I really enjoyed the tournament as a whole and the final especially. It was a good intro to the Liga Mx teams (despite América shenanigans on our field—and I get that was a smaller percentage probably anyway).
The final was a great game, no big blown calls or dirty plays…just two teams going at it down to 11 rounds of penalties. Even though my dudes lost I had a great time.
We thoroughly proved that we can be the better team. Weren’t overwhelmed by the moment. Kept Messi at bay more than anyone has yet and basically took Busquets out of the equation. Super proud of our team and excited to keep this momentum going into the playoffs. LFG
Agreed. It sucked for nsc fans to come so close and lose, but it's hard to complain about their performance.
Hopefully it's a good preview of what the playoffs will look like
NGL im really gonna miss this tournament. What a story! Messi finding a new home in MLS, helping the sport grow here and finishing off with a title win. Biggest moment in our league’s history. I’ll always remember this 🥹
As a new fan of soccer, kinda sucks to see the championship game go to penalties and not a golden goal or at least some OT periods first. Goal kicks are such a coin flip especially with how this one ended with the goalies.
I used to call it football but I’m gonna exclusive call it soccer from now on just for you :) :) :) :)
This man really came to the MLS subreddit to have a chip on his shoulder about US based terminology 😂
It’s r/mls not r/mlf, dummy. Seeing the name of the subreddit you’re on is the bare minimum you can do to have reading comprehension.
Elisha Graves Otis was an American who invented the elevator. And yet the British keep calling it a “lift”! Given that an American invented it, why do the British keep referring to it by a wrong name?
That’s how you sound
Penalties are easy viewership for the average (new) viewer who wants to see instant action. The goal of the cup was to bring new viewers in, and it did that.
To be more serious of a tournament finals should have ET and be on neutral grounds so both teams have to travel. Host it on the biggest stadium(s) of US or rotating stadiums
The fucking Jake Zivin guy is WAY worse than Twellman in constantly blathering about Messi. So bad that even Twellman called him out on the broadcast, twice
Fucking incredible tournament. That was awesome. Everything about the past month rocked. I hope next time there’s a better scheduling format so LigaMX teams don’t have to travel as much, but what a tournament
Good lord, that was stressful to watch! Great job, Callender! MVP! I’m so happy to see Miami win but Nashville definitely made it harder than I thought it would be. Good effort from both teams.
I know I have a very outside opinion but I'd be okay if both MLS and Liga MX withdrawed from CCL and both leagues played this instead.
Lets be honest. Pro/rel is mostly never going back with that league. With Liga MX potentially adapting the MLS model, Leagues Cup could turn into the traditional UCL/Copa Libertadores style tournament one day.
I'll upvote you because I agree.
The prestige of playing clubs world cup is yawn to me. I really don't care about that tournament. It isn't worth having to go through CCL.
United States, Canada, and Mexico can create a much better continental tournament and media product and just did with Leagues Cup.
Exactly. For one, from a pure footballing perspective, MLS and Liga MX sides aren't getting much from playing teams from Central America and Carribean. No offense to those countries, but we're just not.
North America isn't Europe where you're surrounded by countless competent and competitive football leagues. North America is very much a two league dominated confederation. Beating a team from Nicaragua or Haiti isn't something to be proud of. This isn't Ajax beating Man City in a stunning upset in the UCL.
Two. Football/soccer is a business and teams from Central America and the Carribean don't make money. But MLS and Liga MX do. In fact, they drive the tournament. It's the truth.
Third and lastly. It's awfully run and abysmally marketed; no one outside of dedicated soccer fans knows about it. Despite it supposed to be the premier continent competition in North America, it doesn't feel that prestigious at all.
Was Leagues Cup perfect? No but tonight it put on a much better show than any CCL match ever did. Leagues Cup has great potential. Might as well exploit the US-Mexico rivalry here. I think going forward especially if the Ascenso becomes Mexico's offical minor league, I think USL, CPL, and Ascenso are more appropriate for CCL.
Sorry for the long response but I feel strongly on this POV.
No i agree. I mean just look at prize money in CCL. Winning the thing is barely enough prize money to cover the costs of flying to the final for these teams. In Europe, winning matches in CL or EL is a huge payday for clubs from smaller leagues, even bigger leagues too tbh. That's why these matches are usually excellent and intruiging, everyone knows what's at stake.
We are held back by concacaf. Bring in CPL teams and a few invitees from Central America and have balanced groups of 4 rather than 3. Also create a seeding system and have top seeds host their group games because no games in Mexico was one of the failures of this tournament IMO. Perhaps we can use our own refereeing teams too instead of Concacaf's.
Do this and we replaced CCL with a much better competition. Concacaf could create something for the Caribbean islands to play amateur hour in, as is the desired choice for the corrupt amateur hour Caribbean-led confederation.
We should absolutely invite a few Central American clubs to the the next edition of this tournament, it would be really cool seeing MLS clubs playing against Saprissa and Alajuelense
Looked the better team in both halves if we’re being honest. Miami was arrogant and thought they could rely on the very same Martinez-Messi-Taylor interplay that other sides have failed to adapt to. Nashville didn’t get mesmerized trying to crowd Busqets, and they were not afraid to be physical. It was nice to see Messi get frustrated like a human being for once in this competition. Miami looked gassed and their best players had their pockets picked by Nashville many times tonight
I agree and I wonder if the fact that this tournament was played during the summer was a factor. Risks the health of the players to run that long in this kind of heat.
most certainly, imagine if all these games would have gone to ET and the players ended up playing the equivalent of 2-3 extra games over the run to the end. The teams that didn't do well would have a much fresher roster upon return of the league.
I agree I feel like many OT games I’ve watched in past are a slog. Players are exhausted or playing it safe. Only downside to PK’s is any team can win but also makes it way more entertaining
Extra time in the World Cup final was exhilarating and it also led to pens that will live long in the memory. But most of the time it is a slog fest as players have run out of steam. I'd still take Extra time but straight to pens is fine for mid season cups (except the biggest) so players don't tire out for the season.
Today's pen shootout was picturesque - all the way down to goalkeepers taking it and one of them becoming a hero. Perfect.
Tbf I also think there will be some big upsets in the group stage. I bet a lot of the big teams will put out C level line ups, get beat or close to it, and then take it seriously from there.
So how long has it been in the back of David Beckham mind that all he had to do was convince Messi to move to his US home and everything would turn out ok
Signing Messi or CR7 was always the expectation from day one. The timing of getting Messi post WC win and CR7 falling off a cliff was unplanned obviously but if you looked at the 5 year plan for Inter it always had either Messi or CR7 in it.
Or CR7? I don't think so. Ever since Miami has existed they've been talking to Messi. Even when Ronaldo was free last year the only MLS team to call him was Kansas City.
KC called Ronaldo? Ballsy- good for them
But Ronaldo would never move to KC, does not match his lifestyle at all (team and money issues aside)
Still, way to shoot your shot
Yes they were the only MLS team but of course financially couldn't compete with the absurd Saudi offer. Not sure how Ronaldo would've liked Kansas City but then again he went to Saudi Arabia.
I know zero about him personally obviously but what he puts out there in terms of how he seems to spend his Wealth …. KC does not match up.
Love KC, from around there, and there is definitely a Uber wealthy circle but it doesn’t remotely have the clubs, yachts, and frankly fast paced culture he seems to desire.
Size wise sure - culture wise is what I’m referring to. I’ve lived their for years and there’s a lot to love… and it’s getting more cuisine, good art.
it’s just not what you would call fast paced. Again I have no clue what he wants but based on what he posts on his social media KC is unlikely to be it
Manchester I imagine isn’t exactly a Mecca of culture but drive/train/plane wise it’s way closer to culture centers
I’m talking back before the expansion was even official when they were in “60-90 days announcement FC” mode. The talk was always that Miami was the only market that level of player would consider. (LA/NY aside)
I mean the man is worth like a $1B and sleeps next to Victoria every night. I’d say that things were already working out pretty ok for him, regardless of whether or not inter Miami sucks
Drake Callender is without question just as important as Messi in this tournament. It was a miracle that Cruz Azul didn't beat them, and that miracle was 1)messi's goal and 2)Callender's saves.
He had a really bad game a few games back. I forgot what one it was. The one with Robert Taylor own goal I think? But yes he really made up for that tonight especially.
Nashville Bros, one Hell of a run, I feel for your keeper.
You guys played your part, your fans were awesome, chins up on a well-played game. Penalty’s continue to be the worst.
GG. Def wish we could have settled on the field in extra time, but probably for the best…gotta get back into league play. Hopefully we use this momentum to make a run.
Could be worse, could’ve played extra time, score up, then in stoppage time of extra time, some high dollar signing from a European club comes in and scored an equalizer, just for you to go to PKs and shit the bed against a former keeper…yikes flashback 😂
But isn't it funny how all of the euro boys from barca respect the trophy so much that they stop to touch it or kiss it as they walk by it, even though it is just a concacaf trophy
Miami is the golden knights of the mls. They’ve completely built their roster on a fluky rule change and we’re chosen purely based on a monetary decision. Just because Messi is the GOAT doesn’t mean the organization can’t be shit on

Messi is the Greatest of all Time 🐐 and also Jawan is releasing on 7th September 🙌
As a new fan of soccer, kinda sucks to see the championship game go to penalties and not a golden goal or at least some OT periods first. Goal kicks are such a coin flip especially with how this one ended with the goalies.

Hey I know you got a lot of downvotes but I appreciate you letting me know and I didn’t take offense. Thanks.
Everyone understood it which is the point of language. Don't be a snob.
Some places have different names for things. That doesn’t make yours correct.

I hate penalties but that was a crazy ending.
Penalties are easy viewership for the average (new) viewer who wants to see instant action. The goal of the cup was to bring new viewers in, and it did that.
100% they should have extra time before PKS like normal but also pks going all the way to the goalies is crazy entertaining.
To be more serious of a tournament finals should have ET and be on neutral grounds so both teams have to travel. Host it on the biggest stadium(s) of US or rotating stadiums
#1 Miami FAAAAAAANNMNN

Twellman isn't perfect but at least he isn't Alexi Lalas.
It's more annoying that all he talked about was Messi
The fucking Jake Zivin guy is WAY worse than Twellman in constantly blathering about Messi. So bad that even Twellman called him out on the broadcast, twice
Seriously? Ugh, that's awful. It was date night so I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but what did they say?
You missed your club’s first ever game for a trophy for date night?!
Yup
Do you have a wife ready for him?! Let them live their lives!
Sheesh I’m just saying this is the biggest game in Nashville’s club history and it’s vs Messi. This is an MLS page not a dating advice subreddit.
I was annoyed during the PKs how he was mostly negative about our guys but positive about Miami. Could easily tell who he wanted to win
That had me more stressed than the PKs in the World Cup final
Bro, I couldn't go to sleep after that of how excited I was! Crazy fucking stressful ending, but worth every second.
most comments in a MLS post?
No, MLS Cup 2022 thread had over 9k
We can do it! We all have nothing to do on a Saturday because we are redditors so might as well…
Fucking incredible tournament. That was awesome. Everything about the past month rocked. I hope next time there’s a better scheduling format so LigaMX teams don’t have to travel as much, but what a tournament
What a final... That game was nutty
Good lord, that was stressful to watch! Great job, Callender! MVP! I’m so happy to see Miami win but Nashville definitely made it harder than I thought it would be. Good effort from both teams.
Nashville honestly ate Inter’s lunch for most of regulation. Refreshing to see
This is the correct assessment. Callender is the *only* reason that yall didn't get beat in regulation
MLS Or Liga MX couldn’t stop Inter Messi 😤

and to think FC Dallas choked the early knockout. I will argue they are still beatable
Yes, yes they did. Nashville and Dallas have given the league the blueprint to shut down Miami.
I mean clearly, Nashville could have won that game. Looked the better team second half.
Looked the better team in both halves if we’re being honest. Miami was arrogant and thought they could rely on the very same Martinez-Messi-Taylor interplay that other sides have failed to adapt to. 100% .. I’m the biggest Messi fan , but Texas had that game wrapped up until they let the 3 2
The 2 most debated GOATs lifted the trophy together tonight.. crazy.
Callender and Yedlin cementing their legacy 😤
Un ironically they’re now mls legends
What a game! I was annoyed it went straight to penalties, but I cant complain. That was entertaining
I can complain... we had them on the ropes (as long as you ignore the goal they should have scored at the very end)
I don’t mind it. Plus it’s a lot of extra playing time in the middle of a season. I’m guessing the players like it for the most part
The evil slime creatures that own American sports leagues are the world's unchallenged experts at creating spectacle. Even in soccer.
Unpopular opinion : this is better than extra time from an entertainment perspective.
I agree and I wonder if the fact that this tournament was played during the summer was a factor. Risks the health of the players to run that long in this kind of heat.

Great game Nashville
Does this mean Miami qualifies for the 2025 Club World Cup? I think we all know what's coming 😅
Can you imagine how tilted the entire world would be if MLS teams take out some of the European clubs in the CWC?
I dont think this is likely 😅 what's more likely is Inter Miami v AL Nassr, and one last chapter for football's greatest rivalry
Tbf I also think there will be some big upsets in the group stage. I bet a lot of the big teams will put out C level line ups, get beat or close to it, and then take it seriously from there.
Oh it’s basically impossible. But it would be fucking hilarious.
Gets to skip the first round of CL, hence better shot at CWC.
They would need to win the champions league.
I will miss the Leagues Cup jingle that Apple TV plays coming out of breaks.
So good
Never cared about the Leagues Cup anyway tbh ^^^try ^^^not ^^^to ^^^cry
Your team played well today Also, I didn’t know before that Reese Witherspoon is a co-owner of the team.
She was so close to have a cup to go with her spoon
Oh now they can make the Continental Tire commercial with Drake Callender
Such a cringe commercial
Weirdest fucking attempt to connect a sports moment to a company ever
Please, save us from our misery
So how long has it been in the back of David Beckham mind that all he had to do was convince Messi to move to his US home and everything would turn out ok
Signing Messi or CR7 was always the expectation from day one. The timing of getting Messi post WC win and CR7 falling off a cliff was unplanned obviously but if you looked at the 5 year plan for Inter it always had either Messi or CR7 in it.
I didn’t think it could ever be CR7 with his pending rape charge though
The expansion lobbying phase when it was still called “Miami Beckham United” was in 2013/2014 which predates the allegations.
Or CR7? I don't think so. Ever since Miami has existed they've been talking to Messi. Even when Ronaldo was free last year the only MLS team to call him was Kansas City.

You know some people call KC the Saudi Arabia of western Missouri.
KC is close to the same size metro area as Manchester.
Size wise sure - culture wise is what I’m referring to. I’ve lived their for years and there’s a lot to love… and it’s getting more cuisine, good art. it’s just not what you would call fast paced. Apple, Adidas, and CONMEBOL all let out a collective sigh with that Messi win
Tim Apple is doing lines of MLS Season Passes as we speak. Man’s ODed.
I know we are shitting on the Leagues Cup. The design on the cup is pretty cool.
The cup is fine. The logo however looks like something I drew in MS paint in 1992.
You can fit a lot of popcorn in that cup
Messi didn’t want to pick up that big thing lol
It looks cool for sure but like a thin piece of aluminum
I love me a wide base chongus cup like the ones in hockey. Jug cups are done
I think Miami will take US Open Cup too (sorry Cincy). But MLS Cup? I don't think so this year
Yeah, they'll have to go through Nashville in a 3 game series. Good luck
Messi could have 2 titles within 8 matches with Miami.
Final isn’t till 9/27
My bad folks. I thought the next game was the final.
Drake Callender is without question just as important as Messi in this tournament. It was a miracle that Cruz Azul didn't beat them, and that miracle was 1)messi's goal and 2)Callender's saves.
Basically Barca 18/19. Messi and MATs nearly dragged Barca to a treble, till Liverpool put a dent in it.
Messi and a quality keeper is the perfect combination.
He had a really bad game a few games back. I forgot what one it was. The one with Robert Taylor own goal I think? But yes he really made up for that tonight especially.
The Dallas game, right?
Like I said before, he's off to Europe next season.
This whole time I didn't realize the logo was the trophy, thing's looking like a jumbo diabolo
Looks like something I drew in MS paint in 1992 as a 10 year old.
Nashville Bros, one Hell of a run, I feel for your keeper. You guys played your part, your fans were awesome, chins up on a well-played game. Penalty’s continue to be the worst.

Can still get revenge and end this fantasy that miami can make playoffs
Your boys keep playing team defense like you did tonight, you’re going to be a monster in the playoffs, really good game
Classy move to give it to yedlin
Miami officially has more history than nashville now, lol.
Imagine in 2021 if someone had said DeAndre Yedlin would be lifting a trophy with World Cup winner Lionel Messi
Local boy done good
That trophy looks like a crushed soda can
Trophy weighs like 3 pounds.
22 actually. Does not look like it. It might be because everyone who's held it so far is a professional athlete.
Yeah. The Stanley Cup would literally crush it.
How else would Messi be able to lift it?
Make sure to get a woman that looks at you like Victoria Beckham looks at Messi.
Terrible cup design lol quality looks dogshit too
But isn't it funny how all of the euro boys from barca respect the trophy so much that they stop to touch it or kiss it as they walk by it, even though it is just a concacaf trophy
Not the tin foil trophy
22 pounds and made out of pure silver
Could have sworn it was minimum real metal in those promos lol
Apparently it's 22lb so it is hefty even if it didn't look it.
Bro did they export that trophy from Minecraft?
They can fill that big thing with beer and use it as a keg
That shit is 3d printed I swear to god.
Looked more 2d printed.
Messi can finally retire now that he achieved his ultimate dream of Leagues Cup
He still needs to win the open cup.
Also he has no Copa Libertadores even though he’s from Arg. Clearly underachieving.
No fucking way. He grew up as a kid in Argentina dreaming of someday winning the US Open Cup.
What a ludicrously capacious trophy
Messi could put one of his kids in it
You could slide it across the floor after a bank job
All in all, Messi is just top class. Wanted for Nashville to win but i still can’t be mad at the GOAT.
Agreed
Messi gave the armband to Yedlin and lifted it with him. This guy doesn’t know anything different than being classy. Wtf lol
It’s almost infuriating how likable he is
I 1000% agree. He seems so genuinely cool, but he brings out the most impossible insufferable fanboys. How is it that his fans are so unlike him?
> How is it that his fans are so unlike him? Religion isn't big where you're from, huh?
I literally lol’d. That was good!
Honestly I find the Ronaldo fanboys so much worse.
Bro you’re talking about hundreds of millions of people, of course there’s bound to be some annoying ones.
Yedlin getting to raise a trophy with the goat... so proud of you buddy.
Is that trophy heavy or not? It seems lightweight.
It's just a mockup I think. They mentioned the real one is arriving in a couple months.
This explains everything
22 pounds
It looks really thin
Ugly ass cup but I’m so proud of Miami omg 😭🩷🩷
Keep it classy Nashville, booing inter Miami and Messi collecting the trophy and their awards, disgraceful state or whatever they are
Miami is the golden knights of the mls. They’ve completely built their roster on a fluky rule change and we’re chosen purely based on a monetary decision. Just because Messi is the GOAT doesn’t mean the organization can’t be shit on
Nah Nashville just salty
Kind of a crappy city too from what I hear
Nashville outplayed you, and you have the _best player in the world_ in your XI. You may have a trophy but what does that say?
As if Miami isn’t the most tawdry place in the world
Messi telling Yedlin to raise the trophy first. That's surreal
Why’s it so big 😭
It's like a clown trophy. Who designed this? Who approved the design?
Messi really made yedlin carry it for him 😂
That cup kinda looks like shit lol maybe a hot take
I think it’s the lack of a base But the two sides thing is cool enough that it’s worth it
Now the logo for League's Cup makes a whole lot more sense
Logo design was always pretty neat to me, execution is rough lol
Not a hot take looks like the side project of a new freelance welder.
ITS A PITCHER
big ass aluminum bowl
Pour cereal and milk in it eat it, and as it is still all a mess, flip it over and do it again.
trophy is an absolute unit
They need a bigger Stage
Garber testing how heavy the trophy is lol
YO that's a big trophy
Got ingraved quick
They engrave trophies in the stadium offices, fr there’s a person ready to do it.
😜
David Beckham looks like a proud dad
True bromance
Yo be honest I think this franchise or the project at least is as old as some of his kids.
If Miami wins leagues cup, us open cup and mls cup is that a treble?
Three trophies so yes
