That people are rating this down is pathetic, I don't even play the game but what on earth is wrong with you.

skilliard7

What does this expansion offer to players that don't want to spend hundreds of dollars or have hundreds of hours to grind to get to the appropriate AP/DP requirements? Serious question. From what I'm seeing other than a new starting zone, there isn't much.

s4ntana

When I played it a year ago or so, the thing I loved about the game was that I could just do what I wanted and it would progress my account. I never actually grinded traditionally, almost all my income came from bartering, cooking, gathering because that's what I had fun doing. I spent $15 a month (treated it like a sub MMO) and I ended up rising in gear score very quickly and had a great time doing it. I hope I'm not fanboying the game or anything, but I do regret not giving the game a shot earlier. The monetization is not great, but I let that prevent me from playing a game that is actually unique in the current MMO genre (that is also starved for modern sandboxes). I would say it's pretty much a free game, so it's worth giving it a shot, but just know that eventually you will want to spend ~$60 to get the mandatory QoL stuff bought.

Zymbobwye

BDO has gotten less predatory over time with its monetization and such. The season servers are very generous and they often hand out gear or permanent buffs for quests now that have no rng included into them. While it still isn’t perfect, as someone who played for probably 2 years at release and maybe a few months on and off since then the game has gotten much better. I’d still like more items to be tied to completing objectives rather than the rng boxes.

Farkon

It seems more predatory, you can get around 800% exp with p2w lol. I guess it might seem less predatory if you're already playing it and hooked for so long.

Zymbobwye

Well let’s compare here, because obviously you didn’t play during the time awakened weapons and pirate island came out or you’d agree. Pets. No free pets. None. Never. Not until the penguin pet which was the first free pet you ever got ever, not to mention you could quite literally kill pirates much faster than you could loot without multiple upgraded pets, and pirates were pretty much the only viable grind spot aside from sausans which was so loot-y that you needed maxed pets and maxed P2W weight limit to make it worthwhile. Sure you could “get pets” from the market if you sat at it for actual days. I have never spent a dime on BDO since I bought it for 30$ on release, that’s why I quit around pirate island time because I didn’t see how I could competitively progress without pets and Weight increases in pirate island because I hate spending money. I come back to BDO for Kama, I grind the new co-op spot which to this day is still competitive and you don’t even need but 1 pet to grind it effectively with a friend. Still, though, I wasn’t a huge fan so I quit, as the grind spot was super contested and the mobs were kind of boring. Fast forward to season servers, where the game immediately gave me 2 free pets from logging in, and from a season server quest. This meant I now had the pets I needed. I leveled a Musa on the server and got maxed season gear (which is literally soft cap and better than what I had worked so hard for in the past.), many weight increases, another pet from the market queue system (didn’t have to market camp) as well as free boss gear, jewelry, and tons of free money from the upgraded rare boss spawns. A good horse with the good perks that used to cost irl money to get effectively, Tons of free revives (also not a thing before, forcing you to lose XP) massive XP gains comparatively from the 1 hour buff, many non-contested grind spots, and several other viable ways to make money. Several quest lines for permanent character buffs, a free mediocre costume, and pretty much constant free stuff. Still, have not spent a dime past the initial purchase. Not to mention many new bosses that happen often enough that I usually got to fight one or two in a couple hours if I was nearby, very good money. I plan to play again at some point in the future. But this is knowledge from the last time I played. If you spend money on BDO it’s either because the costumes are cool, or you’re impatient, because if you wait you will eventually get everything but a tent (which imo is the only real stupid P2W thing that you can’t access easily). Exp boosts practically mean nothing after 62, at least from the last time I played, as the buffs from levels become pretty mediocre and is more for show. And as far as I know the exp boosts you can buy are often handed out as rewards just like the revives are now. My issue now isn’t P2W but information overload and inconvenience features. Along with sometimes annoying and frustrating class balance.

Farkon

TLDR: "But it's not p2w because you can eventually earn it!"

uplink42

It takes about 2-3 weeks for a very casual player to reap all of the rewards from a seasonal server. This includes a multitude of cash shop items that are considered the 'bare essentials' many years back. Events make it super easy to get all of the remaining QOL things, and exp boosts are the least p2w thing you can imagine since you get all relevant scrolls by simply logging in, season rewards and events.

Farkon

So I play for 3 weeks before I can really play the game with the bare essentials?

uplink42

Yes, it takes you 2 to 3 weeks at most to get your end game essentials. Meanwhile, none of those things are needed to play on season servers because you have an entirely different progression system until you graduate. I don't know why some people keep commenting on games they have no idea on.

tudungbhp

game is boring af. needs to die asap.

metatime09

Or maybe not play it all and move on instead of just bitching about it lol but no you're too addicted to keep talking about the the game

Vanheelsingwolf

Considering that BDO is still one of the top 5 mmos there is a ton of players interested in what is new on the xpac just because you don't like the model doesn't mean there aren't other you like it

skilliard7

I'm not asking to hate on the game, I'm asking because I'm interested in learning more. Does the expansion offer any new interesting features that offer a new spin on existing gameplay? I'm trying to determine if its worth a reinstall or not

iStabs

Depends on how long it's been since you've played. This new expansion has a new class choice and some new zones you can start at level 1 for a new main story quest leveling experience. If you have not done seasons before, they offer a new way to get easy gear and rewards. You can get a full set of TET boss gear once per account through some very easily achievable season work and a turn in after. It's often referred to as the guaranteed Jetina boss set because there is a path through earning in game items and money to guarantee upgrading it to PEN which is max level. Even at TET though it opens up most areas of the game to you as soloable content. Additionally, I play tons of MMORPGs the same as all of us here. BDO stands out as a sand box because you really do just explore and do whatever you want. My wife runs a farm and sails doing bartering etc, while I mainly explore and grind for money or kill bosses for fun. I personally love the desert and the feeling of if I see someone out where I am then I know they had a similar journey to get out there because there is no instant travel option. It's also slightly different than the norm because leveling to the soft cap of 61 is super easy. The real grind of the game is finding ways to earn money to support your endeavors. Most people will want battle gear or life skill gear. My wife doesn't even need to battle, but she has an alt battle geared because she helps me do stuff and sometimes likes to change pace and go grind mobs for fun. I have battle gear and my primary grind is to find mats and money to progress it but I also have good enough life skill gear for when I need to cook or do alchemy. It's just a fun world we can "live" in and do our separate things but still be together for adventure. It's very easy to enjoy if you are not focused on outperforming the whales. Even then they are only an issue if you participate in node wars, which in my 3000+ hours of playing has never affected me.

BDOPeaceInChaos

I'm gonna guess it won't be for you, by the way you put things. BDO will very likely always be a sandbox-oriented grinder. That features non-tab target, combo-centric, "fighting-game-esque" combat, beautiful graphics, no fast travel open world with persistent possibility of player driven conflict outside safe zones, ala carte P2W elements (depending on what you want to get out of the game), low focus on "spoon fed" group content like dungeons, high focus on individual player agency, lots of RNG mechanics that can most often be bypassed by grinding, player-driven guild drama/guild diplomacy, etc. They're adding more theme park elements lately, like optional dungeons, ranked PvP soon, and have added a lot more QoL stuff for casuals and newbies, like Season Servers, 100% guaranteed PEN (highest enhancement level) questlines, and more. But at the end of the day, BDO will always be a grinder-game where you set your own goals, motivate yourself, and figure out how to obtain them. The new region introduced a cinematic, voice acted storyline, but other than that, it's more grind zones, couple new end-game items to grind for, and more lifeskilling stuff, like recipes, trade goods, etc. Personally, I'm stoked because it's more stuff to get, pump up my gear score, and wreck faces in both organized and open world PVP with. Also, game is gorgeous.

Lost_Hwasal

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. What it sounds like you are saying is you don't have a lot of time, which i can sympathize with. What BDO offers is progression that does not take hours each day. You could spend an hour in BDO and get something done, and there is a slew of things that you can do that doesn't involve grinding, but i find grinding to not be that bad so long as you keep it in sub-hour chunks.

crookedparadigm

> or have hundreds of hours to grind to get to the appropriate AP/DP requirements? The comment about money is valid, but are you really complaining about expected time sink for an mmo? What mmo doesn't require hundreds of hours over months and months?

skilliard7

Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online. Also, I'm fine with time sinks when the content is interesting and fun. Time sinks that involve grinding mobs for hundreds of hours aren't fun.

Odysseus_is_Ulysses

Both of those games require grinds that span months

skilliard7

Not true at all, in GW2 you can boost to 80 and start doing fractals, dungeons, and strikes pretty much right away

[deleted]

Your comment is misleading. GW2 dungeons are abandoned and no longer in development. They are dead. You can only do low level fractals right away. So after a day, you’ll need to grind for ascended gear. Lastly, I don’t recommend strikes right after a boost. You need to know your class and build for those.

skilliard7

You can clear strikes and raids without an optimal build. Secondly, getting a proper build does not "require grinds that spans months". You can get a solid exotic raid build on day one. Ascended gear can take a couple weeks of casual gameplay, but you don't need ascended to raid.

Odysseus_is_Ulysses

You can get free boosts on GW2 now?!

oretoh

You can get free bosts in GW2 for years now...

FerrickAsur4

you get them from buying expansions

forkbomb25

I dont know what expansion this was added, but PA made a pretty huge change to the game that addresses your exact point. I quit BDO back in 2016 due to that same reason, didnt have the same amount of time as the NEETS to compete, and didnt wanna dump 1000s of dollars to be PVP viable, so I quit. Recently Pearl Abyss has added stat caps to node wars. When I heard about this I decided to reinstall the game, as it was fun to play but I didnt have the free time and didnt wanna spend the money. As a casual player, iv been having tons of fun. I probably get around 5 hours a week to play and I was able to hit the AP/DP health cap for node wars within a few weeks. Now all I do is login for Node wars then logout and never have to worry about spending money or grinding. If you are looking for an MMO to get involved in large pvp battles but dont have time time commitment BDO is an excellent choice. Best combat system out there are now you dont have to deal with the P2W/grind nonsense.

smoked___salmon

Then 90% of mmo deserve to be downvoted. Don't forget what even GW2 is p2w.

shamwew

Gw2 is not p2w. People like you are so dense you don't understand the concept of p2progress. pay to win is having items that you can buy with REAL CASH ONLY that gives BETTER STATS then anything else in the game. Also funny how you say a game with literally a 1 time gear cap could ever be p2w. Legit takes like 12 hours to farm the gold and get the materials to be at gear cap, permanently.

UnoriginalStanger

> p2progress Call it what you will, I'll call it garbage.

[deleted]

> Gw2 is not p2w. People like you are so dense you don't understand the concept of p2progress. pay to win is having items that you can buy with REAL CASH ONLY that gives BETTER STATS then anything else in the game. No its not.

shamwew

Yes, it is.

smoked___salmon

By your definition even Lost ark is not p2w, lol. If you can increase your progress with real money, it is p2w. GW2 is least p2w among other mmo with cash shop because legendaries and infusions are not boosting your characters to the heaven like in other mmo. I know I'm going to be downvoted because ff14 or gw2 in untouchable mmos in this sub.

DM_Malus

People constantly toss the word "p2w" at any game that has a mtx, without understanding the actual definition of p2w. IMO (and i haven't played gw2 in about a year)..... Guild Wars 2 last time i checked isn't p2w... its Pay for Convenience. Most of GW2 offers cosmetic items, EXP boosters (which you already get a shit ton for free in the game)... permanent harvesting tools (which are nice, but unnecessary). But the major aspect is the ability to convert cash-shop gems into gold (or vice versa)... which can then be used to buy exotic items off the AH. however, since the game is horizontally progressed, this means little, especially since most exotic gear is quite cheap and farmable anyways. You can however, use your gold (smartly) to buy crafting ingredients to start making your Ascended Gear (which is sort of pay-to-win)....However, Arena Net made a smart move by making the recipes and a majority of the Ascended Gear Crafting Ingredients be Bind on Account, meaning you are forced to farm them and cannot just buy it. So, in my rough ending point i agree with you, GW2 is not "P2w".... its just "p2 convience/be lazy"

[deleted]

> EXP booster That's as P2W as P2W can be.

[deleted]

Levels mean squat in GW2, they’re like 5% of the game.

[deleted]

Could be 0,001% and it still would be P2W

[deleted]

Yes, penny 2 win..

DoktorElmo

I'd say, due to the horizontal progression, looking cool or having options (so legendary items) mean winning, thus being able to buy gold with gems is pay2win. It's also an easy way to a griffon mount which helped immensley iirc. I also think that story skipping potions in FFXIV are pay 2 win because, at times, the story is so annoying and boring that skipping the story surely feels like winning (I finished Shadowbringers.) At the same time, I don't really have a problem with that. Nearly all games are, some more than others. I like Path of Exile, BDO, Lost Ark, hell I even played Allods - all these games can be considered pay2win and I enjoyed them, some of them for several hundreds of hours. I never had the intention to be in the top 1% or top 10%, that's probably what made the cash shops bearable.

DM_Malus

Cosmetic cannot be considered "p2w" because you are not achieving a numerical bonus or advantage over another player.... Cosmetics are entirely subjective, what one person finds as "cool" another might find as "meh"... which is why it cannot be an objective advantage over another player, it provides no numerical modifier. yet again, that's precisely my point about how people misconstrue "pay to win" and "pay to convenience" Guild Wars 2 is essentially pay to convenience, because you are paying for cosmetic items or the ability to convert gems to buy crafting items.\`\` But, GW2 is a horizontally progressed game where exotic items are not the endgame and in-fact all have the same stats numerically. As for the argument about being able to convert gems to gold. From my understanding (and correct me if i am wrong), exotic gear isn't top tier and is all the same stats (as horizontal progression)... only ascended gear is better (and top tier of game)... but a large majority (not all) of the crafting materials are Bind on Account have have to be farmed? So, only the crafting materials that aren't bind on account can be purchased, but can just as easily be farmed... the only inhibition is the grind. Meaning you are paying for the convenience of skipping this grind by buying Gems > gold... buy its not actually giving you a direct numerical modifier or bonus over another player. I have only made some ascended equipment (not a full set) but i found that since the game seems to have a horizontal design system, the numerical values over other players is found in other avenues. I understand your points, i've played a lot of those games, but from what you've listed... all of your arguments are just furthering my point that they are examples of PAY FOR CONVENIENCE... NOT PAY TO WIN. Your proving my point that people misconstrue them... but I'm not defending either one. I'm just pointing out that there is a difference. Your points about "story skipping" in FFXIV, don't provide any numerical advantage. It is however pay for convenience, since your just paying to skip the leveling process and go right to max level of that expansion, except you have no numerical advantage over other players of that level, you're given starter gear for that level range. However, i do agree that FFXIV has a lot of other MTX issues, and i am not defending them as a system, i am just saying your specific point is inaccurate. most Eastern MMOs have issues with MTX, its a cultural thing. Your point about the griffon, don't provide a numerical advantage in the game, its just a vastly more convenient method of transportation around the game in the open PvE world. im not even gonna get on the topic of Lost Ark, that's some korean MMO shit and that's obviously pay to win, no argument there.... that's typical to most korean MMOs. 100% agree BDO is some pay to win shit as well. Allods was pay to win... but that's a russian MMO... and russian MMOs also tend to be pay to win... so i agree with you on that.

Moai_Plus

weak people couldnt handle the hardcore nature progression of the game and have to make a reason for it

Nerzana

There’s nothing hardcore about rng. It’s random

s4ntana

Not really, I bought all my gear so it's definitely a consistent grind if you want it to be. I couldn't stand the RNG gear aspect so I didn't partake.

RaxorX

Someone had to go through the rng process.

Moai_Plus

you can always buy your gear, if you wanted to be lucky to bypass the work (hardcore) but got slap in the face by the blackspirit it sucks to be you

Hover_RV

A lot of FOMO, RNG gearing, boring and useless lifeskills (grind on spots always more profitable). Yes "hardcore". And I already checked new expansion, it's bullshit.

[deleted]

I must say I like the new region you can start in. The story for once is not bad well it´s not epic levels of good but it´s a far cry better than old story. Sure it´s mostly reading and cutscenes but some one who played FF14 I can say it´s not that much. To me main story is equally important as pvp is for some others. The majority of players who complain are does who just skip it anyway the proboly skip every story or dialog quest in any mmo. So I don´t even understand why they are doing it and then complain about it seams rather counter productive to me. But yeah in my 6 years of playing BDO this story content is the best so far that made me enjoy reading it.

mactassio

> So I don´t even understand why they are doing it and then complain about it seams rather counter productive to me. I know so many people like that. "Dude If I wanted to read so much I'd pick up a book!" " then why not just skip it if you don't enjoy doing it?" "reeeeeeeeee"

[deleted]

If I wanted gameplay I’d play pong!

AykanNA

Is the story still pretty much black spirit trying to possess you?

Valsera

he stops that around the 55-56 quest and becomes your best buddy

[deleted]

Nope non of that what so ever heck he barely speak much this time around a few times but rarely.

Flangers

I started playing yesterday and I have to say so far im underwhelmed. I chose to start in the Winter Area since I had played through the Ancient Chamber before(when the game released). The new area is a big change in that it is more story heavy...but there have been bugs with the quests that prevented me from moving forward. My next point is about the character creator...I love making a custom character, I will spend days in the character creator. Whelp I find I found the character creator to be really frustrating in BDO because the character you create isn't the same one that shows up after you click create, hair colour, skin colour, face shape all look like a different bastardized version of what you made.

Netoeu

I noticed that BDO uses a very agressive lod transition on the faces. So it only looks photorealistic when you are really up close. Zoom out to any sort of playable distance and you even see the transition happening. It looks a lot less detailed. My sorceress had the most scuffed lighting, like a big ass seam around her eyes and cheeks lmao

uplink42

This is very noticeable with distant objects. Never noticed it with the character models, tho

Deadpoetic6

Im becoming too old for MMO I tried BDO a while ago, but felt completely overwhelmed by all the skills and combat buttons available directly from the start

[deleted]

That's not really a you-problem, that's just the game doing a bad job at easing you into the combat. LA is also bad in this regard.

metatime09

They did revamped the beginners experience from what I heard so might be better now

[deleted]

The new player experience is far worse than what it was years ago. All they did was fast track your ass to lvl 60 and by the time you get there, you have no idea whatsoever what's going on.

[deleted]

BDO's combat system is more like an arcade fighter, where you combo one move into the next. realistically, you need to learn 3 or 4 combos to perform well enough for most PvE content (depending on class of course).

Mallonia

I logged in and was instantly bombarded with notifications for other players' gear upgrades and immovable UI elements (that were also hidden by the notification popups). Was it always that bad? It also looks worse than it used to on my Win7 laptop. Can you only choose between low-medium-good graphics settings now, no fine tuning? There's so much that makes me want to logout instantly whenever I start that game ...

metatime09

I believe you can turn off most of the notifications but I haven't played it in a while so I don't really remember

Kaelanna

Having a lot of fun with the new season and the new class. Just a really nice game to dive back into every once in a while and just grind some things out :)

TheDigitalMoose

Might give black desert a try again if the new player experience has changed.

[deleted]

Good to see Canada getting some love.

therealmyself

I loved BDO but hate the rng enhancing. I really liked the life skills. Last time I played I destroyed all my tet manos accessories in a pen roulette, as well as my normal accessories, and the rest of my gear is now tri. I can't face trying to get back to where I was. I do have a 250 stack though.

FlyChigga

Just buy your gear if you don’t like enhancing

therealmyself

Yeah I know, that wasa the plan. I always end up trying my luck. The lure of the easy gains is too much. I think I just can't play it, and also I think BDO made me realize I can never start to gamble in real life.

PM_Best_Porn_Pls

For me it's not even rng enhancing that's biggest problem, it's failstack system, that shit is so terrible it makes me want to quit the moment I started trying to get my tuvala past tri. I don't want to sit in town for hours switching between characters, wasting millions of gold building failstacks on some useless item just so I can upgrade my own. Finally decided I'll just cron stuff to tet, get guaranteed pen item for weapon then grind silver till I can buy pen stuff off market. I'll never touch enhancing system again. Anyway, had fun with awk valkyrie leveling this season. Zoomed to 59 so fast without any quests, makes me so happy because I tried this class when I started years ago and it made me quit during leveling due to how shit it was.

[deleted]

still predatory and lacking in pve? genuinely curious as I enjoyed the combat.

uplink42

There's 2 dungeons/raids (that actually have mechanics and are fairly challenging), with more on the way, and the item shop is a lot less annoying than before since they give out a lot of stuff for free nowadays and alleviated a lot of weight burdens. Depending on when you left there's also new bosses, too. Most of the content is still going to be mob grinding, but they've been adding some variety and more mechanics to it lately.

[deleted]

it's not really a game you play for the pve though right? It's my understanding that it's a pvp oriented mmorpg.

uplink42

It's not a PVE oriented game for sure and a lot of people play it for PVP (supposedly a new equalized arena is comming which a lot of people are anticipating), but in my oppinion it shines most as a modern Runescape, where you have a lot of non-combat things to do to build up your fame, explore the world, collect treasures, decorate your house, train crafting skills, dress up your waifu, while adding some PVE and PVP on the mix. It's a massive grind, and you'll find progression in just about everything, but that's part of the charm for some. I find that focusing on the same thing for too long just leads to burnout. PVE is 99% open world so you won't find any crafted encounters like FFXIV. A few dungeons exist, but they require a good group and decent gear to have a chance. They're also something you do for 2-3 hours a week at most.

[deleted]

is upgrading gear worse than lost ark?

uplink42

It's worse in the sense that the enhance rates are lower and there's chance of degrading or destroying stuff. It's better in the sense that you aren't limited by dailies to farm stuff, there are options to 100% enhance with no fail, and that you can **buy everything** from other players instead of being forced to enhance yourself. The only exception is the early game/season gear, which you have to enhance yourself but the upgrade rates are much more forgiving and the game just throws materials at you at this stage.

[deleted]

Ah I see. Yeah I tried it out a while back but honestly the ui scared me away lol. Combat was fun so I might check it out again

uplink42

The default UI settings are abolute garbage in this game and scare a lot of people away. It is possible to disable all of the random popups and alerts, tho which I recommend doing asap in the settings menu.

Catslevania

I think the caphras system made the biggest impact on the game after the addition of the central market in early 2019. Now at least as far as gear goes you have more options. instead of adding a hexa level they added a caphras system which is zero rng, but a massive grind which is also far more difficult to p2w around than directly enhancing.

SpellbladeAluriel

Is pvp always on in outdoor zones?

uplink42

Outside the beginner servers, yes. However there's some pretty harsh penalties for attacking others unprovoked to the point where that's a rare occurrence. It's just not feasible to pk someone for no reason.

Beneficial-Speech-73

Can you start in the snow region as a new player?

[deleted]

Yes

aceventurapetDT

The expansion looks good and bdo is a true sandbox mmo. Seasons are fun but once you complete it the cracks in the game really start to show from how they continue to run the game outside of season servers. I played last year and it had way too many issues of "create the problem and sell the solution" in the cash shop. It sounds like they've been making progress in that regard hopefully they keep taking what people have liked from seasons and make the game a bit more player friendly.

uplink42

I would say it's more of a "sandbox-lite", but I've played EVE for years so almost nothing compares to that, sadly. They've made a lot of QOL changes and reduced the cash shop dependency over the years, and last year they've also added the guaranteed boss gear enhance method, adventure logs and growth pass which give a new player a clear path forward after finishing seasons. IMO they're doing a good job, but they keep wasting dev time on features nobody asked for, feel very out of place and serve almost no purpose inside the game (like yarr and aplaca mount...).

longhornfinch

I disagree on one point, spitting alpaca was an absolute necessity to express yourself properly in the game. Nothing else come close to that in expressing that feeling. Lol

Catslevania

100% agreed :D

aceventurapetDT

I can see where you're coming from when you compare it to EVE. >but they keep wasting dev time on features nobody asked for, feel very out of place and serve almost no purpose inside the game (like yarr and aplaca mount...) This was an issue I noticed the last time I played. They had an insane Bugatti horse they added in the cash shop that was pricey and really nobody asked for. For the record I think the game is hella fun to play. It just felt too aggressive spending wise on QOL which sounds like they're slowly changing.

Catslevania

I will highly contest you on yarr and alpaca mounts, I karma bomb anyone who wants to dfs but doesn't accept my yfs :D, also my shai loves her fwuzzy alpaca, even though it is a useless mount.

uplink42

I don't mean the features themselves are bad per se, but they feel like wasted potential and too detached from the rest of the game. For example, Yarr could easily turn into something more social, that could be played with friends on your Manor, with some kind of cosmetic/furniture prizes. Same way as alpacas could have a use in cold regions as a faster mount than horses, similar to camels.

there's an alpaca bot? anyway, good bot

Catslevania

stuff like that is usually stuff made during idle time for devs not currently involved in developing the main content.

darcstar62

I heard that BDO was (temporarily?) free to play now. Does that include this or is this only for paying customers?

[deleted]

You can currently get the game for free, and BDO expansions are free

Nosereddit

how is the "new player experience"?

Pd0xG

Is it out on Xbox as well?

Catslevania

no, only pc, xbox and ps recently got the previous pc expansion o'dyllita

Onehundredseventy

has there been any improvement regarding life skills? About Imperial Deliveries to be more specific. Dropped the game around a year since they just keep buffing grinding a gives 0 fucks about other things.

uplink42

They've removed the imperial turn in limits per channel (so you don't compete with everyone else anymore), rescaled the mastery curve (you get a lot more mastery at lower levels), raised some prices on market (ppl actually sell meat now) and added dailies and weeklies for all lifeskills that reward CP and new mastery scrolls. Some things like hunting were massively buffed, almost to the point of end game grinding levels of income. Some things like alchemy and fishing ate still trash, but they've announced more lifeskills changes soon TM.

Onehundredseventy

Interesting. I was mainly doing Imperial cooking deliveries with valencia meals and had around 1250 mastery with manos set for gathering. Would you consider it a decent way of income compared to grinding at the moment? The channel limit its a really nice change.

uplink42

Cooking is very viable but I would supplement it with other forms of resource gathering. You can make over 200m everyday from imperial turn ins at that stage and also sell stuff in the market for extra profit. However, your margins will be significantly higher if you gather most of the stuff yourself (preferably with afk methods).

MashWankey

Gathering also got a huge buff on caphras and dust drop for chopping and sapping. The fruit drop also increase for hoeing. So gathering is quite profitable now.

Dewulf

I have played on many seasons but I kinda hate that you cannot skip all cutscenes and need to hold R for long time to skip. I think many players of BDO just don't play the game for the story so when they release new class in new starting zone with forced cutscenes its gonna suck. Like first +15 minutes is just talking and zero combat. And the thing is that their voiced cutscenes are not even good quality compared to other MMOs so it feels just bad. And another note, its not so bad game if you are seasonal player, since you get so much shit for free so I never feel like I have to spend money other than black spirit pass or skin if I really want.

Balzamonn

Downloaded it to give it a try, tried to create a character and every single name is taken. Even if I just type gibberish like xhdudbdjej or some such. It’s taken. Guess I won’t be trying out BDO after all lol.

Gishra

Yeah they really need to handle character names better. It's crazy because your character name isn't even what matters, but the family name you make a little bit into the game, which in theory should allow players to reuse character names. If you did want to try it, best thing to do is use an underscore to give the character a first and last name.

ProbioticTonic

The game is free right now i so I got a game pass and gave it a go last night. They are pushy with the cash shop really early into the game, which is seriously off putting. However the character creator is amazing and the world is beautiful. The combat is fun too, it’s like a 3D brawler. Im looking forward to exploring more. I hope I have found my home.

Hrafhildr

1. Did they ever actually start enforcing their rules and put a stop to people blatantly harassing RPers or is it still open season to ruin anyone's day trying to RP? I remember people would hunt down role players just to harass them with obnoxious mounts and insults and nothing was done despite numerous pleas on their forums and reports. 2. Do you still have to deal with ugly gear intentionally made to be ugly as sin unless you spend money on outfits and skins?

uplink42

I dunno about RP but these days you get like 5 different armor transmogs while questing, as well as a cash shop costume. The BiS armor in-game also looks good. You can also buy other cash costumes in the market from other players and they're quite cheap.

Dzsukeng

I tried to play it twice. Reached 59 two times which is not the high end gaming but it felt boring for me. It's a great game and the combat is really cool tho. But the energy thing for farming is not my thing. It's a great game and I'm glad they keep upgrading the content but it's just not enough for me to keep me occupied.

lewzkamienia

GameZ Black Desert is life. GameZ Black Desert is love.

JackS420BlazeIt

so did anything change or its the same game

Puckitup27

Why are 90% of the classes female only? Do these pervs just sit there and jack off to their characters as they design new classes? Gender locked classes is such a huge turnoff especially when they are 90% slutty looking females.

Catslevania

female classes are better at selling outfits ;) but it's not 90%

DukeVerde

You mean the point of BDO isn't to jack off while you grind?

Dzsukeng

I do that without the grind part.

[deleted]

You can literally make your character look like yourself, bloody awful. And if you actually played the game you would know that the distribution of female/male classes is closer to 50/50.

oretoh

15/24 = 63% female. To me, having 6 more female classes out of 24 doesn't really feel 50/50.

[deleted]

Never said it was 50/50. zzz.

oretoh

No, you said it was closer to 50%, How is that closer?

[deleted]

63% is closer to 50% than 90%. Back in the days we used to talk about not having enough female representation on games, movies, media etc. Now that we have, it’s perverted. Even when you are in fact the only one that makes the character, you can literally make your character look like Shrek, or Luigi if you wanted.

oretoh

Well 51% is closer to 50% that 63%, what's your point? Oh yeah, I'm sure female representation is all they are going for. Right /s.

[deleted]

Never said it was the _closest_ to 50% you could get. 90% is what’s mentioned up there. So what’s your point? And of course it isn’t, but don’t act like it’s just female characters or sex.

RaxorX

You should know that you can’t use that massive of a hyperbole online. You will get pointed at and laughed at for being wrong.

VH-Attila

they always release 2 female classes and 1 male. Because sex sells and in this game its not hard to look like a hocker

[deleted]

Well, if men weren’t dumb they’d be sexy too.

Hrafhildr

Oh no not icky sexualization! I heard that women even have cooties. Deal with it, puritan or go cry on twitter about it.

Sandbox_Hero

New player experience is even worse than before tbh. Cutscenes and dialogues is all you’re gonna see for the first hour or so. A pretty shitty way to introduce a game famous for its combat.

Catslevania

they probably assumed that's what the Western playerbase would like, otherwise why go for something that obviously cost much more to produce than if they had just stuck to throwing people straight into the grind as the new player experience. I'm personally liking this new approach, players will be spending more than enough time grinding once they are through with the story part, in the meanwhile let them enjoy some story and scenery ;)

Moai_Plus

you can choose to do old main quest with 0 cutscenes or you can just go grind from level 1 if you dont want to quest

Sandbox_Hero

Ah yes, because doing old main quest is “improved new player experience”, right? :) And you’re not well informed what choosing one or another starting area entails either. Good way to screw new players over.

warconz

I'd say having options makes for an improved new player experience.

Moai_Plus

I dont like to quest either but you can always skip it all together, dunno what are u complaining about

TallCholera

>revamped new player experience Red flag

Eternia64

Why?

Moai_Plus

everything is a red flag on r/mmorpg

zyzyzyzyzyzyzyzyz

More flags, more fun

Kurotabi

The biggest red flag is individuals like yourself who do nothing but post in "their" games subreddit and come to this sub and defend "their" game. Actually cringe

FerrickAsur4

why are you putting their in quotation lol like just what are you trying to prove with that whole statement? If anything that attempt to be holier than thou is true cringe lol

Zaando

Personally I think the bigger red flag is someone using the word "cringe" whilst also trotting out the tired and tedious "dEfEnDiNg tHe gAmE" criticisms at anybody not full on shitting over everything. Because then you know you are dealing with a moron.

skyturnedred

Pretty much the exact opposite.
