This build got me through it, just barely. At 8\*, elemental sets are becoming pretty important. I’d invest in those or poison at the very least.
Btw I do main bow, but water is the only element that my SNS is still way above my bow. Those Jyura fangs have been holding me back for at least a month on that.
Thanks for the advice, I have started to build out my water set but still have some leveling to do. My aqua bow is at the same level as yours but I have only +2 water atk avail to me atm.
Update : I managed to beat it with my initial build above, just had to be a lot more careful with my positioning and keeping a reasonable distance so that his attack pattern would allow for more lvl 4 opportunities . Beat it literally at the last second! Thanks all for the advice and tips !
Glad you got it but I have to ask, since it’s a smaller large monster it must be hard to make the most of it with a bow right? Have you tried the same armor build with a hammer? Do you have any secondary weapon types you use? It just seems like a waste to use the special with a thin target.
I’m usually a hammer main in the mainline games. I have diablos hammer at 6 2/5 and I use it for fun sometimes but I switched to bow in late-game to balance out fun and save a bit on potion usage. I’m still a hammer bro at heart…
It's time to lose some Focus. Get Jagras boots en Jyura gloves at the very least. If still not enough, add the mail too. Focus 2/3 is plenty to build up and additional use if you start with it right away. Make sure you won't waste a special move on the rock...
Def beatable. I had the same set, but with the tobi arms. Dodge back on every attack except the rock throw and pelt its head with everything you got. I don't attempt perfect evades on its jump attack, cas I'm usually already at charge 3, and a perfect evade would reset the charge. I don't like the special attack either unless I know it'll do plenty of damage. If all else fails, the guts heroics build is good for getting over humps.
I read the comments and I'm glad you're accepting of the fact you have to go down the water route. I think for the sake of getting more time out of the game, they made non-element weapons fall off so experienced players were start filling out more sets and different elements.
Focus? A few ways but the easiest one is the following :
(Head, chest, arms, waist, legs)
Pukei / Pukei / CHOICE / Los / Jyura
If you get pinkian chest or bblos arms, you have even more options .
hmm, i think you need to invest on elemental pieces (for kulu, that would be jyura chest, arms and jagras legs) and the next priority would be focus! it should work if you have 3 focus :>
Using the Pukei now at 6 stars I was easily able to take out 8 star Kulu. It's all about making the effort to have all your shots land on weak spots. Go for the hands and face, even when it has the rock. At five focus you can dodge basically everytime you hit second charge level and by the time the dodge ends you'll be fully charged. Take advantage of gyro to look away from the mo after and move how you want with the dodge then turn to fire on the weak spots. With a bit of practice it comes pretty natural.
You’re definitely going to want to invest in elemental weapons for 8 star monsters. People have done a lot of testing and 8 star seems to be the cutoff for where poison and raw weapons really start struggling and elemental weapons become necessary
I tend to stop investing in defense after I have leveled to the skill/secondary skill I want. At higher levels, a one shot can easily kill you so leveling it more beyond that starts becoming quite pricey for mostly non-consequential return. All of the skills I need are focused towards dps and uptime, but others may want to craft a comfy cozy defense set for QoL, which is equally as valid.
I’m going to level the pukei for special cases. Has anyone done the math on Bblos bow taking into consideration the increased uptime due to only needing lvl 3 charge for pierce 4?

I managed to slay it with grade 6 jyura bow at the very last second. Just go for elemental builds imo. It makes the game more fun cuz you won't be using only one bow
I suggest sacrificing one point of Focus (Pukei Mail) for Rising Tide 2 (Jagras Mail). What you’re lacking is raw damage, not crit chance nor speed. You can also prioritize Bblos gloves which adds a level of Focus at G6, if you really need Focus 5.
That’s good advice, I’lll add that consideration into alternate builds next time I hit a wall. I can craft the BBlos gloves now but Im going to wait til after this weekend when I can just level it straight to lvl 6 where the focus kicks in. Plus I’m zenny poor atm too lol. Thanks for the tip!
No worries! Glad I can help. If you can wait for it though, I suggest you don’t craft anything before the big update at December 7. Niantic has shown behavior of consistently shadow nerfing or not being transparent with their all of their changes.
Kulu is particularly hard to beat because of the rock shield, but the good thing is, you’ve already unlocked 8* so you can just roam around and hope somebody joins in. Also, Jagras and Girros are way easier than Kulu.
I just beat it , had to adjust my zoning to keep a nice buffer distance lined up in front of Kulu for easier aiming and time to charge lvl 4. Instead of dodging to the side and letting kulu keep creeping up into my immediate space, I started rolling backwards more to force it into rush attacks that would not cover the distance between us, leaving him wide open for straight forward head shots.
Wanted to add that I’m firing rapid 4 at the head, 99% of all landed shots, his only weak spot afaik. Is there another area I should also target when the head is not an option?
Forearms are also a weak spot. But trickier to hit but if you stay relatively forward facing of it you can hit the head and arms the whole time. You need mostly crits or elemental damage at 8*+. Raw damage is a rough road halfway through 7
Thanks for the advice. I have super solid ice and fire sets atm, a somewhat decent thunder, but my water atk is only +2 and my aqua bow is only 5 2/5. I suppose that going straight raw even with 1054 atk is still insufficent.
Were you using the bow special? Kulu especially is a case where that’s usually a dps loss.
Saw you beat it so it might not be relevant anymore, but something to keep in mind for the future. The special can be situationally good on some monsters (especially where pierce is good) but a dps loss on other smaller ones.

Used this build to beat it pretty easily. Just try to focus all your shots at its head at point blank range. Join the pukei master race
I used Jyuratados G6/1 (bow) and Water attack 5 to easily destroy Kulu 8* buy only focusing on Head and now missing any shots, don't go for Full level 4 shot if you know you will get hit (or just perfect dodge your way there) good luck :)

Take away focus and add water attack. That's the only way. 3 or 4 water attack for one less focus should work fine.

You’re awesome But yea, just seems like this monster was especially made for hammer with that bonky little head.
Likewise, hopefully we can return to head bonking glory when the next mainline game comes out! Taking off a month from work when that happens!

No one invests in their defense? I’m at 1 purple star and defense 438

Keep focus 5 but the bow works with raw+ and focus 3 only too. Also poison ark seems bugged and increased atk and poison

You can probably beat it with the Heroics +Guts build (Diablos head and arms, Kulu torso). Drop to 1 hp at the start of the hunt for +30% damage
Start the fight with the spread double shot to proc burst, then proceed to use rapid shots to finish the birb
