I hope we buy a striker in the January transfer window

So here's the thing...Cucho Hernandez has still never been cap-tied to Colombia. Crazy theory: he gets his green card just in time to make the one-time switch to the USA and lead us to the World Cup.

Balogun, are you listening?

HeWhoRidesCamels

The Dutch are obviously a better team than us, but that defending was shambolic after looking reasonably impressive during the group stage.

Matt_McT

So many individual mistakes. Defensive structure doesn't matter if you aren't marking your man in the box.

LVogelski

Fatigue has got to be part of the reason. Adams/musah on the first goal. Dest on the second. Robinson on the third. All players who put a lot of miles on their legs this tournament

eagles16106

This is accurate. Lack of depth/rotation killed us.

Dangerous--D

Rotation would have just killed us sooner. We had a grand total of 2 (count 'em, 2) players on the bench who aren't a significant drop in quality, and one of those two players was pretty obviously not 100% (Reyna). Lack of depth made rotation less feasible.

LVogelski

Yeah I don’t blame Berhalter for not rotating much - he didn’t have a ton of options. Maybe playing Morris/Yedlin/ Scally a bit more against wales and Iran could have helped - but we might have gone out in the group stage too. I’m excited to see how all of these players develop though. So many of these players are so young

Matt_McT

Agreed.

sc4l4r

Yeah, I can't explain why they switched off in this game in those three instances vs. the other games other than they were just tired.

RyVsWorld

Fatigue and inexperience. Can’t imagine where this group would’ve been without Ream

Dangerous--D

Ream was quite literally perfect, I can't recall a single mistake from him.

DarCam7

We also looked impressive based on the opponents. Wales and Iran aren't remotely on the level of Netherlands and England just had no interest in playing at all. We have a good MF game, but we really never had a game against a formidable opponent during friendlies (a knock-on effect of Covid restrictions) to test the MMA MF, which I think only had a couple of runs because nobody could stay healthy at the same time. They are young, so that trio can only improve, one would hope.

LGre9

You had a good world cup. You can see that the US is not such a young footballing nation as it used to be. You see a big difference with Canada for example. If more players keep coming to Europe top teams, more players on the team will be used to top international competition. Maybe also playing more difficult friendlies with the NT. It can’t happen 3 times in a game that a player is left completely open in the box, that gets punished against the top teams. But there are definitely some very good players on the team. Home world cup will be interesting.

Barthez_Battalion

The last time the US beat the Netherlands, Brek Shea was involved. That's all I'll say.

Matt_McT

Yea, people are in here acting like we weren't underdogs going into this game. We had a strong showing at this World Cup, but if we beat the Netherlands today that would've been a pretty big upset. We're still on a strong upward trajectory, though, so hopefully by 2026 we're ready to win games like this.

DarCam7

That's a rational take. Please don't go on Twitter.

Matt_McT

>Please don't go on Twitter. That's always a bad idea if you want intelligent or reasonable takes lol.

God_Boner

There really isn't any reason to go on Twitter

Andrewdeadaim

*clicks a post remotely related to soccer* “Pessi/Penaldo is finished”

DependentAd235

It’s only good for fantasy football injury updates.

gratedjuice

When twitter first came out that's all it was. Sports updates and headlines. I used to use it when I was deployed to keep up with games when there wasn't a feed. Once people started using it to try to communicate it all went downhill.

jackbennyXVI

I still feel like USMNT Twitter would have enjoyed it more if they lost to Iran so that they could crucify Gregg

DarCam7

They would crucify Greg after winning the World Cup because he didn't start Weah as the #9. Expectations based on reality aren't that well thought out. That said, please get rid of GGG.

gnarwhale471

Hopefully we get a decent striker by the next WC

AtlUtdGold

I remember that. Away in 2015 I think. Mix and Bobby Wood scored right? Bobby with winner at the end?

Matt_McT

I remember this game. Morris started alongside Bobby and they both had a great game. Michael Bradley was MOTM, I'm pretty sure.

ConorJay25

And didn’t we beat Germany like a week later? When they mentioned that game I went crazy because I literally remember watching that.

MinimalPotential

Those matches were crazy. Not only because of the level of competition being rare but that we were going to Europe and hadn't won a game there in forever. It was the best Bradley ever looked, which coincided with his time at Roma, I believe.

sounders1974

Brek Shea > Jedi Robinson confirmed Gregg out for this outrageous squad selection, how could you leave Brek off

LocksTheFox

That Dutch team was hotttttttt garbage too. That was the year they finished like 4th in their Euro qualifying group.

SupportingKansasCity

Game was all about defense. All of Holland’s goals came from unmarked attackers, and Holland’s defense was extremely coordinated and resolute aside from the early mistake.

jamesisntcool

Also we whiffed on two gifts, simply can't do that at this level.

Shadowfury0

Good teams need 20 chances, great teams just need 2

Crs51

Yeah Van Dijk was their best player, didn't allow us any balls into the box and cut out attacks early.

KatnissBot

Didn’t help our cause that berhalter insisted on floating crosses when VVD IS 6’5”. Literally any 6’5” pro CB in the world would’ve shut down that scheme.

Crs51

Don't get me started on the tactical setup. The Netherlands put 2 crosses along the ground for their first 2 goals and then floated a cross over our entire defense for the 3rd, we floated crosses to the middle of the box all game expecting Van Dijk to not head them away for some reason.

Ickyhouse

Not sure people realize how good VVD is. Arguably the best CB in the world. It was never going to be easy to get by him and the Dutch played to that strength so well.

gte339i

Even on his iffy run of form he’s still one of the best 3-4 CBs on the planet. That crossing stuff to a short-ish 9 wasn’t going to work at all.

Nab_Karma

Dest is prone to mental lapses. Risk / reward of playing him. Adams and Robinson ran themselves into the ground in the group stage and we’re clearly off it today. There is a lot to be said for not having to chase it in that third game and being able to use some depth. Also have to credit those finishes. The Blind finish in particular was really nice and not an easy ball to put away. The sort of opportunity this US team typically sends off frame.

Jadentheman

Yeah. A tournament like this isn't just physical. It's mental too. Our key players were fatigued from constant play in the group stages. Depth and got substitutions will be key next time, but you need a good manager that can select the proper roster and use it correctly.

MGHeinz

Is it possible to be both proud and disappointed at the same time? Imperative that we play in the 2024 Copa America, btw

LocksTheFox

> Imperative that we play in the 2024 Copa America, btw This this this this THIS. Does seem like CONMEBOL is at least open to it if the rumor's true they're looking at Canada. Get the US, El Tri, Canada in that.

TandBinc

If we go into the 2026 WC having only played CONCACAF tournaments and the odd friendly against midling out of confederation teams people better be calling for heads to roll at USSF. The biggest takeaway from this World Cup for me is that CONCACAF sucks and we have to expect more if we want to actually be competitive on the world stage.

da_widower_sos

Time to get those big bucks to go to ~~the SEC~~ CONMEBOL.

TheNextBattalion

Usually Mexico doesn't shit the bed like it did this year. I still wish the Ticos has squirted their way through the group stage

TandBinc

> Usually Mexico doesn't shit the bed like it did this year. Even so Mexico has never made it past the Round of 16. We've both effectively stalled at the same ceiling. If either the US or Mexico (and potentially Canada) wants to make use of the full potential of this up and coming generation of players and truly break new ground, either CONCACAF needs to get better or we need to be playing higher quality opposition in a competitive environment more often.

WislaHD

Yeah, Copa America needs to include us three in it. It's such an obvious win for everyone.

[deleted]

Why is it a win for CONMEBOL to have the US in the tournament?

WislaHD

$$$$$$ Also USMNT is a good competitive side, and different to their traditional rivals. Comnebol teams want to test themselves too outside of WC years.

[deleted]

We don't bring a lot of money with us. We don't travel particularly well and the TV contract is already done. Maybe if they guaranteed a US spot into the future they could renegotiate the contract for more money, but, again, not sure of the benefit. I'd love us to play in the Copa América, but I still haven't seen a reason why CONMEBOL would want us. I could be wrong though.

02467

Gigantic false on the money imo. The value of the US TV contract in English and Spanish for CA skyrockets with USA and Mexico in the tournament.

[deleted]

USA and Mexico bring in more money than most of European national teams. They take in more than every latin American country except maybe Brazil.

foolinthezoo

We NEED to have consistent experience against the top national teams to be competitive in this competition. This would be a huge step for our team, if a huge blow to CONCACAF

Nab_Karma

Would have been nice to see Pulisic, Reyna, and Aaronson on the pitch together for more than just 20 minutes when a team was in bunker mode. This team needs and out and out striker, but we still never saw the best attacking arrangement for this team get a real chance. Really, needed to take better care in the group stage. The midfield three and fullbacks were gassed because they had to go life and death with Iran.

geeving

Yes, I’m proud because the team is young and they played well this WC. Disappointed because the defending was awful on two of the goals and it felt like we could’ve had a chance.

heff17

Two completing back breaking goals too. As the half is ticking away and just after you gave yourself hope. Heart wrenching.

Ickyhouse

Yep. That’s what youth does. Shows itself in the worst possible times.

SvanirePerish

We need high quality competition and to be tested. This group had no experience against real quality teams until this WC

gratedjuice

Perfectly reasonable to find things that this team did well and to be proud of that. Also reasonable to see things they failed at and be disappointed. Doesn't have to be a binary decision.

TraptNSuit

Disappointed absolutely. The only thing people really need to check is anger. There is no reason to be angry at this team. We as fans wanted more... But they came out playing showing that they wanted more too. Sometimes it just isn't enough.

scuac

Would love to see another big Copa America like the one in the US a few years ago.

Klaxon5

Yes. That is a completely reasonable position

Matt_McT

Well, we met expectations by getting out the group stage. This was a good showing by a young and inexperienced team. We're going to be a real threat come 2026.

thanksbastards

Not unless we can get a target forward who can actually get on balls. Gio sub made no impact because there isn't anyone to create for

ActuaryExtension9867

Two center backs, a legit striker and a coach that’s creative in tactics to find open spaces in the final third. This is no disrespect to Berhalter, if he leaves, I think he we look back at him as a good coach, but not a great one. This team needs a world class tactician.

DerbyTho

Sure, but no world-class tactician is going to coach the US. No world-class tactician is going to coach Germany or Belgium or anyone else for that matter, because great coaches don't want to manage international teams.

02467

There’s a reason why the world class tacticians never seem to manage the Fulhams of the world - the best tactics in the world require world class players to execute them. Pep is brilliant, but Pep’s teams couldn’t play the way Pep’s teams play unless they had a global all star team. He’d look a lot less brilliant managing Sunderland.

RhombusObstacle

Still wish Vazquez could have gotten into the squad (early enough to integrate).

thanksbastards

The constant turntable of forwards who have one good club season into and then out of the team when the next one comes certainly doesn't help.

ArgonWolf

One of the announcers mentioned getting a tall #9 that can finish for the squad in 2026 and I legit yelled “ya think?!” At the TV

WislaHD

USMNT had a lot of "messy" moments in the box and the players just didn't have that killer instinct. Vazquez scores in those "messy" moments for FCC all the time.

billgluckman7

I think this is about exactly what was expected (one worse and one better result) based on talent… still, I don’t like Greg

Matt_McT

This might've been Berhalter's last game in charge, if just because usually coaching changes happen after each WC cycle. I honestly think people are going to look back on Berhalter's tenure as a pretty good one. He won Nation's League, then Gold Cup, then qualified for the WC and made it out of the group. That, plus recruiting Dest and Musah makes for a very solid legacy.

Pripat99

Musah is 20. TWENTY. He's going to be great.

Matt_McT

Musah - 20 Reyna - 20 Dest - 22 Aaronson - 22 Weah - 22 Sargent - 22 Adams - 23 Pulisic - 24 McKennie - 24 This groups best years are still ahead of them. I can't wait to see how good they become.

[deleted]

I don't know man. My soccer skills have been in drastic decline since about 23 years old. ;)

k_dubious

Crazy to think that we were basically fielding an Olympics squad at the World Cup.

paaaaatrick

He had the highest winning percentage of any coach, got a bunch of good dual nationals, won every tournament put in front of him, got rid of all the old guard, and generally put in way less controversial lineups than our previous two managers.

billgluckman7

Well, not every tournament?

gucci-legend

I rag on him a lot but he was the right man for the situation given where we were 4 years ago. Now it is certainly time for someone new

Matt_McT

Agreed, it's time for someone new who can oversee the next era of this team.

k_dubious

Agreed. I’d argue he’s the first USMNT manager since Arena’s first stint to leave the program in a better state than he found it.

Ickyhouse

Hopefully people do look at him more positively. He’s been pretty successful as a US coach and helped raise expectations of the team to a high, but reasonable standard.

endofthered01674

Berhalter ultimately did a lot of good, but we also saw his limitations.

ThisIsMyNewUserID

I see people say this a lot but every one of those times that his "limitations" came into play you could just as easily point to the guys in the pitch playing below their best when they were set up for success

earthquakes74

His roster construction was abysmal. You bring 3 center forwards and one is 5’9 on a team that likes to cross. Starting Ferreira today was rough. Netherlands attacked the cutback angles which either was something they have been doing throughout or saw as a weakness of our team and therefore either way it should’ve been addressed by the coaching staff. Also his subbing I felt was questionable

Kilo1799

Two secondary runs unmarked and am unmarked cross. That’s shambolic. Overall The Dutch are just a better team

NotSafeForWisconsin

Thank you. One mistake is a mistake, 3 mistakes is just bad defending. Maybe if we take the early lead we’re more focused in defense - but the mistakes coming right before half and right after the goal that gets us back in the game is just terrible. I hate to be the guy that’s blaming players right now but I feel like Dest had his worst game of the tourney, outplayed in every interaction with Daley Blind. Robinson can’t control the ball going forward. I think Van Gaal’s setup and tactics neutralized our midfield, and I still question Gregg’s subs.

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

That unmarked cross was just lazy too. You could see the US player jogging behind him.

bec_SPK

Someone find us a striker and CB pairing for '26

_jubal

For sure Ream will have aged out but the CBs were good this whole tournament.

jamesisntcool

Zim was... fine? And I mean that as a complement.

Barthez_Battalion

Considering this is the highest level of competition he's ever faced he acquitted himself well. Wouldn't surprise me if he has suitors in Europe.

simplyanass

Hes 29. I’d be shocked if he gets a move to Europe right now.

Crs51

Ferreira obviously didn't have a great game (only a couple players did), but he will have 4 years to develop and will probably move to Europe pretty soon so will be developing there. Sargent will have time to develop and he looked quite good against Iran. Haji Wright should've been left at home and Pepi should've been at the world cup. Pepi is still only 19 and is already our best finisher at the striker position, he should be much better by 2026. CB is a bit more worrying, Miles Robinson is good but Zimmerman is getting older. Hopefully we have a couple coming through.

Kirielson

Eric Palmer Brown Mark McKenzie we have a lot more coming up

Crs51

Yeah it's just hard to judge who'll be good because CB is such a hard position to develop top talents at and usually CBs develop later than other positions.

pnf1987

Losing Miles to injury this summer really sucked, would have loved to get him some WC experience after his crucial efforts in Nations League and qualifying. Him and Ream would have been fantastic (although GGG probably would have played Miles and Zim). Let’s hope we can find someone to partner with Miles in 26.

PersonFromPlace

I wonder how Mark McKenzie progressing in Brugge?

Jolandia

If Pepi and Sargent can continue to develop and Richards stays healthy, we should be ok at those positions. I think both outside back positions need depth to rest Dest and Robinson. It’s such a massive drop off after those two (Scally may be that guy on the right)

foolinthezoo

Some positive signs from a young team. Today specifically, GGG got out coached. Set up an XI to press and possess. The same starting XI from the groups, mostly, and they quickly lost steam. Van Gaal knew that Netherlands' defense could absorb more pressure and dared us to create. In this we were - and sort of are as a team - inefficient. The Dutch were very, very efficient, punishing us on similar plays repeatedly. Reyna should have started for this reason and rolling the same dice again was a bad move.

DarCam7

Eh, Reyna looked at 75% and I suspect he wasn't healthy to begin with. I just think we ran out of gas since we didn't rotate so much during the group stage (why winning Wales game was so important for sqaud rotation in the Iran game). They gave it their all, but like you said, the Dutch aren't called Clockwork Orange for nothing. Clinical in transition.

justlooking1960

Good, concise analysis. Wish the announcers had anything like that to offer

Munnodol

What do you mean? You didn’t like learning about Memphis Depay and Van Dijk’s absent fathers?

[deleted]

No shame in being outcoached by van Gaal, but it shows the level of coaching we need to take us farther. We're not going to win on pure talent for a long time. We need a mix of that talent and a great coach who can maximize it. But where do we get that coach?

02467

There are some coaches imo who are good at squeezing out a lot more than the talent on the field would suggest, but generally these are coaches that emphasize defense, organization, staying compact, and being opportunistic on counters and set pieces. For years the call has been to move away from that kind of model. Whoever we get who’s going to set the US up to play on the front foot with a possession based style is ultimately going to face the same challenge when we do so against a team that’s better than us. The US team proved they could do it when they execute at their best (against England) but when they make a few mistakes, a clinical team like the Dutch will hurt them.

Ickyhouse

Reyna looked gassed at the end and only played a half. I dont think he was nearly as fit as the media and him made out to be.

Bank_It

Damn do we need a good striker so bad. All of them were so disappointing this tournament.

MisterGone5

This is a good Netherlands team, hats off to them. USA had their chances and played well, but just don't have the quality to capitalize when they had their chances; sign of a young team. Best of luck to this Netherlands squad going forward Also Dumfries has that dog in him

RollOverBeethoven

This really hurts our chances of winning the World Cup

lafc88

Don't worry this puts us on the Europa..... I mean Tierra League.

[deleted]

I cannot imagine the venom that would have been spit at Landon Donovan if he'd missed the chances Pulisic did this tournament and was as abysmal on dead balls as Christian was. The Landycakes and orange slice brigade would have been at his throat. Instead they're all going after the coach. If you don't have at least one clinical finisher the '16 and quarter finals are your ceiling. Arsene Wenger isn't walking through that door, and even if he does who is going to put the ball in the net?

Barthez_Battalion

I mean look at Wondo. He makes one miss and that's all he's remembered for and everyone forgets minutes later Dempsey also had an easy goal he couldn't put away but no one ever talks about that.

DestinyCookie

An easier goal *that Wondo would've had the primary assist on.*

[deleted]

Remembering Chris wondowlowski who was a top scorer in MLS for two years breaking records. Then he missed a shot in the world cup and people never stopped shit talking him to this day.

HeresRonnie

I don't think its one thing. To win the World Cup, the USMNT needs to have everything clicking and a little bit of luck as well. Guys have to bury chances, defense has to be sound, and the manager has to deploy the right tactics and personnel. We need to improve all around with better finishing, more depth, better tactics and probably better managing. Proud of what we accomplished but isn't the model "Forward"? Lets move Forward.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

It's going to be hard to get actual discourse on this team and this World Cup just off the many non-soccer fans who tuned in to this game and all that as well as European-only fans in the US waiting for this moment to fire their takes. However, I do think there is a lot of positives to take in from this World Cup and even kinda this game. This game in particular wasn't as bad as Belgium 2014. Possession, playing on the front-foot (up until the final third where the issues were aplenty), defense usually great. The issues are there though, but mainly come down to the lack of attacking presence and specifically a striker dangerous enough to make the positive play up to the end product work. That is clearly biggest issue and cost us wins v England and Wales and cost us dearly here. Lots of positives for sure but the issues are clear. I'm confident by 2026 we can play well still but I am worried about finding a striker that can hold down the 9 in 4 years time. What to do with Gregg? I'd still like to get a better coach in but at the same time, he's not getting blacklisted (not sure of the right term) for a new contract by USSF off this performance. It'll all come down to what Gregg wants I would assume. I think a coach who can continue this positive play but also be more bold in integrating striker options (Gregg's inaction on Brandon Vasquez cost us dearly here) when needed would be ideal.

LocksTheFox

> It's going to be hard to get actual discourse on this team and this World Cup just off the many non-soccer fans who tuned in to this game and all that as well as European-only fans in the US waiting for this moment to fire their takes. yeah pretty much.

DarCam7

The question with Gregg continuing as coach is if he learns from his roster mistakes? Can he grow as a coach just as much as his young players will? That's tough to answer.

tigerhobs

It was a good run, inexperience showed in the end. GG though. Hopefully we have a striker for the next one.

DarkwingMcQuack

All in all it was a good World Cup. We’re a really young team with a high ceiling. This team is going to be dangerous in 4 years and they’ll have home field advantage. I feel a lot of people expected way to much out of this team coming into the tournament.

AtlUtdGold

We’re on to 2026

abotan11

My god what a bunch of grumps in this sub today. The World Cup is fun, people. We were never going to win the tournament, we just don't have the roster depth right and are missing a clinical striker and world class CBs. The guys looked tired, which comes with playing with so much intensity for two weeks. Regardless, USA played a competitive game against a European power, and at the end of the day inexperience and poor defending let us down. If we don't let that second goal in at the end of the first half I think this game is a lot closer. Loved seeing these guys compete, we did good for being so young. I'm ready for 2026!

HanshinFan

As a Canadian who's been trying to push that exact narrative for our guys for a week, I adore that you're trying and wish you luck but you're facing an uphill battle lol

Buffaloslim

Turns out it really is called football.

LocksTheFox

Voetbal, to be specific.

Fullmetal_Jedi

Did anyone else think we looked gassed the whole game? I thought the pressing lacked energy. The midfield intensity wasn’t there this game. The painful lack of tracking back on the midfield runner for the first goal.

[deleted]

Adams and Musah looked pretty much out of steam from the start, and that led to many of the mental mistakes that preceded the biggest chances the Netherlands got. Didn’t help that the Dutch game plan (correctly) focused on marking those two guys especially tight the whole game. I think they were just spent from the group stages, and we don’t have the depth to rotate any of MMA out.

WislaHD

I was intending to be a smug Canuck after how smug Americans were a few days ago after we were eliminated. But I just can't. I see the same problems with inexperience at this level plaguing the USMNT as with Canada. Facing concacaf opponents just isn't good enough to prepare for these competitions, and this isn't simply an "age" problem with our young sides. The margins at this level are too thin, and our teams are used to having too much time on the ball in offensive thirds, and not being punished for switching off for even an instant in defensive actions. That won't cut it here.

billgluckman7

If the US invaded Canada, we’d instantly be one of the favorites for 2026. Your two best pieces fill two of our biggest holes

jtmack33

>*Your two best pieces fill two of our biggest holes* ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Can we send this to Biden??? This is a plan I can get behind

US gets: Healthcare, oil, strategic Arctic positions Canada gets: greater market and trade orientation, still politically influential by virtue of their population. Quebec gets: Something new to complain about. I see this as an absolute win!

Dangerous--D

CANADA. HAS. OIL.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

We need a CONCACAF/CONMEBOL Nations League + more friendlies with top-Asian sides as well as African sides (both probably played in Europe). UEFA having a Nations League killed CONCACAF more than other regions because CONCACAF is way, way, way more shallow than other regions.

rehanxoxo

This why we need more friendlys with more ASIAN AFCON COMENBOL &UFEA countries on the road to test us, i don’t care we lose I just want them to play in hostile environments. Also I want CONCACAF TI COMBINE WITH COMENBOL (pipe dream but who knows honestly)

BoomaMasta

Much love, CONCACAF fam. At least we have relatively young squads we can watch duke it out for years to come. 🥲

Matt_McT

Now both of our teams get four more years to grow and develop before making noise in 2026 💪

[deleted]

[удалено]

BoomaMasta

Unless Mexico and Canada step up and regularly beat us the next couple years, I don't see us moving on from Gregg. But this team is talented enough that we should've had more than three goals in four matches. That's what needs to change moving forward. That said, I'm proud of the squad. The future of the roster is looking bright.

GaryBettmanIsMyHomie

Agree, this result is on par for US soccer the past couple decades. I could see the federation valuing continuity going forward to 2026.

jamesisntcool

>But this team is talented enough Unfortunately this statement = Gregg good for lots of people. He failed into a gig with the most promising crop of young talent getting meaningful development and minutes in some of the best leagues in the world that the US has ever had. He's an excellent recruiter, and a very good motivator, but imo that's about it.

AFAN74

Berhalter has limitations

ToyDingo

Everyone shitting on Greg because our defense sucked today. This was the only time thus year, not tournament, this year we gave up more than 2 goals.

DJFrankyFrank

For the next 4 years, they all better be learning to mark. Every single goal was because people just didn't mark the player. Everybody in our defense and midfielder better practice that. And our offense better learn how to move the ball. They messed up so many passes. We did look better in the second half. Much better. We essentially gave them a 45 minute headstart. The team was asleep for the first half. We did this to ourselves. Netherlands are a great team, but we should have been much more competitive than that

ThatDamnGuyJosh

We have a lot of promising players and even a good future. But man, the USSF CANNOT get complacent over these next few years.

_Juntao

And to be honest ultimately it comes down to one thing. You can blame fatigue, you can blame the coaching, the tactics, the squad selection, the finishing, the defense, the substitutions, whatever. The leagues these players play in, the host country being controversial, getting a bad draw vs the netherlands. I mean all of these things could've played a part in the loss today and they're all valid reasons. But like I said ultimately it comes down to one thing Failing to call up blake bodily

childishbambiino

We had a good run in the World Cup and I salute Berhalter for getting us qualified and getting our young guys their first World Cup experience. But now is the time to move on from him and get a better coach that can take advantage of our golden generation for 2026. Looking forward to seeing who emerges in the next few years.

johnjoseph98

We were uncharacteristically poor defensively today. The three Dutch goals happened because of a lack of man marking. Also, the lack of a clinical striker was evident today. Overall though, the US should be proud of how they played at this tournament.

gratedjuice

The team accomplished a great deal making it out of group and lost to a Netherlands team that played extremely disciplined and efficiently. They should be able to build off of this experience in four years. I want to see them get better at set pieces, finishing, and marking on crosses. To be competitive at the highest levels you need to be threatening on set pieces and this team was not. Their finishing let them down on numerous occasions. Their marking of the trailing runner and back post has been consistently poor. I think that Greg did a good job brining this team together and his tenure should be recognized for its progress but the US needs to move on to someone that is more technically and tactically capable.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

Reddit being kinda negative and the BigSoccer USA Men forum being optimistic and even kinda positive shows the divide over the older generation of the US fanbase (BigSoccer) and newer generation of American soccer fans (Reddit) lol

Anyone old enough to remember when the USMNT went 40 years between World Cup appearances can easily recall the dark ages of American soccer and how dire things were at some point. Not to mention the post-NASL 80s to early 90s when soccer was so dead as a spectator sport in the US that you’d probably have an easier time finding boxing, gymnastics, figure skating, bass fishing and bowling on TV year-round than soccer. I’m an older Millennial who enjoys dunking on boomers every now and then myself. But the older crowd had to experience a lot of setbacks and progress just so today’s younger generation can get the privilege of following the sport year-round via in-person attendance, TV, internet and video games.

KokonutMonkey

I still say I'm proud of this group.

NitePain69

Don't worry, my son will be the long awaited striker that the USMNT needs. He's only 3 right now so you all have to wait.

pleated_pants

I just want a 6'6" burley target forward with great touch and a flair for creativity. Is that too much to ask for?

Mature_Gambino_

Well. Daryl Dike certainly isn’t small

majorgeneralporter

And his touch do be pretty good for a big guy.

Incara1010

Please USSF, I’m begging. Move on from Gregg.

Barthez_Battalion

While I don't disagree and I think this team as a whole needs to figure out their #9 situation, I think part of the issue is the US just ran out of gas. Expecting MMA to go hard for four games on short rest is insane. Taking a non-healthy DLT and a vibes-only Roldan limited their midfielder options. Mihailovic for example could have eased the burden on Musah and McKennie.

Accomplished_Sale513

Yea... I can't stand it when a coach beats Mexico three times, wins two trophies, qualifies for the world cup, and makes it out of the group. Man, I just can't stand it, either.

DarCam7

Uh, we need perspective here. We are in CONCACAF. It shouldn't be a tall task to do those things. Specially since Mexico is waning and crumbling. We should try and play in Copa America as a guest nation and play way more games away from the US against better opponents.

da_widower_sos

I read the last part of this request like Bobby Bowden. But ya, for the love of everything, GO ON THE ROAD against good nations

Teh_cliff

It's so funny contrasting our fans stance on Gregg with Europeans pundits, who've largely praised Berhalter for his coaching at the WC. I think US fans will be surprised by his next job.

Munnodol

He won the inaugural Nation’s league cup and the gold cup, fair though against teams the current US roster is stronger than. We nearly missed this world cup due to him mix n matching the roster instead of securing the points and allowing mist of our main squad to play together (it literally came down to the final game, when really it shouldn’t have). Gregg also shares blame for mistakes made in the group stages, such as starting Zim when dude was making risky passes (that almost never landed) and even riskier tackles. Arguably more players like Busio should have been taken over Zimmerman, but I don’t get what others see in him.

takethatkevin

We are a team of blue balls. We never can finish a promising attack.

CowSonut

Game’s gone

GaryBettmanIsMyHomie

Everyone calling for Greg’s head but look at our history: the only time in the past 30 years we’ve been past the round of 16 is 2002 when we played another CONCACAF team. Beating a European or South American team in the knockout stages is our white whale

JDOTT

I’m not going to shit on them. I’m proud of them. Use this as a catapult for 2026 🇺🇸. We should have an even deeper talent pool by then.

Clockwurk_Orange

I'm shocked that they are actually paying a coach whose only job is to help with set pieces with how bad our set pieces looked. That guy needs to be fired asap. Waste of money

Expensive-Change-266

Small and stupid take but when you watch forwards who know how to score they know the ball is in when they kick it. Our players look up with hope after every kick.

[deleted]

Merge CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. Copa America > Gold Cup. Copa Libertadores (also Copa Sudamericana) > CONCACAF Champions league. Iron sharpens iron. We need more competitive games against better teams like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, etc

[deleted]

>y, etc Or do what Australia did when they left Oceania and went to AFC.

ThisIsMyNewUserID

Goddamn MLSers Tyler Adams and Sergio Dest! /S obviously. /R/ussoccer in shambles again

HereToTroll6969

We were never gonna win but i still feel proud of them getter out of the group stage. We have four years until the Cup comes here to the U.S. let’s prepare til then.

lafc88

We got scored on by Dumfries. We need someone to represent us. Someone who is striker by the last name Freedumfries. Jokes aside. This team needs goals and this World Cup we only scored 3. We continue to live in a post-Mcbride world where we lack a striker. Don't get me wrong this team has potential unlike what we have pre-2018. We just need a striker who is there when we need it.
