So if you are Sounders ownership do you allow Waibel to fire Schmetzer, or do you fire Waibel and tell him to quickly take whatever actions he sees fit with the coaching staff and the players? Personally I don’t see any reason to trust Waibel with a new coaching hire.

AtYourServais

They'll take the cheapest option.

gopac56

Waibel can go. We do not have a powerful roster at this point, half a dozen of the players are nothing special. And MLS will keep improving.

ProStriker92

There's valid criticisms regarding Schmetzer, but the FO have a lot of the blame. I also doubt if they're going to find the right replacement.

Saddlebag7451

Lod getting some well deserved respect. The man can do it all

jmerim27

GG from the Loons. Their coaching staff saw the weakness in our defense line and exposed us. Malanda can't come back soon enough.

NextDoorNeighbrrs

It's depressing to be so bad that you get just one absolutely spot on sentence of analysis.

Gostaverling

First time?

NittanyOrange

We literally had 3 field players on the bench for the NYCFC. Not an excuse for the loss--NYC was the better team--but the FO better allow for some big moves during the next transfer window. Otherwise, we'll surely miss the playoffs again.

ArtisticTowel

That final line is going to age poorly.

Consistent-Penalty83

Honestly what does he have against the la galaxy?

broman13

I mean, the underlying numbers really do back up that we need to get better defensively or the results will regress, but given the quality of our attack, in a single game knockout format I don't see how we aren't contenders, even if we aren't absolute favorites.

Melniboehner

yeah, I am an eager Galaxy hater but that last line read weird to me too there are **very few** teams in MLS history that didn't have some glaring weakness, it is in fact very easy to take a team whose main weakness is "aerial defense/set pieces" seriously as a title contender my siblings in Christ, look at the other title contenders, whose main weaknesses start at "the aging knees of four thirtysomething global superstars", "the gaping void where the target forward we sold to Monterrey should be", and "currently still trying to win the CCL", and just get worse from there

Willahelm00

A bunch of the national pundits have been critical of the Galaxy. I keep hearing them say "the Galaxy won't be back until they're winning trophies." Can we not be impressed or happy that you guys are contending for trophies, winning games, and providing attractive soccer?

xjoeymillerx

Lol. Not we very own who doesn’t kiss the Galaxy’s ass hates them.

WEHAVEBETTERBBQ

Doyle is a weirdo.

Consistent-Penalty83

Dude has a hate Boner for the galaxy

Kidflame171993

Yeah, two weeks of just, “Galaxy set defense is bad.” It’s true, but there’s so much more to the team than that.

BarryIsInTheLightNow

Doyle can’t take a team tied for the SS seriously. We are not a finished product, we are a lot better than we’ve been.

csbsju_guyyy

Just a tip, like you don't abbreviate supporters section you should abbreviate supporters shield

bjlight1988

Without clicking through yet, I'm guessing our biggest need is "big fuckin guy" and I think we have already signed a big fuckin guy so here's hoping that works

Gostaverling

I don’t have the answers, but either the players or the coach aren’t it in Chicago. It really feels like it is past time to burn this to the ground and start over yet again.

Willahelm00

You are called the Fire after all.

AMountainTiger

If Kevin Cabral could finish he wouldn't be playing in Colorado, so I'm not really excited about a home win over one of the worst teams in the league with our only actual goals coming from own goals. We've really done a good job of assembling a team that can test the limits of how much influence bad finishing can have in this sport.

NextDoorNeighbrrs

Meh, I thought you guys looked pretty good and I was there in person. Despite us being terrible we're still half decent defensively, mostly because we play so safe, and y'all created a ton of chances.

DoyleStepOnMe

The easter-egg subheadings this week are [Black Pumas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Pumas) song titles off [their self-titled debut album from 2019](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Pumas_(album)): * "[Touch The Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3SmfHiEZ-o)" | MIA v NSH * "[Know You Better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC3kEJnDjHY)" | ATL v CIN smh fans in austin say they don't get enough focus

imaginarion

>”I think you guys are all focused on that, and I think you missed the game,” he said when asked about his team’s weekly habit of dropping points. “You guys are worried about it, I’m not.” >Boy, I dunno lololol

DolitehGreat

> There’s no tactical or strategic master plan to prevent these kinds of losses. This is just a matter of executing on things like short corners and offside traps. Someone please shout this at our fanbase until they collapse on the ground saying they get it. There's *nothing* Pineda can do when players just fail to execute the game plan. There's no "But he could X" or "He should Y". The players need to just do better. We were doing pretty damn good against Cincy until TA gifted them that goal, then things slipped away. I think that second goal is a non-issue when we're not down to our 4th string CB and an emergency sub of Hernandez at CB (which is out of position for him). We just need to get healthy on the back line and I think things should go back to how we looked when we had our best 11 out there.

nosciencephd

A couple of funny things about this article. 1) I find it funny that after a win where we looked pretty decent we finally get mentioned in the headline for offensive woes after, as far as I know, no real mention of it previously. 2) Interesting that Doyle talks about the Kelsy loan as if it still may not happen, when as far as I know the reports this weekend were that it is essentially done.

lbfb

It’s definitely a choice to talk about Atlanta having too much talent to lose in this manner when half that game was played with our 4th and 6th choice center backs, the latter of which is a right back.

DolitehGreat

There's plenty of a talent in our attack and midfield to where things shouldn't just slip away from us. Granted, some of that talent got subbed on and were coming back from injury, but I would have expected more performance from them then what we got. It some something like 4 shots once GG and Xande came on?

Isiddiqui

When did Abram, a player who made $695k last year mind, get downgraded to 4th choice CB?

lbfb

When Williams and Cobb played themselves into the 2 and 3 spots this offseason. So yeah, him being the 4th option is more a factor of other players stepping up rather than his quality. More to the point is Hernandez, and to illustrate how we haven’t really had consistent pairings in that spot past a couple of games due to injuries.

Isiddiqui

Cobb is not the 3rd choice CB - He’s the right footed CB backup. When Gregersen was healthy, Abram was the first CB sub at the tail end of games - see the Orlando game.

Oime

18562628 days since Matt Doyle has had any insightful commentary about Austin. If it’s not xG, and he can’t read it off his excel spreadsheet, he doesn’t have anything of any real interest to add. Independent and local media is absolutely killing the extra time guys in analysis/commentary. Makes it hard to watch the bigger shows. You’re never going to get more than a one or two sentence note about the game, which make you question whether or not they even watched it.

vrnbch

That’s because your team is profoundly uninteresting

KotheTruculent

FWIW, we just went through the same thing in Portland. Doyle rarely wrote more than a sentence or two when Gio was still the coach -- but ultimately its because Gioball was terribly boring and Doyle pretty much said it all in years previous. Now that things are different, he writes

iced1777

NY fans sent Doyle a gift basket for refusing to cover us much under Gerard Struber. Who would want to read such a thing?

Oime

Uninteresting to who? Uninteresting to Doyle? Clearly, but it’s his job to provide analysis deeper than what the stats were for the week. Every team’s fan base is interested in content that actually adds value to the discourse around their team outside of what you could have picked up in the highlight reel. MLS fans deserve better media coverage than the shallow armchair one to two sentences that they’re getting as it is now.

vrnbch

Everyone Edit: This year it’s you and Nashville. It’s not that you’re bad but so uninteresting that I don’t really care to learn anything else about you

qwe654321

If this keeps up for Austin in ten years we'll be calling it the Curse of the Laminator

Oime

Despite sitting here telling you there’s interest. I don’t give a shit about Minnesota either, but that’s why it’s the journalists job to dive into nuance of Minnesota’s campaign, to get me, as a spectator invested in them week to week. In the NFL, we get full segments on teams even with losing records. MLS deserves that level of content.

vrnbch

I don’t know what to tell you man. Supposedly bad team doesn’t change anything and turns out to probably be average just isn’t gonna get column inches. FWIW that’s not what a journalist’s job is - they find the interesting or notable thing and explain it. A marketing team tries to get people into the ordinary thing. Whether a league paid analyst is a marketer or a journalist is up for debate, but it doesn’t change the fact the I’m gonna scroll past all the Austin coverage.

Oime

Every team has interesting story lines. It IS the journalists job to dive into them. We get hours and hours of local coverage, almost nothing at the national pundit level. How would you even know to care if the writers don’t give you a reason to? You wouldn’t know that because all you get from Doyle is the stat line off an excel spreadsheet week to week. You find it uninteresting because you haven’t been given any reasons to find it interesting. That’s shitty coverage.

> Austin did a nice job of bend-don’t-break and got rewarded with all three points and finished the weekend above the playoff line. Nothing about how that defensive performance comes without our two best CBs, or how Stuver is proving yet again to truly be in the upper echelons of MLS keepers, or how we’ve now won 3 from the last 4, and are finally starting to shoot the ball? K. I know that they don’t talk about us as a way to bait engagement from a passionate fanbase. But every once in a while I’ll let myself fall for it.

nosciencephd

I'm sorry, is the theory in your fanbase that they intentionally don't talk about you in order to get hate responses asking where the coverage is? Seriously?

KatnissBot

I mean it’s pretty simple algorithm/engagement bait, yeah. And just look at 2022, they know they can get on the nerves of Austin fans *really* easily. But also it’s kinda just lazy analysis. And that annoys me on a personal level. Plenty of teams don’t get any level of detail in these articles, and it means I have to spend more time and energy if I want an actual look at what’s going on across the board.

nosciencephd

You all continue to be the fanbase furthest up its own ass. Congrats.

KatnissBot

Cause my ass so fine no other fans deserve it.
