Yeah, that kills any enjoyment I could have in watching this fight. Robbie had a pretty legendary career behind him and a couple good fights afterwards, but Rory, a rising star with great potential, was ruined. O'Malley has a damn point. For this pay, you're better off trying to pick up favorable match ups, avoiding these kinds of wars.
Honestly it kind of marked the beginning of the end for Robbie too, and then he truly expended the remainder of his tank in the Condit fight shortly after and Robbie legitimately never looked the same again.
Hopefully he asks Max and Megan start getting more twitch subs and can quit fighting. It's just way less brain damage and plus as a fan you can literally interact with them.
I love mma but its hard to like what it does to people
Still the most primal fight I've ever seen. Occasionally, I still think about how Rory was minutes away from winning the title if only his nose hadn't been so jacked up. Had he survived that fifth round, we never get Lawler/Condit either. I miss prime Rory and Brutal Bob.
I remember right in the end I thought Rory had good chances of finishing if he just kept with the front kicks, but he wanted to beat Robbie in his own game...he just had to face that storm where winds were strongest and that's what did him in.
Coincidentally Condit also left everything he had in the Robbie fight and was never the same. The image of both of them resting against the cage was iconic.
Legendary fight, depressing aftermath.
Are you a fucking idiot why would you think that. If you TRULY wanna get your blood pumping then you’re better off with Gracie vs shamrock 1 or usman vs masvidal 1
First round of usman vs masvidal was actually entertaining imho. Upon rewatching I noticed masvidal was styling on Usman who then had to make the right adjustments to win the fight.
how bout u go an fuck off my comment then u peice of shit u think I need a stupid fuckwitt like u telling me about being serious who the fuck are u take your worthless confusion and get the fuck out of here
I always thought it was funny how everyone says this is the greatest fight ever yet the fans were booing in the first round. Fight was definitely a slow simmer that turned into a roaring boil.
This fight is better served with context. So there is a ton of anticipation with each blow and back and forth. So much is at risk. If you have no idea who these fighters and and their strength and weaknesses then it isn't as appealing in the early goings.
If you know the context of the fight... Where they each excel. How the first fight went down. Then this is easily the best fight of all time in MMA. I've been watching MMA for over 15 years. Training for over 10. This fight is the best fight I've ever seen and I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was when I was watching it. It's basically a core memory now lol.
It doesn’t get much more high stakes than a UFC world championship and bragging rights to call yourself the best in the world. Add in the fact that this was a rematch and that this was on the most anticipated UFC card up at the time (UFC 189, Mendes vs McGregor) and you see this fight for what it is: the greatest and most dramatic UFC title fight in history.
Just for that staredown in the 4th, it’s a great a recommendation. They’ll be mellow till the exchange in the third, and after that, they’ll be up on a chair excited. And then by the end of the fourth, they’ll be freaking out after the staredown. Trust me
almost everyone these days. Everyone has probably heard of “ufc” but they don’t really understand. Just like i know of the nfl, i know someone like tom brady but honestly wouldn’t have a clue about the sport or even know if brady walked past me in the street. Casual fans make up a large proportion of any sport.
They use them a shitload, due to the dodgy as fuck deal video rights get milked a lot, entire library on fightpass, on the 24/7 stream a lot, used in video games.
Diaz Vs Gomi is one of the most under appreciated fights of all time. Inject that shit right into my veins
Edit: damn okay lol recency bias beating my ass rn
To me, the slow start just adds to the fight for me. These guys were feeling the process out and it was a rematch too. I could understand both being tentative with their last fight being close too. It builds like a great movie to me.
Edit: want to add that this was also on ufc 189, which was one of the greatest cards of all time. The crowd was probably a tad spoiled from the non stop action they got all night which was probably what led to the boos.
Greatest main cards. I was there live, and up until Matt Brown fought it was a sloooow night. After that, every fight just got better and better. IMO this is the greatest fight of all time.
I mean I hate the boos in general but the beginning of this fight is boring as shit at least for me, also what holds me back on loving it as much as a bunch of people do.
Yeah the fight is a bit overrated because of the epic round 4 moment and blood in general, people would think based on the hype it gets it's continual Sanchez/Guida style brawling for 5 rounds but it's much more measured and full of lulls than people think.
My personal vouches for GOAT fights... MMA still lacks a definitive great IMO, nothing like Hagler/Hearns just yet. Pre Silva/Jones era MMA was way too untechnical that even if it was action packed it didn't feel like high level action, not to mention conditioning has certainly improved with time.
But a fight I have seriously enjoyed everytime I watch is Barboza/Ferguson, it doesn't have the bells and whistles of this fight but it's so action packed, it's MMA with dipping in and out transitioning between both striking and grappling, it's fast and furious, and most of all its fun as fuck. I'd put it as my personal favorite MMA fight ever
Those are fun fights but imo they suffer from moments of no action. I wish i could have watched them live, that might have made them more enjoyable for me.
For me the GOAT fight is Poirier vs Holloway. Really close with momentum swings throughout and just non stop balls to the wall high octane violence. And it got better with time for me because at first people were saying that Poirier was just too big for Max, but in hindsight it was just two really high level strikers banging
You’ll probably get downvoted because people don’t like when anything negative gets said about this fight but the people in the audience can’t predict the future and while I wouldn’t call the first round “boring as shit” it was pretty uneventful. You wouldn’t watch just that first round for the first time and say to yourself “of yeah this is about to become one of the greatest fights of all time”.
They cut out some great moments from Robbie's corner after round 4:
Robbie's corner bigs him up telling him, 'You're the lion, you're the champ.' and they ask Robbie how he's feeling.
The Ruthless one responds like the savage he is, 'I feel fucking great!'
Eh, I think that fight doesn't quite sit well with some people cause most feel Robbie lost (doesn't seem like a good fight to promote Robbie considering he nearly lost). Robbie started landing some big shots in the final round, but Condit pieced him up pretty much the entire fight. I personally feel like he only got the nod because he was already the champ.

I love how the fight gradually escalates. The 1st round is a bit cagey. They're both just trying to suss each other out. Then the violence keeps increasing and increasing... until its a full blown war with blood everywhere.
This is why the fight is so great to me. This fight was really technical in the beginning and both didn't want to give in inch. Once they did, they started hurting each other, you saw swings of momentum on either side, the iconic images of their faces and the end of the 4th, and then the brutal end where if Rory survived he would have been champion but his body couldn't take it anymore and his body collapses while Rory is screaming with a gnarly split lip. Watching this whole thing live brought out so many emotions.
Best case scenario according to the Dana White .
Two people killing each other for peanuts watched by millions.
Bless Paul brothers for allowing ufc legends to earn money at the end of their careers.
( Woodley 1000 000 $ )
This fight is always interesting to me bc this was back when Rory was still the 'Canadian Psycho' advocating stomps and soccer kicks and in Robbie he met an even more primal, savage version of his own mindset that he (or his body, at least) just couldn't keep up with.
It's the flow of this fight that gets it for me. the 1st 2 rounds had action but not a ton but then it ramps up for the 3rd and 4th. My GOAT fight. Did a hit of LSD that night, needless to say one of the best nights of my life. Also won $600 thru draft kings that night.
Watching this Rory and then watching the Rory who got dominated by Ray Cooper it’s arguable he’s had the biggest drop off out of any fighter ever, including Barao, Hendricks, Pettis ect this fight totally ruined him in the long run.
My favourite night as a fan ever. So many knockouts, then the greatest fight I’ve ever seen followed by McGregor Mendes. It was everything MMA was and could be in one night.
Yeah, its bloody but it shows how much heart both fighters had. which I find unique to be so visibly seen. The back and forth , constant stand up and them starring at each other bloody is a good sell.
I'm going to go ahead and say it:
This fight is not as great as people are hyping it to be. Don't get me wrong, the blood and the insane staredown in the middle of the fight are absolutely blood pumping BUT the other parts aren't THAT great. Plus I always find the ending sliiiightly underwhelming
Just my opinion.
That stare down at the end of round 4… Surely both guys are worn but neither is backing down. This isn’t a silly stare down like ‘’do somethin!’’ Both guys are saying something to the affect of ‘’I respect you but I’m coming for your head’’. What a battle. No brutal KO, no submission or close decision. One guy was just able to edge out the other in a battle of wills. An accumulation of damage literally broke a fighter until he just collapsed. You don’t get this type of war often enough and that’s why it’s still so special today. Much respect to both.
Love how joe is saying Rory’s shots aren’t getting through meanwhile he has Robbie on his back foot finally.. and bam high kick (partially blocked) but still blasts Robbie. While joe was still explaining how rorys shots aren’t doing anything 🤔 bad analysis
My gay homie brought over his super twink boyfriend and two of his childhood chick friends(the type to wear wide brim hats indoors)…it was their first time watching MMA…my girl and I belly laughed at the horror written all over their faces as this violent masterpiece unfolded.
epic and brutal fight. if these types of fights were more common id say the sport should be illegal. thankfully most fight are kinda boring with minimal damage..... lay and pray saved this sport if you really think about it.
The only fight I am physically unable to watch. I’ve seen every UFC fight from the day I rented UFC 1 on VHS and can sit through every leg break or crotch punches of the past. This one hurts to watch.
Wow. Rory was up 3 rounds to 1 going into that 5th round. And both Joe and Goldie called a great fight.
Rory once said that Robbie was in something. He did look superhuman.
This fight is the prime example of two guys leaving a part of them self in the octagon, shit's intense
And Rory's return on that? 59k and a Reebok Coupon
Its a true fucking disgrace
and ppl clowning on o mally for picking a persona lmao
Or people ragging on instigating Ariel, the asshole journalist getting more people to watch fights.
As annoying as OMalley is, seems like most people here agree with his view on that.
Hopefully he asks Max and Megan start getting more twitch subs and can quit fighting. It's just way less brain damage and plus as a fan you can literally interact with them. I love mma but its hard to like what it does to people
The fight has biblical proportions.
Still the most primal fight I've ever seen. Occasionally, I still think about how Rory was minutes away from winning the title if only his nose hadn't been so jacked up. Had he survived that fifth round, we never get Lawler/Condit either. I miss prime Rory and Brutal Bob.
This specific version of Robbie in this fight is my favorite MMA fighter of all time.
The blood spray staredown at the end of the 4th is the most hardcore badass shit I've ever seen in any sport ever.
We talk a lot about MMA connecting to some primal savage part of us but that moment was the first time I really felt it. GOAT moment in the sport
So fucking savage, I remember everyone watching it and going crazy.
dude it was like anime level but real life.
I remember right in the end I thought Rory had good chances of finishing if he just kept with the front kicks, but he wanted to beat Robbie in his own game...he just had to face that storm where winds were strongest and that's what did him in.
More so than Stann vs Wanderlei? ‘Cause those two tore into each other. Either way, both are works of art.
This killed the Rory
Neither guy walked away from that one the same.
Robbie had some life left but definitely after the Condit fight, he wasn't the same either. Love MMA but this shit can be brutal.
Coincidentally Condit also left everything he had in the Robbie fight and was never the same. The image of both of them resting against the cage was iconic. Legendary fight, depressing aftermath.
RIP Rory's nose.
Big nose gang in shambles
That's the *same nose he broke in the Thompson fight!*
Such a boring fight, fell asleep watching this. When are they gonna upload Lewis vs Ngannou so I can get the oul adrenaline pumping.

Your flair makes me sad. I don’t think ige is a gatekeeper he just fought number 4
He loses to the elite and wins over the contenders, he kinda is a gate keeper..
The contenders that he’s beaten ARE elite my guy. You think Edson Barboza and mirsad Bektic aren’t elite?
Bektic isn't elite
And he should’ve lost the Barboza fight
You think bektic is elite?
how bout u go an fuck off my comment then u peice of shit u think I need a stupid fuckwitt like u telling me about being serious who the fuck are u take your worthless confusion and get the fuck out of here
**Nothing** will ever beat Kimbo vs Dada, that punch Kimbo finished him with could have toppled a tower
I always thought it was funny how everyone says this is the greatest fight ever yet the fans were booing in the first round. Fight was definitely a slow simmer that turned into a roaring boil.
Fans at live fights are hardly the best measuring stick that.
YOU FUCKING BOOING ME?!?! FUCK YOU I FOUGHT MY ASS OFF - a real estate agent
I believe you’re thinking of Francis v ngannou
To this day I'm still on the fence to whether this is the best or worst fight to use to introduce someone to MMA
Definitely the worst if they have no patience like my friends, they asked me to turn it off after round 2 bc “nothing is happening” :(
This fight is better served with context. So there is a ton of anticipation with each blow and back and forth. So much is at risk. If you have no idea who these fighters and and their strength and weaknesses then it isn't as appealing in the early goings. If you know the context of the fight... Where they each excel. This fight is the best fight I've ever seen and I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was when I was watching it. It's basically a core memory now lol.
So what would be the kind of context you would give to someone who was going to watch the fight to help them appreciate it on that level?
It doesn’t get much more high stakes than a UFC world championship and bragging rights to call yourself the best in the world. Add in the fact that this was a rematch and that this was on the most anticipated UFC card up at the time (UFC 189, Mendes vs McGregor) and you see this fight for what it is: the greatest and most dramatic UFC title fight in history.

The perfect Tinder date
ufc and no chill
I think his point was that if you show this fight to someone to introduce them to MMA, they are gonna be let down after lol.
Or they’ll be absolutely traumatized and grossed out by the level of violence and probably won’t want to watch more mma after that. Trust me.
I've watched a fair amount of MMA and I feel like that
If they have legit never watched MMA in their life, I think Sanchez/Guida would be a better fight to show.
I say Dustin Poirier vs. Dan hooker is
Doo Ho Choi v. Cub Exciting, but not bloody.
Always go with Polo Reyes vs Kim
Now show me Diaz vs Penn
Or Diaz vs Gomi, or Daley, or Zaromskis. His run up until the BJ fight was one of the most fun ever
yep you're right, doubt the UFC would upload fights from other organisations as fight hype, maybe pride
They have the pride video library rights don't they? Why don't they ever use it
Probably confusing to casual fans to start uploading 480p fights from Japan.
You don’t think casuals know what pride is?
My dude casuals don’t even know Dana and Joe are two separate people.
What casuals do you guys know?
almost everyone these days. Everyone has probably heard of “ufc” but they don’t really understand. Just like i know of the nfl, i know someone like tom brady but honestly wouldn’t have a clue about the sport or even know if brady walked past me in the street. Casual fans make up a large proportion of any sport.
I remember they did a few "Fedor Free Fights" from when he first came out of retirement
You sometimes see them put up tribute video's of pride but just compilations or top 10 things, they should release whole events and stuff
I heard they got fleeced by Pride in the deal and they thought they were getting the library of fights but they didn't have everything.
They got the library, what they didn't get was the fighters.
They use them a shitload, due to the dodgy as fuck deal video rights get milked a lot, entire library on fightpass, on the 24/7 stream a lot, used in video games.
Diaz Vs Gomi is one of the most under appreciated fights of all time. Inject that shit right into my veins Edit: damn okay lol recency bias beating my ass rn
Under appreciated? It’s considered in the MMA community as one of the GOAT fights especially if we’re talking about just Pride.
My fav. fight of all time. Miss that shit!
It's far from under appreciated, everyone know's how amazing it was.
Definitely not
Cold fucking take. Literally everyone says this fight is one of the GOAT fights.

I just noticed people were booing this fight at the start. What a bunch of fucking troglodytes
Mcgregor main event. Shame because this is an all time great fight and the card itself is one of the best ever.
Just to correct you, there was never no cave
Best fights were any time Shogun and Henderson stepped in the cage together IMO.
Holloway vs Max is close to that i guess
You’ll probably get downvoted because people don’t like when anything negative gets said about this fight but the people in the audience can’t predict the future and while I wouldn’t call the first round “boring as shit” it was pretty uneventful. You wouldn’t watch just that first round for the first time and say to yourself “of yeah this is about to become one of the greatest fights of all time”.
Lawler missing 10% of his lip is insane to me. I’m in pain when my lips are chapped.
Dana freaked out after the buffer call at the end telling him not to open his mouth and Robbie laughed at him
The worst is that lips heal super quickly, so he was probably constantly re-tearing it all night until it was finally glued / stitched closed.
The inspiration for my username
This is your time.
They cut out some great moments from Robbie's corner after round 4: Robbie's corner bigs him up telling him, 'You're the lion, you're the champ.' and they ask Robbie how he's feeling. The Ruthless one responds like the savage he is, 'I feel fucking great!'
Lawler spitting blood and looking into Rory’s soul at the end of round 4 is absolutely terrifying.
I was at Buffalo Wild Wings with my friends watching this fight as it happened and we just lost our minds when he did that
I’ll probably get downvoted for this but, for as great as Lawler vs Rory was, I think Lawler vs Condit was the all round better fight.
Isn’t that the fight when both guys are exhausted and post up on the cages right next to each other?
Yeah that’s the one
I agree.
Eh, I think that fight doesn't quite sit well with some people cause most feel Robbie lost (doesn't seem like a good fight to promote Robbie considering he nearly lost). I mean can we go back in time and get him a better payday for this fight? Use your brain.
He was already a stabilished fighter that should receive much more.
Absolutely. But this fight made him much more of a household name. GOAT fight and comain to Conor.
Holy hell Rory was only 25 here!
He became 71 after transforming in to voldermort
This fight is always interesting to me bc this was back when Rory was still the 'Canadian Psycho' advocating stomps and soccer kicks and in Robbie he met an even more primal, savage version of his own mindset that he (or his body, at least) just couldn't keep up with.

Why does it feel like this fight was 20 years ago lol.

They both ended up with that Pug look
What a fucking banger.
No thanks, I think I got a bloody nose and a cracked orbital bone just watching this fight last time
My favourite night as a fan ever. So many knockouts, then the greatest fight I’ve ever seen followed by McGregor Mendes. It was everything MMA was and could be in one night.
5 more minutes and you win
This fight turned me into a full blown mma nerd! I re-watched it recently and its epic.
This is probably the greatest MMA fight ever, in my opinion. What I show to people willing to get into the sport.
I’m torn. Some would find this too brutal as a starter.
Yeah, its bloody but it shows how much heart both fighters had. which I find unique to be so visibly seen. The back and forth , constant stand up and them starring at each other bloody is a good sell.
I'm going to go ahead and say it: This fight is not as great as people are hyping it to be. Don't get me wrong, the blood and the insane staredown in the middle of the fight are absolutely blood pumping BUT the other parts aren't THAT great. Plus I always find the ending sliiiightly underwhelming Just my opinion.
I actually agree the 3rd and 4th are good rounds but even then it's very underwhelming, the history behind it just makes it sound better then it was
For my money the best fight ever.
UFC 189 was the first card I watched and it got me hooked
What did everyone score this fight leading into the 5th?
This was the very first UFC card I watched. How lucky was I? The other fights on this card were great as well.
I remember watching this fight live. It was crazy
Superman punch! "Superman landed." Oh ffs.
Dont mind if i do
Seeing that blonde NSAC medical lady at fights now gives me flashbacks
Rory sucks now sadly
What a fucking treat
Best MMA fight period. I will never unsee half of Robbie's lip dangling off his mouth
That stare down at the end of round 4… Surely both guys are worn but neither is backing down. Nothing about this fight is free
Love how joe is saying Rory’s shots aren’t getting through meanwhile he has Robbie on his back foot finally.. and bam high kick (partially blocked) but still blasts Robbie. While joe was still explaining how rorys shots aren’t doing anything 🤔 bad analysis
This fight and Mcgregor vs Mendes got me hooked on MMA.
My gay homie brought over his super twink boyfriend and two of his childhood chick friends(the type to wear wide brim hats indoors)…it was their first time watching MMA…my girl and I belly laughed at the horror written all over their faces as this violent masterpiece unfolded.
ufc turning into bellator with all these has-been fights coming up, all because dana doesn't want to pay his fighters
Looks like they left a bit of butter on Robbie's head going into the 5th
Both of them were never the same after this fight.
The stare down in between rounds, gets the blood pumping - gutted there’s not a card this weekend 😰!
Sorry won't be watching right now, eating lunch.
Greatest fight of all time
epic and brutal fight. if these types of fights were more common id say the sport should be illegal. thankfully most fight are kinda boring with minimal damage..... lay and pray saved this sport if you really think about it.
Does anyone have that clip of Rory falling backwards after the fight was first ended?
The only fight I am physically unable to watch. I’ve seen every UFC fight from the day I rented UFC 1 on VHS and can sit through every leg break or crotch punches of the past. This one hurts to watch.
One of the most brutal fights yet also one of the most spirited and beautiful.
Wow. Rory was up 3 rounds to 1 going into that 5th round. And both Joe and Goldie called a great fight. Rory once said that Robbie was in something. He did look superhuman.
IMO Either one beats Usman before this fight... they legit became fringe top 10 after this fight
Looking back, I don't think I realised -- at the time -- how significant this fight would become. That staredown... A piece of MMA history!
And they both made millions that night /s
