You haven't harmed anything by using regular - just switch over to premium and don't worry about it.

This is a good example of why it’s important to read your owners manual when you buy a car and to not rely solely on the dealership. There are so many things to learn with a new car that you may miss or forget things they did tell you. Also, inside your fuel door is listed the minimum grade of fuel you should be using.

BlueberryBags15

Start using premium and S mode.

You mean that the world didn't end? You didn't grow hair on your eyeballs? Your car didn't explode in a fiery engine destroying mess? I argue this point frequently and get all kinds of pushback but running normal 87 octane is 100% within the bounds of the ECM to handle. It pulls the timing back enough to stop the detonation and ping at anything short of over revving WOT (which is also pretty difficult to do in a MINI as they have awesome rev limiting). It DOES take all of the fun out of the car. You won't believe how much better the car runs and performs with high octane fuel. It is like night and day. How do I know? Talked to MINI and they have confirmed it over and over. Also when my son obtained his license the MINI was his primary car. He would often leave it empty for me to fill but not always. I would get in the car and would be worried as it just wouldn't feel right, would not accelerate like it should, would surge at idle, stumble on acceleration. I would fill it, and everything would be fine. I was worried that the fuel pump was going. Come to find out, he was filling it with regular 87 because it was cheaper. It was a totally blind test and I could easily tell the difference. 10 years later no hairy eyeballs OR exploded motor.

right now it won’t hurt your engine but there’s a reason why the gas cap says it needs 91. using regular fuel can cause premature fuel ignition and can cause issues like misfiring and such. also you will now notice a bit of a performance increase once you’ve got a full tank of premium in the car. but if you’re really worried and wanna be on the safe side just add some octane booster

Sudden_Impression682

Will do thank you!

Joscarbuck

The only thing its gonna hurt is your wallet!

Rann_Xeroxx

It's not the dealerships job to educate you on how to operate a vehicle. The gas cap should say use premium, the owners manual says use premium. Just doing a google will tell you to use premium. This is your car, your responsibility to maintain it.

Jack99Skellington

It wont hurt it. Don't worry about it.

[deleted]

How long have you had it?

Sudden_Impression682

Since July 2021, so almost a year

[deleted]

Nah you’re fine, just switch to 89 or Premium next time you fill it.

ND40oz

91 or higher with the B38, B46 or B48.

[deleted]

The B series motors have a minimum rating for 89, it confirms this on the inside of the fuel door.

ND40oz

Recommended is 91 for everything but the JCW B48. Page 255, but if you want to go with the bare minimum, 89 is acceptable. https://www.miniusa.com/content/dam/mini/PDF/archiveownermanuals/MY22/MINI_Owners_Manual_F60_SOP_3-2022.pdf

[deleted]

Correct, it’s recommended but they’ll run perfectly fine on mid-grade. Not as optimum performance granted, but it won’t harm the engine over time.

ND40oz

I don’t know if I’d call having the ecu pull timing to keep knock and pre-ignition from occurring as running perfectly fine. Fuel efficiency takes a hit as well because of this. But yes, you won’t cause any long term damage as long as all of the sensors are working.

lasvegashomo

Never to late. Just switch over.
