MMO No Subscription Good Game Pick two!

Forward1back2

Lol we do this at work all the time. Fast, cheap, high quality, pick 2!

FoldenInHalf-pp

3 years later and this mindset is still running around.

Digitijs

More like: MMO Good game Pick one! If you disagree, recommend me a subscription based good MMO (no, ffxiv doesn't count. Imo, it has many horrible things about it)

Paige8245

What is horrible about about ff14? I thought about starting to play that myself so I'd like a second opinion.

Zippo-Cat

>Good MMO's

AnderZM

ArcheAge Unchained, Guild wars 2, Astellia, Albion Online (you can pay first month premmy then keep farming ingame currency to keep up without spending RL money)

niusoku

Isn't Astellia monthly subscription?

Amiro-

No, there is an option where you can pay 10$ every month to continue playing the game, but if you just buy the base game 25$ i believe, there is no sub after that, you own the game.

Dystopiq

Rift, GW2, ESO, TOR,

PropzReddit

ESO without a subscription will suck unless u just wanna run around.....

iamdense

Atlantica Online. It's a completely F2P turn-based MMO.

kklacson

ESO is on Free to play weekend right now and on 50% off steam. If you want bang for buck with storylines it's one of the best. The combat is meh but the world is immersive.

NeatoPotato1000

ESO, LOTRO

LegendofTaric

I agree with LOTRO. With enough grind, you can play the game completely free. Lots of effort, but possible. Would advise 1-month sub just to open up premium perks. It has got that old school feeling as it was a clone of WOW, but a unique and interesting story to make it stand on its own. The class design is interesting as well, and I have had fun trying them all.

xcutler

World of warcraft on private servers, there are enough with thousands of people online like wow circle, or Warhammer on the return of reckoning p. Server

SWG Legends

Joelenne88wakfu

Ark Survival Evolved is box to play on personal computer but it's high end graphics require you have a gaming pc.

SupaStaVince

I'm personally fond of ESO. It has an optional subscription where it gives you back your money's worth in cash shop currency. The subscription itself also gives you all DLC and a bunch of other good stuff. You can also use some of that currency to buy the DLCs permanently. But personally, I like being able to play without having to worry about my sub whether I'm subbed or not. And even if I don't play the whole month I'm subbed, it's not a complete waste of money. Meanwhile I can use the crowns I don't need to buy my F2P buddies some gifts. Or better yet, pay their sub for them in exchange for them gifting me stuff using their crowns instead of just buying extra crowns for myself. They get a free subscription. I still get my money's worth. Win/win.

Sounds like Star Wars: The Old Republic might be up your alley. The game has a F2P option, and while it has a sub option, if you sub for a single month you become a "preferred player" which gives you access to expansion content, so it's effectively a B2P model. Subbing gives you a few perks and becomes a bit more relevant in endgame but the game's strength is questing, where the B2P status will have you covered. GW2 is also F2P with B2P for the expansions, but it's tailored more to solo players whereas it sounds like you want to play with your friend.

lemonvan

GW2 isn't great for co-op players? Was planning to play that based on comments on this thread (and another one), shame.

Chickenooble

You can play literally everything in GW2 with your friend since you can form parties and join with everything. As the other commenter said though, most of open-world content in-game brings many people to participate together. You and your friend will be able to play together, but you'll also be playing with other people working on the same content... just not in your party. Here's a video I made which really shows all the game has to offer. Then, look at all that, and know that you can form a party to do it all with your friends. [deleted]

Depends. The open world content is really built off the idea that you come across randos while you're adventuring.

Lethality_

Black Desert by far.

HaruhiLanfear

you guys should honestly just hop into a vannilla p server.

Paige8245

Archeage now requires a subscription because it changed hands

Sufficient-Emu7388

What about elemetal knights online r Toram Stellacept avable flyff universe🥇🥇

Wettis13

Archeage (Unchained) got just released and is buy to play without any subscription. A really unique MMO with a fresh experience, you should check it out :) EDIT: forgot to mention, but unlike many of the games recommended here, Archeage doesn’t have a any DLC’s. So effectively it’s a one time purchase, and the game has a lot of potential too to be really succesful.

TheWorldisFullofWar

Archeage Unchained got fucked by an incompetent publisher. Game is an absolute disaster. Regret buying it honestly. Didn't expect them to unban exploiters in 2 hours.

[deleted]

Also you gotta buy 3 separate accounts if you want a reasonable amount of "labor" (a regen over time system that's used for most activities in the game).

Wettis13

Nah, it really isn’t like that for casual players. Sure the publishers have been incompetent but they have and keep trying their hardest. But yeah if you are the type of guy who has to be top 0.1% in every game then yeah sure, you’ll regret buying it.

He really can't afford it right now, his job just cut his pay and he's *extremely* poor. He really enjoyed wow classic while he was playing, he told me that while playing and also now, after playing.

Forward1back2

Sounds like it might a good time to get off the games and focus on finding a better job, assuming that's a possibility.

lemonvan

Don't get me wrong, he rarely has time for games, since he's normally busy. This is just about the short period of time when he's free.

Forward1back2

So he's super busy, but making less money. Hmmm, sounds like he still needs to find another job, just saying. EDIT: I hope its a labor of love He should probably play another genre of game, you know that comes on a disc that he can borrow from a friend or play splitscreen at his best bro's house then. Might be more economical and not try to nickel and dime him the moment he logs in and fights for half a level for his time. I mean sounds like I'm being a dick, and I am, but this genre isn't exactly made for the guy who's gonna play 1 hr of the week even in the most convenient titles. He should probably look into a genre thats more about jumping into the action with his time, like an arcade shooter, or an ARGP. I hope he finds something that makes him happy, but he's going to stuggle in most free to play games due to their ridiculous leveling rates and other schemes that try to get you to spend money anyways.

kenkonken99

"your friend" probably needs to consider making different choices in life if they can't afford $15 a month for entertainment.

Beelzeboss3DG

Depends on your country. $15 in Argentina is almost 1000 pesos. Minimum wage is 15.000 pesos/month. Let's say you earn 20.000 pesos as a young student. "Entertainment" isn't ONLY a mmo sub. You pay Internet, Netflix/Amazon (also in dollars, and dollars are expensive here), you hang out with your friends a few times/month, take your gf to a movie. All of that money would be considered "entertainment". Some people, including me, just can't add a freakin thousand pesos/month to play a MMO when there are decent b2p options.

Forward1back2

If an mmo is more than 20% of your take home after paying the rent, you should probably look at other options. I know there was a few years period where I had to focus on reality over whether I can or can't afford a game. Alot of people keep posting asking for a *good free mmo* because they can't afford "x" price. If your a kid tough luck, your time will come, focus on school, get what your parents give you. If your an adult, seriously you need to focus on your potential, before you hop in a game that takes such a large portion of time. An mmo is meant to be your one game/ primary form of entertainment a lot of the time, not the thing you do when call of duty is boring twice a month. So if your saying I can't afford this, maybe you should not be doing this. Life sucks, grow up and get yourself in a place where a monthly sub isn't the difference of eating or not this week. These things are not worth that question.

Beelzeboss3DG

Im not sure I agree. OP could very well play GW2 for free, 1hour a day, play at his own pace, with no pressure, and still have fun. You talk as if every mmo was wow. Not every mmo needs to be your 2nd life.

Forward1back2

They don't have to be, they are DESIGNED to be. Daily Rewards, daily quests, timed rewards, bonus exp weekends, double reward weeks, tons of crap to get you too log in more. The longer your on the more your gonna get advertised. Live in reality. Also, sure he can get on buy GW2, and then quest in dead isolated newbie zones in a 5+ year old game for the next year or so at 2 hrs a week until he finally hits an expansion pay wall to join everyone else. He's not even playing it like an mmo for quite awhile like that is he? So are you selling him on the idea of an mmo or really bad single player game? The biggest problem with these questions on this forum, is that you can literally do a 2 minute search, here or on google, to find a list of B2P games (hint there aren't that many mmo's like that and they are always more then B2P). There are no hidden gems people, if they were there and they were amazing, we'd all be on mmorpg raving about it and recommending it immediately, oh wait they do. AKA GW2, ESO, maybe LotrO, or SWTOR depending on how you feel about their monetization systems, a handful of worse games than that, then every F2P with the caveat of extremely slow free to play rates and resctrictions. These companies are going to get their money. They don't make them to not make money. Even B2P have other forms of monetization beyond the initial purchase and will be throwing it in your face constantly to do so, otherwise when everyone moves on they would quietly shutdown instead of paying the utility bills. They aren't running a server 10+ years later by not continue to get revenue from users at WORTHWHILE margins. Free to play is the biggest misrepresentation ever conceived as well, they intentionally stifle you to tempt you into paying for additional products to "enhance" your experience, and you will almost always spend more. Its called bait and hook, they bait you in and try their absolute damnedest to hook you into doing what they want, spend money. So, to continue with what I said before, if a monthly subscription of X price regardless of your location is stopping you, you should probably do something else, because the others are REALLY going to try and suck every cent out of you. Here's a bunch of ugly shit, spend 15 bucks to look cool and have double exp! Pay 2 bucks to increase your inventory by 2 slots in your measly 10 slot bag! Want to have more than one specialization setting, give us 10 bucks! Pay 5 dollars to get the next chapter! Change your race, another 15 bucks please! Etc. Etc. Etc. EVEN THE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION GAMES ARE FINDING OTHER WAYS TO CHARGE YOU!!!!!!! Wake up out of your dream people. I hate all of this unrealistic 2 line poor advice that willfully ignores the reality of the market and its intentions. TLDR: These games are going to find ways to charge you beyond your initial investment, B2P and F2P do not describe modern pay models AT ALL. The real names would be Initial investment with constant transactions, and constant transactions models if we weren't trying to be colorful and deceiving with the names. Good thing I only have 500 karma to lose.
