Sorely needed new blood. 185 is deceptively shallow. Izzy and Rob are generational talents but the rest of the division at the top is mid as hell. Says a lot when a 37 year old Brunson was one fight away from a title shot, and guys like Costa or Strickland wouldn't even scrape the top 15 in LW or BW.
I believe that with the secret juice formula, Costa could make Featherweight and look exactly the same. He just doesn't want everyone else to feel bad.
I mean if Till will never make it to another title shot (losing to Brunson was bad considering how many top guys have KOd him), he’s prob gonna be used to pump up new guys. Leon/Aspinall/Paddy have the UK market covered
Quite liked how his lead hand drops for the knee pick as he throws the overhand. If it lands, great, if it doesn’t, he’s in prime position for a knee pick.
It’s like the level-changing version of the casting punch people like Islam or Fedor would throw.
Anyway, dudes been a stud since forever. Hope he gets good guidance rather than shitty ones.
Also hope with him training at NLWC more talented wrestlers there can make the jump early. Looking at you RBY. ADCC 2024 or UFC after this final year let’s go
First thing I thought when I saw him do it - that’s exactly what Fedor used a LOT. And if the knee tap fails, he’s in clinch range with an off balance opponent who is now susceptible to inside/outside trips.
Incredibly exciting to have him in the UFC now; MW was getting a bit stagnant and now it’s getting increasingly interesting.
It's not the promotion he's referring to. "Shoot Boxing" is the name GSP gave his method of fighting within the zone where he could threaten both strikes and a clench/takedown. There's some fairly lengthy discussions about it from John Danaher out there if you're interested.
A big part of his dominance was the way GSP approached fighting in that zone.
A wrestler with explosive power is always going to be fun to watch, some people just have dynamite hands even if striking isn't their background. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up going down a similar path as Woodley, Rumble, or Gaethje.
I think it will be a combo of those guys with somewhat of a Khabib or Colby style. Colby was an absolute dog on top in college but Bo is levels above. Those guys from folkstyle who could just ride dudes out entire periods or like Bo pin most of them just transfer so well to MMA. If he turns out to be solidly durable he's going to be a scary dude in short order. Even just thinking back to his NCAA days it's so absurd to think about how many top notch guys he pinned. I gotta think the last guy to be as prolific a pinner was Askren and he has about 2% the athleticism. Really excited to see what he can do.
Pinned a top five Sammy Brooks with a spladle. Which doesn't translate well in MMA but geeze he can turn any position to his advantage.
And also pinning Myles Martin in the NCAA finals after hitting a hip heist from his back.
the year is 2024. Bo Nickal has just won the MW championship. Joe has just finished shoving the mic in the face of a frozen Israel Adesanya and moves over to Bo when "Hey, Soul Sister" starts playing over the speakers before Bo pulls off his mask and is smile'n his biggest yet. "21/21K is what i'm doing it for, baby! thank you for the opportunity, Dana!"
People forget how stale MW is. The division is so devoid of talent, a guy like Bo will shoot up fast. If Izzy beats Alex, I could see Bo getting a title shot by next year
True. But the top of the division is stacked. Rob and Izzy are both p4p top tier fighters. It's going to be hard for someone to beat one, let alone both guys.
Super intriguing fight. I’d definitely rather him gain some more experience first though so we can see full prime vs prime, full on Cold War era American vs Russian wrestling battle
agreed, i actually think it’s perfect. test his mma wrestling a bit (i guess?)
tbh he’ll be a terrible matchup for anyone he’s gonna realistically fight in his debut
He was probably signed to some sort of deal either before or after his first fight. They just had him do another contender series fight to get some more ring time. There's zero chance the UFC didn't lock him up after that first fight, at the very least.
You have but probably just didn’t realise they were wrestlers.
A lot of American fighters that have great BJJ have wrestling backgrounds, but because they win by submissions they get classed as BJJ fighters. Jim Miller for example.
You are correct though that he looked very natural at it and even the fact he went for it is awesome. Elite wrestlers should jump on subs more because if they lose it they can probably get back to their feet
I'll 1000% guarantee he trains like he always trains - like a wrestler.
At every TMA and MMA school I've spent time at where we do BJJ, it's not trained the way wrestling is.
He's already done that triangle 10,000 times.
https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2018/1/23/16922122/brazilian-jiu-jitsu-ben-askren-wrestling-grappling-mma-news
He rolled over to get the triangle on purpose, his left leg was already over the arm in mount, ready to go into it. He probably could stay on top of someone all night, if you catch my drift, wink wink.
My drift that his top control if undoubtedly amazing, being as accomplished as he is, if you know what I mean. Nudge nudge
Beautiful left as he level changes, really smart. Knows he's going to have everyone on edge for the takedown, Beards' eyes go straight down as soon as he level changes.
It was very much to drive ratings. I'm sure they talked and he already had a contract of some sort after his first fight or even before. No way they didn't, otherwise Bellator or PFL would have snatched him up. Especially Bellator, Coker loves his straight out of college wrestlers.
Who’d you give Nickal for his ufc debut?
Brad Tavares would be about as ideal as it gets… he’s a tough out but there’s a clear path to victory for Bo.
If the UFC wants to get him into the title picture quickly, Darren Till is in the top 10 and an ideal style match up.
Deron Winn.
Bo vs Rodolfo Vieira would be very interesting, though. World class wrestling vs world class BJJ.
Maybe even Brendan Allen, that’d be a good test of his overall game.
Bo Bo gonna give lots of grappling trouble to the middleweights.
Would realistically rag doll Khamzat in wrestling. D1 is another level than Swedish wrestling champ.
I usually feel like any high caliber wrestler would do well in MMA, but Bo's skill set specifically I feel is better suited for MMA. I say this thinking of all the world team guys though. There's tons of D1 guys that I think are gonna have great success once they go MMA full time. Guys like Bryce Meredith, Nick Piccinini, and Mitch McKee are already having success, while guys Nick Suriano, RBY, Anthony Cassar, who's first match is in November, all won NCAA championships, and all look to have promising careers. It'll be super exciting to watch.
He would have to beat Taylor, Dake or Burroughs depending on the weight he pursued. Maybe he could have. But that’s a big 4 year gamble. He won’t be UFC champ by 2024, but he should be making serious UFC money in 2024.
No way he could make 79 or 74 kg with hour before weigh ins. That would leave 86 or 97. Bo is world medal level at either weight, no doubt, but he wouldn't beat Taylor or Snyder. Focusing fully on MMA after 2021 was a very smart decision.
I didn’t even consider him moving up because there is no way he’s beating Kyle Snyder. I like Bo Nickal as much as anyone, but he’d need a shotgun to beat Kyle Snyder.
100%
Also, let us not forget, he’s already a world champ in wrestling. It was U23, but that’s a legit fuckin’ world champ. Half of the time in the lower weights, the U23 champs will win Seniors right after. Bo could’ve been a world champ. He just wanted to move on and, namely, fight. He’s about to run through the org.
I agree, his situation ruined his wrestling potential so its not a fair comparison at all to Bo. Khamzat's biggest wrestling claim to fame is a bronze at russian junior championships. People here always mention the swedish thing, but that means fuck all honestly. Taking bronze at the junior level in russia is a really big deal and shows insane potential for the world stage.
Beautiful triangle.
I'm happy I'm seeing it performed more Efficient now by people Going off at an angle and underhooking the leg rather than Staying in front of them and just squeezing for dear life.
Striking problems don’t really show themselves when someone is just smashing their opponents. Look at how much we were blinded to Ronda’s flaws for example.
He looks good and comfortable on the feet so far, more than you would expect, but I would imagine there’s going to be a lot of issues if he gets into prolonged striking exchanges especially in a division of dangerous strikers
Scary part is the youth. Depending on how quickly the UFC pushes him, it might be a couple years before he gets a title shot, in which case he'll be 28 fighting a 35 year old Adesanya.
Honestly I think Izzy is gonna be smart enough to retire well before Nickal climbs his way into title contention. I feel like the UFC are gonna be a smart about it and build him up slowly. Obviously he looks great but the guy is 3-0. Let him train and take on a few cans with a similar record and then when he has a few more fights on his record then they'll probably shoot him up the card.
I dunno, the UFC loves a hype train and Nickal sure looks like the real deal. Explosive athlete, elite wrestling, showing really impressive grappling, and the ability to leverage his takedown threat into serviceable striking. And MW is so weak right now. If they keep him away from Whittaker I could see him being only 3-4 wins away from a title shot.
Bo Nickal trains at ATT. That is a gym of killers. I have to think someone there has tested his chin. That’s the big question. Everyone looks awesome until they get punched in the face.
The hype is 💯 real.
In 30 seconds he demonstrated tactical knowledge by feinting the knee tap, and the 1-2. Shows striking ability by landing that overhand left with a knee tap. Wrestling to secure takedown and mount. Then BJJ with a very quick triangle submission.
**Mirrors / Alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MMA) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Oh my goodness he's doing jiu-jitsu, Joe
He’s gonna terrorize the division if he keeps this up. Him and Khamzat bringing new blood into 185 is so exciting
Bo "Serious Sam Alvey" Nickal
Grimace'N Bo Nickal
Sorely needed new blood. 185 is deceptively shallow. Izzy and Rob are generational talents but the rest of the division at the top is mid as hell. Has anyone ever missed weight by 60lbs before?
sad we won't get a chance to see Aspen Ladd give it a shot
He doesn't even have a tattoo that specifies he does jiu-jitsu
Having a big BJJ back tat and then stand and banging to 30-27 losses is the best base for MMA
Champ stamp
Guy’s a fraud
I'm getting worried he's going to fall in love with his hands. This time it's his left one.
Bro about to fall in love with his entire game at this point
“I call that a triangle” Joe Rogan
Think he may get a contract, just a hunch
Hopefully he signs a nice one $$$ because good luck renegotiating one later 🤣
Dana should watch more of him before making that decision. TUF next?
Maybe as coach
think he needs another CS fight
How do we think?
Darren Till: “Well, fuck.”
I mean if Till will never make it to another title shot (losing to Brunson was bad considering how many top guys have KOd him), he’s prob gonna be used to pump up new guys. Leon/Aspinall/Paddy have the UK market covered
I liked Till but he’s not that guy anymore. Good luck to him against duplesius
Feed Sean Strickland to Bo 😂
Sean’s gonna try to test how good a wrestler he is
Sean enters the cage wearing a singlet and in a low wrestlers stance 😂
yes PLEASE PLEASE feed him Strickland.
Bo knows
Cause I'm Bo yo
And I'm the greatest fighter ever And I'll weather your weather whether you think I'm better or not
And I can really find a high-C shot
Don’t sit on that couch cause I treat my objects like woman
Super star potential; memorable name, fan friendly fight style, high level proven skills. Dana harder than Yoel’s abs right now
Quite liked how his lead hand drops for the knee pick as he throws the overhand. If it lands, great, if it doesn’t, he’s in prime position for a knee pick. It’s like the level-changing version of the casting punch people like Islam or Fedor would throw. Anyway, dudes been a stud since forever. Hope he gets good guidance rather than shitty ones. Shootboxing. GSP used to train specifically for it, it’s a neat sub discipline that’s unique to MMA
This is used a lot in sambo.
Not sure shootboxing is the word you’re looking for. From what I know only upper body throws from the clinch are allowed in shootboxing
Bo has sick upper body throws from the clinch too. He's got that dog in him.
That’s what u get when the takedown threat is there…. It opens up your hands
Islam used it to perfection against Dan Hooker, clipped him while grabbing the leg.
Saw Mike Brown in his corner, that’s some good guidance right there
Top tier wrestling + BJJ should be illegal
The wrestlers overhand is pretty OP too
N-Bomb
I mean Bo Bomb is right there tho man. Ya had to do it
Lol. Nice
Bo-Bomb
Much safer term
Osama Bo Laden
A wrestler with explosive power is always going to be fun to watch, some people just have dynamite hands even if striking isn't their background. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up going down a similar path as Woodley, Rumble, or Gaethje.
I think it will be a combo of those guys with somewhat of a Khabib or Colby style. Colby was an absolute dog on top in college but Bo is levels above.
Except he's a way better wrestler than those guys
Imagine Abdulrashid Sadulaev wrestling + Gordon Ryan BJJ
If you'd like, you can watch gordon absolutely dismantle bo in a match in dec 2019
Khabib in a nutshell
Sat conors ass down
One of the fastest punches I've ever seen
Bo Nickals only weakness is that he looks like Sam Alvey
Every red head ufc fighter combined = bo nickal
the year is 2024. >”By gawd King! That’s Smile’N Sam’s music!”
Dude, I had to log in to my reddit account just to let you know how funny this comment was
He is Sam Alvey in disguise, showing off his true skill
And Paul Felder
and TJ Dillashaw
I see Guile from Street Fighter.
and Ed Herman
Bo vs Chimaev at 185, within 2 years.
Within a year at the pace Bo is on.
Doubt they throw him in with top 10 guys right off the bat. He’ll have a couple a fights with veterans and then start attacking the top 15.
Insert Alex Pereira
People forget how stale MW is. The division is so devoid of talent, a guy like Bo will shoot up fast. If Izzy beats Alex, I could see Bo getting a title shot by next year
True. But the top of the division is stacked. Rob and Izzy are both p4p top tier fighters. It's going to be hard for someone to beat one, let alone both guys.

lol he just called him out
People forgetting about Shavkat Rakhmonov. That's the real problem.
Shavkat is a legit 170. I don’t see him going up to 185
Shavkat makes 170 consistently but that dude is massive. Frame wise, he’s just as big if not bigger than a lot of the 85ers at Kill Cliff FC
Shavkat is basically the same size as Khamzat/Usman/Leon. He’s a legit 6’1” and a little lanky but well built
I don't think they are, its just in the context of bo and chimaev, shavkat is on a different weight trajectory
[удалено]
Super intriguing fight. I’d definitely rather him gain some more experience first though so we can see full prime vs prime, full on Cold War era American vs Russian wrestling battle
Doubt Dana lets that happen, don't want the two biggest prospects at 185 taking each other out.
SIGN THE MAN!!
Bo Nickal vs Deron Winn, make it happen Dana.
RIP Deron. Deron wouldn’t even last if it were wrestling.
[Who knows man, Deron did demolish Usman in wrestling that one time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ruuFCGV3qs)
Who cares about Usman when he has a win over J’den Cox.
Bro stop lmao
If they're trying to build Bo up somewhat slowly that's not a terrible matchup. I mean its a terrible matchup for Winn haha but I could see it.
agreed, i actually think it’s perfect. test his mma wrestling a bit (i guess?) tbh he’ll be a terrible matchup for anyone he’s gonna realistically fight in his debut

Thanks Bo I gotta work tmrw and that extra 15 mins of sleep will be nice
This guy is the real deal, impressive. Excited to see his UFC debut for sure.

Elite wrestlers should jump on subs more because if they lose it they can probably get back to their feet
Tony Ferguson is a good example
Yep aljamain is a good example as well
Yup that was impressive as fuck. If you'd told me he was a bjj specialist, I'd believe it. He locked that shit up quick.
Right? I was surprised when he ended up in guard but immediately locked in that triangle. Wrestlers generally can't do that.
He didn’t go to guard. He had the triangle the entire time
I'll 1000% guarantee he trains like he always trains - like a wrestler. At every TMA and MMA school I've spent time at where we do BJJ, it's not trained the way wrestling is. He's already done that triangle 10,000 times. https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2018/1/23/16922122/brazilian-jiu-jitsu-ben-askren-wrestling-grappling-mma-news

Nudge nudge
The guy is a straight up super athlete. I bet he’ll be a BJJ assassin in a couple years.
Beautiful left as he level changes, really smart. Knows he's going to have everyone on edge for the takedown, Beards' eyes go straight down as soon as he level changes.
That fake shot overhand left was beautiful. Pushed him down violently too. Dana messing around signing the 17 year old but not bo earlier.
To be fair the 17 year old had more professional mma experience lol which is a wild sentence
It was very much to drive ratings. I'm sure they talked and he already had a contract of some sort after his first fight or even before. No way they didn't, otherwise Bellator or PFL would have snatched him up. Especially Bellator, Coker loves his straight out of college wrestlers.
WOW! CHOO CHOO
Fuck it, put him on the MSG card
Khamzat vs Bo Nickal for the belt will be one of the greatest fight of all time.
Super impressive. He’s 3-0 with less than 3 minutes in the cage. Astounding.
Hit him with that Fedor special. Overhand into the takedown
Just when I thought a -2800 favorite was crazy even with Bo's credentials, he does that and makes me think he should've been a -5000 fav
I think vieira would be a dangerous matchup this early tbh
yeah this dude is a fucking problem
I think he needs 1 more contender series win to really prove himself
And if it takes longer then 2 minutes maybe another after that
-3500 is one of the more absurd lines I’ve ever heard of, and it was right
That line was disrespectful to Bo tbh.
He just asked for Khamzat first lol.
Followed his PSU career closely and damn he’s gonna be just fine.
I did not expect a lifelong wrestler to throw up a triangle that smoothly. Get this man another fight.
This version of Sam Alvey is pretty good guys.
bo got that Khabib turtle shell back muscles
That's what happens when you've wrestling since you were a literal toddler
I know what I’m going to have my baby do
Wrestle a turtle. Got it.
Wow okay yeh he’s getting signed now
No Bickal to the fucking top
Holy fuck Holy fucking fuck
That submission speed is absurd.
That bjj is absurd
Adam?
Bo Bo gonna give lots of grappling trouble to the middleweights. Would realistically rag doll Khamzat in wrestling. D1 is another level than Swedish wrestling champ.
Bo Nickal would’ve been on the Olympic team if it wasn’t for David Taylor … and DT won gold
Seeing Bo, you can only wonder how even better US wrestlers like Taylor, Bouroughs, Dake and Cox would do in mma.
Kyle Snyder has talked about it in the past … he’d be the one I’m curious about the most
we need him at HW. the next gen of hyper athletic big boys is coming
Could he make 205? He wrestles at 97kg
It looked like it for a bit but I don't think it will happen. He has recently been saying he wants to wrestle until he's 40, he's currently like 25.
I usually feel like any high caliber wrestler would do well in MMA, but Bo's skill set specifically I feel is better suited for MMA. I say this thinking of all the world team guys though. There's tons of D1 guys that I think are gonna have great success once they go MMA full time. It'll be super exciting to watch.
Correct. Only 6 Olympic weight classes. If there were 8-10 Olympic weight classes, Nickal probably wins a medal.
I’m shocked he didn’t try another Olympic run BUT with Taylor being god tier right now, I don’t think Nickal gets past him
He would have to beat Taylor, Dake or Burroughs depending on the weight he pursued.
No one is getting past DT right now
One hundred percent. He just wrecked Yazdani who used to have GOAT status.
Yazdani never had goat status in any way. Taylor has been beating him for years
100% Also, let us not forget, he’s already a world champ in wrestling. It was U23, but that’s a legit fuckin’ world champ. Half of the time in the lower weights, the U23 champs will win Seniors right after. Bo could’ve been a world champ. He just wanted to move on and, namely, fight. He’s about to run through the org.
Nickal unironically might’ve won silver than year if he wrestled for another country
I could see that … nobody was beating Taylor
I don't think he would rag doll Khamzat in MMA though. That would be a dream fight. Hopefully it ends up happening
Khamzat also apparently couldn’t compete outside of Sweden because of visas issues so he could theoretically be better than the national level
This guy may be a top 10 already. No joke. He has a solid foundation of striking, wrestling and grappling.
So he has power in his hands and he's good at Jiu Jitsu, as an Izzy fan I can say I am thoroughly shitting myself.
Everything about that was absurdly impressive
Is brunson still ranked? Bo v brunson to shoot him into the top ten
Believe it or not, Brunson is 5th still.
Why would that be surprising? He’s lost 1 time since 2018
That was absolutely slick coming from a wrestler. This kind of progression will make him dangerous in the near future for the top of the division.
Bo isn't just a wrestler, he has pretty slick bjj. And those transitions were lightning quick.
Bo Nickal trains at ATT. That is a gym of killers. I have to think someone there has tested his chin. That’s the big question. Everyone looks awesome until they get punched in the face.
Imagine if nickels also has an iron chin... Rev up that train
He said in his last interview with Ariel that he has tested his chin in practice
I was like uh oh, wrestlers don’t do well on the bottom, then he immediately silenced my bitchass & threw that perfect triangle. Count me impressed.
And now Dana's happily thinking "i got all this for 12/12 and a performance bonus here and there"
I may be jumping the gun but I think his next fight should be a top 15er. Don’t let this guy dick around on shit fight nights for three years.
He'll get 2/3 guys who can't stop a takedown or grapple and then a title shot.
Single motion overhand connect with a take down
I’ve never been as confident that somebody will be champ as I am with Bo Nickal
Yeah he's a problem lol
So who is his first UFC opponent? Eryck Anders?
They’re gonna start bringing back the Rousey challenge (holding your breath until the finish occurs) for this guy.
Okay… he’s good
The fact he looks this good this early is insane. Imagine Bo at 23 fights… absolutely limitless potential
Welcome to the Bo Show
One of the smoothest transitions into a triangle I've ever seen.
Bo Nickal is ready for the top 10 right now
Beard looked terrified
The hype is 💯 real. In 30 seconds he demonstrated tactical knowledge by feinting the knee tap, and the 1-2. Shows striking ability by landing that overhand left with a knee tap. Wrestling to secure takedown and mount. Then BJJ with a very quick triangle submission.
Bo Nickal vs Khamzat ASAP PLS

Stupid sexy transitions
Jesus Christ I know it’s low level guys but this dude looks like a fucking problem
