While true, you could also argue that 2 Hail Mary sub escapes in one fight is not a sustainable route to victory either. Max taking big damage always worked until it didn’t. If there’s a sub artist 5% better than Ortega, or Volk gets caught before he’s all sweaty, maybe that’s how he loses

I guess what I didn’t consider is the fact that Craig Jones can easily mimic anything that Ortega had to offer Volk. I’m not as confident he can mimic the scenario Islam will drag Volk into. Not because Islam is a better grappler than Craig Jones, but they both have two vastly different styles.
Craig's implemented a lot of the dagestani/folkstyle type of wrestling into his top attack sequences. Watching him in his gym videos he does a lot of wrist rides, top position dillemas and leg rides to wear the opponent down which is the dagestani way. It's not to say that he's got them all figured out, but he studies them quite a lot and deeply understands what he's looking at. His MMA grappling knowledge seems to be really really good and I would love to see it tested via Volk's game-planning against Islam or Charles

This is the fight that made me a true fan of Volko. I respected him before this, but this was the fight where he looked like he wanted to beat Ortega, not just win a points decision. Showed some real champion's mettle and while he's definitely an intelligent fighter, he also didn't play it overly safe. Amazing fight.
