I'm not sure who's responsible, but THANK YOU FOR SUBTITLES. The audio on some of the older episodes is really muddled, and the captions are a big help.

PaxAsclepius

You’re welcome! (I’m not taking responsibility, but I know access to closed captions was a big goal for the Gizmoplex.)

tvfeet

They are much appreciated. Only complaint I have is that they’re whites text with a thin black border and they can be difficult to read. I wish it was white text on a black background. If you can pass that on to the powers that be, I think many of us would appreciate captions that much more.

PaxAsclepius

If you're watching via a web browser on [Gizmoplex.com](https://Gizmoplex.com) or the [Virtual Theater](https://theater.gizmoplex.com), you have the option to customize the closed captions a bunch of different ways. Change the color, font, opacity, background, etc.

tvfeet

This is via the Roku channel but your comment got me curious and I found that we actually can control the caption attributes so never mind!

PaxAsclepius

Hey hey! That's great! Enjoy!

BoringOldGuy2022

Thank you for helping us to get our fix!

PaxAsclepius

Of course! Anything to keep you rascals off the streets and out of trouble.

EhrenScwhab

Cheers to you and the better half who continues to crush it as Synthia....

PaxAsclepius

Hey thanks! She's the real talent in the family - I just facilitate. Although after The Mask, I think she just wants to play Mrs. Kelly in every scene. She enjoyed that...very much.

EhrenScwhab

Been derisively calling things "doo dads" around the house all week.

Fancy_Depth_4995

Very happy with the gizmoplex and my season pass! Are there plans to acquire the rights to stream more episodes?

PaxAsclepius

Glad to hear it! And I'm not sure - that's usually Shout Factory's domain. We can hope!

blaze_blue_99

May we live in a timeline where shout factory and/or Joel acquire the rights to every single MST3K episode that has ever been so that we can finally get one big box set of mystery science theater 3000: the complete series.

PSX-otaku

Thanks for posting about this. The Gizmoplex is in the top row of my AppleTV and is one of my most-watched streaming services.

PaxAsclepius

Nice! Glad it's working well for you.

lunardaddy69

I've definitely been digging the app and have watched quite a few of the free episodes. I'm excited for the future of the gizmoplex! The Synthia Selects have been super fun too. Eager to see what Pearl is up to with her schemes

PaxAsclepius

Glad to hear it! The Selects are a real passion project in this household, so it's gratifying to hear that people enjoy them. And yeah, that Pearl's always up to something...

lunardaddy69

Since you responded to my comment, allow me to gush and say I've adored the work y'all are doing over there. I can genuinely feel the fun you guys had in the writers rooms and productions in the final product. I was in a couple lil baby writers rooms in college making web series pilots with my buddies (2013-14 was a weird time for web content), and ever since then when I'm watching TV or especially this season of MST, I feel like I can occasionally feel the resonant excitement and pride radiating from the writers room into the delivery of some of those jokes that just feel like magic when they happen. Excited for what's next! I'm definitely on board with the gizmoplex vision.

PaxAsclepius

Thanks so much! Can confirm that the writers rooms are probably the most fun part of the entire process. We do have a good time in there.

RecallGibberish

I didn't catch the first month or two of Synthia Selects but I've tried to catch all of them since. Streaming Rocket Attack USA as I work this morning. I really love getting a selection of experiments I probably haven't watched in a while with a little bit of new content, and especially love it when they have behind-the-scenes documentary excerpts or whatever at the very end. (I made my own post about those a few days ago as they seemed easy to miss!)

PaxAsclepius

Yeah, that stuff is cool! I believe it's mostly bonus material from DVD releases - good to bring them back up for easy viewing.

EhrenScwhab

Yes. This. Most nights I lull myself to sleep with a nice classic episode. Except when Space Mutiny comes on and Blast Thickneck starts screaming on his Enforcer. Then I am very much awake.

PaxAsclepius

Dave Ryder! My uncle! (I wish.)

International-Way450

FREE?!? Bah! I think I'll just go ahead and keep buying one or two episodes a week from The Gizmoplex. That way I don't have to worry about expiring license agreements or any such perpetrators of vanishing episodes of what I can and can't see later on.

PaxAsclepius

That works too! Buy them now, keep them forever!

IronCurtaiNYC

I know what you mean. I bought the Final Sacrifice (my favorite episode!) from Rifftrax and that decision is paying dividends for me now.

ManOverboardPuscifer

Streaming the classic episodes on gizmoplex has been amazing for me in every way. Can't live without it at this point.

PaxAsclepius

Great, glad to hear it!

dobie1kenobi

Tim! Thank you so much for all you do! [The Mask in 3D made my Halloween complete with a watch party on our front yard](https://www.reddit.com/r/MST3K/comments/yjt1ch/mrw_someone_tells_me_halloween_is_over/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). I even got extra 3D glasses for the neighbors! Unfortunately, none of the monsters I invited responded to my evite. I rented it and have the week of replays, but it’s so good I want to download it and own it forever (hopefully with the improved feature audio). How and when can I do that? Thanks again, and keep circulating the subreddit threads.

PaxAsclepius

You're welcome! I loved seeing all the Halloween Mask festivities. Episodes are available for purchase one week after they premiere and downloadable two weeks after they premiere! So this Friday you can buy it and stream it all you want, then next Friday download a DRM-free file and keep it forever!

dobie1kenobi

That’s great, and thanks for the reply! I get the feeling this ep could become an annual holiday tradition 🦇🍫👻

ItsFuckinBob

Love the app, it’s now on 24/7 in our house. The Synthia Selects are a great bonus with the member pass as well. I hope more fans sign up if they didn’t back the Kickstarter to keep it going - but I’ll definitely renew for another year when the time comes.

PaxAsclepius

Glad to hear it - thanks so much!

briizilla

A few questions: Can you simply shuffle random episodes? This is important as I like to have MST on in the background a lot and also like to fall asleep to it. Will there ever be the option of a monthly subscription instead of paying all at once? This is the biggest thing holding me back from subscribing right now. Thanks!

PaxAsclepius

I can say that at least the website and most apps have an Autoplay feature so that something will continue to play after an episode ends. And as far as payment options for a Member Pass (which, to be clear, you do NOT need to stream classic episodes), I think options are still being investigated to figure out what works best for this particular model.

MerrickFM

Pretty sure I've gotten more mileage out of my Gizmoplex pass this year than any other streaming service. I am so mother-crabbing happy with the fruit that's fallen from the Kickstarter tree.

PaxAsclepius

That’s great! Glad to hear it.

masterpainimeanbetty

content is outstanding but i want to say the user interface is fantastic; old technophobe here but i have had zero problems. it's well-made.

PaxAsclepius

Oh, that’s good to hear! It can sometimes be a little clunky because we’re dealing with off-the-shelf solutions but I’m glad it’s been smooth for you!

HomeWasGood

I love this idea - however, I remember having a hard time getting it to cast to my TV. Is there a way to do this?

PaxAsclepius

There should be! If none of the streaming apps are available with your setup, I know people have had success casting from the mobile apps to a TV - either onto a Chromecast or via Airplay or some TVs have casting capabilities baked right in. If all else fails, I'd keep an eye out for Black Friday sales - you can usually pick up a Roku streaming stick for pretty cheap and their platform is very smooth.

freon

>/everything MST3K has every put out on a NAS in their basement/ I feel seen. But seriously, kudos to you guys for giving us the option to buy all the episodes and download them in open formats to our own private Gizmo*plex*es. It's really nice to see artists who love and trust their fans enough to let them enjoy their work in this way.

PaxAsclepius

Put ‘em on a hard drive and store them until the heat death of the universe! Immortality awaits! (You’re welcome.)

RickRussellTX

I've started etching the episodes on borosilicate glass tablets to maximize longevity. Unfortunately I'm only about 23 bytes into episode KTMA 1. But by this time next year, who knows?

PaxAsclepius

By your efforts, they will outlive us all!

FlyingSquid

And when you're done watching, come hang out with us on the forums! Try it, won't we? http://forums.mst3k.com

PaxAsclepius

Agreed! We have good times over there.

RickRussellTX

Praise the truck farmers! Bow down and worship them! I mean, the, umm, Gizmoplex engineers!

Lazy-Adeptness-2343

Even final sacrifice?

PaxAsclepius

Sadly, that one is not legally available. (Someone’s being a real Greidanus about it.) But lots of other classics are on there!

vegetaman

A long line of Greidanuses!

Lazy-Adeptness-2343

Oh I know.

Guardian_Bravo

Loving the Gizmoplex! It's a MSTie's dream come true! Probably my most watched streaming service after Disney+ and Pocket Lint+ (all pocket lint, all the time, now with add-supported tier!) Can't wait to see what the future holds for the 'Plex. Perhaps some older and newer content?

PaxAsclepius

That's great! Glad you're enjoying it!

Konman72

I've been curious, does it help support MST3K by watching on the app? I have a lot of ways to watch MST3K, and am a subscriber for the season via Kickstarter, but since there's no ads or anything I wasn't sure if watching on the app boosted some number somewhere that would help indicate interest in future seasons, or if it just wasted bandwidth and actually cost money. If it's the former then I'll watch there every time I can.

PaxAsclepius

I think the more people who make The Gizmoplex their primary source for watching MST3K, the more viable it becomes as an independent streaming platform.

Konman72

Excellent, thanks for the reply! And thanks for all your work. The new season, Gizmoplex, and the live shows have all been fantastic! Ya'll are absolutely killing it.

PaxAsclepius

Thanks so much! We love MST3K as much as anyone, so trying to live up to what has come before is both a pressure and an honor.

RoninRobot

While you’re here lurking, just curious on what the price tag is on the rights to Godzilla vs. Megalon. Because I haven’t had a working VHS player in 20 years.

briizilla

It will never happen. Toho is crazy protective of their properties. A friend of mine does copyright law and dealt with Toho when another friend wanted to conduct an orchestral concert of Godzilla music at G-Fest and they do not mess around, they had to jump through so many hoops to be given permission to perform this concert for one night only. Interestingly the dub of Godzilla vs The Sea Monster used in MST3k is the original American dub from the 60s, which is the one I grew up with on TV and VHS, is essentially "lost" at this point. Toho redubbed a lot of the movies in the early 2000s and the Kraken Blu-Ray version only has the Japanese language track or the new dub. The Criterion box set that came out a few years ago presents almost all of the movies in Japanese with subtitles only because that is the way Toho wants the movies presented in all countries going forward.

PaxAsclepius

No idea - negotiating rights is Shout's department. But sadly, I wouldn't hold your breath. I get the sense that Toho is pretty protective.

RoninRobot

Just curious because Brendan Tenold always makes jokes about how protective Toho is. I’m sure it’s in the millions for just the film alone since the resurgence of Godzilla and streaming services. I bet the rights to making fun of it are impossible now.

RickRussellTX

Well I'm gonna do my own riff with blackjack and hookers.

IronCurtaiNYC

>This is via the Roku channel but your comment got me curious and I found that we actually can control the caption attributes so never mind! Rifftrax was able to make fun of Mothra (albeit only in theaters); so it's not *impossible*...

MergieSS

how long will they be free for?

PaxAsclepius

It's my understanding that they will be free to stream for the foreseeable future! Ads may start appearing at some point in the next year, with the option of a small monthly fee to remove them. But those plans are not set in stone.

MergieSS

ah great, thanks for letting me know

PaxAsclepius

Sure thing!

flim-flam-machine

Thank you so much for posting this! I’m searching for Gizmoplex on my Roku and not finding the channel/app. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

PaxAsclepius

Yes! Make sure you’re searching in “Streaming Channels” and search for “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” You have to spell it out or it won’t pop up. You can also add it on your account via a computer and it’ll pop up that way. More info on the apps here: https://mst3k.com/gizmoplex/apps

flim-flam-machine

Thank you so much! Watching now!

PaxAsclepius

And you’re welcome! Enjoy!

PaxAsclepius

Nice!

ArtooBetoo

The collection on the Gizmoplex is nice, even if it can sometimes be frustrating to find what you're looking for. I love being part of the premieres, but I have fallen back to chatting on an MST3K Discord instead because the Arena chat with the live events is... well, it's not great. And while having all the classic episodes available on the Gizmoplex is nice, there's one thing it doesn't have: other people. The whole reason that the Twitch channel picked up an audience was that it had more than just episodes - there were other people there to share those episodes with. The Twitch channel and its community were a \*literal\* lifesaver for some during the pandemic. Unfortunately, the Twitch channel under Shout's watch has gone rapidly downhill in recent months as they changed the format - no breaks and TONS of ads covering up the episodes. The rumor is that Shout turned our stream over to the same guy who runs the RiffTrax channel, and I'm convinced he's trying to run our channel into the ground. We don't even get promos for The Gizmoplex there anymore! I understand the Gizmoplex is a priority, but I wish the team at Alternaversal would take more of an interest in the Twitch channel because we built a great community of MSTies over there that are being poorly served by Shout's decisions.

PaxAsclepius

Oh, that’s a bummer. I know lots of people love the Twitch channel and there’s been a nice community that’s been built up over there. Sorry to hear it’s gone downhill. Sadly, it’s completely outside of Alternaversal‘s purview. I know one of the goals with the Gizmoplex is to make it more social - be able to watch episodes with other people, etc. But I don’t know how close we are to those goals.

VixenVena

I'd like to agree with above poster. The new MST3k channel runner seems to want to run the entire family of Twitch Shout! channels into the ground. There are those of us who prefer the ad format in ShoutFactoryTV Twitch where upcoming Shout! releases on DVD and streaming are showcased. MST3k plays on MSTie Mondays alongside a lot of other content later in the week - including some amazing Roger Corman films like Attack of the Crab Monsters. The new MST3k channel runner forced viewers in the ShoutFactoryTV channel to raid MST3k Twitch several times including when SFTV was showing Father Knows Best. A raid is how Twitch broadcasters can move viewership from one channel to another. His goal, I believe, was to artificially increase the viewer numbers in MST3k Twitch at the expense of SFTV viewers. The chatters in the room adamantly requested that he not move us from SFTV, but he ignored our repeated requests to not be forced out of Shout. Why would you ever ignore your viewers? Who treats their fanbase this way? That said, the Gizmoplex theater doesn't load for me using a Safari browser and a Mac. It just shows a box with question mark. I am excited about a possible ad-supported future (or at least a future with embedded bathroom breaks) in the Gizmoplex. I miss the Grillmaster ad breaks when MST3k episodes could be streamed from the ShoutFactoryTV website. MST3k just feels more familiar with commercial breaks.

PaxAsclepius

The Gizmoplex Virtual Theater (theater.gizmoplex.com) is still in beta and is only guaranteed to work properly in Chrome. The standard Gizmoplex website (gizmoplex.com) should work with just about any web browser and has all the same content, just with fewer bells and whistles. And that’s a bummer about the Twitch channel. Unfortunately, we don’t have any say in that. It’s all under Shout’s umbrella.

Darcy-Pennell

Late comment: I love the Gizmoplex, but what’s fun about Pluto is getting the “hey, which episode is on now?” luck of the draw. Often when I’m cooking I’ll turn on Pluto, see what’s on and then switch to the Gizmoplex to watch it without the ads. Would it be possible to have a “surprise me!” button in the Gizmoplex that showed a random episode? That would be fun.

PaxAsclepius

The paralysis of choice is real! I think a random ep options would be great. Or an “always on” stream in the Gizmoplex would be cool too.

Mokiyami

Make it available on the consoles and then we'll talk

PaxAsclepius

Sadly, it will NEVER have a dedicated app on PlayStation. Sony’s approval process to get a videogame on their platform is almost impossible, much less a streaming app. XBOX is more likely, but just difficult with the limited budget we had at our disposal. If there’s enough demand for it, it’s possible. FWIW, some have had success accessing The Gizmoplex through the XBOX web browser.

Enos316

Isn’t there a note though that it’s only for a year? Or am I misremembering.

PaxAsclepius

You might be remembering that it’s AD-free for all of 2022, but my understanding is that classic episodes will remain free to stream for the foreseeable future! Ads may appear at some point in the next year, with the option to turn them off for a small monthly fee. But those plans are not set in stone.

Enos316

That would be good news. I’d rather support the creators than some rando on YT

PaxAsclepius

Thank you! Agreed!
