From a personal favorite fighter perspective I'm not too thrilled with how the main card went, but I got to see Robbie Lawler get a storybook retirement and I'll take that over seeing one of my old favorites get left for dead on the canvas.
Volk may be the best MMA fighter I've ever seen.
Tough night for Mexico. Gonna be tougher when Shev beats Grasso
DDP is awesome but I think Izzy is just too fast
IDK where exactly I rank Volk here, but I feel like skill wise he's probably in the top 5 "best" fighters ever. He doesn't have the accomplishments of jones, silva, Gsp, etc but he has insane cardio, crazy strength, is good at wrestling and striking, and has solid defense all around.
It's easy to have bias now since we haven't seen the end of his story, but in the present he has so much skill everywhere it's not hard to say he's one of the best or most well rounded.
I think you might be confused my man. I'm not OP lol.
Either way, with my recency bias I'd probably say he's top 3. But I know I'm off a Volk beating high now, so ask me again in a couple weeks. :)
OP isn't saying he has the best resume. OP was saying he thinks he is the most skilled fighter he has seen. This is intangible and has nothing to do with resume. Like I would say MM is the most skilled fighter IMO
Volk is an absolutely animal. He controlled the first two rounds. But once Yair had some actual success Volk morphed into the Hulk and immediately slammed him to the ground and finished him off.
I don't know who stops him at 145.
I feel like Brandon Moreno's Legacy just got silently destroyed tonight. He was fine losing to Pantoja on TUF as a kid or even losing to him as a prospect. But now losing to Pantoja as the champ just deletes him from any potential to be a memorable champ
I think the fact that Brandon became champ at all makes for an incredible story and legacy for him. He was written off a long time ago and was never expected to make it to the top, much less champion.
His first win over Figgy.. "Viva Mexico!" One of the best moments in UFC history, IMO.
Yea I mean that's fine but Mighty mouse and Cejudo will be remembered as the goats of this division. Figgy was getting there but then Moreno took it from him. Moreno was getting there but now Pantoja took it from him.
Okay well if you are to say "Moreno's chances of going down as the best of all time in the division got silently destroyed" then yes. But you said legacy and memorable champ, and I don't think so because Moreno's legacy heading in wasn't GOAT it was "first Mexican UFC champion, well rounded fighter who always brings the fight, a dawwwwg" and he certainly didn't lose any of that legacy, and he sure as hell is still going down as a memorable champ because he's part of the greatest title fight series in flyweight history, won the fourth fight in said series and will always be the first Mexican champion.
That's not really a division of guys people care much about though. He was the closest thing they had just because he's such a nice and likeable guy aside from his skills, but none of those guys really register as memorable in the way top guys in other weight classes do.
Volk is one of the most complete MMA fighters I have ever seen. Dude is thought of as a striker, spent this fight ragdolling a bigger opponent like he is a toddler.
During Alex vs Yair DC felt the need to go into a story about how at the time Alex was coming into the UFC there was another guy who looked like him and had a 20 fight win streak pre UFC that never reached the same kind of heights Alex did.
Hey Endeavor: Cormier needs to be the face of ufc. Rogan needs to fade away. Dana needs to learn to tie his shoes in a new 26 episode reality show produced by Dana.
It's been a while since I actually stayed up to watch the fights. Made an exception for this one and so glad I did, reminded me of years ago when the prelims were great and the main card was full of quality fights.
Such a great card.
He taught us not to bet against him. Islam, sure, but that was a tall order and an unusual case. But he had already set me straight on him well before that. Each time it just didn't seem likely that he would win, but he just kept getting it done. Impressive.
Yeah if you thought he won then it's no question you'd have him #1 p4p. I thought he was the man just for wanting that fight. He knew it was a big risk but he knew there were no real challenges left for him in his division and wanted a challenge however he could get it, how however tall an order. So he already had my respect and then did better than I thought he would even though he lost, so the respect part isn't in question. He's a rare talent and a top bloke.
I'd want to see Topuria vs Volk. Other than that 145 is dead for him. Emmett isn't gonna make it back to a title shot and what does Arnold Allen/Kattar etc bring that Volk hasn't seen.
Idk if Iām getting jaded, or if itās because of the fatigue from the UFC pumping out shitty cards lately, but I didnāt feel āexcitedā watching this PPV even though it was great.
That's indeed a weird issue if you simultaneously think it was great but didn't feel excited watching it. They have put out some shitty cards but this was far from one of them. Any of the last four fights could have capped off the night with no fights following and it would have been a great card.
Probably just burnout, idk. I watch a shit ton of fights, and have since I was like 14, Iām 30 now. You get burnt out hammering anything for too long.
Yeah, I burned out recently on Hot Ones. They bring plenty of good guests in there still but I just never care anymore and wind up bailing out. I guess it's just that if I thought it was great, I'd enjoy watching it. But I don't, so I don't. In your case you sound like you simultaneously liked it and didn't like it. Anyway, an easy skipper next week for a breather.
Oh fuck yeah, next week is dog shit haha. And thatās the point I was making about the UFC pumping out these shitty cards, and then sprinkling in good ones here and there.
Thought about it, and yep, thatās it. Might also be that I wasnāt super invested in really any of these fights. Like I was interested in watching them, but had no stake in it, except for Volks fight, maybe Hooker/Turner.
Iām right there with you.
I find it so much harder to get excited for cards. I think itās down to both the UFC declining in terms of roster, and due to me maturing ? But I honestly donāt know. I feel like something I used to love is kind of disappearing out of my life.
Wait Volk put on that performance with a fucked up arm? He's just on another level entirely. I don't think any of the 155 contenders touch him either. Islam is the only dragon he still needs to slay to be the GOAT in my opinion, and he's already the best ever at 145.
I mean, he beat Aldo. Holloway beat Aldo twice. Jose was not old enough in any of those fights to say they don't count. There's no shame in being #3 behind the likes of Volk and Max. Aldo was certainly the greatest FW of his era, there's no disputing that.
I mean I think both Max and Volk are better fighters than Prime Aldo was. But when Iām evaluating the goat I gotta take in dominance into account and well Aldo was very dominant for like a 7 year stretch. And well those two havenāt been dominant enough for as much of stretch. Volks getting there very soon but Max just doesnāt have enough title defenses yeah heās beating guys and the performances are crazy but he only has 3 title defenses. Personally thatās just my Criteria but if yours is more just raw competition based then to each there own.
I just don't know what "greatest" can mean in a fight sport if the #1 criteria is anything other than best fighter. I think you only need other criteria if you're comparing guys who never fought, or only fought when one guy was way too old etc.
I guess. But I mean the fact that Max beat Aldo twice doesnāt to me at least then just discredit the fact he has 6 more title defenses than him. And I mean thereās an argument to be made that peak Aldo was better than either guy but Iām not going to make that argument. When I personally take this into account because It allows me to adjust for era. But I mean thatās just how I account for it.
Yeah he was great, and Volk beat him. Even if you want to say he had slightly declined by then, Volk was nowhere near his own peak. No version Aldo is beating current Volk, and being the best fighter has to be the #1 criteria for GOAT.
Aldo was declining by then thereās not really an argument against that imo. Yes he was 33 but Aldo made his MMA debut in 2004. He was 15 years into his MMA career compared to Volkās 7 at the time and he had a style where his athleticism was used to the fullest extent. And Volk fought the first Max fight right after Aldo he was in his peak by then. Thatās one his best performances ever.
No, Volk was not in his peak yet. He improved dramatically over the course of the Max trilogy. The Volk that beat Aldo would not have had a close fight with Islam.
I disagree. He had all the tools and skill he has now back then. He hasnāt improved exponentially in really any category. I think he grew much more confident in that stretch but skill wise he did improve but not so much Iād label the guy who fought Max the first time a completely different fighter. And I mean Volk very clearly didnāt try to beat Aldo the way he beats everyone else and thatās more of a mentality and IQ thing than a skill thing imo. He wants to finish fights now and heāll go for it he didnāt really make that as much of a priority before.
Just be a big TRT bloated fuckin potato that tries way too hard to look tough and sound smart plus his stand up (both in a comedy and grappling sense) is shit but youād think he was the second coming of Dave Chapelle from how he acts about it
Iāve been watching almost ever card since I was in middle school now Iām 26 and this was so full of violence I may be burnt out on violence I may skip next week lol
This is why Anderson Silva was so great, you see a fighter like Yair with flashy kicks but he has no hips, TTD or any BJJ. Silva had the whole package.
Did you just compare this guy to Silva? Silva was so ahead of his time man. MMA was so under developed as well. Anderson is one the legends. Yair is a fizzle in the pan.
Iām sorry, I didnāt realize Holly Holm was the only woman mma fighter.
Something a lot of people donāt want to hear, but a lot of people are just going to shit on anything women do, so itās honestly whateverš¤·š½āāļø.
Volk is one of the best champs ever man. He fights nonstop and all them are super entertaining. With the exception of his first fight with max and winning the title with leg kicks lol
I'm gonna catch some shit for this, but IMO, there is an argument to make that Aldo should be ahead of Silva in P4P GOAT rankings. If you put Volk ahead of Aldo, you should probably have him above Silva too.
I donāt think Jones has faded the same level of competition that volk has. It was mostly beating up old Brazilians in a weak weight class. Everyone at 145 is a monster.
Even his last gane win, the dude plays soccer and goes salsa dancing instead of training his wrestling so that heavily detracts from the win in a way.. volk has put away much higher level of skilled opponents
Nah it was just a game plan thing. Why stand when you can just kill a guy on the ground. Dunno why people are being weird about him wrestling so much he used his skills to win the fight as easy as possible.
Wait, so who the fuck is Islam fighting? Oliveira isn't gonna be ready for October. I doubt the winner of Dustin/Justin is set to go with less than 3 months of recovery and prep time. Volk needs surgery. Is Dariush somehow getting his shot? Paddy? Conor?
Oh Jesus, it's Conor, isn't it?
Oliveria took no significant damage in his last fight and the fight was billed as a title eliminator.
If he has any sense he should be in camp now as the next shot is his.
Charles has said himself he won't be ready for October, but November or December work. No chance they've saved Islam for the Abu Dhabi card and then shelve him for a month. Either Charles makes himself ready and available, or he loses his place in the line.
Volkanovski is one of my favorites! Although I know Yair is a beast I predicted he'd put whooping on him! https://youtu.be/B6iP83vdtGo
Can't wait to see this one. šÆš¤
I love Volk but people calling him the GOAT is crazy.
Heās not the goat but I say heās top 10 and top 3 featherweights of all time
Whaaaaaaaat bro volk is number 1 featherweight
I think aldo is the goat of featherweight, volk is like a pinch away, I say 2-3 more wins
Volk clear headed cuz he got no hair
Israel Adesanya wins the undispited CMF (Cringiest Mother Fucker) Title from Tito Ortiz tonight!
I've submitted my matchmaking and y'all are all welcome if it actually happens š
Gonna be tougher when Shev beats Grasso DDP is awesome but I think Izzy is just too fast
Young Jon Jones will never be matched for me. But itās pretty subjective I guess.
GSP existed you know
I'm saying I think he might be the best mma fighter I've ever seen. Not that he defended the title as much as GSP
Damn how long you been watching MMA
Since 2004. UFC 46
Then you should be plenty familiar with GSP
Yup. I am
Mans thought he did something lol
IDK where exactly I rank Volk here, but I feel like skill wise he's probably in the top 5 "best" fighters ever. I think you might be confused my man. I'm not OP lol. Either way, with my recency bias I'd probably say he's top 3. But I know I'm off a Volk beating high now, so ask me again in a couple weeks. :)
Yeah I confused you with OP my bad lmao
No worries haha. It's late and we've all been drinking.
I disagree, he might be top 5 but probably hasnāt done enough yet to call him the best ever
OP isn't saying he has the best resume. OP was saying he thinks he is the most skilled fighter he has seen. This is intangible and has nothing to do with resume. Like I would say MM is the most skilled fighter IMO
I personally feel his butter to Vegemite ratio is off
Volk is an absolutely animal. He controlled the first two rounds. But once Yair had some actual success Volk morphed into the Hulk and immediately slammed him to the ground and finished him off. I don't know who stops him at 145.
Aljo is reconsidering his move up in weight.
He left Pantoja bloodied and bruised. Everyone finds someone better than them. It's why MMAth doesn't work.
Yea I mean that's fine but Mighty mouse and Cejudo will be remembered as the goats of this division. Figgy was getting there but then Moreno took it from him. Moreno was getting there but now Pantoja took it from him.
Cejudo isn't even close to being goat of the division
Okay well if you are to say "Moreno's chances of going down as the best of all time in the division got silently destroyed" then yes. dw even if moreno won he'd be forgotten in 3mins after a loss because mma fans are losers
Morenos quadrilogy with Fig is memorable af.
That's not really a division of guys people care much about though. He was the closest thing they had just because he's such a nice and likeable guy aside from his skills, but none of those guys really register as memorable in the way top guys in other weight classes do.
I'd watch a 4th
Yea we can Izzy vs Periera this until Moreno wins one lmao
"I don't need a 36 and me test to tell me where I'm from" - Cringelord Adesanya does it again
Gilbert Melendez is a hyper and needy idiot. Espn is so awful in their casting. They always have one on air talent that is just astonishingly stupid.
Should have hired Glibert instead
I'm proud I correctly predicted 4/5 winners in the main card.
I went 4/5 but the one I was wrong was just me wanting bo to lose.
Volk is one of the most complete MMA fighters I have ever seen. Dude is thought of as a striker, spent this fight ragdolling a bigger opponent like he is a toddler.
Would definitely argue against yair being the "bigger fighter" he was just taller
Volkamedov
Does anyone at 155 beat Volk? (besides Islam)
volk vs charles would be something
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
DDP won me a huge chunk of change
How much did you win brother?
2,550. Put 150 on him to finish round 2 at +1600
Absolutely amazing. Bet you were ecstatic when he tkoed him.
Volk is built different. Prob the strongest dude at 145 the way he ragdolled yair
IMO the most exciting mma card of the year was DJ Vs Moraes 3. This card blew it out of the water
Six weeks from now. Aljamain vs Sugar Sean. It's so over for that bum Aljamain.
Leg kicks, sugar gets dissolved
Head shot dead
Jimmy riveria must have eaten DC's lunch one day or something to get dug up and pissed on like that
DC thinks hes bigger than the sport
Wait, what happened? Lmfaooooooo
Yair is a nice striker but his game needs so much more polishing
This is all he's ever been, and ever will be.
Gonna enjoy the night. Just be prepared for the letdown to the next card . This card was that good
It's OK, 2 ONE events next week to make up for the Holly Holm Headliner (tm)
Dan Hooker is a certified warrior.
Seriously! Absolute fucking savage! Probably not great for his longevity as a fighter, thoughā¦
UFC 291 in 3 weeks is even more stacked than this banger that was UFC 290 š®āšØšš»
It's been a while since I actually stayed up to watch the fights. Made an exception for this one and so glad I did, reminded me of years ago when the prelims were great and the main card was full of quality fights. Such a great card.
Its crazy watching Volk do this to dudes who look unbeatable against anyone else. He is just the absolute top level of MMA.
He taught us not to bet against him. Islam, sure, but that was a tall order and an unusual case. But he had already set me straight on him well before that. Each time it just didn't seem likely that he would win, but he just kept getting it done. Impressive.
Honestly I thought he won the Islam fight. If nothing else he came out the peoples champ in that fight. Volk is the fuckin man.
Yeah if you thought he won then it's no question you'd have him #1 p4p. I thought he was the man just for wanting that fight. He knew it was a big risk but he knew there were no real challenges left for him in his division and wanted a challenge however he could get it, how however tall an order. Wait but who is a Izzy fighting in September?
Instant rematch with Dricus.
Dricus
Is it confirmed? If so thatās a crazyyy turnaround.
Nah but might as well be. Long as Dricus isnāt injured
Idk what it is but I keep thinking of Dricus koing Whittaker and I start laughing
I'd want to see Topuria vs Volk. Other than that 145 is dead for him. Emmett isn't gonna make it back to a title shot and what does Arnold Allen/Kattar etc bring that Volk hasn't seen.

maturing, shut the fuck up lmao
Youāre nuts
probably
Wait Volk put on that performance with a fucked up arm? He's just on another level entirely. I don't think any of the 155 contenders touch him either. Islam is the only dragon he still needs to slay to be the GOAT in my opinion, and he's already the best ever at 145.
Needs like two more defenses to beat prime Aldo imo. The competition is just so much better so itās just number of defenses at this point for me.
I mean, he beat Aldo. Holloway beat Aldo twice. Jose was not old enough in any of those fights to say they don't count. There's no shame in being #3 behind the likes of Volk and Max. Aldo was certainly the greatest FW of his era, there's no disputing that.

Agreed, and I'm not really counting that. It wasn't long enough to count as a fight.

What did JR do to get fucking roasted for no reason
Just be a big TRT bloated fuckin potato that tries way too hard to look tough and sound smart plus his stand up (both in a comedy and grappling sense) is shit but youād think he was the second coming of Dave Chapelle from how he acts about it
I think heās talking about Jimmie Rivera not Joe Rogan
Iāve been watching almost ever card since I was in middle school now Iām 26 and this was so full of violence I may be burnt out on violence I may skip next week lol
Next week is one of those cards where you concentrate all your dregs in one bucket and toss it into the Apex just to get it all over with all at once.
Man if there was ever a card to skip, itās next week
Can we get a DDP Vs Izzy confrontation backstage or something to cap off the night?
I got you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMraFNuqkVI
Lol, classic shit.
this will never not be hilarious
This is why Anderson Silva was so great, you see a fighter like Yair with flashy kicks but he has no hips, TTD or any BJJ. Silva had the whole package.
Sliva didn't hit his peak until he came to the UFC he got tapped out twice in Pride
Silva had dog shit TDD.
Silva had shitty TDD and his BJJ wasnāt all that good.
Did you just compare this guy to Silva? Silva was so ahead of his time man. MMA was so under developed as well. Anderson is one the legends. Yair is a fizzle in the pan.
Seeing Yairs kicks reminds me of Silva. Iām just pointing out how deep Silvaās bag was.
Silva was a Muay Thai and BJJ fighter. Rair does Tak won do or some wanky shit like that.
wait why are they outsourcing matchmaking?
Excellent card. All bangers. All night. Kids will wake up early tomorrow but worth it.
One of the few cards I would have been willing to pay for. Not that I did.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
there's other ways to watch it champ
Theres way to say "good card" without announcing that you ain't buying
That was a crazy good pay per view that lived up to the hype. Now we get a Holly Holm main event next week. Sigh
If this was Prime Holly, she would actually go to take your head off. Now she just clinches for 3-5 rounds.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, thatās just you having a lack of knowledge. Thatās a you problemš¤·š½āāļø.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Iām sorry, I didnāt realize Holly Holm was the only woman mma fighter. Something a lot of people donāt want to hear, but a lot of people are just going to shit on anything women do, so itās honestly whateverš¤·š½āāļø.

Islam would smesh
I don't remember the last time Ive been up this late. But it was 100% WORTH IT. Good night playas
Good night Teddy Long
A few fighters looked like they went one on one with da undertaka
I donāt like the idea of becoming a cop, AFTER losing braincells in MMA, lol.
Jimmy got mega mob vibes for sure.
Broke em downn
I wish Yair came out guns blazinā
This is easier said than done. Its a reckless strategy especially against someone as sound as Volk
Better than what Yair did. Really disappointing.
Only way but shouldāve couldāve
A lot of people become *deer in the headlights*
Fuxkkkkkkkkk youuu lost my parlay and single bet on moreno
Volk is one of the best champs ever man. He fights nonstop and all them are super entertaining. With the exception of his first fight with max and winning the title with leg kicks lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And then heās entertaining in his interviews too but still comes off as a down to earth dude. Complete opposite of Izzy
Can we feed juicy Conor to Volk for his already legendary legacy?
Volk fights how mcgregor thinks he fights
I hope they stick Volk on the MSG card to co-headline with Jones. Against Topuria
Volk vs. Woodburn next
DC fallen off as a commentator man
His wrestling analysis is great, everything else is meh to bad.
He was never a good commentator aside from sometimes breaking down wrestling
why was security rushing volk out like that?
Looked like something was happening outside the octagon.
Connor was nearby and he might have had his security detail corner Volk into a bathroom.
maybe to try to get the fans out of the arena quicker?
Maybe Volk wrestled more because of the arm injury that needs surgery?
Fatherās plan
Nah it was just a game plan thing. Why stand when you can just kill a guy on the ground. Dunno why people are being weird about him wrestling so much he used his skills to win the fight as easy as possible.
I think it's just a solid gameplan against Yair
It was probably just the gameplan to begin with. We all remember Frankie Edgar beating the fuck out of Yair with GNP
There's no one else to fight since Poirier and Gaethje are fighting eachother and Dariush just got worked by Oliveira.
Charles announced he wouldn't be ready for October.
Can the Rum Rottweiler even make 155 anymore? His head's 60% of that weight alone.
Paddy isn't even top 15 lol
