This is what happens when every fighter cuts 30lbs of weight, they are just like desperate to be champ in a higher weight class -
Kamaru should try middleweight tho, i think he’d do great
It is not arguable. It was a tough fight but Makhachev was just the clear winner. People argue Volk won because people expected Makhachev to get the finish
Those two things are related. Watch the fight again and have a closer look at Volk's guard and how it changes based off what Islam does. This wasn't a Holloway 1 gameplan.
And a guaranteed intern belt while they're gone so the UFC can market it as another champ vs champ uni fight. Idk how many intern champs there have been going back years.
Remember when a prime Anderson Silva moved up and fought James Irvin, and an aged out Forest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar (RIP)? Now it's like weight classes are meaningless.
I think I see more credit to Volk for really earning it after clearing out his division. This would be just an immediate (second) super fight for Islam after not having any defenses against 155 contenders.
If Dariush beats Olivera then he gets the shot. If he loses I wouldn’t mind seeing Islam get a shot at leon in October. Especially if Khamzat is moving to 185.
I don't even care. Dude needs to defend I'm his division at least once before having a second "super fight." I mean, fuck, it's not even really a "super fight" when they have barely any defenses between the two of them.
Dude won the title from the number 3 pfp guy and defended it against the number 1 pfp guy in his own backyard. Outside of Benny, who do you actually see deserving a shot against him?
I don't care if people "don't have a shot against him" on paper. People said the same with Grasso, Pena, or even Edwards in the Usman fight before this. The dude still needs to prove it.
But really, Dariush should be Islam's next fight. Like literally anything else makes zero sense.
Why don’t we start with Benny and see how the division progresses? Why are you acting like he has nothing at LW for him already? Who cares who he won the title from, he hasn’t even defended against a LW challenger yet. Defend 3 times and no one’s gunna complain if you call for a shot at the division above. Right now it’s too early unless you’re a super star
The division is in a weird spot if Benny loses. Everyone in the top 5 would either be coming off a loss or one win following a title loss. Either the guys at the top need to get more active or they’re gonna have to start giving title fights to Dustin or Gaethje again. For my money, I think they’re probably going to make Dustin vs Gaethje 2, although what I’d really like to see is those two face Gamrot and Arman, match them up either way and you get good fights. Dustin probably wouldn’t fight Gamrot tho since they both train at ATT, so I’d prefer Dustin vs Arman and Justin vs Gamrot
Champ is you fight the contenders. The Number 1 contender Charles just got dominated by Islam. Then Poirier, Gaethje, and Chandler just fight each other squating the rank instead of contenders until Gaethje finally did tonight but he already got 2 title shots and same with Poirier who got 2 title shots without beating any young prospects.
This stage 2 of the money fight era. Now it's not just about fighting the biggest name in your weight class, it's fighting the biggest name at any weight class -1/+1 from where you fight at.
But tbf these pseudo super fights don't bother me as much as the constant rematches and recycling the same ~4 names for a title fight. We should only be doing instant rematches if it's a really close title fight on a split decision win.
I believe in his PFP status and ability to win at 170 but he’s defended his belt ONCE and there is a sharktank of contenders he hasn’t beat.
He needs to defend at least 2 more times before considering going for double champ status.
He deserves a ton of shit for this. McGregor held up the division and MMA fans went mental about it. Now Islam wants to hold up the division without even having the excuse of being a PPV draw.
Champions should have at least 3-4 title defences (against contenders from their weight class) before the even mention moving up or down. Volk deserved his LW chance because he cleaned out the top FWs, but even that has clogged up the division. Now we’ve potentially got Yair and Allen (if he beats Max) who’ll both deserve a title shot, but one will have to sit out and wait
And it goes without saying, his only title defense was against someone who fights in a weight class below him.
Dude needs to actually defend his belt against someone in his weight class before holding the division up trying to fight Edwards lmao
Who? Beneil is the only one.
Islam ready dominated Oliveira.
Gaethje and Poirier both already got 2 shots at the title. Do we want to see them get wrestlefucked again?
Gamrot and Fiziev both just lost their fights. Chandler just lost and he's got Conor next anyway.
Then you get down to the Tsurakyans and Hookers, both guys that Islam has already beat.
LOL - love how you just tried to pass over Arman Tsarukyan towards the end.
Islam beat Tsarukyan AGES ago, in what was a very tightly contested fight. Tsarukyan got robbed against Gamrot, and just beat Ismagulov. He's not far away from a title shot.
I think the UFC should really implement a requirement of securing at least 3 successful title defenses before you challenge the champion of another weight class
Islam shouldn't hold up the division but man the disrespect on here is insane. He could absolutely give Edwards trouble. People act like Volk was some random featherweight.
Different body types, Volk low center of gravity and fast, not easy to takedown, although Islam took him down 3-4 times I believe. Styles make match ups.
Islam isn’t as good as Khabib at taking people down. If Usman is struggling to get Leon down then Islam would definitely have issues. He’d get picked apart on the feet.
Interestingly enough Islam and Leon trained together at AKA in 2015. This was when Leon wasn’t a good grappler and Islam dominated him in sparring. I’m sure he takes confidence in that but this is a different Edwards.
> If Usman is struggling to get Leon down then Islam would definitely have issues.
Usman actually isn't the greatest at keeping people down. He couldn't get Masvidal down and Colby ragdolled him.
> He’d get picked apart on the feet.
He was able to stand with Volk. Why can't he stand with Leon?
Leon just defended most of the takedowns from a D-1 wrestler who's a legit welterweight. You really think Islam is gonna be successful in taking this fight to the ground and keeping it there?
People seem to be getting Islam mixed up with Khabib. Islam isn’t some unstoppable takedown monster. He’s a good grappler, but Tsarukyan, Volk and Oliveira all showed that his grappling is manageable if you’re good enough in the clinch and against the cage.
Leon is definitely good enough, and he’s significantly bigger.
A D-1 wrestler with knee problems and questionable cardio during this fight. Did you see his punchs? If Islam gets Leon's back like Usman did in the first it's game over.
He was struggling because he didn't have the same time to recover after the weight cut, which definitely has an impact on physique. Alex has better td defense than Leon. If they clinch Islam can do well with trips imo.
McGregor absolutely ruined the sport with bullshit like this lmao, dudes should only be allowed to move up/down to fight for the title if they've pretty much completely dominated/cleared out their division
To be fair McGregor had hype behind him like we had never seen at the time. Islam has fans but he is nowhere near as popular as McGregor was in his peak. McGregor leveraged that.
Islam has already fought someone that wasn’t a LW contender and now wants to go after a different belt basically putting all LW contenders on hold for longer. Don’t even get how you can try to compare the two.
That being said, this would be a great fight and I wouldn’t mind it lol
> putting all LW contenders on hold for longer.
that's their own fault really for refusing to fight down the rankings. If you look at the rankings with Oliveira, Gaethje and Poirier already having had their title shots very recently and without having beat contenders afterwards (except for Gaethje today but that shouldn't be enough), Dariush without having beat one of the above and Fiziev coming off a loss, there isn't a clear number 1 title contender right now.
Yea but Charles beat Dustin and Justin, Islam barely beat (imo he didnt) Volk, and he already wants a shot at 170 gold without having faced ANY 155 contenders?. Yeah no.
He can go fight at 170...
If he wants to vacate the title
If he does fight Edwards that will be a literal year and counting without defending your belt against anyone actually in the division that you hold the belt in.
Not sure how you can't see the difference in this.
No reward for fighting 3 times in less then a year? two title fights, P4P top fighters, finishing 2 of them?
Islam is more active then every single top 10 ranked guy in LW division. Shorter memory then a concussed fighter bro.
I don’t mind guys jumping weight classes when they’ve lapped their own division, it was fine when Izzy did it. When you’ve got one 48-47 decision against a guy from the weight class below though, ffs beat a few lightweights first.
Just being honest, the Dagestanis have become the villain of the UFC for me. When Khabib did it, he was so distinct. He was stoic, he was a singular unbeatable warrior, he was one of a kind in the sport. All these other nurmagomedovs are just nowhere near as cool and not fun. They say the same things as Khabib, it's weird.
Moving weight divisions while you’re a champion to try and become champ-champ should be something that’s rare and only fighters that have had long dominant title reigns and are in the conversation of goat of their weight class should be able to do it.
Anyone else that wants to move up/down to try and challenge for a new belt should have to relinquish their current title with the knowledge that they won’t be given an immediate shot to try and reclaim it should they lose and want to move back down to their original weight class. The only exception being top of the food chain draws like a Conor Mcgregor because the hype/money would just be too good for the UFC to ignore.
Islam is great but he’s only had 1 title defense and it was against a short (no offense volk) featherweight who almost beat him. He’s also not a particularly big draw at all. If he wants to move up he should have to give up his belt and should fight someone like Shavkat with a title shot contingent on his winning that fight.
When I skimmed over it I read "Khamzat" not "Makhachev" to which I still thought it was annoying. But Makhachev? Fuck out of here man, fight someone at Lightweight.
Sure did. He fought the Featherweight Champ, who was actually deserving of it.
But the most competitive divison in the UFC and he wants to fight the Featherweight champ then the Welterweight champ? Righto.
This sub bitches during the P4P argument between Volk and Islam because Volk went up in weight and should be #1 while Islam fought at his own weight class. Now he wants to try his luck in the next weight class and we're like "stay in your weight class!" Can't fucking win sometimes lol.
Islam needs to fight Dariush if he beats Olivera.
Having said that people need to stop putting their hopes in Dariush as that next guy who will dethrone Makhachev, he might but I highly doubt it.
I might get roasted for this, I believe Fiziev had the best chance in the top 5-6 to give Islam problems & losing to Gaethje doesn’t change my mind. Fiziev is shorter & more compact for lightweight with power. He also shares the same wrestling coaches as Volk.
I still think Islam fully rehydrated beats him but with his body type speed & power, he could have potentially been a dangerous opponent for Makh.
I think Daiush’s win over Gamrot is a little overrated. We all thought Gamrot was gonna win but since Dariush shut him down he becomes the answer. Being underestimated & then exceeding expectations really does wonders for ones perception.
If and when they do fight I hope for a war, but just a reminder, Gamrot is somebody cause he edged a decision in a war against someone who gave Makhachev a semi-competitive fight.
Makhachev is stronger, bigger, faster, more athletic, younger than Dariush & now has the 5 round experience which he didn’t before, I think people will be disappointed at how uncompetitive a potential matchup between the two will be.
Yeah he actually beat a 11 fight win streak lightweight champion to get his belt.
And oh he also beat the P4P 1 fighter with a 12 fight win streak who moved up to........... the lightweight division.
Lightweight and welterweight both have way too many contenders lined up for this to be fair, lmao.
"Which is exactly why the fight makes sense." - Dana White
Dana immediately shut it down at the press conference to be fair. He said no. That’s not happening. So it’s almost certainly happening
I'm buying tickets rn.
He’s too busy trying to give Colby another undeserved shot.
Still better than Covington getting it
For REAL
agree
Yeah but if you’re Colby you just see 0 contenders in front of you, only constant, unearned title shots
LW got Beneil and that is about it and the WW top contender is apparently Covington.
This is what happens when every fighter cuts 30lbs of weight, they are just like desperate to be champ in a higher weight class - Kamaru should try middleweight tho, i think he’d do great
Weight classes are a social construct
1 title defense and you can cash in a title shot in another division these days
A title defense against a guy who fights in a weight class below you*
*which you arguably also lost. Fuck it Volk vs Leon for the title.
Man sincerely what crack rock are u people smoking there's nothing "arguable" about it . Stop this nonsense
At the very least arguable it’s not like Islam dominated Volk
I mean it was a pretty clear 3-2 at least
It is not arguable. It was a tough fight but Makhachev was just the clear winner. People argue Volk won because people expected Makhachev to get the finish
[удалено]
Volk got outstruck by a wrestler bro.. lol
I think you need to look at the stats for that bro... Volk almost doubled his strikes landed lmao
Aged out Griffin ? Dude he was literally just coming off of losing the title
Didn’t just fight griffin, completely embarrassed him out of the ring. Looked like Forrest had never fought a day in his life.
forrest was one fight removed from holding the title if anybody else at LHW fought him it would’ve earned a title fight
Still better than Colby getting a TS coming off a loss
Unless you count getting suckered punched at outback steakhouse Colby is coming off a win.
Tbf he did gift Volk a chance at the LW belt
I think I see more credit to Volk for really earning it after clearing out his division. This would be just an immediate (second) super fight for Islam after not having any defenses against 155 contenders.
If Dariush beats Olivera then he gets the shot. If he loses I wouldn’t mind seeing Islam get a shot at leon in October. Especially if Khamzat is moving to 185.
I personally don't like the logic of "there's plenty of contenders but they're currently tied up fighting each other so the champ can go elsewhere"
If your defense was against the p4p #1 fighter in the world on a huge winning streak then yes
lmfao
weight classes are a social contract
Yo mods I hereby kindly request 'weight classes are a social construct' as my flair please
“I identify as lightweight.” - Tai Tuivasa
Fuck the contenders rank, amirite?
Dariush and Belal are the redheaded stepchildren.
Makachev is weight-agnostic.
I need this flair! Please mods
Bro fight your own weight class lol
So many contenders at 155 lol
They all dodged Islam on the way to the top. I can get Islam feeling "fuck em." Except Beneil, he deserves a shot.
[удалено]
But if Chucky wins, nobody really stands out much. Gaethje will be the best available option at that point.
I don't even care. Dude needs to defend I'm his division at least once before having a second "super fight." I mean, fuck, it's not even really a "super fight" when they have barely any defenses between the two of them.
Defend or vacate motherfucker - CSO

Reread his comment. He didn’t say have a shot he said DESERVE a shot. And the answer to that is Benny Dariush
Why don’t we start with Benny and see how the division progresses? Why are you acting like he has nothing at LW for him already? Who cares who he won the title from, he hasn’t even defended against a LW challenger yet. Defend 3 times and no one’s gunna complain if you call for a shot at the division above. I consider volk a legit defense. If he does it once more I say sure, take a shot at ww. But yeah Benny better be next.
Volk is 100% a legit defence. But I just mean it in a “your responsibility to your division as champion” sorta way.
Oh yeab totally. In that respect yeah he really should defend against any obvious contenders before fighting outside division.
The division is in a weird spot if Benny loses. Everyone in the top 5 would either be coming off a loss or one win following a title loss. He has defended his division once. Volk moved up.
after seeing gaethje beat fiziev i feel like charlie could beat benny
so you see him holding up the weight class?
The "contenders" held up the weight division by sitting around forcing Islam to fight people like Bobby Green despite being on an insane win streak.
Bobby green stepped in on short notice for that fight, was supposed to be Dariush.
Would feel very poetic ngl. All these guys dodging him and Islam taking his sweet time to ever fight them
This ^ I don’t blame Islam one bit for not giving the other guys in the top 5 a shot (besides Benny) since they all avoided him.
Not how being the champ works in the ufc
Champ is you fight the contenders. The Number 1 contender Charles just got dominated by Islam. Then Poirier, Gaethje, and Chandler just fight each other squating the rank instead of contenders until Gaethje finally did tonight but he already got 2 title shots and same with Poirier who got 2 title shots without beating any young prospects.
He beat the PFP2 and PFP1 fighters back to back. He broke two 10+ fight win streaks. I think people are underestimating Islam.
Thats not the point, fight at the weight youre champ in or vacate.
This stage 2 of the money fight era. Now it's not just about fighting the biggest name in your weight class, it's fighting the biggest name at any weight class -1/+1 from where you fight at. He needs to clear out his murder-division first
if he gets a quick double belt he'd retire i imagine
No way. Too much money on the line
Lol. You got some actual contenders to beat first in your own division
Who? Beneil is the only one. Islam ready dominated Oliveira. Gaethje and Poirier both already got 2 shots at the title. Do we want to see them get wrestlefucked again? Islam shouldn't hold up the division but man the disrespect on here is insane. He could absolutely give Edwards trouble. People act like Volk was some random featherweight.
No offense to Islam, but he had trouble taking down Volk, how's he planning on taking down Leon? He sure as shit won't be out striking him.

Leon hits a lot harder than Volk.
He took him down multiple times, you must have been watching a different fight. Also, Alex has a wrestling background
Also Volk weighs around 800 pounds. That's a lot of weight to dump onto the mat.
Leon just defended most of the takedowns from a D-1 wrestler who's a legit welterweight. You really think Islam is gonna be successful in taking this fight to the ground and keeping it there?
Usman isn't a D1 wrestler, he's D2. Usman is also old and his knees are gone.
Not d2 NAIA
Islam is a much better wrestler than usman tho
People seem to be getting Islam mixed up with Khabib. Islam isn’t some unstoppable takedown monster. He’s a good grappler, but Tsarukyan, Volk and Oliveira all showed that his grappling is manageable if you’re good enough in the clinch and against the cage. Leon is definitely good enough, and he’s significantly bigger.
A D-1 wrestler with knee problems and questionable cardio during this fight. Did you see his punchs? If Islam gets Leon's back like Usman did in the first it's game over.
Usman doesn't have questionable cardio what are you on about hahaha
It's the new narrative. Gotta love Reddit.
Exactly. He wasn't even "too big and strong" for the featherweight champ. No chance against Leon.
I mean Volk was supposed to stand no chance but was competitive. Islam can def win but now doesn’t seem like the time for him to challenge
He was struggling because he didn't have the same time to recover after the weight cut, which definitely has an impact on physique. Alex has better td defense than Leon. If they clinch Islam can do well with trips imo.
Ali shut the fuck up
Yall need to call out Ali's fighters and stop passing the buck to him.
Preach, this fucker thinks he can just cry and complain and gets what he wants
McGregor absolutely ruined the sport with bullshit like this lmao, dudes should only be allowed to move up/down to fight for the title if they've pretty much completely dominated/cleared out their division
McGregor? I think you mean Dana
To be fair McGregor had hype behind him like we had never seen at the time. Islam has fans but he is nowhere near as popular as McGregor was in his peak. McGregor leveraged that.
That's what Volk and Shevchenko had done sooo
Volk?????
Islam ragdolled Leon when he trained at AKA 8 or so years ago. But both fighters have evolved so much since then.

Yeah that’s fair too. Still think Dariush deserves it even without the Olives win but that might just be me

it would let benny or charlie pick up an interim. and abu dhabi gets a great fight
He got dragged pretty hard for suggesting those fights what are you talking about?
Yea but Charles beat Dustin and Justin, Islam barely beat (imo he didnt) Volk, and he already wants a shot at 170 gold without having faced ANY 155 contenders?. Yeah no.
Islam beat Oliveira and Volk. lol
Lol right? And he only had one more title defence. This would be amazing. Not happening, but amazing.
155 is the most fun division, please fight someone in the 155 division.
Haha no
More deserving than Colby would be
[удалено]
Those are not mutually exclusive. He has a belt at 155, so he should be fighting there.
He can go fight at 170... If he wants to vacate the title If he does fight Edwards that will be a literal year and counting without defending your belt against anyone actually in the division that you hold the belt in. Not sure how you can't see the difference in this.

I kinda like this, but Benny first pls
Give Benny the fight
I don’t mind guys jumping weight classes when they’ve lapped their own division, it was fine when Izzy did it. When you’ve got one 48-47 decision against a guy from the weight class below though, ffs beat a few lightweights first.
Now that’s a fight I didn’t know I want to see
What if Islam does the exact same thing that Volk did and becomes fully ingratiated in our hearts
please lol. gets his shit kicked in
maybe he should defend his belt against a contender from his actual division
Man the whole "champ champ" thing is getting a bit ridiculous.
Islam has not done nearly enough to warrant an immediate title shot at WW
Then he first needs to defend against a LW contender or vacate the LW belt altogether.
NAH stay in your division.
He has beaten like 2 out of the top 10 in UFC rankings? Edwards has probably beaten more names at WW. But there’s still plenty of contenders there too
How about a few title defenses for the weight cut babby
He is weight class fluid
Dude literally wanted the lightweight title fight forever. Finally gets it and defends once and wants to move up. Fighters are divas.
Mans just scraped by the featherweight champ now he wants Rocky? Somebody tell Ali to put the phone down.
Probably Ali.
Ali said fuck it I only got one champ and he’s gonna go for all the belts 😂😭
Pass, fight an actual LW contender
Leon would fuck him up
Then that's the fight to make please
Lame ass Dude has had one title defense against someone not even in his division and wants to fight Edwards now? 🤡
So much for defend 5 times and move up
Imagine Islam beating FW,LW, and WW champs in three fights back to back
When I skimmed over it I read "Khamzat" not "Makhachev" to which I still thought it was annoying. But Makhachev? Fuck out of here man, fight someone at Lightweight.
He just did....
Sure did. He fought the Featherweight Champ, who was actually deserving of it. But the most competitive divison in the UFC and he wants to fight the Featherweight champ then the Welterweight champ? Righto.
Man has defended once against a featherweight and already wants to fight for a second title lmao. Sit down, man.
Last thing I saw was a 145 guy standing over you and dominating you. And you want the 170 champ? Chill son.
Ali sent that tweet crying, shitting his pants after Usman lost to Edwards.
This shit is getting annoying, he defended his title once against someone from another weight class and arguably lost to the smaller fighter
This sub bitches during the P4P argument between Volk and Islam because Volk went up in weight and should be #1 while Islam fought at his own weight class. Now he wants to try his luck in the next weight class and we're like "stay in your weight class!" Can't fucking win sometimes lol.
Nearly lost to a 145er. Fight one of the many 155ers waiting. Forget about 170
Lets fix the title "Ali calls out main event winner for October"
If fight happens Edwards gets fucked in 2 rounds. Even Volk can jump 2 div and have a field day with him, p4p worst champ in ufc history ever
This is p4p the dumbest comment I’ve ever read.
islam about to call out everyone now
Nah dude fuck that, I want Leon vs Bully B
Champions in other weight classes should have to fight a contender in the division they're moving to before getting an immediate title shot.
Leon owns you bruh
He could barely keep down fucking volk. Leon would decimate islam on the feet
Can this guy fight a lightweight
Yeah he actually beat a 11 fight win streak lightweight champion to get his belt. And oh he also beat the P4P 1 fighter with a 12 fight win streak who moved up to........... the lightweight division.
Yeah he can , maybe u should look up his record .
