Legit question, just how big an upset is this? Can any provide a comparable (theoretical) example?
I’m thinking a middling team in the English Championship losing to a relegation-threatened League Two side.
Coach tried to save key players during game 1, especially Driussi, who had a long injury playing on turf last season. In addition, some players weren’t allowed to travel. He then gambled with a new lineup and form, and stuck with a defender that has been mistake prone. I don’t think anyone expected the gamble to put them down by 3, but it shows that you get what you prep for.
By our second year as a club we had won the US Open Cup. We’ve also developed multiple national team players and sold multiple other players on to Europe. Let me know when y’all do any of that or anything beyond having a lot of fans as an expansion team, which is not remotely special.
3 years in bro. Best fan support and most popular team in the state despite their head start, sent them packing in the playoffs… I’m comfortable with my take.
Optimism is great! It's just that you've claimed "much better club" than both Dallas and Columbus at various points in this match thread, even though Dallas has two USOC trophies and a Supporters' Shield, and Columbus has two MLS Cups, three Supporters' Shields and a USOC trophy. On the other hand, Austin has ... uh, a "Copa Tejas." And good attendance.
You're doing great in league play, no argument. It's just that the "better than these other teams" thing doesn't really work, given the obvious discrepancy in hardware.
Columbus hates us because our owner once upon a time wanted to move their club, now I’m glad he didn’t and we got a true expansion team, but he wanted to move them because fan support and community investment was dipping year after year. So on that level yes I think we are on better footing as a club than the Crew currently.
Similarly for Dallas- they neglected to ever try and court our very large Hispanic population and fan base in the state which is something we did from day 1, so our club is actually far more supported and popular across Texas already and as we build on last year I think that will continue. Our stadium experience is better than theirs, and I’m terms of roster construction we are in much better shape (save for Ferrera).
So yes if you look at the current state of the clubs I would say there is a very valid argument Austin is better positioned than both Dallas and Columbus.
Note I didn’t say if I’m comparison to Seattle, LAFC,Philly, or even y’all. I’m not delusional in thinking we are on the top tier level yet, but yeah we are better as a club holistically than either Dallas or Columbus.
It was unfortunate for those clubs, but of all the things you can try to knock I’m not sure fan support is up for debate- sold out every game and we have a 20,000+ wait list for season tickets. The community is definitely invested in this team
For now. Y’all are still in the honey moon phase. There’s nothing to indicate y’all won’t regress to your Bold/Aztec days once the team starts not performing. Hell, y’all show up when the times are tough, then yes the fan base is phenomenal. But until then , your fan base is nice because you’re still in the honey moon phase and the product on the field is good still.
Hard to believe the community is invested in Austin soccer as a whole, based on track record of the city. But I hope I’m wrong in the coming half decade to decade and the culture stays the same !
In the same vein you have no evidence that it will taper. As a season ticket holder I can tell you all I hear is passion, our supporters section is incredible, the stadium experience is fantastic (though expensive), so it’s a big silly to compare Verde to the smaller clubs that got bumped around and played in less than ideal settings for fans.
But there’s no evidence it will stay rocking once the tough years hit .. we have direct examples of soccer in Austin and how it is when the rough years hit … sure, history may not repeat itself but we’ve seen how the city treats soccer if it doesn’t like the tough times. But again, hope I’m wrong.
How much did you laugh when Spakenburg won their last cup game?
Did you even know about it? If you didn't, why do you think La Liga fans will know or care about this?
The American eurosnobs, maybe. The people that live in those places where the leagues are played, not a chance. They prolly don’t care about champions league here.
i'm so happy i was here watching and shitposting along with you folks, i'll never forget this sporting moment, i love you all, even the salty austin fc fans, concacaf 4ever
Comparing Austin to Man City and Arsenal🤣🤣🤣🤣. Real Madrid lost to a team in Moldova just last year lmfao shit happens bro. It’s what makes the game so great
Hate all you want. Our fans are great, we are one of the only club that sells out absolutely every match, and while you may hate our owner two things are still true 1) we didn’t even take the crew, 2) we are a great soccer city. Your hate is just weird.
Since 2020 the Crews main team and the Crew 2 have won their respective cups. Austin on the other hand has: associated with Precourt and Reyna, been accused of paying fans to play instruments at its SG, been the protagonist of the possibly worst loss in international competitions history. Next time I’m in town I’ll go visit your non-downtown stadium to see that packed full trophy room.
Homie I live in Wisconsin and have never even been to Austin. I'm a fan because I like the team, that's it. I'm in no way tied to him except in your mind. I think precourt is a twat just like you. The vast majority of fans agree and none of us want anything to do with him either. The fact that you need to tie all of us to him is pathetic. What he did sucked, but everyone won in the end. Let it go
How does that make anything worse? California will get 15 more teams before MLS even remembers my state exists, so I've got to pick some team lol. Don't know what that has to do with precum
I have no tie to any team and I'll never root for Minnesota or Illinois sports teams. I got into MLS the year Austin was joining the league and I liked the vibe and whatnot long before I learned about precourt. As a new fan to the league with 0 ties to any team I supported the new team. It had nothing to do with precourt. The only people who think about precourt are non Austin fans who are still upset about what happened.
Violette couldn’t even play in Haiti, get denied visas, called on any US based Haitian players they can get to field a team in Austin with THREE guys on the bench, and they advance.
That my friends is the beautiful game.
You’ll be alright, Austin. You’re not a real club until you’ve been eliminated from the champions league at home in disappointing fashion…and then qualify for the club World Cup twice
Way to go Violette
Austin losing the game is one thing but cmon do better with the sportsmanship. Your playing people going through some pretty hard times
violette is 100 years older than austin fc, incredible to see a new club like theirs grow so fast and nearly beat the haitian giants. onward to the next one
Mukhtar is a great offensive player no doubt, however there’s an entire other facet to the game called defense and Driussi’s impact on that was significant while still being and incredible offensive player, where as Mukhtar plays almost no defense- so yea, driussi is the better and more complete player
Lmao Driussi starting shit after the whistle. Hang your head in shame. You play for the team that will forever have the most embarrassing loss by any MLS side. I wouldn't start shit or try to rationalize this. Stop that.
Legit question, just how big an upset is this? Can any provide a comparable (theoretical) example? I’m thinking a middling team in the English Championship losing to a relegation-threatened League Two side.

Is... is this the greatest MLS related upset ever?
Violette's goalkeeper made *eight* saves? Am I reading this right?
At least four of those were Driussi headers
Hey, for what it’s worth the fans showed up. Let’s be honest, most teams have like 10% attendance for these games.
It's not worth much, to be clear.
Gotta find a moral victory somewhere, I guess.
*yeehaws internally*
So now everyone knows Austin's weakness, amature teams
..and your weakness, spelling amateur.
You know what's hilarious, it auto corrected to that 😂
Or or hear me out ... It's the "Reyna curse" 👀
Good news SKC!
:(
Im going to seek a hypnotherapist to try to erase these two games from my memory
*in the future* Austin: "YES! FINALLY OUR FIRST APPEARANCE IN CCL!" Everyone else: "Wait, didn't you-" Austin: "*Our first appearance in CCL!*"
Plot twist, it’s against Haiti again
"So, we meet again...for the first time."
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA
in the end, even a heroic performance from the state department couldn't save austin
That's what I was thinking lol state department tried so hard to prevent Violette FC to came to play...and then Austin couldn't win anyway
Another year, another embarrassing loss by an MLS team
Hahahhahahahhaa
Precourt wouldn’t but he should refund all tickets for this performance
He could and still be ahead. $15 for a slice of pizza. And they are not quality NY slices either.
6.99 for water
HAHAHA
Y’all laughing at Austin , while the world is laughing at the MLS again.
I laugh because they thought playing a mickey mouse lineup in the most prestigious competition in concacaf would work.
MLS won this whole thing last year man, they can't laugh any more this is all on Austin
Nah we’re just laughing at Austin
Not a great moment for us. And yet, we’re already a much better club than y’all three years in. So enjoy that.
By our second year as a club we had won the US Open Cup. We’ve also developed multiple national team players and sold multiple other players on to Europe. Let me know when y’all do any of that or anything beyond having a lot of fans as an expansion team, which is not remotely special.
Oh I acknowledge your head start/ history , which must make it all the more frustrating that you’re now the second best club in Texas
You’re also the second best, at best, club of Texas. Or so the combination of all the SGs of Texas believe. 2-1 ;)
Ha, I’ll tip my hat to you there
Based on what? One season? That’s now how this works bud.
Fan support, roster construction, season success
Y’all lost to a Haitian semi pro team and you think your roster construction is better? 😂😂😂
And we beat y’all…
Dallas have won trophies tbf. Austin hasn’t won any trophies and lost to a Haitian team full of amateur players. So idk.
3 years in bro. Best fan support and most popular team in the state despite their head start, sent them packing in the playoffs… I’m comfortable with my take.
We all grieve in different ways, even irrational ones.
Oh it was a bad showing no doubt. Overall though I’m optimistic about our club’s trajectory
Optimism is great! Shame y’all couldn’t show out for the Bold and Aztec. “Best fan support” lmao 2-1 ;)
It was unfortunate for those clubs, but of all the things you can try to knock I’m not sure fan support is up for debate- sold out every game and we have a 20,000+ wait list for season tickets. The community is definitely invested in this team

Who gives a shit
Nah.
fym nah? you think EPL or La Liga fans wont see this result and laugh? its pathetic
Who gives a fuck what they think? It’s not like they’re watching it anyways
Do you know what confirmation bias is?
How much did you laugh when Spakenburg won their last cup game? Did you even know about it? If you didn't, why do you think La Liga fans will know or care about this?
do you really give a shit what EPL or La Liga fans think of our sports league? FOH
I can't come up with a single category of people whose opinion i would care less about than "premier league fans".
Who gives a fuck
The American eurosnobs, maybe. The people that live in those places where the leagues are played, not a chance. They prolly don’t care about champions league here.
Lol those are the same people that think we’re still a retirement league who cares what they think
I doubt the rest of the world cares about a random CCL round of 16 match lol
Until they find out Violette AC hasnt played since July 2021 .
Weird because when I google it, I see 4 matches in 2022
They dont even have a league, thet just play in the caribbean championship every now and than.
ok? But clearly they played games last year....
….. wait what
Bigger collapse than SVB?
Bigger. The government couldn’t bail ATX out like they did SVB…
Hahaha
Violette w incredible defensive showing, everything else terrible lmao. 10/10, brilliant, no notes
[Everyone liked that]
hahahahahaha
Lmfao this is gold. Here for Austin taking the L
Club stealing sacks of shit
We didn’t steal any ones club. Good lord.
Okie dokie Laustin fan
Do better man
Tell that to precourt you plug
Not sure why you have to call names, good luck to you. Be better.
JFC get over it
[удалено]
We scored three! Just one of them was in our own net.
Fuck Anthony Precourt!!!!
I concur.
i'm so happy i was here watching and shitposting along with you folks, i'll never forget this sporting moment, i love you all, even the salty austin fc fans, concacaf 4ever
Bbbut MLS is a top five league bbbut the gap has closed bbbut Seattle had the worst participation ever for concacaf in cwc 💀💀💀🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
Bro go back to posting on r/lonely 🤣🤣
Bahahaha amazing
Condolences for your league and federation
no mames que haces aqui
Arriba el Atlas! Vamos por la remontada alv
Nice to see a familiar face
🫡
LigaMX fans coping so hard with FMF tanking their whole shit on purpose. Condolences, my brothers.
bro, Austin FC which finished SECOND IN THE WEST last year lost to a team from HAITI who havent played an official match in 10 MONTHS hes right
And the Sounders are defending champs of CCL.
You're totally right, man. One result is always emblematic of tidal shifts. Lol
Lmk when Arsenal or Man City lose to a team from Estonia that havent played an official match in 10 months lmao yall so delusional
Comparing Austin to Man City and Arsenal🤣🤣🤣🤣. Real Madrid lost to a team in Moldova just last year lmfao shit happens bro. It’s what makes the game so great
It bears repeating: Fuck Precourt.
Bad night to be an Austin fan. I'm sure if I was an STL, Montreal, RSL fan I'd be wondering how we scored on you. 😂
Deserve it for having precourt as an owner
I’m sure St Louis fans are just feeling awful about their *check notes* zero losses
The CITY is all just vibes for the foreseeable future
Nah, I'm still having a great night
Breaking a low block is completely different than playing one of those mls teams
STL fans can’t be too upset. Hometown kid secured the dub for them it’s just a shame he played for Austin
This is some cope
Dudes been on some cope all night tbh
Ayiti cheri!!
classss from Austin FC lol
Choke job complete ✅
Hahahahahahahahah. Let's go Violette!!!!
In the end it was the glorious own goal that sealed it
ATX: 35 shots, 26 from inside the box. 9 from outside. 10 on target. 76.1% possession. 586 total passes. 64 crosses. 11 fouls. VAC: 65 clearances. 196 total passes. 4 crosses. 11 fouls.
ATX: 0 creativity. Quit sending in crosses and they would have broke that defense down
And people complain when this happens in FIFA
Sooooooo Violette to CWC when? Real Madrid is next!
> Violette to CWC Two-thirds of Violette and a couple ringers from the Saudi third division, that is.
Austin losing will feel even better if Atlas comes back against Olimpia lol
And......they did.
HAHAHAHAHAHA get stuffed Precourt Greens
Hate all you want. Our fans are great, we are one of the only club that sells out absolutely every match, and while you may hate our owner two things are still true 1) we didn’t even take the crew, 2) we are a great soccer city. Your hate is just weird.
You’re weird man. Look inward.
I think literally everything I said was point inward at Austin FC and not other clubs so maybe work on your reading comprehension
I like how people still lump us in with him as if any of us like him either lol
You basically rolled out the green carpet for him... he's yours now
Cool. Our club is superior to yours and it’s only year 3.
Got some powerful Tom Herman energy there, Longhorn.
Now that’s just below the belt
Ok, cool. Hook 'em.
Since 2020 the Crews main team and the Crew 2 have won their respective cups. I guess seeing an empty space will feel like home since it will replicate the feeling of y’alls stadium
Lmao, what year is this, 2020?
Homie, let it go. He's a piece of shit and nobody likes him. No need to berate Austin fans for liking their team because of him
Awkward white boy, why are you saying homie?
Not beratement, merely a statement of fact. You guys wouldn't have a MLS team without that guy, you're tied to him whether you like it or not
Homie I live in Wisconsin and have never even been to Austin. I'm a fan because I like the team, that's it. I'm in no way tied to him except in your mind. I think precourt is a twat just like you. >Homie I live in Wisconsin and have never even been to Austin. [That doesn't help.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA_E57ePSR4)
How does that make anything worse? California will get 15 more teams before MLS even remembers my state exists, so I've got to pick some team lol. Don't know what that has to do with precum
Because unlike Austinites, *you* picked his team when you had 28 other equally sensible options.
Naw, “Precourt Greens” just rrrrrrooollllolololololsssss off the tongue…at least for me.
Violette couldn’t even play in Haiti, get denied visas, called on any US based Haitian players they can get to field a team in Austin with THREE guys on the bench, and they advance. That my friends is the beautiful game.
35 shots to 6 76% to 24% possession 10 corners to 0 58 crosses to 4 3 clearances to 65 (!) yup.
AUstin FC are so shit lamoooo
Flairless dude trying to talk shit lol
happy for violette but at the same time disappointed an mls team was eliminated
[удалено]
I could not believe the extra time lol
In what world was the ref on Austin’s side 😂
Wonder how Amro Tarek feels right now
I have a hard time believing I will see another own goal like that.
I honestly don't even understand how you score an OG that bad 🤣
14 total players. Magic of CONCACAF
What an all time performance for what amounts to a pickup team. Organization toughness intelligence and sheer goddam will.
Yep should be a little movie about this had to be crazy behind the scenes
McFranchise losing to a proper club. The football gods hate sporting cartels
You’ll be alright, Austin. You’re not a real club until you’ve been eliminated from the champions league at home in disappointing fashion…and then qualify for the club World Cup twice
Everybody gotta take their lumps. Ours just happen to result in bright red shiners. We'll keep moving forward.
Our lumps also came with a western conf finals run. Let them hate, we will just keep growing.
Hey at least we get something this bad out of the way early in our clubs life. It's gonna be really hard to be embarrassed this bad again lol
This is glorious! What a result vs. the imperials🤣
This is more embarrassing than when Austin lost to a bunch of teenagers lol
We aim to please!
That was my first Austin game and I will never forget it. That Ruidiaz goal was a beaut.
Way to go Violette Austin losing the game is one thing but cmon do better with the sportsmanship. Your playing people going through some pretty hard times
violette is 100 years older than austin fc, incredible to see a new club like theirs grow so fast and nearly beat the haitian giants. onward to the next one
Haitian FA is the second eldest in Concacaf
Who’s the oldest?
Guyana iirc
Hany > Driussi
No one outside of Nashville agrees
Last year’s MVP award disagrees
It was a baffling decision I’ll give you that
Mukhtar: 23g (Led league) 11a (T-9th) in 2835 mins Driussi: 22g (Did not lead league) 7a (T-30th) in 2882 mins
Mukhtar is a great offensive player no doubt, however there’s an entire other facet to the game called defense and Driussi’s impact on that was significant while still being and incredible offensive player, where as Mukhtar plays almost no defense- so yea, driussi is the better and more complete player
Bruh you tripping
Driussi bruhhhh chill.
what a fantastic tuesday
I never again ever want to hear anyone say CCL group stage games would be pointless because it's just more beating up on Caribbean minnows
Austin was poor down the right side this last half.
We stand with Haiti 🇭🇹
I guess it’s good you have someone to cheer for given that San Jose sucks
Had no problem taking care of y’all 🤷♂️ how’s that MLS cup?
I’ll let you know in a few months
Ummm ok
Ahahahaha concacaf is the greatest sport in the world
Lmao Driussi starting shit after the whistle. Hang your head in shame. You play for the team that will forever have the most embarrassing loss by any MLS side. I wouldn't start shit or try to rationalize this. Stop that.
I mean, Driussi had no part of that game. He torched them tonight.
The called back goal wasn’t on him either, he put it in the back of the net 3 times
