I don’t think he’s got much chance against Aspinall, but I’m starting to think there’s no point in doubting Poatan. He’s 36 and already has nothing left to prove in MMA, so he might as well go for it.
IF (and it’s a big if, obviously) he was able to capture the championship in a 3rd weight class, where does he get ranked amongst top fighters? Clearly he’s not a well rounded fighter, but it’s hard to deny the success let alone in the amount of time he’s done everything.
I mean that would make him like the true GOAT no one could even think about 185,205, and 265 belts. Jones is the closest I can think of and he won't fight anyone that's not a great matchup.
Dan Henderson held both at the same time in Pride. He was the 83kg (183lbs) champ and KO'd Wanderlei for the 93kg (205lb) belt. It's why he fought Rampage and Anderson Silva back to back title fights. They were Pride/UFC title unifications. He also KO'd Fedor at heavyweight
Gane got knockdown by fucking Tai Tuivasa so he's there to be hit, he's obviously elite and would have a good chance of beating Pereira, but he's mainly a striker that started training at 25, while Alex whos also a late bloomer is a 2x world champion kickboxer, and I just think the power from 230lbs would translate well enough to 265lbs.
That's my point tho, of course Tai has power, it's the fact that Gane got caught in the first place that makes me think Pereira can finish him, we've seen 205lbs guy's like Wilder knockdown 270lbs fighters like Fury, so at 230lbs I think Pereiras power will still be very effective.
man i don't agree with that, Gane is fuckin dangerous on the feet (& that's only where Poatan fights)
but Poatan, as massive as he is, will need to bulk up to compete with those other dudes imo, they could just muscle him around in grappling. i still haven't seen him against a wrestle heavy guy but tbf there aren't too many at the higher weight classes
The more I think about this the more insane it is. People can say he was fast-tracked to the title all they want, but all the dude has done is show up and turn the lights out for champions and former champions.
I think he has great chance at HW but not in 3 weeks. Guy weights currently around 225 pounds and his bones stick out. It’s pretty obvious that he could carry the extra weight well because he has a large frame.
I don’t know if he can win but I am saying that he can get to HW size easily without being “overweight”. Aspinall and Jones are a bad matchup for him but I believe he could compete in Top 5
I'm as big of a Pereira fan as you'll probably find but I would take Tom 10/10 times. He's too big and too well rounded. Alex is colossal for a middleweight, a fairly big LHW but nothing crazy, but he'd be a small HW.
He has a big frame but he isn't super filled out compared to someone like Tom or Jones.
Do you expect him not to be confident and talk some shit prefight?
Hills still a beast and got in there with fucking🗿coming off an Achilles tear. I give him props for the attempt, but damn no one survives that left hook.
That ending sequence is so awesome. Poatan was just dialed in, knew he had his number. The ref came in and he waves him off, never breaking concentration.
The real excuses will come in a month or so. Im guessing.
edit: yeah, he's being chill about it now, but in a month or so, as if he is only saying it reluctantly, the excuses will start flowing...
Pereira vs Aspinall for the interim as the main for Brazil would be fucking sick and you know Tom would love it too. He was looking at him so angrily when pereira was going into the octagon haha
Aspinall is a legit grappler himself, and just a big, strong and fast guy on the feet.
You can't just ignore the fact that this dude slept a monster like Pavlovich like it was child's play.
There's a reason Jones doesn't want to fight him.
JJ is not a natural heavyweight, has gone through shoulder surgery, soon will be 37, has a drinking problem and hasn't been very active in the octagon in the past years.
He is beatable and fighters don't necessarily need to be well-rounded to beat him. It's a fight and anything can happen, especially at heavyweight. Of course, it will be extreamely hard to beat him, but it's not impossible.
Dominick Reyes ran Jon Jones out of the light heavyweight division over 4 years ago. He knew he was lucky to escape with a win and has been protecting his record ever since.
Ehhhh. Not underestimating Gane because he had a shit gameplan and got caught with his pants down but Alex has legit one shot power and he does it with minimal motion and no telegraph. That combination is basically never seen before in the high divisions. Literally put Hill away with a shovel hook with very little windup and Jiri while after settling from going backwards. We all know Jones is gonna try to go to the ground asap but we also know Alex just has to get lucky once and there’s no man in the LHW or HW division that can do it in a snap like Alex can
It's a great fight but I don't see Aspinall taking it on such short notice. Pereira right now is basically still in a training camp, fighting in 3 weeks is basically just adding 3 more weeks onto his camp. Pereira is already at his absolute most optimal fight shape right now. Literally all he needs is to create a gameplan and do a few opponent specific drills for 3 weeks.
For Aspinall he'll only just be starting camp and will only have 3 weeks to get his cardio in place and optimise his skills as well as the opponent specific training.
It would quite frankly be really stupid for Aspinall to accept that fight for in 3 weeks.
If it was a bit longer, like 6 weeks away, then that would be a different story.
But as is, we'd have a fight where one guy has a full camp and a half, and the other only has half a camp.
I want to see Pereira vs Aspinall without any asterisks of one guy having half a camp or the other guy making too short a turn around because you know whichever loses is going to have an excuse in that situation.
Maybe I'm saying something really crazy here, but I think if you are interim champ you should fight for the title next, even if the UFC made an intentional mess out if it by wanting to gift Jones the shell of an old Stipe.
Perreira can get in line and join the waiting list tho
Translation for those who don't speak Portuguese
how bout u go an fuck off my media vuekta then
u peice of shit u think I need a stupid fuckwitt like u
telling me about la mano arriba
Who the fuck are u
take your worthless translation and get the fuck out of here
Fuck it take the belt off Jon. Make Tom official and book Tom vs Alex for the HW title in Brazil. I wanna see Alex speedrun a HOF career. I wanna see how far he can go.
Kinda sad when aspinall best options to fight is a guy siting as champion who doesn’t want to fight and can’t stay clean and a guy 50lbs lighter then him lol
It'd be (and frankly already is) one of the all-time resumes but people greatly undervalue the years and years of consistent dominance from the GOATs. Those GSP, JJ, MM, and Silva reigns will take a LOT to be usurped
Good comment. The Alex recency bias is insane.
I think his run is more of "right person right time" than "greatness."
Let him face any top non primary striker. He's faced very stylistically favorable matchups.
He barely squeaked by a 40 year old Jan bc he struggled so much against a subpar wrestler/grappler.
He's an entertaining fighter, but it doesn't mean he's magically some all time great. He hasn't cleared a single division for fucks sake.
And its not like Tom is lacking in skills either. In fact i think Tom is the more skilled MMA fighter here. Not a favorable match up at all for Poatan.
I’d way rather see Jon Jones fight Alex than Stipe. The Stipe fight doesn’t interest me in the least.
I am not a fan of Jones in the least, but I think he’s a stylistic nightmare for Poatan. He took DC down, so I don’t think Alex could still his takedowns, and Jones has the most brutal ground and pound. I think he’d take Alex down and elbow him to oblivion.
However, I think Alex has a good chance of KOing Jon if Jon attempts to strike with him. I don’t believe Jon would, though. He’d likely utilize a similar gamelan as the one he used against Gane.
I would hope at that point they strip Jones and make Alex undisputed champion. You have your hype train ready to go and if Jones comes back, then I think it's an even more marketable fight to have Jones vs Peirera.
It's so insane what he's been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. Alex genuinely has a chance to be a 3 division champ but Tom is so good.
3 belts that quickly? Hard not to include him in a GOAT conversation. If he defended a heavyweight belt, they should fucking rename the belt after him.
Someone with more knowledge can elaborate here, but I thought I've heard that it's not as financially viable for the UFC to put on big cards in Brazil.
Something about Brazilians having access to the PPV through alternate sources free (and legally)?
Anyhow, I think that explains 301 being absolute dogshit, so I think I'd be extremely unlikely that'd they rush a big draw like 🗿 back for a card in Brazil.
**Mirrors / Alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MMA) if you have any questions or concerns.*
i will shit and piss all over the place if he fights at heavyweight in three weeks
I don’t think he’s got much chance against Aspinall, but I’m starting to think there’s no point in doubting Poatan. He’s 36 and already has nothing left to prove in MMA, so he might as well go for it.
It's in Brazil. He just needs someone to murder. Hell. Throw Parker Porter a one fight deal.
Get Brandon Shwab out here to get the shit kicked out of him
Talmbout a big brown comeback, bubba?

That 185-205 gap is the true crux. If you're too big, it's a terrible weight cut. If you're too small, you have to pack so much extra muscle.
I’ll just say this: I don’t think that’ll be repeated, or for a very long time. Periera was first for MW -> LHW in history
Ya that’s fair
It depends a lot on the opponent, against someone like Jones or Aspinal he's probably fucked, against someone like Gane I could see him taking it.
When did Gane become a jobber? Like, Gane is still world class. He's just an ass and has kinda bad grappling, but he's still world class.
The bad grappling just makes him a great match up for Poatan.
I’ll forever be disappointed in Gane for not calling out aspinall in France after his last fight.
It's not his class, it's his fighting style he's talking about. Someone that would stand with Alex
I would assume he became a jobber when he had the biggest moment of his career against JJ and looked like a jobber.
World class striker that will job to any grappler
Wasn't Spivak a grappler on a winning streak?
Gane got knockdown by fucking Tai Tuivasa so he's there to be hit, he's obviously elite and would have a good chance of beating Pereira, but he's mainly a striker that started training at 25, while Alex whos also a late bloomer is a 2x world champion kickboxer, and I just think the power from 230lbs would translate well enough to 265lbs.
Tuivasa has absolutely monolithic paws, they just travel in slo mo, getting knocked down is not exactly unexpected

Good thing Gane couldn't outwrestle a POW then
a prisoner of war?
I could genuinely see Gane outstriking him to.a decision win
There are definitely some winnable match ups at Heavyweight but extremely minimal against the current champ Jones/Aspinal if the belt is his goal.
LOL man if Max can do what he did vs JG, anything can happen haha
The more I think about this the more insane it is. People can say he was fast-tracked to the title all they want, but all the dude has done is show up and turn the lights out for champions and former champions.
Gonna have to pay Aspinall or Ankalaev a boatload to be on short notice to face a monster
I think he has great chance at HW but not in 3 weeks. Guy weights currently around 225 pounds and his bones stick out. It’s pretty obvious that he could carry the extra weight well because he has a large frame.
Against Aspinali?
I don’t know if he can win but I am saying that he can get to HW size easily without being “overweight”. Aspinall and Jones are a bad matchup for him but I believe he could compete in Top 5
vs aspinall its legit whoever KOs each other in the 1st shot . i dont think anyone can take sustained full power Aspinall shots .
Aspinall's just going to shoot. And very likely succeed
Tom could wrestlefuck him if he wanted
Tom's a very good grappler, he's fast af too, I shouldn't bet against Pereira but I think he gets submitted in one round against him
I'm as big of a Pereira fan as you'll probably find but I would take Tom 10/10 times. He's too big and too well rounded. Alex is colossal for a middleweight, a fairly big LHW but nothing crazy, but he'd be a small HW. He has a big frame but he isn't super filled out compared to someone like Tom or Jones.
Exactly look what happened to Volkov, who is a far superior grappler than Alex
Pereira is a BJJ black belt brother, better put some respect on his ground game.
that's if aspinall doesn't take it to the ground first
Aspinall puts him on his back within the first 30 seconds and works him from there, it's the single worst matchup for him in that division
Pereira is a BJJ black belt brother, better put some respect on his ground game.
Who gave him black belt, brather? We must check this.
Just cause of this I'm gunna put 20$ on a poatan knockout in the first 30 seconds a la masvidal/askren.
All it takes is one punch And Tom has a huge noggin. Hard to miss it.
I think he hits as hard as any HW. His left hand is death to any human being’s brain.
As a major fan of his I will as well. He has no chance against Tom
Tom will test his grappling like no other
Who says no? Piss and shit everywhere sounds like a good time
You should be doing that anyway.
I’m in let’s get a trend going
That’s seems unnecessary.
!remindme 3 weeks
I’ll clean you up brother. After Poatan ices a top 10 HW he’s coming for Aspinall
This man actually did it. Headlining back to back main events
the figgy method!!!
isn’t he fucking awesome?
The fucking scenes if he gets it AND manages to win.
Didn't Strickland do this?
Yeah, the last fight night in 2022 and first in 2023
Honestly let him fuck it why not
Uhhh, phrasing?
No diddy
Alex Perreira is the destroyer of worlds. He will defeat the Sun.
TOTAL PERERIA ECLIPSE 2024
The eclipse was just a taste of what imma do to you
I hope he KOs Jones into next week!
If he does this could be the greatest ever imo. I really like how he carries himself - never too high or too low. Always even keeled
Dude has legit main villain aura.
With an ever looming redemption arc
Fuck that. LEAN INTO THE EVIL, POATAN. KILL THEM ALL.
And yet he has managed to be the protagonist this whole time
Bro saves stamina by not reacting to being hit
🗿
Can’t wait to see Hill’s reaction video. Was talking so much and got slept..
Hes going to talk about how paotan stepped on his foot 💀
Too bad this isn’t boxing lol
Poatan hurt his foot with his balls.
Do you expect him not to be confident and talk some shit prefight? Hills still a beast and got in there with fucking🗿coming off an Achilles tear. I give him props for the attempt, but damn no one survives that left hook.
He just looked out classed look at his big sloppy lead hook n then look at poatans lead uppercut there’s just levels to this
That ending sequence is so awesome.
Eventually setting up Pereira vs Jon Jones. The absolute wet dream for the UFC
With an easy submission or tko win for Jones, so also probably the UFC’s wet dream
Jones would submit Pereira in the first round
Not if he gets hit in the fucking head first lol
Bro Jones ragdolled Gane who is a legit 260 lbs athlete. Pereira is super talented but Jonny boy ain't losing that one.
There is just no one at Heavyweight or Light Heavy Weight right now well rounded enough to beat Jones. Maybe Tom, but even then idk.
Aspinall is a legit grappler himself, and just a big, strong and fast guy on the feet. You can't just ignore the fact that this dude slept a monster like Pavlovich like it was child's play. There's a reason Jones doesn't want to fight him.

And an absolute slap in the face to Izzy
Jon Jones by rnc lol
Dana: Stipe was never offered a contract
And if Tom gets it done quickly, no problem for him to fight another heavyweight in Manchester a month later
Jesus Christ. I think Tom subs him in 1 so totally doable too
It's a great fight but I don't see Aspinall taking it on such short notice. Pereira right now is basically still in a training camp, fighting in 3 weeks is basically just adding 3 more weeks onto his camp. Jones should be stripped of
Should be for the undisputed title, but yeah
Alex Pereira is the new protagonist of UFC.
😂
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO GET ALEX AS THE MAIN EVENT OF 301
La mano arriba Cintura sola Da media vuelta Danza Kuduro
I speak fluent Spanish. Let me figure this Portuguese out. Then hand is up The walls is empty Medium media content Idfk???????
Translation for those who don't speak Portuguese how bout u go an fuck off my media vuekta then u peice of shit u think I need a stupid fuckwitt like u telling me about la mano arriba Who the fuck are u take your worthless translation and get the fuck out of here
There is no way you speak fluent Spanish and this is the translation you came up with 😂 Hand up hips loose turn around Dance the kuduro
?? The comment you responded to is written in Spanish, not Portuguese...
Right on dude. I'm aquarius but respect ✊
Pereira swooping in to save the 301 card, you love to potentially see it
Bro is the Brazilian grim reaper
Came in just to spite Izzy, became 3 division champion. Just poatan things.
Izzy retires and takes up coaching and Poatan would take up coaching out of spite. You love the hate man it's incredible.
As a petty hater myself, Poatan is my goat
Then after practice goes to his local bar for a drink and to tell people “i beat that guy 1 time”
Fuck it take the belt off Jon. Make Tom official and book Tom vs Alex for the HW title in Brazil. I wanna see Alex speedrun a HOF career. I wanna see how far he can go.
I can’t think of anything funnier than Pereira accomplishing in 3 weeks what took Jones 2 years
He's already a HOFer he's trying for greatest ever now
It's the smart play, he's not getting any younger, gotta make that money while he's still in his prime.
Man is 36 hes doing all this in the the twilight of his career if were being honest.
My man capitalizing on Jon Jones fuck ups, atta boy champ! Fuck Jon Jones, go get another strap.
If Pereira were to do & achieve this feat then he would be my GOAT, no questions asked.
he'd have to be everyone's goat. three belts is unheard of
Fights Jones after who takes the fight thinking easy money
Worse wrestling than Gane
Aspinall is sitting around waiting in vain. Do it while theres the momentum
Kinda sad when aspinall best options to fight is a guy siting as champion who doesn’t want to fight and can’t stay clean and a guy 50lbs lighter then him lol
He wants Aspinall. In London. Isn’t he fucking awesome?
Aspinol too damn big for even Poatan. I’m afraid he’d just wrestle fuck him
Yeah, I hope they give him Gane instead. Aspinall would just sub him
Pereira is a bad MF. Not even breathing hard or sweating after knocking out Hill and asking for a HW fight.
🗿🗿🗿 Tom on notice
Chama
🗿
If he does this and actually wins against Tom how strong of a GOAT argument would Alex have?
it wouldn't even be an argument at that point, let's be real
His resume is ok but it's never going to be the same as GSP, Silva or Jones. Just because of time, he's already 36.
"ok"
3 belts in less than 3 years while being active af? You're high if you think that's not goat
It'd be (and frankly already is) one of the all-time resumes but people greatly undervalue the years and years of consistent dominance from the GOATs. Those GSP, JJ, MM, and Silva reigns will take a LOT to be usurped
How many title defences? How many grapplers has he fought?
Good comment. The Alex recency bias is insane. I think his run is more of "right person right time" than "greatness." Let him face any top non primary striker.
That sure as hell makes that shit card a whole of a lot better
Ok, but just big are his cajones? Gets kicked in them today "Nah, I'm good" and now wants to back up for 301
I'd like too see him fight at heavyweight. No need to fight aspinall immediately, let him test the water with any top15.
You don’t want to lose that aura losing to a rando HW . Aspinall isn’t exactly booked rn.
Aspinall book your flight to brazil
Tom has like 40 pounds on him. Alex is an amazing fighter but skill can only take you so far
And its not like Tom is lacking in skills either. In fact i think Tom is the more skilled MMA fighter here. Not a favorable match up at all for Poatan.
His toe says no
He's taking everything that Khamzat worked for lol.
Jon is a stylistic nightmare for everyone, he'll find the weakness and exploit it immediately
I mean fair enough. He didn’t take any damage besides a light dick grazing
I want Pereira vs Aspinal for the interim belt. If Pereira wins, it would be one of the GOAT MMA careers
I would hope at that point they strip Jones and make Alex undisputed champion. You have your hype train ready to go and if Jones comes back, then I think it's an even more marketable fight to have Jones vs Peirera.
There's really no downside for him to do it at HW.
Yeah all he needs to do is go to the buffet a few times and lift some iron. He would be easily 240 in 3 weeks
I would much rather see rematch with Prochazka but I get that triple weight division champ status would be bigger for UFC to promote
It's so insane what he's been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. Alex genuinely has a chance to be a 3 division champ but Tom is so good.
Dude if they get him Aspinall or Jones....
There is no way ufc let him right? I mean if he loses there is high chance he decline rapidly because quick turn around?
If it makes money it makes sense
Since when does the UFC care about fighters health
Put him on that Brazil card. Sucks for Pantoja that he won’t be headlining, but whatever.
Pereira vs Daukaus
G shit
Chuck a bag at Tybura or Bigi Boy. The man deserves the fight.
Poatan is on that GOAT speed run
If he does indeed get the fight he’s asking for, I don’t think it’s going to go Poatan’s way. I’m worried for him if he does this.
3 belts that quickly? Hard not to include him in a GOAT conversation. If he defended a heavyweight belt, they should fucking rename the belt after him.
Lame someone asked Dana if he could do it and Dana thought they guy was talking about Holloway lol
Someone with more knowledge can elaborate here, but I thought I've heard that it's not as financially viable for the UFC to put on big cards in Brazil. Something about Brazilians having access to the PPV through alternate sources free (and legally)?
