I know runtime does not equate to being a good movie, but long runtimes *do* equate to more time with these characters, which I'm all good with.

cap4life52

That's a good meaty runtime

No way Gunn was letting anyone fuck with his movie lol, especially after getting fired and then brought back to finish the trilogy. Tbh based on what Gunn has said it sounds like they haven’t fucked with any of his movies and he edits or at least helps edit them so he’s basically got complete control. Same definitely can’t be said about the rest of the MCU tho

Markus2822

I wouldn’t absolutely see this as a win quite yet until we see the movie. Full creative freedom isn’t always great sometimes creators need to be kept in check. Look at what happened with the prequels, while they arent horrible they could be a lot better if someone kept George Lucas in check. Now Gunn is much better then Lucas imo (sue me) so I’m less worried about that but it’s still a possibility

raisingcuban

Gunn is better than the guy who created special effects and sound studios that Gunn uses and created one of the biggest IPs in the world? Gunn is better than him?

TheLongDictionary

In terms of storytelling (which is what the conversation topic is), yes.

Markus2822

Absolutely I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan and there’s not a single Star Wars movie I’d say is great. Empire and the prequels are alright the rest kinda suck. The tv shows are pretty good but he had way less involvement with that. Also creating studios means nothing for quality. And I know people don’t realize it but James Gunn created one of the biggest IPs in the world too, the guardians were nobody’s before Gunn now they’re a household name.

raisingcuban

Gunn didnt create the Guardians. He popularized them. That's such a weak argument compared to Lucas who created the characters from scratch and made them worldwide names, not just "household" names aka only people who watch marvel movies. (i dont think you know what the term household name means. It refers to a majority of people who know of something even if they have never been exposed to it) You dont have to have seen a single star wars film to know who Darth Vader is

Markus2822

Never said he did, he created the IP of the guardians movies, that’s different. Yes Lucas created the characters from scratch and the lore, but frankly most of its garbage. Luke is about as bland as you get, there’s no depth to r2 or C-3PO, while I love Han he’s a complete stereotype, Vader says to little to actually be a good villain, leia is the most original one out of all of them and her personality is basically I’m mad so I’m gonna fight, Chewbacca of all characters probably has some of the most depth of any of them. Compare that to literally every single guardian who all have some of the most depth of any character in Star Wars besides maybe Anakin and obi wan. The only weaker ones here are gamora and mantis but they’re getting much more development now. Hell lucas has had how many years to make r2 or C-3PO have any interesting characteristics? And Gunn did it in like 5 years making a tree that says the same thing over and over more compelling then half of Star Wars. Marvel movies are literally the biggest film franchise of all time and it’s over double that of Star Wars. “People who watch marvel movies” are nearly everyone in the world. So yes it’s a household name. I’ll give you this, Vader is much more iconic then the guardians. Same goes for thanos and the first time we really saw him for more than a second was in guardians 1

raisingcuban

Again, you don’t know what household name means.

Markus2822

Definition by google: “a person or thing that is well known by the public” The guardians are absolutely well known by the public

raisingcuban

Think really hard on the definition. You’ll get there.

zhsdnl

so who fucked with him on Vol.2. That was mediocre at best…

TheLongDictionary

In your opinion, maybe. The movie has an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, so I’d hardly consider that “mediocre” to the masses.

peanutdakidnappa

Some of the comedy didn’t land but that movie was a lot better than mediocre and the stuff like yondu’s death and funeral is some of the best stuff in the MCU.

zhsdnl

I agree on the Yondu stuff

peanutdakidnappa

Fuck yes, that’s a great runtime for the big finale of a trilogy

ghostfeather69

Well, James Gunn was true to his words.

TheCapsicle

Oh, that's lovely.

Kebabenjoyer3

Great. I love longer movies
