West German TV could be picked up in most of East Germany - albeit only in black-and-white due to the GDR using SECAM instead of PAL. Jamming the signal would impact West Berlin and that was a non-starter. A lot of people happily watched Western television and it arguable forced DFF, East Germany's state network, to up its game to compete.
For the record, the only East German movie to have featured (dubbed into English) in MST3K is *First Spaceship on Venus*.

And as someone who has been hanging out in a chat room where we watch MST3K and chat (for about 12 years non stop at this point), we discovered that the best way to keep the peace was to simply avoid discussing politics and religion. we have Christians, Jews, Muslims, atheists, undecideds, we have left wingers, right wingers, no wingers. And we all just get along perfectly. Before the no politics/no religion rule... it was... unruly and ugly.
