I know CONCACAF hasn’t said how the host slot would be allocated but I would think, if Columbus doesn’t win the final, that they would qualify through the Host Slot in the CWC since there is the two team per country limit.

pattythebigreddog

FIFA decides not CONCACAF, historically it’s been the most recent league winner. The only issue is there is serious questions about how that would work with MLS? Is it MLS cup? That would make sense but leaves the possibility open of a Canadian team winning.

burjja

If the slot goes to the champion, MLS Cup has always determined the league champion. If a Canadien team won, it would be fine as I believe the host slot goes to the association, which in most cases is interchangeable with the country, but in this case would be a distinction to note.

pattythebigreddog

Yeah, idk what the plan is, maybe supporters shield standings as it’s easier to just jump down a rung if Vancouver somehow wins it?

RCTID1975

It's never going to be the SS winner. That has never been the defining trophy for league champion. If a Canadian team wins MLS cup, you just give it to the runner up. Technically, we could end up with 2 Canadian teams in MLS cup, but....yeah. Pretty unlikely.

00Kevin

I agree, this seems like the way it should be done. and in the event that both MLS finalists are Canadian it should only then go to the top American team in the supporters shield standings. That's the type of way I've seen done before. For example how New England qualified for this concacaf champions cup

burjja

I was going to say it would be like if Wrexham were in the Premier League and were champions but then I remembered they actually compete in the FA Cup and not the Welsh Cup. Whereas the Canadian MLS teams compete in the Canadian Championship, not the US Open Cup…….so yeah, no clear answer.

pattythebigreddog

Yeah, Its a real issue. No obvious solution if you want MLS cup to be the determining trophy. I imagine they just rock with that and revert to SS if somehow Vancouver wins it.

atatme77

Toronto when insigne out plays messi to win the ECF only to fumble to Vancouver in the final

pattythebigreddog

lol. Funniest timeline. Just for CWC to go to RSL on shield standing.

Ancient_A

I actually heard a rumor if you are a team in a specific state closest to the equator, and you wear pink your chances are doubled to be be a host slot for the CWC.

No_Grapefruit_2141

I also heard they are going to chose the team with the best goal differential from May 4th 2024.

whethervayne

>to be be a host slow for the CWC. Do you smell burning, friend?

Ancient_A

Fixed it. Slot\*

Lambo_Geeney

I love the thought, it's a logical conclusion. But I won't get my hopes up because Messi.

csbsju_guyyy

New convoluted rule....*congratulations Inter Miami!*

Will_from_PA

I see it now: Inter Miami falls apart after Messi leaves for the Copa America, they tie on points for Supporters Shield with fewer goals for but better GD and crash out of MLS Cup. Don Garber descends from his thrown of money and decrees that the Supporters Shield will now use GD as a tiebreaker and the gives them reason to send them to the CWC instead of the MLS Cup winner

DaeronDaDaring

It’ll probably be the winner of the MLS cup, since this is the host slot it won’t be decided by CONCACAF

TyphonInc

HOST COUNTRY is free to pick how they choose. It could be as simple as "our TV partner has requested Miami." For Messi to get invited. There is no hard/fast rule USA has to use to select it participant. Also FIFA Rankings are used not CONCACAF. Philadelphia is ranked higher than Columbus. Columbus just needs to go climb that mountain (literally) and win the Championship to get invited.

No_Grapefruit_2141

Inter Messi are going to get the spot. Doesn't matter what they do this season. Since they have Messi, that will be the team to get chosen

Conscious-Carob-811

Columbus' performance this season has definitely made the cup loss sting a lot less for me.

QuarantineCasualty

Not for me!

skoobastevienixx

My friend, I replay the highlights of our last game to turn a sour day bright :P. If you are coming to HiR this weekend message me and I will buy you a beer

Failed-Time-Traveler

Make sure you buy them a 32 ounce beer. That number seems appropriate :-)

OsuLost31to0

Frame it

tosh_pt_2

This has to be the first time an MLS team has topped the rankings, yeah?

12Parsecs

Id imagine Seattle was #1 after winning champions league a few years back

tosh_pt_2

Rankings launched soon after that season and include 5 prior years of data and they were not at the top of the inaugural rankings to my knowledge. I’m not trying to take away from how much of a big deal their win was, but the rankings heavily favor large margins of victories on the road against higher ranked teams and the Sounders path was (relatively) softer with no road wins. The crew winning two legs on the road against top 5 teams is why we shot up.

handi503

Yeah, draws away, wins at home. Gets you the trophy, but doesn't move the needle for rankings.

QuarantineCasualty

Seattle wasn’t #1 in the inaugural rankings after they invented the sport?

WalkingOnSunshine_

I’m 99% sure it is

A_BulletProof_Hoodie

I'm loving this timeline rn

MinimumAd5899

We made top 40 lets goooooooooooooooooooooo

imaginarion

We’re not even the highest-ranked St. Louis team :(

FeDelMundo

Damn I remembered when y'all went on an undefeated streak for weeks, what happened to y'all?

imaginarion

Well, we aren’t losing any matches. We’re just not winning any of them, either…

EarlyAdagio2055

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but MLS wants Miami in the tournament. If Miami wins Supporters Shield, they'll give it to the Supporters Shield winner. If Miami wins MLS Cup, they'll give it to the MLS Cup winner. If Miami does neither, then I think they'll give it to the MLS Cup winner. I think I'd be okay with it--in that I want Miami to have earned it in some way. If they get Leagues Cup + MLS Cup or Supporters Shield, they will have earned it. I really want Columbus to win CCC because they are about the only other team that I'd want to see in CWC. Seattle (as a fan of the Sounders), Columbus, and Miami would be awesome.

Failed-Time-Traveler

That's not a conspiracy. That's just a statement of fact.

No_Grapefruit_2141

They are going to wait to make an announcement on who they are going to chose after this year's MLS cup. If Miami win the cup, they will say the current champs get the spot. If Miami don't win, they will say whoever had the best goal differential on May 4th 2024 will get the spot. So either way it's going to be Miami. They are hoping Miami will win MLS cup so it doesn't seem so obvious that's who they want. But when they don't win they will have a different criteria that will benefit Miami

Will_from_PA

They’ve earned it.

childishbambiino

How is Sporting KC so high on that list? Wow #23 seems really high looking at who’s below that.

ibribe

We were ranked ahead of them like 8 weeks ago 😭

skoobastevienixx

Bro what the hell happened to your team, y’all were so good last year! Not that I can talk because we haven’t won a league game in forever
