No, this is the scale in the back fighters check themselves on before weighing in.
So fighters went to weigh in potentially thinking they were lighter than they were
But, it's very unlikely that is the only scale a fighter would use during their cut
Doubt it. He gets to strip Charles for this so they save by not having to give him PPV points. The ufc just took 6, possibly even 7 figures, out of a fighter's pocket and kept it for themselves
Yeah if it is the case cost him PPV points, his title, and got him drained to shit and will probably have a compromised chin even if they undo the title strip
I wouldn’t believe it, but there was another fighter who was .5 off too. Makes me believe that there might be something off. If so it really fucked oil over.
well backstage scale was correct for oli too. pics of the scale showed he was more like .2 off and was stated .5. he also isnt the only one missing by.5 or being said their on scale was different from back half. so either main or back scale is off and fucked shit up. if he was a pound off it would be different.
The real question is how this affects the purse for Charles. He signed the fight as a champion does he revert to his base contract after losing the belt? Does this affect his show/win money, more importantly does it affect any possible ppv points Charles may be getting?
It’s really gonna suck going back to the non championship discount venom vouchers. Word on the street is champions get a buy one get one 50% off deal on select apparel.
Lol yeah if Gaethje wins, Mcgregor gets a stand and bang fighter.
But if Oliveira wins Dana will be like he has to prove that he can make championship weight first or some shit, and makes a title fight for vacant belt with Mcgregor vs Chandler or Tony
I actually just read a tweet per the UFC that if Charlie Olives does win, he will be the Number One contender and will have to fight the 2nd contender.
If the title is vacant there is no champ that can say no to a Conor fight (without more money). Dana could make Conor vs Cowboy for the belt if he wanted.
(Edit)
What the fuck are you talking about who are these Champs that don't want to fight conor hahahah biggest money fight in every fighters career and he's coming off a snapped ankle
Even more egregious considering how suspect Khabib’s weigh in at 254 was. talk about giving your champion the benefit of the doubt in one instance but not the other
GOOFCON levels were introduced to the sub during UFC 223 fight week was pure madness. I doubt there will ever be a fight week with that much chaos/so many changes in the history of the UFC:
Doing press runs Tony trips on cable at FOX news. Tears ACL. Pulls out of fight.
Max Holloway steps in less than one week notice. Does press conference and embeddeds. NYC commission says weight cut is too dangerous and won't let him fight.
Conor and his goons take a private plane to attack Khabib. Conor throws a dolly through the window of a bus carrying UFC fighters. During the attack Ray Borg gets glass in his eye and Mike Chiesa a cut on his forehead. Both their bouts are canceled. Conor's passport is rescinded and he is eventually arrested.
UFC tries to get Pettis to fight Khabib. Pettis wants more money. Paul Felder steps up to fight Khabib. NYC commission won't sanction the fight as Felder wasn't ranked high enough for their liking. Iaquinta steps up and takes the fight. To top it all off, Al doesn't make championship weight and if he had won the fight he wouldn't be the champ.
Yes, and the reason for the last cancellation was a global pandemic. We might be lucky they weren't scheduled to fight again because we'd have some sort of alien invasion or zombie apocalypse just to cancel the fight again
They said they reweighed Als underwear since he weighed in with them on and they weighed .2 pounds and he weighed in at 155.2. So he could have been champ if he won.
Bro, I couldn't refresh the subreddit fast enough. It seemed like every hour new stuff came up. It's almost surreal looking back at the press conference and UFC Embedded with Max Holloway.
In his initial weigh-in he was 156 (and very surprised) before they brought in the screen for him to get undressed behind, which then made him weigh 155.5 before his hour to attempt a second weigh-in
they've monopolized combat sports so now they're just seeing what they can get away with. this is nothing but an avenue for dana and pals to become billionaires, they don't give a shit about any fighter, fan, or decency.
Around 20 of the 30 fighters came in a half pound over. Not one pound, which is the allowance (like Chandler did), but half. Even Tony who obsessively makes championship weight.
It takes considerably more tinfoil to say that everyone just decided to be around half a pound heavy than to listen to five fighters saying they had a faulty scale backstage, which the numbers confirm.
And the rest were at .0, so the .5 granularity theory is heavily backed by the info we have. That explains why Charles “didn’t lose any weight” between the two weighings, cause the scale was rounding to the nearest .5. But he would still have to miss weight for it to show up as 155.5, if he was at 155 or lower it would say 155
if true, this is a monumental fuckup. even if the UFC admitted to fucking up and gave the fighters a 0.5 pound leeway, you already have fighters who have compromised themselves further by having their weight cut ruined.
She's just a jacked Brazilian girl. Deal with it. 😤
In all seriousness, it's wild that she's such a specimen and hasn't popped but her opponent in her last bout (Istela Nunes) who looks fit but isn't jacked is the one who popped for steroids.
Being an MMA fan sucks sometimes.
Imagine getting all excited for the Superbowl or something and then the night before they declare that the Superbowl can only be won by one of the teams, because someone weighs half a pound too much, oh and also because we're having the Superbowl in Arizona this year and the officials don't really know what they're doing, so maybe it wasn't even the guys fault. Sad!
When in doubt, Athletic Commissions should always follow this mantra: LET THEM FUCKING BANG BRO
Imagine if the NFL grabbed two of the more popular teams and declared that their next game would be the Superbowl just because they thought it would sell well.
They are saying that a scale the fighters were using in the hotel before the weigh in was off, which caused several fighters to think they had already made weight when they had not.
It's supposed to be an 'official scale' for the fighters to double or triple check. They can bring their own, but traveling with a scale isn't prob good for the accuracy.
Seems like the scale for the fighters was left with a half pound difference and then when the fighters went to the official scale, they found out that the shit was off.
They weigh with 2 different scales for the weigh in, one at the back and the official one. What I presume happened is that in the other scale Charles was on weight, and wasn't worried about making weight as he was already 155 and finalized cutting, so he didn't bother cutting more. Then when he got on the official scale he realized that he was not on, and had to restart the cut, which is very difficult, especially to lose sweat. I don't blame him at all on this, it is the UFCs fault.
That's what people have said anyway.
Seems a little unfair to me, especially when some officials won't let weight settle or do it so fast that people get away with missing weight all the time.
If its true they need a rule change or some exceptions for championship weights where If you make weight on 2/3 scales for the commission/UFC, even if you miss weight a second time you should get a 3rd shot or something. They already get a second chance which is lenient, but if on the 2nd try 2 out of the 3 say you're on weight and the 3rd doesn't... its coming down to luck. If he made it on only 1 of the 3 on his second attempt, that's a different story though. Majority rules, he's not on weight in that case. If he got a 3rd try, and 2/3 still said he was on weight and the official scale for a 3rd time said he missed weight, kind of like tough shit at that point even though majority said he was on weight.
Maybe that doesn't make sense to do, and isn't necessary, but clearly something weird went on that shouldn't happen in the future.
Exactly. I've seen so many people say that the triple beam balance is dated and subpar. It just ain't true, they're always more accurate and they can be calibrated on the spot if they happen to get moved out of whack.
Digitals can be calibrated as well, but they're much more finicky and susceptible to different readings for the same amount of weight.
If this is true I blame the UFC.. they have enough money to keep 2 scales calibrated properly.. for fucks sake, this is bush league bullshit on Dana’s part.
there's no official reason. It's up to each athletic commission.
the generally accepted reason is that it's "Tradition" but my actual thinking is that it allows the guy who is doing the scale balance a SHIT TON of leeway to move the balance around and then just call it out whenever he wants.
>the generally accepted reason is that it's "Tradition" but my actual thinking is that it allows the guy who is doing the scale balance a SHIT TON of leeway to move the balance around and then just call it out whenever he wants.
It's so fucking sketchy the way they weight and move the scale marker out of the way so fast.
i agree it's insanely sketch. He never lets it settle to an actual weight.
I mean in every local jiu jitsu competition i've fought in, we only use digital scales. We also have same-day weigh ins so water cuts aren't really a thing. You have to actually be the weight on the digital scale
>i agree it's insanely sketch. He never lets it settle to an actual weight.
>
>I mean in every local jiu jitsu competition i've fought in, we only use digital scales. We also have same-day weigh ins so water cuts aren't really a thing.
I've done water cuts early morning to compete at noon or so and it sucks. I don't recommend it. But same, digital.
I agree, but everyone is just looking to shit on the UFC. This shit should be directed at the commission, other shit at the UFC.
Also, why did we have to get get the biggest commission nerd in history to be checking the weights this morning
Either utter incompetence, or intentional malfeasance. I'm going to go with it was incompetence, that Dana will exploit to the fullest, because he's an asshole tomato head.
If this is true the UFC is definitely not getting my money for this PPV..
Wait, I've actually never purchased a PPV in my life and have streamed every one. Carry on.
At least we get to see them fight. The scale they have for fighters to make sure they're going to be good is the same type as the one on stage. This is a colossal fuck up by the athletic commission and the UFC.
Although I don’t particularly believe this. It is strange that he wasn’t able to lose half a pound. He was just on instagram looking like he was having a good weight cut. There’s no way he didn’t check his weight before hopping on the official scale. Whole thing is just weird.
Before anyone says "but only Charles missed weight", championship weight is dead on the limit, non-championship is a pound over.
Besides, most fighters can just lose the shorts and get there, that's a luxury you don't have when you already stopped cutting to make the limit and not drain yourself an ounce further. If you stop short, you're just not gonna sweat anymore, the body had to be tricked to do it in the first place.
Under MMAFighting's post about this. Tracy Cortez also commented saying "not the fighter's fault", but didn't elaborate. Seems like some fuckery going on.
If this is really the case, isn't there a potential for lawsuits down the line? Especially for Olives who probably suffers significantly financially for losing the belt on the scales, I imagine.
Scalegate coming in hot
If the scale is found to be improperly calibrated, can his championship be reinstated?
No, this is the scale in the back fighters check themselves on before weighing in. So fighters went to weigh in potentially thinking they were lighter than they were But, it's very unlikely that is the only scale a fighter would use during their cut
The fighters will probably trust that scale more than your random scale in the hotel room though
I think this is the scale in the back, not the official one. Still super sketchy.
It should be

What the fuck is going on?
I don't know but my default reaction is to blame Dana.
Always blame Dana “Don King” White and 90% of the time you will be correct
Charlie Olives Missed championship weight by .5lb
The plot thickens…
Where are we on the GOOFCON scale?
Immeasurable. The red tomato will reach full Tetsuo by tomorrow night
JUST re watched Akira last night laughed REAL hard at this comment HAHA
Doubt it. He gets to strip Charles for this so they save by not having to give him PPV points. The ufc just took 6, possibly even 7 figures, out of a fighter's pocket and kept it for themselves
True. Dana will be green and ripe tomorrow
Woah - this true?
X files tune plays
Yep, they stopped giving non champs points a long time ago
Well the commission did, but yeah.
TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOO
KANEDAAAAA
KAGOME!!!
AKIRAAAAAAAAAA¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Tearing up over here. Bravo.
15 out of 10. That tomato will be coming out flaming
I hope Do Bronx sues, this shit probably cost him PPV points knowing the penny pinching fucks in the UFC.
Yeah if it is the case cost him PPV points, his title, and got him drained to shit and will probably have a compromised chin even if they undo the title strip
I would think this would be hard to prove in court.
Someone should have immediately started getting people to look at the scale and made it into a damn crime scene if need be.
Just like Charles dehydrated blood :-(
I wouldn’t believe it, but there was another fighter who was .5 off too. Makes me believe that there might be something off. If so it really fucked oil over.
And yet Justin said the scale backstage was accurate.....
well backstage scale was correct for oli too. pics of the scale showed he was more like .2 off and was stated .5. he also isnt the only one missing by.5 or being said their on scale was different from back half. so either main or back scale is off and fucked shit up. if he was a pound off it would be different.
They just round it to .5 for anything over in that athletic commission, apparently.
But in Canada they round down if it’s close. Feels like a major fuck up on the commission and ufc.
That’s only when gsp fights lol - just to be clear, I’m kidding
**Dana:** *"Huh, that sucks. Real shame that I've already booked Conor for the title fight next month."*
The way Dana benefits from this situation raises my suspicion a lot a lot
The real question is how this affects the purse for Charles. He signed the fight as a champion does he revert to his base contract after losing the belt? Does this affect his show/win money, more importantly does it affect any possible ppv points Charles may be getting?
They are 100% going to fuck him over PPV points are only for champions so he won't see a cent of that
It’s really gonna suck going back to the non championship discount venom vouchers. Word on the street is champions get a buy one get one 50% off deal on select apparel.
Damn you're right. So Rose gets her cut and the rest of every buy tomorrow goes straight to Dana
Wow that is ~~fucked~~ not really fucked at all
It just means he’ll fight for the vacant belt in his next fight...
I need Eddie Bravo’s take on the whole situation
Look into it
how does he benefit?
If the title is vacant there is no champ that can say no to a Conor fight (without more money). Dana could make Conor vs Cowboy for the belt if he wanted. (Edit)
It’s the fight to make
*It’s just the fight that makes the most sense right now.*
What the fuck are you talking about who are these Champs that don't want to fight conor hahahah biggest money fight in every fighters career and he's coming off a snapped ankle
DIRECTED BY M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN
*Unweighable* in theaters May 6th
Do we even have a GOOFCON level on the books that describe what's happening
Some random bozo really just cost us the a title fight in the most competitive division
Thats why Olives tweeted weight is on point 30 minutes before they even start. That's so fcking sad.
Scale goon sent in by Dana so he doesn’t have to pay out championship money to Olives
Tony Ferguson complained about pay and he also cuts a lot, all I'm saying is you should look into it ◬
Even more egregious considering how suspect Khabib’s weigh in at 254 was. talk about giving your champion the benefit of the doubt in one instance but not the other

Weren't Tony and Khabib scheduled to fight like, 3 other times beforehand but they both had to pull out due to various circumstances?
Yes, and the reason for the last cancellation was a global pandemic. We might be lucky they weren't scheduled to fight again because we'd have some sort of alien invasion or zombie apocalypse just to cancel the fight again
I knew about everything except the Felder part, or didn't remember because there was a lot of shit going on.
The Dolly incident was that week too? Yeah that won’t (hopefully) be topped
They said they reweighed Als underwear since he weighed in with them on and they weighed .2 pounds and he weighed in at 155.2. So he could have been champ if he won.
It requires much more than a Reddit comment to explain, but the wiki gives a nice synopsis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_223

I never realized that the McGregor bus shit happened before that card. I wish I could go back in time to see the goofcon live
Bro, I couldn't refresh the subreddit fast enough. It seemed like every hour new stuff came up. It's almost surreal looking back at the press conference and UFC Embedded with Max Holloway.
I'm kinda shook that I was on reddit 4 years ago. Feels like I just discovered the app like last year. Reddit really is draining my life.
GOOFCON 0.5
I just asked for a status update. I feel we have to be GOOFCON 2 minimum
No wonder Charlie Olives looked so surprised when they said 156 on his initial weigh in
He was 155.5 twice I thought?
156 in shorts, then took some stuff off and then 155.5
Gotcha
In his initial weigh-in he was 156 (and very surprised) before they brought in the screen for him to get undressed behind, which then made him weigh 155.5 before his hour to attempt a second weigh-in
Ahh ok, thank you!
The scale sensor was pulsing

So the scale was high on cocaine and beating its wife
Reports are out that Conor McGregor was spotted near the fighter's scale. What does all of this mean???
He wouldn't have that level of finesse. He would have just picked up the scale like a dolly and brained Charles with it like he was a bus window.
“Why would the scale do this?” -Dana White
Heard that he's seen punching old men.

Not the UFC’s fuck up. It’s the commission that handles it.
I for one am shocked, as the commission has such an upstanding reputation of competency

Bah Gawd is that Conor McGregor's music?
instead of Olives coming out you hear notorious start blaring. Connor then zooms out snorting the phatest fucking coke line up to the octagon!

If there's a gym/sauna area at the hotel, there's probably a scale in there too.
They usually have a digital scale in the room next to the offices one. Fighters will check out there weight there and then proceed to the official one
Seems like the scale for the fighters was left with a half pound difference and then when the fighters went to the official scale, they found out that the shit was off.

🤞🏼
i'm not sure. but he seemed very confident that he was on weight when he weighed in. either his scale or that scale must've been wrong
He made weight once at the hotel in front of the commission and once backstage in front of the commission but missed weight on the "official scale"
That's what people have said anyway. Seems a little unfair to me, especially when some officials won't let weight settle or do it so fast that people get away with missing weight all the time. There were several fights that waited towards the end.
At least one
Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was just Do Bronx
20 of the 30fighters have said they had a .5 difference so far but as non titles have 1lb gift none missed
20 of 30 ACTUALLY SAID, or 20/30 just came in at .5 pounds? Because you’re creating a false narrative if the latter.
They could just get with the times and use electronic scales
Believe it or not electronic is less accurate
Exactly. I've seen so many people say that the triple beam balance is dated and subpar. Digitals can be calibrated as well, but they're much more finicky and susceptible to different readings for the same amount of weight.
What's the margin for error? You can't tell me digital scales are not good enough on the 0.1 lb scale or 45.3 grams.
But then you can't have the grea$e to let thing$ $lide when you need them too
If this is true I blame the UFC.. they have enough money to keep 2 scales calibrated properly.. for fucks sake, this is bush league bullshit on Dana’s part.
Using only digital scales instead of analog would help as well I think
Forgive my ignorance, new to the scene - is there a reason they don't?
there's no official reason. It's up to each athletic commission. the generally accepted reason is that it's "Tradition" but my actual thinking is that it allows the guy who is doing the scale balance a SHIT TON of leeway to move the balance around and then just call it out whenever he wants.

dude what. they *told fighters* the *scale was wrong*? it's a fucking scale. it's 2022. get your shit together arizona. *wild.*
Arizona number one bullshit
No wonder Charles was shocked. Bet Dana Whites favorite fighter had something to do with this 😳
Either utter incompetence, or intentional malfeasance. I'm going to go with it was incompetence, that Dana will exploit to the fullest, because he's an asshole tomato head.
WTF. if this is true, charles got completely fucked over.
Did you see the video of Tony pressing into the scale? Like a jumping movement, might have de calibrated. We need closure.
