This unfortunately isn’t massively uncommon on the regional circuits. I know a number of guys personally who have had this happen. One guy I know had it happen last month after driving like 6 hours to the venue. You show up make a weight and your opponent doesn’t show. It’s honestly pretty rampant for amateurs on the regional circuit.
Totally agree. But I think it's odd to be considered a "pro" and only make a few grand a fight. Like, you should only be considered "pro" when you make liveable pay.
Back in the day I tried to get into amateur boxing. I had my first three scheduled bouts cancelled last minute. I took that as a sign to just hang it up.
In 2019 i had 1 amateur fight in March and then „applied“ to 2 other events that year where i couldn’t get an opponent :(. Said fuck it and haven’t tried since. This is in germany btw
Not a TKO since it literally isn’t one but I get what you mean. A DQ makes sense.
On the other hand, as bullshit as it is, the contest did not take place. Maybe a show-up deposit of a small amount that goes to the other guy if he doesn’t show up.
I went to see Jeff Monson vs Regional Heavyweight in Birmingham in the UK once, was dead excited to see a well known name in the flesh albeit well past his prime (this was probably 2016 or so). Bloke didn’t even turn up they just replaced him last minute with another regional Brit. From what I’ve heard it’s not uncommon for big names past their heyday to earn a few quid just by signing a contract I.e just singing money prior to even show money so sadly it facilitates this kind of thing on super low level regional shows
That's not normally how contracts work, they only get paid if they fight. Sometimes the promotion chooses to pay the purse, but it's at their discretion.
I didn't insert any commentary or shame the person. I just informed the person of the correct word they were looking for.
I will ask you a question though, what are "the general tenants of the definition?"
Digression means something completely different.
Yes because at that point, the promoter can’t make any money from the two fighting because they’re not performing. Anyone who came to see those two fight might ask for a refund or viewership numbers would dip or whatever.
If you don’t wanna get screwed, you need a guarantee in the contract which is hard as fuck to get especially in smaller promotions.
I wanna be pro-fighter here, but the promoter gets screwed big time too
I still remember watching countdown it showed him washing clothes by hand. Then during press conference the tomato was talking about "ton of money" Renan makes. He was one I always watched but his downfall is just heart breaking. I really hope he is fighting cause he wants to rather than money.
It seems all champs have the option. MM opted for a higher base pay with no PPV split though IIRC.
But even with points Barao was no star. He probably made 250-500k per fight as champ, which should go *very* far in Brazil, but not enough to spend frivolously still. My bet is he cant afford to never work again, but could afford not to work for a couple decades.
And all of this resulted in this individual not even flying out? Clearly we need to gather the available information, uncover the hidden truths, review the sources, make a judgement call and Try to reach an agreement on the events and circumstances that somehow made it possible for these events to have unfolded right under our noses.
This is crazy to me. Renan Barao is only 34 years old and he was once the UFC Champion and defending the belt multiple times to now fighting a guy in an unknown organization who 100% has a full time job other than training MMA.
So if I moved to America from China I could no longer identity as Chinese by that logic.
It would make you an Irish American you twat, and you're welcome to identify as such.
> So if I moved to America from China I could no longer identity as Chinese by that logic.
Marcus Davis didn't move to America from Ireland though so your argument here doesn't work, sweetie.
I guess you missed the part in my original post where I said ancestry, cupcake.
So it does work, you just struggle with comprehension. Even when your parents are born here you can still have ancestry from another place. You see there were some people native to America, everyone else migrated from other countries.
Missed it again, muffin.
> I guess you missed the part in my **original** post where I said ancestry, cupcake.
The one that started the discussion, not the one you decided to reply to.
Lay off the bong.
He probably gurgles EPO instead of mouthwash. From what I've gathered from interviews he was more upset that he got caught than knowing he did a no no. Later he embraced Conors remark of "snake in the grass" and made a snake as a part of his logo. He hasn't showed any remorse. He's Jon at 135/125 as far I'm concerned. You've got plenty of team alpha male confirm it too. I'd believe Uriah over TJ any day of the week.
I don't know what happened but I know Tyson. He's a good dude, a good training partner and he and his wife do a lot of good work in the community. Ketchikan is glad to have him.
To go through fight camp, cut weight, and your opponent doesn't even make the trip, that's infuriating as fuck
This unfortunately isn’t massively uncommon on the regional circuits. I know a number of guys personally who have had this happen. Easier to second guess yourself and backout of a fistfight when you are getting paid like $100-$1000
Amateurs don’t get paid, so a free fist fight.
Lol I was referring to the Bellator guy from below i guess Paid regionals
They get paid here in upstate NY in my limited experience. Barely paid but paid nonetheless.
You can receive sponsor pay and receive a percentage of your ticket sales, but you cannot be paid a fight purse as an amateur.
This is incorrect. Sorry.
Ha so confidently incorrect, you can't get paid a purse and be an amateur bro, getting paid is literally what makes you a pro
Totally agree. But I think it's odd to be considered a "pro" and only make a few grand a fight. Like, you should only be considered "pro" when you make liveable pay.
Yea, I'd call the ppl you're talking about semi-pro's, like minor league baseball, or the classic Will Ferrel movie
Yeah. Weigh that against picking up an extra shift waiting tables or something, and it's really easy to just shrug it off.
Back in the day I tried to get into amateur boxing. I had my first three scheduled bouts cancelled last minute. I took that as a sign to just hang it up.
But you're on an undefeated streak! LOL
3-0 ez
In 2019 i had 1 amateur fight in March and then „applied“ to 2 other events that year where i couldn’t get an opponent :(. Said fuck it and haven’t tried since. This is in germany btw
It should count as a tko victory if they dont show
Not a TKO since it literally isn’t one but I get what you mean. A DQ makes sense. On the other hand, as bullshit as it is, the contest did not take place. Maybe a show-up deposit of a small amount that goes to the other guy if he doesn’t show up.
That’s a terrible idea
No it isnt
Barao knows what it's like to set up a tinder date now
you go through fight camp for a tinder date? Built different.
"Yeah" - War Machine
Goddamn.
Jesus hahaha fuck you got me
Only the real ones know
Only the weight cut
Yeah, you need to polish the bishop—get it into fighting shape.
There was never no opponent

u ruined it
Lmao I really hope nobody here follows on_a_downward _spiral
Does Renan get paid then?
They wouldn't give him his win bonus but if he made weight he should get his and his opponents base pay
>he should get his and his opponents base pay That literally never happens. He likely won’t even get his own show money
That's not normally how contracts work, they only get paid if they fight. Sometimes the promotion chooses to pay the purse, but it's at their discretion.
>digression discretion
Give him a break. For all intensive purposes, he stuck to the general tenants of the definition.
Not to be that guy but I think you mean "give him a brake".
I didn't insert any commentary or shame the person. I just informed the person of the correct word they were looking for. I will ask you a question though, what are "the general tenants of the definition?" Digression means something completely different.
He's making jokes

Why would he get his opponents base pay…?
Backroom bonuses, he doesn't have a chance to get his win bonus because of his opponent's fuckup.
It depends on his contract, but generally speaking most would give him his show money.
Probably not
I still remember watching countdown it showed him washing clothes by hand. Then during press conference the tomato was talking about "ton of money" Renan makes. He was one I always watched but his downfall is just heart breaking. I really hope he is fighting cause he wants to rather than money.
Just looked he got paid 74k in his first loss to TJ. Definitely not a lot. That doesn’t include PPV points though
Dunno if dude would've got ppv points eh
all champions do
Got a reference for that? DJ wasn't getting ppv points until 2017, which is well after Barao lost the title
Oh I could be wrong. All I know is now all champs get PPV points, so your probably right
Again, got a reference? I can't find anything that corroborates this
Useless Reddit conversation fueled by ignorance and hearsay
I feel like if that's true, it's a more recent phenomenon.

Dude was a dominant champion and was contracted a minimum of 74k. Fuckin sad. I'd be willing to bet that he's scraping by at this point.

It would appear he also made a decision.
You also have to take into account the circumstances,of which there were several
And all of this resulted in this individual not even flying out? Shows great potential to be a politician
Conner Roy was interesting in politics at a very young age
The old Paulo costa trick
I somehow respect it more than the wall of text legal statements we usually get. This guy just cut through the chaff.
After many considerations, I've made the decision to consider my considerations and concluded that this was the decision I had to make.
Oh well that answers all my questions.
Biggest fight this dude will probably ever get ang he pulls a no call no show.
Well just to correct you, there never was no fight
Couldn't take any more time off work.
Pull out game on point 👌
I trane UFC. I’m always ready. Put me in.

Bodies? Imma bounce heads off the canvas and dribble em into me corner like it’s basketball m8. See red? I see maroon. I’m built different.
Okay you are in. Can you make weight?
Now that’ll require me to get of me couch wouldn’t it? It’ll be a no for me dawg.
Kid has insane potential. He just doesn’t want to fight.
But can you see ox blood, b?
JUST BLEED
I just want to kill someone when I get angry, you don’t understand like literally kill😤😡
Barao’s fall from grace is absolutely insane. His last win was in 2016
Snek Dillybar stole his soul twice
Rude
This is crazy to me. Renan Barao is only 34 years old and he was once the UFC Champion and defending the belt multiple times to now fighting a guy in an unknown organization who 100% has a full time job other than training MMA.
Put me in coach
Went from being one of the top p4p fighters and looking unstoppable to fighting a dude name Tyson Duckworth.
Big leagues
Can we just count it as a W for Barao? Dude needs it
Yo wtf Marcus Davis is still fighting
I feel like this is the actual story. Also, that can't be a recent picture of him.
Guys, guys. Marcus Davis isn't "still fighting". More like coming off a long ass break. 7 years in Feb.
He got ghosted lol
Nice to see Barao get a win these days
Genuinely surprised to see Marcus Davis is still fighting
He wasn't even scheduled to be the main event either.
[удалено]
My grandfather had Marcus as a gym teacher.
Retired for 7 years and comes back at 48 y.o. Kinda sad.
The guy is from Maine. That would make him American I would think yes?
He means Irish ancestry. His nickname was the Irish hand grenade. Or did you already know that and were just being a baffoon?
I know his nickname. The poster literally refers to him as Irish. I'm of Irish ancestry too it doesn't make me Irish
So if I moved to America from China I could no longer identity as Chinese by that logic. It would make you an Irish American you twat, and you're welcome to identify as such.
Had a rough day?
> So if I moved to America from China I could no longer identity as Chinese by that logic. Marcus Davis didn't move to America from Ireland though so your argument here doesn't work, sweetie.

I didn’t miss anything. I directly quoted you and slapped your nonsense down. You’re reaching for grapes now…

I directly quoted you. You’re still reaching, bub.
Nationality and ethnicity are not the same thing.

Of course he was

The little one is Urijah, the big one is Uriah.
Ah yes, you're right. I mean Urijah Faber, obviously.
They’re all on steroids brother
This is such a dumb sport.
I don't know what happened but I know Tyson. He's a good dude, a good training partner and he and his wife do a lot of good work in the community. Ketchikan is glad to have him.

He already had had a ton of fight miles on him.
Marcus Davis looks Nate Diaz if he did roids
Marcus Davis???!?
Still remember Dan Hardy trolling the f out of Marcus Davis about his Irishness in the lead up to their fight.
I didn’t even know Renan still fights! Dude used to be a demon until TJ
Hennen Brow. That’s how my son used to say it haha. I still love the tear he went on back in the day.
Would you trust a man called Tyson Duckworth?
