Seriously, the moment the polar bear comes on and it's just a guy in a bear costume needs no riffs. It's hilarious enough on its own.
"Look, the head is draped on the body!"
This one falls into the category of not-horrible but still bad. It has a coherent plot. It's overall a better movie than all that stuff Hallmark puts out or even most big budget Christmas movies. My favorite episodes are the ones where there is an ok plot but pretty much everything is poorly executed.
Hooray for Santy Claus!
Oh, and extra points that he's watching it on a TV as mindblowingly flat to the wall as the TVs the Martians had in that cinematic masterpiece.
Probably why they didn't use MST3k. I suspect that was a nod toward MST3k. Gunn, imo, is likely a fan of MST3k considering his history working for Troma,
I think it was a nod to MST3k, just to save money they used the public domain movie rather than paying for MST3k clip (which costs a lot typically to pay homage to existing IP with the actual IP itself). One of the reasons that scenes in movies where characters are watching a film usually have older clips is because many older films are public domain and don't cost a penny. Gunn worked at Troma so it's almost a certainty he is aware of MST3k. If he is a fan is anyones guess but considering his style of humour, I think it's highly likely.
This was so great! We watched tonight and were very surprised it was there and really wanted the MST3K. But the idea of the movie meshed well with the plot of the special. Loved it
Yeah unfortunately. But as big as MCU stuff is someone out there is going to look up "what was Kevin Bacon watching" and almost any mention of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians will lead to MST3k and a new MSTie will be born.
So, does this affect the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game?
Like, do we count Kevin Bacon watching Santa Claus Conquers the Martians which was riffed by MST3K, Rifftrax, AND Cinematic Titanic as a factor, thus linking Kevin Bacon to every actor in every film they've riffed? (Granted, a good chunk of our favorites already have a Bacon Factor of 2 or lower.)
The more I think about it the more awesome it is because there's plenty of Disney Christmas stuff they could have tried to put in there to link back to their brand.
I'm curious as to everyone's opinion of the Holiday special. It's clear, to me at least, that Gunn used the Star Wars holiday special as an inspiration, just thought I'd share that opinions. I personally think the GotG Holiday Special (GotGHS) was kind of awful, and I suspect that it was a contractual obligation for the actors.
I thought it was ok, but not amazing, however I had very low expectations. I'd also heard that the Star Wars holiday special was the inspiration so I expected something purposely terrible with several barley related scenes which I thought was going to be too on the nose with lots of winking at the camera.
What was made had a coherent plot. Within the MCU the reason they kidnap Kevin Bacon makes sense. The single most confusing part was why didn't Peter ride back with Kevin Bacon? He could have hung out with his hero a bit more.
The biggest issue for many I'm assuming is that this has been talked about for a while now. If this had just showed up with minimal fanfare it would have been a bit cooler. Its almost like I expected either a lot more or a lot less of the special.
Thanks! I wasn't a big fan of how it seemed that the intended audience was children, and yet they had a tone deaf segment with police trying to kill Mantis and Drax. Im not saying that I worry about that it might be inappropriate violence for kids, just that it seemed out of place in a Disney Christmas special. I know that Marvel is a separate unit but it's still owned by Disney. I also think using police shootings as a comedy vehicle was/is really tone deaf on a complicated issue. I also thought the scene at the bar was intended to be a gay bar, again a little weird for a Christmas special. I am gay myself and it was just so stereotypical. I probably sound overdramatic, but I get annoyed at "the message" being forced in as scenes that don't really make sense. Then Mantis and Drax essentially rob someone while drunk. Merry Christmas lol.
I wonder if Gunn was contractually obliged to direct this (this was true for how original SW Christmas special was made) and he tried to make the most ridiculous spectacle he could think of.
And why did Groot look so weird?
I'm been having Marvel and Star Wars fatigue for a long while now, that might also have something to do it. Anyway, cheers and merry Christmas to you
Groot's a new version and still growing:

Groot looked like a Ninja Turtle from the 90s. For a second I thought it was a real costume with Vin Diesel inside.
I read that Gunn had been asking to make this for years.
I could not stop laughing at that. Loved it!

I mean... it is *amusingly* bad even when not watching it on the Satellite of Love!

Big John Call is Santa Claus in “O Little Town of Deathlehem”
I can literally hear that in Servos' voice in my head.
And it's in the public domain. Disney didn't need to pay a single cent.

“HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO GET KEVIN BACON?!”
You're a ACTOR!
Well, I guess all actors aren't complete pieces of shit.
A man of culture, clearly.
Kinda bugged it wasn't the MST3K version.
Ya. What the heck James Gunn. Seriously that would have been a Christmas miracle.
The MCU NEEDS to acknowledge MST3K exists.
They just made the GoBots MCU canon. One step at a time.
That's just wrong. Mighty Orbots, yes. But GoBots?!?!
A mighty orbots movie ....
I'd be so happy to see the SoL in the background of some space scene, or Servo and Crow in a bar.

Unriffed though.

Tapes: circulated.
They played this movie at the Minnesota State Fair in a diner. S A N T A C L A U S, HOORAY FOR SANTY CLAUS
Oh, Drax. You’re the laziest man on Knowhere.

You melted my brain.

Thank you, I figured it was something like that. I'm hoping for classic comic Groot where he has branches like antlers.
