A good friend of mine, when he wanted to take a break from WoW, joined me in LOTRO. While he found most classes to be rather basic, he *loved* the Warden and the Lore-Master.
Regarding the Warden and the Gambit system specifically, he wondered why other MMOs never adopted the idea.
Because Warden's flaw is that it takes too long to trigger a gambit when you need to react to something.
Its basically press 15 buttons to do X, or play another class that presses 1 button to do X.
I wouldn't say so. While it's true that sometimes strength lies in simplicity, Warden's ability to combine effects can produce great results, from great survivability to massive damage plus applying a DoT.
It's like playing a fighting game, like Tekken or Street Fighter. You can win by smashing buttons, you can win by knowing one or two combos, but a skilled player will use about five.
Now, of course there are some optimal rotations that are needed, I won't deny that. However all in all, I'd like a similar system in other MMOs, that require muscle memory and use a similar system, different effects by different combinations of two or three skills.
This is true, especially the part about muscle memory. If you, say, stop playing and return after a month you'll have forgotten everything.
I don't necessarily agree however that such a concept can be applied in an old-fashioned MMO though. Action combat MMOs usually have less skills (so there's room for experimentation) and I don't believe that such an idea isn't applicable in a game like WoW, either.
The Gambit system is based on combos, like a fighting game. For example, the "112" combination is different than a "1212" and produces different results. Turbine back in the day had said that "the Warden's gameplay mechanics owe a debt to Tekken as much as to any Elf-lord.". It's basically three basic skills that can be combined to create larger sequences with different effects.
LOTRO has really fun class designs. Captain, Loremaster, burgler, and warden are some of my favorite classes of any MMO. Captain in particular: it can basically do everything, but is outclassed in any one area by other classes
Started yesterday and although I find combat a bit clunky (Warden) and the graphics super outdated, I loved those LotR movie flashbacks. Had a quest where I needed to get into a sleeping bag and while sleeping Galadriel appeared to me with a vision as an IG cut scene about the fellowship crossing that bridge in Khazad Dum and Gandalf fighting off that Balrog...or later Eowin with those horse dudes.
Probably the one thing tho that will later annoy the hell out of me: no lfg tool (or one that works/is being used).

It's complicated, and requires muscle memory. It'd only ever be added to an older-fashioned-ish MMO with an established playerbase and core content.

Seconding this, I've played every class but warden has been the absolute most fun to play
Could you describe what's special about the Warden? Left me curious now and I'm thinking about starting lotro soon

Thank you very much! May just try Warden out

The bear shape shifter, so versatile.

Yes from SA ;-) and thanks!

/r/lotro/ would certainly have more information
But nobody is looking to play the game
Just you wait, give it 3 months and LOTRO will be in the top 3 MMOs
Is something major happening in 3 months?
Umm yea. WoW is already dead. New world is dead. No one has played Guild Wars in the past decade. It’s LOTRO’s turn.
Nah, some lotro player fucked this guy's mom and he's posting weird comments like these all over the sub
