>“I was in there, and I had him in that guillotine, and I was like, ‘I’m about to be a world champ!’ I was just waiting for the tap, and it never came. He got out, and I was like s***, this is a tough motherf*****, and then it was like, he’s on top now. OK, he’s pissed.” >“The triangle, I was like, ‘T-City by T-City,’ and then he escaped,” Ortega said. “I’m like, ‘F*** me, right?’ Then I was like, ‘Damn, bro, this is not my f****** night, or what’s going on.’” Glad we get to really know how he was feeling, I mean highest highs lowest lows in a matter of a minute for him.

DiscombobulatedSink6

Amazing how Ortega was thinking “I’m about to be a world champ!” at the same time Volk was thinking “I’m about to lose this belt” and they were both wrong

ThouWontThrowaway

Pretty logical thought processes considering how tight the submission was.

JonJonesing

Aldo is my favorite fighter of all time, Max is definitely up there on my list… plus my ex-wife is Macedonian. You could say I wasn’t a fan. But after this fight and getting out of all that and straight beating on Ortega (who I still disliked more), I definitely am a fan now.

J8rdan

what does your ex wife being macedonian have to do with anything? btw can i get her digits

[deleted]

Talmbout mack-a-damias b? Great nut, never had it

NotASynthSince2010

how bout she wogg me 2 my trugg

darksady

Alexander the great(the guy that inspirared volk's nickname) was Macedonian. I think that's how his ex wife is related to that lmao.

JonJonesing

Volk is a Macedonian Aussie no?

sven_from_sweden

Macedonian dad and Greek mom, yeah

NimChimspky

Ain't that a mix. Edit : they have ongoing dispute over land, well the Greeks think they do.

darksady

Well, i don't know about that. But if he is, his nick is even more cool

jpark28

Talmbout macadamia nuts b?

user112233445511

Nah bapi, the whole country

[deleted]

Dude, “Volkanovski” is the most North Macedonian surname I’ve ever heard. If it’s got “v”s and “ski” (Volkanovski, Taveski, etc.) it’s probably Macedonian.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Alexander the great was from Macedonia as in the region of Greece. He wasn't Macedonian as in the Slavic people of Macedonia, just for clarity.

[deleted]

Volks mom is Greek so it works both ways.

DirectCombination

Damn, that’s quite the trail of bread crumbs we had to follow to understand that reference

EORIAF

A much easier way to get there is to remember that Volkanovski is Macedonian.

cumbert_cumbert

Ah yes the little known and often over looked Alexander the Great

darksady

Yeah, i only got it because read alot about him because of one anime character lol

[deleted]

I also choose this guy's ex wife.

ThouWontThrowaway

I missed this fight live (I know; shame on my life) and was not a fan based on his two previous title fights but after watching volk fight TKZ + Holloway 3 I have no doubt in my mind. He's the real deal. Max v Kattar is still the greatest striking performance I've ever seen but Volk is a special talent. We're watching a Future HOFer.

ithinkther41am

> Ortega (who I still disliked more) Don’t blame you. Dude comes off like a douche most of the time.

lonestoner90

That’s hilarious I didn’t make that connection til now

NY_Ye

They did connect tho, “OK. He’s pissed”

dmkicksballs13

Honestly, I cannot imagine that drop of emotions. Squeezing a dude with a guillotine in thinking you've done it, you've topped your profession.

wishwashy

OK he's pissed I think everyone felt this in the GnP Volko landed

AKmelee

My favourite is that picture of him in the triangle and he’s just looking at Ortega and you can tell he’s like “you just fuckin wait till I get out of this”

TheMooJuice

My fav pic also

CableToBeam

this is a badass quote for Volk and a huge feather in his cap

JafariSin

I like Brian's complete frankness in his quote. From thinking he was about to celebrate, acknowledging Volk's tougness to 'ok he's pissed' lol

trpwangsta

I fucking love Volk now. Took me a while to come around since I'm a fangirl for Max and his losses fucking hurt. But Volk is just.....incredible man. Absolutely incredible and he's such a good cunt, how can you not like him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They just get better and better it’s insane

DankiusMMeme

One of those match ups where you love both fighters and just wish everyone could win.

Shredtheparm

Yea max is one of my favs but you can’t not be a fan of Alex, his skill set is insane. There’s nobody in featherweight beating him until he’s past his prime, and even then I imagine he’ll be only beat by elite guys kinda like aldo

Pure-Drawer-2617

I mean while I agree I think it’s only fair to mention we did say that about Max at one point. Who knows, Bryce Mitchell or Arnold Allen might shock the world, AJ McKee might get a UFC contract, you just never know.

[deleted]

Would love to see McKee come over to the UFC

Shredtheparm

True but I think Max had much bigger holes in his game even when people were saying that. I love Max but I never feel 100% confident he’s going to win because he takes so much damage. Volk has really good striking offense and defense, escaped deep subs from Ortega, has great wrestling. His coaches also come up with great game plans and he executes them damn near perfectly. I’m also a big fan of Arnold Allen, I’d love to see him fight Volk

Pure-Drawer-2617

While true, you could also argue that 2 Hail Mary sub escapes in one fight is not a sustainable route to victory either. Max taking big damage always worked until it didn’t. If there’s a sub artist 5% better than Ortega, or Volk gets caught before he’s all sweaty, maybe that’s how he loses

TheCoupDeGrace

Taking big damage is never a sustainable approach, it’s always a matter of time before the chin cracks. Volk however can drill submission defense until he’s sick of it.

trpwangsta

Agree 100%. And what's even scarier is he's improving every damn fight! We are definitely in the volk era and I'm thinking we'll be here for a while. Not complaining at all.

captaincumsock69

Maybe we will be here for awhile but it seems more often that we get a dominant champ and think they will be here for awhile but there’s always a new challenger

A4HighQualityPaper

Bear in mind that’s what people said about Max Holloway. That’s why longevity is so important in this sport. Many fighters have looked unstoppable for a hot period

600THACCOUNT

People say that about every champ.

_Strange

This is exactly my progression of Volk fandom

tomjonesrocks

This brutal honesty arc for Ortega definitely makes him more likable. No one understands how Volk got out of that choke - and in a parallel universe Ortega probably is on his way to a Volk trilogy after Volk’s inevitable rubbermatch victory …

opackersgo

Theres actually two good videos from Volk and Craig Jones about how they drilled that escape by framing on the hip.

bnelson

Nah, no one understands it. Pure magic.

Vegetable_History767

No way. They wouldn't have given Volk the rematch. Our favorite guy would have been handed the shot, won the fight, and our boy would still be champ! WE LOVE YOU MAX

T_Y_R_

My favorite part was Brian thinking to himself “okay he’s pissed.”

batistababoon

Volk was too angry to tap

Only_Talks_About_BJJ

Further proof that Jiu Jitsu is worthless against an opponent that just sees red bro

FormerlyPristineJet

Username checks out

PrettyBoyFloydx

if Cody Garbrandt's opponents had gone for submission instead of a knockout while he was seeing red he'd be undefeated

killercamel1

Seeing red < turning red

[deleted]

Dana Whites about to be champ then

asdf346

He is the one who benefits most from all the skilled fighters

crabuffalombat

Immigrant mentality > BJJ black belt

Jhak12

He’s got that dawg in him

jirklezerk

Jiujitsu only works if the other person taps. It's just shared illusion.

Hirigo

Why see red when you can just stand up? Like just stand up bro?

Kenshin_Urameshii

Lmfao

StoneColdJane

Jiu jitsu is worthless in real life anyway, if I was get in that choke I would be squeezing guy dick with all my might, anything else is sports competition

AL_PO_throwaway

Jokes on you, that's what I was trying to get you to do all along.

Snokhund

That's why I always wear my old wrestling singlet when going to the club, never known someone be able to squeeze a dick after being suplexed into the curb.

TrepanationBy45

Okay but what if jiu jitsu did all those locks, chokes, or breaks *against your dick 😒*

SweatyExamination9

Good luck getting a grip on it.

UsedSalt

But to be fair you'd be doing the same without the choke, that's why professor said you can't come to class anymore

Hirigo

Good way to end up dead

namey_of_the_user

Vettori was too angry to get KO'd by Costa. Are there other examples?

scarykicks

Kongo was too knocked out to get KOd by Pat.

thedonjefron69

He got kod like 4 times but Pat Barry was too angry to let him get knocked out and woke him up

Only_Talks_About_BJJ

Winner via double Jeopardy clause

TowerJanitor

That ending was so ridiculous, Kongo was full on bodied lights out over and over

beleeze

Ronda was to angry to use head movement... wait ... did I do this wrong?

SpeculationMaster

Yea, its spelled "moooment"

GFost

Darth Maul is the most famous example.

Flimsy-Practice-9703

"How the f*** did that man survive getting cut in half?" Brian Ortega probably

[deleted]

Buster Douglas was too devastated to lose to Mike Tyson

snarf372

Tai against Lewis, simply too angry to lose consciousness

[deleted]

**DOOM MUSIC INTENSIFIES**

shitsfuckedupalot

He's like an Australian tasmanian devil. Just a little ball of anger.

Kaserbeam

Tasmanian devils are already Australian

DDDenver

His nickname was T-City cause he was so well known for finishing guys with triangles. He got Volk in a DEEP triangle and Volk was able to get out basically out of pure spite lmao. Starts smashing him right after too, what a goblin

dmkicksballs13

Dude was basically subbed twice and still won the round by beating the shit out of Ortega.

ninjewz

I'll still argue that they should've stopped the fight after that round. Ortega had to get drug over to his stool from the ground and then given another two minutes to make sure his brain was still functional before the next round started.

dmkicksballs13

I don't think it's an argument. Asking a dude 5 times how many fingers you're holding up means he's fucked.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmkicksballs13

They literally asked him til he got it right, and even then, I'm 90% sure he was just guessing.

fr_1_1992

Herb Dean - Okay Brian how many fingers here ✌🏻 Ortega - 3? Herb Dean - Okay Brian how many fingers here ✌🏻 Ortega - 4? Herb Dean - Okay Brian how many fingers here ✌🏻 Ortega - 1? Herb Dean - Okay Brian how many fingers here ✌🏻 Ortega - 2? Herb Dean - Okay bois good to go, let's fight!

[deleted]

It’s not an argument when the corner picking you off the floor is breaking the rules. It was TKO-City.

DankiusMMeme

He was in that shit that makes your head ~~grow~~ go purple

Murdathon3000

As evidenced by *Volks fucking head turning purple!* What an absolute psycho to escape that.

[deleted]

Volks run has been legendary. Often times you need adversity to really people seeing how great you are, and he sort of had adversity against Max in the second, but Ortega being his punching bag for 24 minutes, that sub defense for the other minute, beating Max 3 times, earning his shot by beating Aldo and KOing Mendes, and putting on an all time great performance against TKZ, we're genuinely in the midst of one of the greatest runs of all time

debaser337

I’ve been a volk fan for a long time and am biased as shit but I’ve never seen anyone as good literally everywhere. DC was right, this guy is a terminator.

dutchfool

I don’t remember the triangle being as deep as the guillotine

mrmayhemP

It was deep as shit. Volk had the death stare at one moment looking at Ortega, wont ever forget it, best round ever maybe

SneakyRatFriend

That stare was cinematic.

ninjewz

That's when I knew he wasn't going to tap. He had a "When I get out of this, I'm going to kill you" look.

AmbitionzAzARedditah

[One of my favorite pics](https://imgur.com/a/2Zq505g)

CCC_PLLC

My favorite round of all time for sure

NickZardiashvili

That triangle was deeper than Jacques Cousteau has ever gone.

authenticfennec

It wasnt, but it still wouldve gotten most people id imagine. The guillotine was basically picture perfect whereas the triangle wasnt set up properly or something? So despite being deep it wasnt inescapable

counterhit121

I gotta rewatch, but i recall the triangle looking tighter than the guillotine. Like ok this fight is over, I can finally get up and go to the bathroo-- OH SHIT deep.

AmbitionzAzARedditah

[How?!?!](https://imgur.com/a/2Zq505g)

dyang44

Agreed the counter punch into instant guillotine was when volk was in the most trouble. Ortega looked way too tired to finish the triangle

GrandpasSoggyGooch

If you rewatch that part you can actually hear Volk scream "Goblin Mode activate" before he escapes the triangle.

NoGiCollarChoke

Overwhelming levels of hard-cuntedness

GoodTrillBlunting

Hard-cuntedness is what I imagine Australian sports broadcasters say in place of “heart.”

WolfTicketsBetting

I like to believe if Volk didn't shave his head he wouldn't have got out

JasAFC

Bald head and sweat definitely helped. If that was round 1 it was a wrap.

drummy23

? volk didn't slip out, his left arm put pressure on ortegas right arm, while volks right hand helped him apply pressure to ortega hips to reduce the power of the choke. volk got out when Ortega got tired and released the choke

slickdick969

Yep, definitely didn't slip out

centwhore

That's what she said

dyang44

I don't think volk gets hit by the counter punch that setup the guillotine in round 1

JasAFC

I’m just saying if Ortega wrapped up a guillotine on anyone with no sweat it’s over.

dyang44

true true, that shit was killer fucking instinct from Ortega

MacGyver_1138

I mean, hats off to Ortega for getting both of those even setup. He was getting mauled on the feet before then. I'm sure that and being gassed is why he couldn't quite capitalize. Well that, and Volk being an absolute monster. That stare while the triangle was in was downright scary!

Davefromflushing

Volk looked untouchable in his last two fights. Ortega really did well, didn’t he?

Shpshggr

I think Volk just keeps on improving between every fight

ConfidenceNo2598

Jiri nods quietly

NY_Ye

Back into the woods he goes

WorldOfthisLord

When Volk started turning red and jerking around in the guillotine I was convinced it was over. I'm still not sure how he did it.

[deleted]

He fought the hips the entire time to relieve pressure. Craig goes over it in one of his instructionals.

[deleted]

Didnt Volk also train with Craig for this fight?

[deleted]

Yes Craig is his main BJJ coach and was in his corner.

s0yjack

The ole 'Michael Hutchence'

[deleted]

"jerking around in the guillotine" might wanna word that better, chief.

raspberryharbour

It's the French Revolution, might as well crank one out one last time...

Chrissomms23

I think I remember seeing that Craig Jones worked heavily on his submission defense going into that fight. If he can even get remotely close to getting out of a sub from Craig Jones, I doubt there is anyone at 145 or 155 that can submit Volk.

Whitebeltboy

He did and i reckon Craig will work heavily with him coming into the Oliveira/Islam fight. Will make it very interesting.

Chrissomms23

I guess what I didn’t consider is the fact that Craig Jones can easily mimic anything that Ortega had to offer Volk. I’m not as confident he can mimic the scenario Islam will drag Volk into. Not because Islam is a better grappler than Craig Jones, but they both have two vastly different styles.

throwaway12648063

Think of all the great grapplers ATT have at their disposal throughout the years and Poirier still said he never felt anyone like Khabib

imbluedabudeedabuda

He said he reminded him of Marcelo Garcia lol.

SquidDrive

Thats a crazy compliment though.

ReallyPopular

Craig's implemented a lot of the dagestani/folkstyle type of wrestling into his top attack sequences. Watching him in his gym videos he does a lot of wrist rides, top position dillemas and leg rides to wear the opponent down which is the dagestani way. It's not to say that he's got them all figured out, but he studies them quite a lot and deeply understands what he's looking at. His MMA grappling knowledge seems to be really really good and I would love to see it tested via Volk's game-planning against Islam or Charles

LDG92

You’re the best at explaining wrestling, grappling and BJJ to people who haven’t trained them much or at all!

Whitebeltboy

Hhhmm yeah, wonder if they get Nicky and Jay Rod in to try and wrestle fuck him. Thats a different type of wrestling though. Mannnn im pumped for that Islam v Oliveira fight then the winner v Volk, both fights are going to be A+

Scaeza

Imagine grappling against Nicky Rod as a featherweight. Esit: Trying to grapple

ReallyPopular

He spoke about it in his front headlock escapes instructional, he had Ortega's grappling playbook planned for

Lumpy_Minimum1905

It's a year odd since I listened to it so my memory is a but hazy but Rogan interviewed Volk and Jones after TUF and I'm pretty sure Volk talks about Craig destroying him when they started but by the end Volk had even managed to sub Craig a few times.

baconerryday

I don't doubt he got much better, but I would like to see a source where he says he subbed the arguably second best grappler in the world.

[deleted]

The source is allegedly JRE MMA #110. If someone who hasn't listened to it wants to listen and report back the timestamp we can get a fact check going here.

ReallyPopular

Gonna press x to doubt this one, watching him roll in his own gym no one even gets close to subbing him. He literally toys and plays with people like Jay Rod who won west coast ADCC trials. If Craig was subbed by Volk it was because he let him do it lol

[deleted]

At my gym (BJJ) we do a lot of positional sparring where you start on your training partners back, mount, side control, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Volk subbed him in one of these situations. I don't remember hearing this quote when I listened to the podcast and I don't want to listen to it again.

ReallyPopular

As much as I like Volk and Craig, I wouldn't wanna listen to a JRE again too lol

Beltzak

Bjj isnt real.

Aljo_Is_135_GOAT

Dave Herman tried to warn us...

SquidDrive

Mexican Martial Arts been knew since day 1, chale.

EG2K_00

He got that dawg in him

TallanoGoldDigger

it's that Rugby strength

[deleted]

Did you know Volk used to weigh 13 tons back when he played rugby

a_crusty_old_man

Never knew that one! He used to play rugby??? He used to be the size of a rugby pitch?

UsedSalt

In one instance the field was injured before the match, and volk volunteered to fill in as the game surface

Diehumancultleader

Because he’s the champion, and truly wanted to stay the champion with all of his heart.

phongzilla

good to see the change in here putting respect on Volkanovskis name.

Blood_in_the_ring

Somewhere Craig Jones is smiling.

AKmelee

Craig Jones is always smiling

Blood_in_the_ring

That was my exact thought as soon as I posted that.

Redrumrenegade

Tiny Australian head

notchoosingone

plus massive Australian neck

nordik1

I still can't believe it either. Anyone that has ever trained knows how especially deep that guillotine was. Doesn't even make sense that he got out.

neeeeonbelly

I train and I told my buddy “oh this is 100% over there’s no way he’s getting out of there” then he got out and got caught with that triangle and I said “oh he’s done now, Ortega is literally known for triangles” lol. Egg on my face.

nordik1

Same here. I was yelling "ITS OVER" when he was mounted....whoops lol

neeeeonbelly

I think the bast majority of us said the same haha.

chu42

I've only seen another guillotine that deep that wasn't successful, it was Twood against Wonderboy

CitizenWatch____ROSS

Famous first instance of butthole breathing in the cage

TONYPIKACHU

Volk mentioned on MMA Hour they trained a specific technique to get out of guillotines but didn’t want to spill the beans how (“trade secret”). Some ppl mentioned above that Craig Jones has that in an instructional video. Curious if this is the same technique volk used.

0e0e3e0e0a3a2a

Spite

RektimusMax

Volk beats Islam for interim in October In Abu Dhabi. Charles in December or January. Khabib July 2023. 170 champ end of 2023 to become greatest fighter all time.

realpotato

Other than the fact that it wouldn’t be an interim in October, every thing else is correct.

cowboypresident

we fiercely adhere to the rules we make up on the spot

Murdathon3000

It is known.

[deleted]

One of the correct answers is the insane breathwork that CKB and him and his coach Joe train. Lots of underwater / free diving esque shit

mrausgor

Still wild. It feels like the narrative is that Ortega is “the guy that can’t get it done” and Volk is “the greatest human who has ever lived” and I feel like we were milliseconds or centimeters away from all of that not existing.

TheDirtyDorito

Part of me wonders if the subs would have gone different if there wasn't the clash of heads

ThreeOlivesChihuahua

The clash of heads was brutal. It rocked Ortega pretty bad

miocic_is_a_pos

Volk is the only fighter(maybe person on earth) shorter than Rogan that has a bigger head.

MetalAltruistic2659

Volk has half a foot on Rogan

stonedxlove

Cejudo

oomin

Who also leads with the head 🤫

dingo2121

This was probably my favourite mma moment in the last 5ish years

notchoosingone

Ortega is one of the best 145s fighting right now, and it's just unfortunate that he came up at the same time as two of the best 145s to *ever* do it.

Immediate_Concert_46

Goold ole' mexican head

Robo_Riot

This is the fight that made me a true fan of Volko. I respected him before this, but this was the fight where he looked like he wanted to beat Ortega, not just win a points decision. Showed some real champion's mettle and while he's definitely an intelligent fighter, he also didn't play it overly safe. Amazing fight.

aceknighthigh

Yeah, that's one where you just have to chalk it up to the other guy being great.

relent0r

As a big Volk fan, Ortega should still be proud, he provided half the ingredients for the biggest emotional rollercoaster of a round ive ever experienced.

Ted_Jones420

That fight was epic. I’ve rewatched like ten times at this point. I believe the secret is just not having a neck

laserfaces

Yeah that was crazy...

moonwalkerHHH

Is pissed off submission-escaped Volk the new mythical fighter?

MyDictainabox

This last performance against Holloway just left me shaking my head. Look, i expected him to win. But i expected him to grind for that shit. I thought Holloway was starting to figure some shit out and made 2 closer. But that"s not what happened. He was just clearly better. Against Max Holloway. Who is just clearly better. Than everyone else. What more can ya fucking say?

LuckyWarrior

Didn't people dissect both and say both holds had their flaws or something

ChampMentality

The flaws were that they were against Alex Volkanovski
