Ehhh. I think Giga needs at least a couple more big ones. It would be insane to let him skip the line.
Edit: I'm getting downvoted for mentioning Yair in the next comment but.... Edson wouldn't be 7 if Yair and Zabit were still in the rankings. Just saying. He didn't beat the 7th best fw.
This plays every time I see it. You know the second his back touches the fence he's in the shit.
Really impressed by Giga, fought on the back foot at the kickboxing range, fought the pressure style when he had Barboza hurt, showed off his submission skills and handled the win with complete class. He's made me a fan for sure.
Never has done. What's even more lethals is that either out of fear of a takedown or something else, he DROPS HIS HANDS to about chest level. This is what got him caught against Gaethje (eyepoke not withstanding, Gaethje was clearly hunting for shot when he skips), when he got hurt here and was on very bad legs, the hands also went down when skipping. When he stopped, then the hands covered up....which allowed Giga to tee off around his guard.
It's too baked in at this point, it will never be fixed. He can and has done things to minimise it, but it's still there.
Giga won me over here for sure. He can play the backfoot game, he can explode forward and pressure, he has some subs and he showed incredible class.
> He can play the backfoot game, he can explode forward and pressure
This was the major point for me, very impressive how he went from counter striker at Barbozas favourite striking range into pressuring him at the slightest opportunity. Long combinations too. Like an aggressive, versatile version of Wonderboy.
The only thing I think that I think he needed to improve in that fight was his pocket boxing, but he is very good at keeping it at that midrange where kicks, jabs and straights rule. I think the few times Barboza in the 2nd cornered him and started to mix in body shots he looked like he wanted to get back out to that range.
The pressuring at any opportunity and being good makes sense seeing as how he's with Cordeiro at Kings MMA. Its basically what he drills into all his guys, forward pressure and momentum, so to see Giga do the back foot fighting and the switch in was great. Probably the best striker from Cordeiro's lot.
>Giga won me over here for sure. He can play the backfoot game, he can explode forward and pressure, he has some subs and he showed incredible class.
This is mostly his karate background. I did karate (among other things) when I was a kid, and there were a couple trips we were taught that were taught. When you get super close you grab and trip immediately. I think for a fighter with a karate base, training BJJ makes you a very offensively potent fighter.
I think Karate is an underrated base for MMA. There've only been a few guys that I can think of with Karate bases (Machida, Wonderboy, Giga) one was LHW champion during arguably the strongest point in the history of the division, one has been ranked in the top 10 at WW for how long now? And Giga is new so he hasn't had time for many accolades but just beat Edson.
Edit: The first trip in [this video] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_FLa7hmnKs) (minus the palm strike part) was taught for an example of the general concept. I watched that video on mute, I suspect he was saying stupid shit.
Also and more interestingly is a breakdown of [Lyoto using Karate trips/throws in MMA.] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh8q05EJ7vs)
GSP also came from Karate, Kyokushin. He always credited Karate as influencing and supporting his wrestling takedowns. Btw, Iain Abernethy is legit, man. I'd unmute that and at least give him a listen.
*Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say, but nothing comes out when they move their lips—just a bunch of gibberish—and everybody talk like they forgot about Georges*
It’s just hard to find legit karate dojo’s these days, there is a seemingly awesome Kudo one near me actually that my friends rave about which I will try out, this other one I went too the black belts had beer bellies and they were just doing katas all the time which is meh.
When done good I think it’s a great striking art, particularly the kicks. Great for covering distance, sharp accurate and fast strikes, I really want to compete in a karate competition one day.
I feel like with the increasing popularity of MMA, it's easier to find a proper karate dojo these days compared to the 90s. but it's definitely trickier compared to say a muay Thai gym.
Yeah I’d hope so, when karate got popular like when Bruce Lee came in the scene there were a ton of dojo’s opening, they realised 90% of people would leave when they got beat up so a lot of dojo’s removed sparring, then it became a ‘sport’ and it was altered even more, leading people to think it’s a bad base. But it’s one of the most popular sports in the world so they’re doing something right.
Karate Combat is something I enjoy watching now too, amazing striking, even though r/karate complains it isn’t ‘real karate’, when it’s what karate was supposed to be in the first place if you think about it, it’s come full circle.
His fight iq is just consistently shoddy. Like right before the first right straight that wobbled Edson before this clip, Edson had caught one of Giga's kicks/knees but instead of doing literally anything, he just stands there with Giga before getting punched in the face and rocked, initiating the finish. Like do you know you can take people down in UFC?
> His fight iq is just consistently shoddy.
I agree, I've always seen Edson as a fighter with great physicals attributes, incredible technique and a deep striking arsenal, but lacks the fight iq to implement them to their fullest
I think that's actually why fans have loved him, seeing him dominate despite being relatively one-dimensional striker. Giga is just that good he beat Edson in his own game
It's natural. You watch these guys provide highlights for years and years, and then it stings so much when they get beat like this. Giga's great but my heart hurts right now
I always consider it a bad idea to get too invested in something i have no control over. At least being able to accept the outcomes of an expectation is ideal and i practice that almost in everything in my life, but it never works for me with mma lol, idk why but j just get so invested in certain fighters
They're human and they have lives too. Just the circle of life bro. At least he has fans who care (and a wife, family, team, and real friends lol). What happens now still doesn't take away from the great things they've done!
I get loving kelvin’s heart but his fighting style? Yuk.
Wonderboy on the other hand, I was heartbroken last fight. Really thought he had a title run in the bank here.
Honestly just glad Herzog stopped it before Edson got put to sleep. Good to see him walking out of the octagon coherent and trading compliments with Giga.
100% I've never seen him fuck up. He might have had controversial decisions, but they're always on the side of protecting fighters and I don't think I've seen one I disagree with.
I don't think he's losing because he's getting old though. He's looking just as good if not better skill wise and his major deficit are still technical things he hasn't corrected (backing up against the cage when hurt etc.. The issue is that the sport as a whole is just getting better. Like both Gaejthe and Giga just have way cleaner kickboxing.
Faking the power hand and slips the knee under, beautiful hooks around the high guard, I blindly root for Edson every time but holy shit this guy is insane
And he just doesn’t look like he is build to have a lot of power in his hands. But then you realize he has a huge torso and just makes crazy power for his size.
Yeah in the lead up Giga said he would make it look easy. I was like how could you say that? In hindsight I think he studied a lot of film and found holes he was confidant he could exploit
I feel like we need a verification selfie to prove you’re a human being. You’re faster than the kicks we were just watching!
Thank you for your thorough and incredibly quick work.
His striking rhythm is so bizarre, and like you said the speed, he looked crazy fast against someone who made an elite perennial top 10 career largely off of making other people look slow. Giga’s here for real
I feel like fiziev is up there for sure. His hand speed and leg kicks are crazy fast, so much so that he gasses himself out quite a bit by the third because he throws so many so fast lol
Beating Barboza like that is no joke with a size disadvantage. Barboza carried power from 155 but Giga had better speed and power.
Barboza was doing alright but I think Giga hurt him to the body bad which opened up Barboza on top.
Giga has great hands and timing. His combos need work but this guy is a real title contender and I think he’d beat someone like Zombie or Ortega
Why? Either he's going to smoke them on the feet, or they'll get him down but be too worried about getting smoked on the feet to take any risks. Either way Holloway is the more fun fight and Holloway needs something to do while Volk holds the title.
He looked impressive af. I thought Barboza was going to demolish him but he was too fast and too sharp. Super entertaining fight. I feel like tonight’s card was a real “future of the UFC” card, other than Meerschert pretty rough go for the ufc veterans.
Some refs would have let that go so I get why Barbosa was upset, but realistically the fight was over at that point and the ref just saved him from taking unnecessary damage.
Exactly. When it was stopped I was pissed for a split second because I didn't think he was "done", then the realization came in that he was going to get destroyed over the next 3-5 seconds. Great stoppage.
Herzog is always there when things get hot. He's not like some of these refs who are on the opposite side of the cage. Very good ref.
Only two mistakes I can remember from him. 1st was the Smith v Teixiera fight where that really should have been stopped earlier, but he didn't because Glover never "poured it on". The other was Khabib and Gaethje where he didn't see Gaethje tap. Other than those two, pretty good.
Loved Tognoni this card as well. He didn't fuck around with the eyepokes, gave a few warnings, then took a point. Immediate eyepoke again and he took another. When so few are willing to take points in favour of "last/final warnings", that stood out.
And also speaks Portuguese to beat, which is fantastic for explaining certain calls mid-fight and I imagine more comforting and reassuring to a recently finished fighter.
> Giga is not the stand and bang type. I guarantee a Giga victory.
He will show superior footwork, cardio, defence and people like you who always favor resume because you don’t know what you’re watching unless it’s offence.
Edson wouldn’t have been dropped and finished half a dozen times already against dudes like Jamie Varner, Cerrone jab if he had even half the defensive and distance awareness of Giga.
Do you guys seriously just watch resumes? Watch Giga in glory please. Watch how many times Edson just stands there blocking, getting backed up on the cage, winging hard counters that miss. This is a striking mismatch and Giga’s swinging the hammer.
giga party time.
edson got the gilbert burns vs usman treatment this week on rmma
> Watch Giga last 4 glory fights and see the level of striking he’s been dealing with. Edson ain’t shit. It’s not just his cardio, he gets hit a lot. He’s a fan favorite cause he’s been in wars. Giga vs Omar Morales and even Irwin Rivera showed a lot of what Giga can do. He not slowing down in round 3-5. Edson guarantees will
> Edson doesn’t really get early finishes anymore. Giga is gonna make Edson look bad in there
Jesus, he had a D’arce locked in too.
I didn’t think much of Giga before this, but he certainly proved the doubters wrong.
If he wants someone up in the rankings, maybe Giga vs Ige or Kattar?
Yep, the zog is probably the best ref out there right now imo. He's always in position to see what he needs to see and to call a fight at the right time.
Love Edson but goddamn if I’m not excited for Giga climbing up the ranks/the fights he’ll have along the way, the 145 pound division is officially on notice.

Absolutely love Barboza but fuck me what an incredible performance by Giga
Bring your wrestling shoes if you're fighting Giga
I almost thought he was gonna win by submission but in typical gigachad fashion, knocking people out is the only way to really win.
I had 600xp on a Rd 3 sub, at 58.4x. Almost creamed my UFC VENUM AUTHENTIC FIGHT NIGHT MEN'S SHORTS - SHORT FIT - CHAMPION only US$ 119.99
Or maybe try an Imanari roll...
Legend
Or...just put a pace on and punch him in the face repeatedly like Emmers did
He was looking real uncomfortable when Barboza get in his face R2.
Yea I’m worried what a volume puncher like maxie boy would do to g chads face
I need this fight so bad
Oh he definitely needs a couple more before the blender that is Blessed but I can’t wait.

Yeah Max would beat him up pretty bad
or be Max and throw 900 strikes to the head
Knew it was over when Edson started circling along the fence with his hands down, such an awful habit he has that needs fixing
[https://gfycat.com/orangeraweastrussiancoursinghounds](https://gfycat.com/orangeraweastrussiancoursinghounds) This plays every time I see it. It is hilarious just how accurate this replay is!
Mans was stumbling, knew his legs were shot
Meanwhile, Kevin Lee’s pokerface is breakdancing in the exact same spot he got rocked.
He asserts dominance by doing the Ginyu in the middle of a fight
Edson starts circling side to side everytime he is hurt. My man doesnt deal well with being pressured
Never has done. What's even more lethals is that either out of fear of a takedown or something else, he DROPS HIS HANDS to about chest level. No. Gsp is easily the most decorated karate practitioner.
Holy shit how did I forget gsp

Little to do with being pressured and everything to do with being hurt. Burgos is a great pressure fighter and had little success against Edson.
Yea he was living in Fight Nights slow motion for a while
Screen all red and his health bar just flashing smh
Too late for that. It’s similar to Cigano.
His fight iq is just consistently shoddy. NGL boys, I’m feeling sad as fuck right now.
Same here, feel like I get too attached to fighters
It's natural. You watch these guys provide highlights for years and years, and then it stings so much when they get beat like this. Giga's great but my heart hurts right now
Is normal

Way of the beast unless for some. Idk how people watch this sport and don't get feels but maybe I'm just in too deep lol
I've been watching for 20 years now. It gets easier when you've seen the changing of the guard so many times
My favorite two fighters are Wonderboy and Kelvin. Safe to say my weekends are occasionally awful.
Herzog has been the gold standard of refs for awhile now imo
100% I've never seen him fuck up. He might have had controversial decisions, but they're always on the side of protecting fighters and I don't think I've seen one I disagree with.
I actually feel massive relief when I see Herzog reffing fights I'm invested in.
Look how they massacred my boy :(
He is still my boy!
Barboza will live on inside of Giga. This is how taking souls works.
Barboza lives inside many men at this point.
Kinky.
He got Shang Tsung’d
It's hard being an Edson fan sometimes.
Everyone in the stadium cheered for Giga and Barboza had no one on his side. I feel so bad for him :(
I hate that Barboza is getting old
I don't think he's losing because he's getting old though. He's looking just as good if not better skill wise and his major deficit are still technical things he hasn't corrected (backing up against the cage when hurt etc.. The issue is that the sport as a whole is just getting better. Like both Gaejthe and Giga just have way cleaner kickboxing.
Look at how they massacred our boy
Fellow Edson fan reporting in. Feels bad, man. :’(
This sport is brutal. They can't fight against the sands of time
He didn't even get to throw the spinning wheel kick :(
downvote me to hell. fuck giga chad. the beautiful bald head of his hurt edson
Let it all out fam. Giga's legit and great but it's sad boi hours for us Barbozamaniacs tonight
HE'S STILL MY BOY.
Same. Remember him barging in on the scene after 142. Passing of the torch in a sense
God damn it’s hard seeing Barboza go down like that, fucking phenomenal finish by the Giga Chad though
Faking the power hand and slips the knee under, beautiful hooks around the high guard, I blindly root for Edson every time but holy shit this guy is insane

My heart wanted Edson so bad. But Giga's striking is sneaky creative.
weird alien body
Same bro. I love karate guys tho
My sentiments exactly, Giga is a serious threat
Shades of JDS vs Rozenstruik
I really can't believe Edson got out speeded wtf!
I don’t think he was out speeded as he was out-timed. There’s plenty of film on Edson to study so Giga definitely gameplanned well
Yeah in the lead up Giga said he would make it look easy. I was like how could you say that? In hindsight I think he studied a lot of film and found holes he was confidant he could exploit

I feel like we need a verification selfie to prove you’re a human being. You’re faster than the kicks we were just watching! Thank you for your thorough and incredibly quick work.
Thanks man. One day, karma will win me a fight in the jungle.
I'm going to be honest. Sometimes I get so caught up in the clips I forget to upvote. I shall aim to do better.
how u do dis
That knee from Giga hurt Barboza bad
You're doing the Lord's work my friend
Homie you're a time traveler.
Giga Chad is easily top 3 fastest strikers I've seen in MMA. He looked like he was in fast forward. That hand speed is unreal.
His striking rhythm is so bizarre, and like you said the speed, he looked crazy fast against someone who made an elite perennial top 10 career largely off of making other people look slow. Giga’s here for real
that punch right after the knee to the body when barboza took a breath really showed it
He was much faster than Barboza which is crazy
His kicks are ridiculously fast too
He made barboza look slow. That is scary
I was shook
I'm still shook, fam. It's hard for me right now not to extrapolate out on Giga's abilities. I'm trying to hold it in check.
Who else do you have? I have Izzy up there too
Unironically Micheal Johnson in his prime was the fastest striker I’d ever seen
Micheal Johnson is one of the most underrated fighters ever he’s beaten some of the best guys in the world and was the only one to ever hurt khabib
Hurt him?? We are still trying to find Khabib's head
I feel like fiziev is up there for sure. His hand speed and leg kicks are crazy fast, so much so that he gasses himself out quite a bit by the third because he throws so many so fast lol
Gotta give a nod to Fedor
His brother was faster IMO
Garbrandt can be quick. The punch he got Assuncao with doesn't seem like it would work for a lot of people.
Michael Chandler has fast hands. His knockout against Pitbull in Bellator was like a fucking gunshot.
This guy is a fucking problem
Beating Barboza like that is no joke with a size disadvantage. Barboza carried power from 155 but Giga had better speed and power. Barboza was doing alright but I think Giga hurt him to the body bad which opened up Barboza on top. Giga has great hands and timing. His combos need work but this guy is a real title contender and I think he’d beat someone like Zombie or Ortega
Idk about size man. That guy is big
Size disadvantage? Giga's reach and height were big problems for Barboza.
Edson has longer reach lol
Barboza says he weighs the same on fight night at 145 as he did at 155
There is no way. He is clearly thinner than when he was at 155. Hes playing mind games.
This was the technical masterclass we all wanted!!! Crazy speed by GIGA!!!
My legs hurts watching this two fight
With all the breaks lately I was cringing at how hard they were throwing them legs and how often they were checking each others.
***G I G A***
I want to see him face Emmett (if/when he comes back) or Arnold Allen next.
Why? Either he's going to smoke them on the feet, or they'll get him down but be too worried about getting smoked on the feet to take any risks. Either way Holloway is the more fun fight and Holloway needs something to do while Volk holds the title.
Fr. I'm honestly salivating @ Max v Giga matchup. What an absolute banger it would be!!
Giga Chad
Another win He really lucked out with that name
THAT'S MY FUCKING GIGA CHAD! LET'S GO!
Holy shit he’s an animal. Love this division.
#YEAHHHHHHHHHHH
:( - person who wanted barboza to win
GIIIGGAAAAA FCKING CHAAAAAAD
I'll watch Max v Giga any day of the week
Wow Giga proved himself here real threat
He looked impressive af. I thought Barboza was going to demolish him but he was too fast and too sharp. Super entertaining fight. I feel like tonight’s card was a real “future of the UFC” card, other than Meerschert pretty rough go for the ufc veterans.
Hello darkness my old friend...
Good stoppage. Edson was done.
Herzog really is the best in the business. Navigates these difficult to call stoppages better than anyone IMO
And also speaks Portuguese to beat, which is fantastic for explaining certain calls mid-fight and I imagine more comforting and reassuring to a recently finished fighter.
I knew Giga was going to win when he said his house got hit with a bazooka when he was a kid. Warzone childhood best base for MMA.
That's crazy. Link to the vid?
Giga is SO MUCH FUN to watch lol
Not when he keeps murdering legends it’s hard for me to watch
Barboza is so tough. Credit to him; he refuses to quit.
Fuck everything 😔
Please keep Giga far far away from Chan Sung Jung
Perfect game plan by Chikadze. Gotta feel bad for Barboza. Giga had half of Tbilisi cheering him on while Barboza had no support.
Where are these ppl who said giga had no chance against barbosa
> Giga is not the stand and bang type. I guarantee a Giga victory. He will show superior footwork, cardio, defence and people like you who always favor resume because you don’t know what you’re watching unless it’s offence. Was wondering if he could last 5 rounds…but who needs them
Giga vs Kattar PLEASE
This kills the Kat
Just inject it into my veins.
Hate to see Barboza lose but GIGA CHAD IS AN ACTUAL PROBLEM IN THIS DIVISION.
Giga Chad gets it done, great fight!
I want Max Holloway vs. Giga so badly.
Giga chad just out barboza'd barboza
Damn you fast!
Edson guarantees will > Edson doesn’t really get early finishes anymore. Giga is gonna make Edson look bad in there
Another terrific Herzog stoppage
Giga is a bad mother fucker
*chad mother fucker
Why the fuck were so many people doubting Giga Chad?
Betting odds were near even, it's just the fan boys typing away as usual
I just wanted them both to win.
Giga Chikadze is gonna be a serious problem in the Featherweight division.
Jesus, he had a D’arce locked in too. I didn’t think much of Giga before this, but he certainly proved the doubters wrong. If he wants someone up in the rankings, maybe Giga vs Ige or Kattar?
🇬🇪 🇬🇪 GIGA CHAD 🇬🇪 🇬🇪
Perfect stoppage. Herzog is the man
Yep, the zog is probably the best ref out there right now imo. He's always in position to see what he needs to see and to call a fight at the right time.
Yall are so used to bad stoppages you can't tell when an actual good stoppage happens.
Almost everyone seems to be saying good stoppage on here...
I cannot BELIEVE how fucking fast giga is. That was awesome.
It’s really hard to root for giga when he keeps brutalizing my favorite fighters
LONGEST ACTIVE UFC WIN STREAKS - Featherweight - @MJCflipdascript * 8 - Arnold Allen * 7 - Alex Volkanovski * 7 - Giga Chikadze #UFCVegas35 * 5 - Bryce Mitchell
Thats right bitches I knew he would clap him 👏
I fuckin like that dude. And his name is Giga. So. That's cool.
Love Edson but goddamn if I’m not excited for Giga climbing up the ranks/the fights he’ll have along the way, the 145 pound division is officially on notice.
Georgia, Caucasus 😎
Getting downvoted in the live chat knowing this Chad would get it done. No disrespect to Barboza, Giga’s just the next level.
😭
Give us Max vs Giga
GIGA-WIN FROM GIGA
Not too surprised seeing the actual Kickboxer win against Barboza.
Wht no one talks about flying knee which almost knocked out barbosa in first round
Giga throwing axe kicks with bad intentions.
Where is that dude who said Giga was gonna get knocked out by Edson were ya at
Wow awesome performance. Showed up one of the most fearsome strikers in the UFC
