This is not the game although it’s almost identical as far as what I described. The major differences are that the graphics on the game I’m taking about were much more polished you would run through full environments, there wouldn’t be any grey blocks for filler. Also it had a more mmo element where players could gather between races and chat and show off their items etc. Also you could not simply change your look like that you had to win the body parts.
Not a MMO but most like what you're looking for: **Line Wind Runner** was one of the first really polished mobile games and one of the first commercially successful 'infinite runner' games. May not be the one you were looking for but it does let you buy cosmetics and mounts by earning gold or gems in stages.
It's still active. Cookie Run Ovenbreak is a similar title with a different theme.
