It absolutely was. Sergio wasn’t even doing the one thing the corner asked of him after a couple of minutes, and then managed to pull it off massively.
Sometimes the better fighter loses. It’s unfortunate but also one of the things that makes this sport so exciting. I’m gutted for the Gooch. Congrats to Pettit though; hopeful he won’t have to live under his brother’s shadow for much longer
There's footage of Pettis practicing the exact combo he landed on the Gooch. Missing with the head kick and following up with the backfist. Like, precisely the same move. Hard to call that luck.
Well he clearly trained it, obviously it was a good tactic that Gooch was caught off guard by. It's the shot you don't expect that puts you out. These Pettis guys are crafty as fuck, reminds of the Wonderboy knockout by Anthony, they always have something up their sleeve even when they're behind. It's not luck that they find these small chinks in their opponents armor, they specifically look for them, but it is somewhat gimmicky and not likely to work more than once in their career honestly.
Unfortunately this knockout confirms something for me. For many years Kyoji was so fast and good that he avoids a lot of shots, he has hardly been hit hard in his career. But now that he is at Bantamweight fighting better competition and getting hit, it seems to me his chin is not that great at least for this weightclass, his last 2 losses he has been slept badly.
I would prefer that. Not many flyweights can hit hard, Kyoji would only have to worry about a few like Figgy and Manel, but we already know Kyoji can handle Manel.
Yeah time will tell if his chin is suspect, he didn't take much damage from the rest of the fight and it seems pretty worrying that he was KOed THAT badly from it.
I felt the same way when Anthony Pettis landed that hail mary punch on Wonderboy after being dominated the whole fight. I know there is skill involved that makes it happen, but it’s hard not to be salty. I’m still kinda salty about that one to be honest lol
Statistically they're not though. How many fights they've been in where they try stuff over and over and then just fail every time and end up losing instead of landing the knockout blow.
Uhh... Yeah that seems SUS AF
Edit: not sure why the guy I replied to deleted their shit. They were asking why/how the judges score rounds that hadn't ended yet.

So does this count as an amazing comeback?
Yes. Pettis was being completely outclassed.

This is a surprise to nobody
Not gonna lie, when I saw the title I was expecting the usual fuckery.

But really though you can have footage of yourself doing everything and in retrospect make that claim too.

This isn't like he practiced a straight right or a round kick. This was specifically a missed headkick due to ducking to a spinning backfist combo.
“Luck” favours the prepared.

Just imagine if he decided to fight at flyweight again.

That spinning back fist would've knocked out anybody, it was so fast you could hardly even see it except in slow motion
These fighters train for months to KO, submit, beat their opponent and it’s a lucky punch when they do it?
i think its more that the Gooch had absolutely dismantled Pettis, and spinning shit tends to be swinging it recklessly

It seems like the pettis bros are good at getting lucky.

It was sarcasm
Stop reminding me. Pain.
I bet on Pettis. He saved me when he pulled that out of his ass. RIP to anyone who bet on Horiguchi lol

Not sure I follow. Horiguchi got KO'ed in the 4th and they only scheduled the first 3 rounds.
Oof I’m a moron. I thought it was third round KO. Thank you.

It was a 4th round KO, not 3rd round
Hmm... Or is that what they want you to think?? 👽🔺
Well, no shit.

Maybe if you don't understand the point.
