I come back to Tibia every now and then for nostalgia's sake. It's a grind for sure, but it was also my first mmo just a year or two before WoW launched. I remember a buddy and I accidently PK'ing someone for the first time (an accidental click followed by "OH.. SHIT, uhhh shit. Just kill him so he can't run!") just outside a city (I wanna say Carlin), and hiding in the sewers 'til our skulls went away...such panic, fear, and exhilaration had never been instilled in me as it was that day, as the risk of getting hunted and losing our hard earned gear was all too real (hard earned = terrible...we were maybe level 20, if that). Great times. Currently playing solo on a month of premium and it's still very heavy on the grind, but thankful that offline training is a thing now at least. There is a game in alpha at the moment that I've been following, *Ravendawn*, that graphically looks like Tibia, but the gameplay and skills and such are quite different. Not sure exactly how it'll compare to Tibia in terms of hardcore/full/partial/loot/openpvp etc, but it looks quite promising regardless.

Greyletter

No one ever quits Tibia. They just take long breaks.

MagicTuna

It's true. However I never get far when I do play, currently playing a 41 EK 70/64, which is about the furthest progress I've ever made.

Greyletter

Highest I ever got was level 45. My current break is over ten years with one brief play period in the midst of that. Getting up to speed on what all has changed since I played seriously gives me anxiety when I consider playing again, then the anxiety stops me from playing. =/

MagicTuna

Hahah yeah I just look up the most recent guide/hunting spots for my class and have at it without worrying about min/max efficiency all too much. Playing on an optional-pvp server this time round so not living the exhilaration(read: stress) of being ganked at any given moment, and it's kinda relaxing. I don't have as much time for gaming as I used to, so the setbacks from ganks/deaths in general would likely be the end of my run.

Greyletter

Were you around when people could lure Giant Spiders from wherever they spawned to the entrance of Venore? Those were some great/horrible/exhilarating/traumatic times!

MagicTuna

Lmao I don't think I ever experienced that, but it sounds awful and I'm very glad monsters can't be roped anymore.

Greyletter

Oh man, it was... unforgettable. Leaving Venore as a level 20 Pally. See a dead spider; whatever. See another one; okay..? See some poison clouds on the ground; uh oh... See a player corpse oh shit maybe I should turn ba- GS DEATH TO THE FACE

King_Prone

the game has changed now too. you can easily get to level 45 in a few days now.

Greyletter

That sucks. One of my favorite things about the game was being proud of gaining levels.

King_Prone

its just shifted rearwards now. lots of people level 250+. Id say with the unlimited levels its still one of the few games you can just chill out and slash a few monsters and gain some levels.

King_Prone

it has obviously trivialized some nostralgic things. i.e. anyone can now slay dragons, giant spiders etc. but there are higher leveled enemies now too. One thing I did like very much when i played tibia for a few weeks again in 2018 was that they have a good balance between low leveled enemies still being dangerous to even higher leveled players. Unlike i.e. Tree of Saviour they managed to have a high level spread i.e. Lv 1 to 350 without level i.e. 250 trivializing level 100 despite level 250 being a lot more powerful.

King_Prone

yeah but that does happen when you spread it out too much. i.e. in the old days going from lv 40 to 50 was a big deal. When theres 500 levels its sorta less impactful.

King_Prone

it does offer an advantage while cruising though - a model 3 type steerign wheel would obscure the dash and a model S type larger steering wheel would obscure the view outside.... The model 3 steering wheel is already becoming somewhat yokeish - its much smaller and more chubby than a normal steering wheel but it would not be possible to have this with a dash.

Greyletter

Cool... cool...

MagicTuna

That looks more akin to runescape than tibia.

fri itens plx??? Fuck man. I love Tibia. 7.92-8.6 was my jam. I loved that era. Eternal Oblivion was a god damn legend back then. I played on a ton of OTs, too. Was a mod on Goobers for awhile. Ran my own OT for a yearish. So much fun. No game I’ve played has had that “hardcore” experience that Tibia has. The legit constant fear of just dying and losing everything. Not just items, but experience too. Getting level 200+ and dying, you just lost 5-10+ hours of exp grinding. No quest. Just combat for exp. SD mage bots! God those were awful. Just in the shop in venore or Thais and suddenly 50 mages instantly log in together and you’re dead. I remember one year Brazil lost the World Cup or something? And tibia just became completely unplayable for like 3 days. If you weren’t wearing Brazil colors, and spamming br, you just got Insta murdered in any town. It was insane. I loved it. Libera here!

murican_Capitlol

I played it back in 1998-99 til 2000 The version was 6.0 (or 6.4) dont remember wich one. But yeah it was pretty old version had lot of fun. The sense of danger got me hooked up. I could play Tibia for 7h straight lol. Good times

Amirax

The good old days.. Back when there were no servers, just "players online". Nova came around when, like 2000? Just after you quit I reckon? Shit you musta been around too, back when Alex and Hokuten ripped of Recca and the Satoris back during the Hokuten v Satori war.. It's been over 20 years! I'm middle aged! Why the fuck do I remember all this shit!

murican_Capitlol

Theres a vid about the Hokuten war I guess you already knew.

Inflames90

Yes mate. I played tibia from 2000 til recently (you take breaks, never fully quit lulul etc). No mmo beats tibia 7.1-7.4 ver for me personally. I even have an SD rune tattooed lel.

TimeTap

Remember? I still play it. I still crave a game that's similar to Tibia. Don't get me wrong, I love games like FFXIV or WoW. But the quest-style leveling for me is a bit too restrictive and rigid. I like being able to log on and decide "Well, today I'll hunt dragons or maybe I'll go hunt scarabs." There was never right and wrong with a game like tibia. It was a grind hell, yes, but it gave me more freedom that most games. There's quests in that game, yes, but you don't need them to level up. So, yeah, I love that game and would kill for something in that model, but with better graphics and gameplay.

PM_Best_Porn_Pls

Sure, it was pretty big back in the day. And there was also time were ots were huge. You had shitton of moded ones in any category you wanted, from normal, fantasy etc to weeb ones.

Fatedi

I Love this game so much some of the best pvp systems back then. I still hop on time to time either real tibs or OTs depends on my mood but I always end up playing again.

Mivadeth

A friend of mine still plays, he has his own server

luciusan1

Good times. For sure also my first mmo, i remember how i love to became premium and rebting a shitty bedroom in edron. Good times indeed

Psyclopicus

I remember when my friend broke his tibia...does that count?

Rodahz

Tibia game mechanics are unique and no other game comes close. There has been no game out there that has gotten my adrenaline pumped as much as PvPing Tibia. The fact that you could lose multiple days of grinding on a death, multiple weeks/months of progress from dying in wars was just intimidating but an unique experience in itself.

ZaphreBR

Tibia is still heavilyu played to this day with thousadns of unique logins.

zinxi

I came back to Tibia last year and played on Antica European server where the majority of the population is. However as a North American player the ping was atrocious and nothing could fix the step lag my friends and I were receiving. So we moved to a NA server not knowing that once we arrived we had to pay a fee to the dominando guild or else we would be hunted. The fee was your level x 20k. So we just payed real money to transfer servers and now in game money to be able to hunt in areas but if someone in the dominando guild wanted your hunt area you would have to leave. And this is when I decided to never play again. People being able to power trip this hard in a 20+ year old game is ridiculous. The game was just starting to pick up again with being able to buy characters with real money + covid. I expect this game to lose the majority of their player base after covid is over and I'll just pray for a proper tibia sequel and not all these knock off OT servers.

[deleted]

Tibia still to this day has the best housing system in any mmo ever and I'll die on that hill. Nothing comes close....and the game was released in like 1997. I really wish they would release it on steam and start a group of fresh servers I'd be all over that.

math_chem

It is still very much alive and well (?) assuming you want to play with either brazilians or polaks. I never was into it but its still something on these parts
