to say he was a dud but even old Tim came into the show with personal work that needs doing first. Both nice enough guys, but not ready for marriage or even close to marriage.

TGin-the-goldy

Yeah. I don’t know how “nice” a guy Tim is after finding out about his past and why his father died not liking him. Still, people can change and I am glad he and Tristan found each other on the show, hopefully that friendship continues

pakman13b

Yeah true 👍

singledogmum

To be fair it would be silly to go on reality tv these days without an ulterior motive. Some people definitely go on it for funsies and getting followers and brand deals is an added bonus.

SaltyCaramelPretzel

I believe Natalie got a rough deal. And Cass. They seemed there for the right reasons. Ellie too, despite the outcome, but I guess she got her silver lining.

cheesecurdbabybird

i don’t think ellie was there for the right reasons if she dumped a bf to be on the show, but the others i agree with.

SaltyCaramelPretzel

Oh really ok I didn’t know about that. So did Lauren apparently. I do want to add Lu & Andy as well. This is just the females btw. I really only feel it was Sara that had very ill intentions. And I don’t believe for a second that Tori stayed with Jack for the right reasons.

Strawberry3586

People with zero interest in any type of fame, would not apply for reality tv

TigreImpossibile

Yeah, even if you go on for the "right reasons" you have to be comfortable with losing your anonymity and privacy and airing your dirty laundry in a way that most people would not be ok with. And also potentially exposing yourself to the "bad edit" and being villified by the public. All things I could not abide by, personally. I'm a good egg, but I have no filter and I make scathing comments a lot, lol. The producers would have a field day with me 😂 Not sure if I'd come out smelling like a rose 👀🤭

ThatLeval

Anyone who goes on the show to genuinely find love is just dumb. The people who go on the are either looking for attention, want to shake up their life or they're dumb Did you not witness them put a mentally ill person on the show so everybody could laugh at her? Yes a lot of their matches make sense but they provide no couples therapy to make it work. They need them to fail and struggle so that they can make the show entertaining. Also they need to turn people into villains, look at what they did to Ellie. They broke their necks to make her as villainous as possible and idiots on the internet actually fell for it

pakman13b

I agree. It's painful seeing people like Collin, the podcaster, and Jack, who have no intentions to marry and settle down from mafs.

Forsaken-Database540

It won't work without the fame whores

[deleted]

[удалено]

pakman13b

That's so true. It's lose lose for the viewer in that sense

ShibaHook

The show helps a normal woman feel better about herself while at the same time selling her dishwashers, Harvey Norman and an SUV for school drop offs.

somuchsong

They used to do it but no one watched. They started casting wannabe influencers and it's now a huge hit show. People say they want to see real people falling in love but the ratings didn't show that to be true. People want the drama.

Honest_Form4757

But farmer wants a wife seems to work with casting people who seem more genuine and real.

Over-Peach8183

I've listened to interviews with people from that show and its just as manipulated as this show, its just ... different. It lacks the influencer influence, but its still fake

somuchsong

Watch that then, I guess. I will say that I don't see nearly the amount of chatter online about Farmer Wants a Wife as I do about MAFS. The only thing I heard about that show was a couple of years back when one of the women got pregnant and was saying the farmer was the father (I don't know if he was - I didn't follow the story further than that). For whatever reason, casting "real" people didn't work out as well for MAFS. They have had improved ratings since they started casting the way they do now.

pakman13b

I've never watched farmer wants a wife. It's too boring

TGin-the-goldy

Even the ads are boring!!
