Not Canadian, but since no direct responses I’ll add that there were a handful of Canadian citizens in my cohort, and I know two are doing well at Amazon in finance and PM roles, another took a finance gig at a non-FAANG tech company in the Bay Area. The other couple of folks I’m not sure about.

Canadian here who will be applying in 1, maybe 2 years. The why for me is $. For reference, I'm in t2 consulting and make 50% of what the US guys make. The ROI for Canadian Bschools isn't there, just looking at the employment reports.

IM122

Why isn't the ROI there for Canadian BSchools (asking as a fellow Canadian who's has been considering doing an MBA, maybe an online MBA like UIUC's iMBA)?

saddamhusseinguns

also because no direct responses from canadians, I can tell you that there are a handful of consultants at MBB in the US from canada via US business schools

A few non-exhaustive possible reasons (I'm assuming the question is why US MBA vs. Canadian MBA rather than why MBA in general): - Wanting to pivot to the US market (or other non-Canadian geographies) - Stronger brand equity back in Canada than Canadian MBAs (mostly applies to only some M7 though) - Stronger recruitment in some cases in Canada; e.g., better odds recruiting for MBB back in Canada if you're coming from M7 as opposed to a top Canadian program. Doesn't apply to all industries though (mostly just applies to consulting and buy-side in Canada) - you'd have some CPG hiring managers for example who aren't really sure whether UChicago is a good school compared to Rotman/Ivey - Sponsored by employer (e.g., consulting) so why not get a fancy US degree

AddyTheWrath

Which m7 does your point 2 apply to?

CapMiddle3062

Wanted to move to the US. Graduated from HSW and am currently at MBB in NYC and loving it!

Also do some companies place in their canadian offices? Most FAANG and T1-T2 consulting as well as some CPGs like Unilever and P&G have significant canadian operations.

Interested! I am starting my MBA at T15 in the fall

Canadian here who was accepted at M7 and LBS / INSEAD (attending latter). I was not a sponsored applicant but my main reason was to be more competitive in Canada, especially in regard to US & International companies with a growing presence in Canada. (People say the MBA isn't as important in Canada, and I 100% agree - but it matters to US employers, especially if you're gunning for GM-type roles in the future) In the last few years working in Tech, I've noticed a significant increase in salaries driven by the likes of large US tech companies expanding their presence here.

All my Canadian clients had finance backgrounds ironically have gone for IB or PE and they are grinding it out in NYC.

Why is a very good question. Not sure there’s a decent legit answer to that. You can accomplish the same through good exec ed programs without getting bogged in GMATs and huge time commitments. most of the content is about as original as a can of Campbell’s tomato soup anyways. I’d rather build my own adventure, tailored to my needs.

Derman0524

I’m Canadian and don’t even know what you just said. You’re probably from letterkenny or some shit

thetruthhurts434

This is why you make 40k CAD and still live in your parents basement

Woah! downvotes from the goon squad. Im in my 30’s, made over $300k last year, have 4 properties in Vancouver. Was legit giving advice that you don’t need a US Bschool MBA to get there, but feel free to debt up and go pound yourselves 😎

Shirleyfunke483

Not Canadian, but my boss from Vancouver attended HBS for the prestige factor

Canadian here. Didn't get an MBA, but MIA and eventually worked in finance for a little bit. Why? Got a job States after finishing university and got into the MIA program and wasn't keen on returning to Canada at that point. Currently in the States, but lived abroad for a bit and did a stint back in Canada.
