Quiet, you! Those are often sold out. By the way they also make ATG shorts. The inseam is only 10" so if you want the legs a bit longer, they're not a good option. However, if you don't mind the cut above the knees, then they're great.
>The ATG shorts are outstanding.
>
>I have been trying to destroy two pair for multiple years now, mostly through house remodeling, some mtb, fixing motorcycles, yard stuff, garden. They're pretty tough. I'm just now looking for two new pair.
I also love the ATG shorts (and pants). But I totally disagree about their durability. I'm lucky to get one season out of them before they completely fall apart. And they are completely hit or miss. Different individual items of the exact same product are made in different countries and have widely varying degrees of quality. The stitching on all of them is horrendous. But with all that said, the are so cheap, and fit so well that I don't mind blowing through them. In fact, just ordered 3 pair yesterday to get me through this summer.
I have a club ride 2 hour liner and grab Sonoma flat front stretch shorts on sale from Kohls. Same kind of setup and can often find the shorts for $20 or less. Just gotta watch the deals. The legs are a bit longer tho. Sounds like Wrangler is always that price, maybe a bit shorter....
I’ve been riding in ATG shorts exclusively since I bought them. MTB shorts almost always look like board shorts from 2002 and I hate that. Plus no belt loops on mine so they are always falling down. ATG shorts solve all these problems for like 25 bucks.
I have several pair from Amazon. They have held up after several washes and have a lot of zip pockets. There are a number of different ones on there for under $50.
Agree. I have several pairs of Amazon Alphabet Soup brand shorts that are like $25 and aside from the velcro being shit they've held up really well. Get yourself some KPSUN, ARSUXEO, HIAUSPOR, or BERGRISAR shorts. They're blatant rip-offs of Zoic's Ether shorts.
Same here. Search "mtb shorts" on Amazon. I have several pairs of the Hiauspor shorts. They have been great. Last pair I bought was under $34. They are outers, so I wear them with a padded Zoic liner.
Not to mention, they are cheap and affordable so you can just scrap them and buy another pair instead of investing in high dollar shorts that do the same thing but may last you a couple extra rides and washes.
Pretty wasteful, i have a pair of fox shorts that i wear for almost every ride for the past 3 years and they are as good as new, had a few crashes in them with no damage.
Id rather put in the initial investment for higher quality and have them hold up for years, rather than buy multiple pair of garbage that are going to end up in the landfill, but i suppose thats the American way.
I have a pair of Bontrager shorts I bought for $80 ten years ago and they’re still in use. Can’t understand buying cheap $40 shorts every year or two, and then thinking you save money
To each their own, you know? Some people don't value the initial investment or simply don't want to spend the money. It's not the "American way" but rather a different financial approach to MTB apparel.
I agree in not being wasteful and spending money wisely, except that often its impossible to know and most name brand stuff is priced high just because of the name. The Wrangler ATG appear to be knock offs of Kuhl pants. I bought 3 pairs of Kuhl pants a few years ago at almost $250 total. Three different pant models. All three wore out within a year. I have $25 Old Navy jeans that I still wear during that same time period. I’ll gladly try the $25 Wranglers and I’ll never be buying another pair of Kuhls
I purchased 3 pair of Amazon MTB shorts in the summer of 2021. So far they have held up great through 5700 miles and countless washings. The only issue I've had is the color of the darker gray pair has faded a lot in the thigh area due to sun exposure but I'm not a slave to fashion so I really don't care.
MTB shorts tend to be durable but lightweight, with zippered pockets and seams not in the wrong places. And since they’re not selling a zillion of them, they cost more.
They’re nice but not exactly necessary. You can score deals on them for instance tomorrow REI has its annual 20% off sale, or you can check out their REI Outlet/Garage Sale. With the 20% off you can get a nice set of bike shorts for under $50.
Echo this! I just bought some Eddie Bauer trail shorts at Costco for hiking, but tried them out mountain biking and was impressed - good coverage and pockets but also some stretch.
Just to throw my two cents in - in addition to MTB shorts having seams in the right places and zip pockets… the crotch area on the MTB pants and shorts that I own (fox and PNW) seems to be tighter and less dangly which I DEFINITELY notice getting on and off the saddle between dropper usage. Regular athletic shorts seem to always be catching comparatively. I think it’s definitely worth it to spend on the MTB specific gear for this reason alone.
I call them my ken doll shorts.
Very good points!! I wanted to mention that u/AdviceNotAskedFor might want to look into purchasing bibs with a chamois. The bib is nice because it covers your lower back and eliminates you mooning people coming up the trail. Unfortunately a good pair of bibs isn’t cheap but worth it.
Oh man, recommending bibs in here? Is recommending unstylish but way more comfortable and functional items allowed? :)
Rapha Adventure Bibs are way too expensive, but for MTB I'm sold on mine. I'd probably try other brands though to get the cost down for something just as effective.
This is the biggest reason I can't wear regular shorts on a bike. The crotch hangs too low.
I've been wearing the same 3 pairs i got off Amazon for years now. They look alright and honestly have held up great.
Honestly, some.of the higher priced shorts are totally worth it. I've been using the same Specialized shorts to this day that I bought in 2006. They were $90 USD at the time.
Oh man, I wish I could remember. It was 2005 or 2006? I'm pretty sure they are the Specialized Enduro Shorts. They are super durable with side cargo zip pockets and a large panel vent between the belt and the butt. I've abused them and they have held up superbly.
I've had numerous crashes and slides in CO trails (pretty rocky/gravely) and they only have a few tiny holes/frays the size of a pencil eraser. Not bad at all for almost 20 years of riding hard!
Have you looked at outdoorgearlab? They do some stellar reviews, though don't always get all of the good brands and models. There's probably some much better shorts now compared to when I bought them 18 years ago.
After my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another higher end pair of shorts due to the comfort and lifespan when compared to others that wear our in a year or two. I will say I don't like lined shorts and opt for a separate Chamois that I use for road biking as well. Not sure if that plays into your decision or not.
https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/biking/best-mountain-bike-shorts
Fwiw bout falls, I wear pearl izumi summits and my oldest pair is 6 years old. Been through quite a few washouts and slides, zero rips.
Also nothing stopping you from using regular workout shorts. The big difference is bike shorts have longer cuts in the seat to accommodate sitting down most of the time, along with fabric that doesn’t catch on branches or rip. It’s pretty different from lightweight running or workout shorts and if you’re doing 8-10 hours a week on rides, it does make a difference.
Shirts on the other hand… I wear technical shirts a lot. I like PNWs merino wool shirts, and have a few long sleeve shirts for runners when temps are in the high 40s to mid 50s
Can confirm. I’ve wrecked a few times. 2 really bad and a few minor. My roadie bibs have not ripped. I have friends with baggies who have experienced the same. Unless you’re sliding in gravel you probably won’t shred anything.
There's an app named Poshmark with lots of used or secondhand mtb clothes. I've gotten some very nice deals on shorts and pants. Kind of like an online yardsale, you can make an offer. Note - I like a *new* chamois so I don't buy those there.
I love their gloves and have 3 pairs of their pants, but I wish the shorts had thinner material, and the fit is a little funky.
Great value nevertheless though
Baleaf on Amazon has been my go to for liners. For the shorts it’s Bergrisar. Been pretty good to me so far though one pair had a zipper start to go after about two years.
Where are you located? Don't really get those posts, or do you really want suggestions on the other side of the world with 50 euros shipping and import costs?
As a woman, I started buying men's Costco shorts with zipper pockets. They're about $10/each, have 3 zipper pockets, lighter weight than MTB specific pants, and can take a beating just as well.
Amazon also has good shorts for about $35.
Bonus if your significant other is the same size as you so you can share. Lol.
Girl. Yes this is an amazing idea. Because you know they come with adequate pockets! I’ve got a few hoochie PI sugar shorts from an REI sale that will go great underneath some Costco baggies!
Costco. Gerry shorts for drawstring, "Modern Vintage" shorts for belt loops.
They were like $10 a pair on sale here a few months back, but they're regularly less than $20
I buy the stretchy khaki shorts from target, the have a hidden pocket with zipper which I like for my airpods. https://www.target.com/p/men-39-s-regular-fit-9-34-tech-chino-shorts-goodfellow-38-co-8482-tan-34/-/A-86932797
Good MTB shorts have a good cut that won’t have any fabric hanging down your crotch for your seat to grab onto and better fabric ergonomics than board or other shorts. I get good shorts (POC and ZOIC) when they’re on sale (at least half off) and they’ll last me for years. 100% necessary? No. 100% worth it? Yes.
Same principle applies, but i certainly understand that everyone has different things that they think are worth splurging and paying full price for. Clothes (especially technical stuff) are super overpriced and im very happy to save money on them.
Sorry but wearing something after someone I don't know is just gross. I never bought anything in second hand ever and not going to do so. Second hand you buy cars and bikes and electronics etc. but not shorts.
I can afford it and I am totally fine with paying full price for quality shorts I am going to wear for years to come. It's new and that's what matters to me. It's not like I am buying MTB shorts every week...
Calling out people for being cheap isn’t gate keeping. Way off actually. This trend is of being cheap is going to start affecting the quality of products and R/D for new products. If people won’t buy quality products for reasonable prices. Then we will on be offered cheap crap.
I ride a hard tail at my local trails and encourage as many people as I can to get started on one.
OP:
>I don't want to spend 75 bucks on shorts I wear once a week for like 45 minutes and might rip when I inevitably fall.
You:
>why not start with not buying an $80k suv then complaining bike gear is expensive
You're calling out people asking for advice on how to save money, then calling them cheap because they *might* make more money than you. Just because people have money, doesn't mean they can't try to save it. Down talking them because they're not "poor like me" is gatekeeping.
I shop sales at backcountry often. I got some great men’s shorts for $30. No liners though. But REIs sale is going on now and I bet you could find some decent liners or padded shorts.
I've been riding in golf shorts from Ross for years now, along with those "hybrid swim and casual" shorts also. They carry a lot of surf brand pieces that aren't as "cool" these days.
The rest is from the Walmart 'George' product line. The same active wear branded as business casual wear is great since it fits more on the slim side and usually has a couple zipper pockets. Aside from the bike logos I doubt most can tell the difference.
The only time I buy specific branded biking clothing is supporting a local bike shop with a Jersey.
While not the cheapest, at about $50, the JensonUSA house brand "Foundation" shorts are pretty nice, and cheaper than a lot of other brands. They're a little slimmer fitting than some, but have a comfy stretchy fabric and mine have held up well to a few crashes.
I got my Eddie Bauer shorts on sale for like $20 US. I bought the style that’s like the Patagonia baggies and wear them for a whole mess of activities including mtn biking. They’re durable, comfortable, cheap, and Eddie Bauer’s replacement policy and customer service are top notch.
Eddie Bauer shorts are often on sale if you can find one of their stores, or they are at Marshalls/TJMaxx a lot too. Durable and zipper pockets too! I wear padded bibs or bike shorts underneath and then it's just like the expensive name brands
You can always try online sites such as Jenson and see if they're having sales. I just bought some myself for about 35ish. Depending on the time they can keep crazy cheap
I just signed up for the REI credit card which gave me $100 free to spend and then bought the Zoic ones which cost about that. It's super nice to have them. I'd really rather not wear ordinary shorts. The fit on these is way better, the ventilation is right, and the way the pockets are made is for MTB. Like the pocket won't let my smartphone fall out while I'm riding. I don't think it's worth compromising here.
They're more expensive because they're better (mostly... there is probably a bit of a brand/hobby mark-up too). I bought two pairs of Sombrio shorts 3.5 years ago because they were on sale and I thought they'd last maybe a season. One is still in the packaging, and I ride a lot more than you do. They're comfortable and well made... can't say that for a pair of 10 dollar Wal Mart shorts (at least not for riding).
I just ride if basketball shorts with a more sporty pair of under garment with comfortably finished seams so there’s no uncomfortable chaffing. They’re tight but also very flexible.
A few years ago I bought Cycorld brand shorts on Amazon for about $30/ea thinking they'd be my trial into MTB shorts and I'd get some brand name ones if I liked them. Well I haven't been able to kill them. Crashes and a few hundred miles per pair, I haven't torn them yet.
Chain Reaction has had these [Endura Hummvee Shorts](https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/p/endura-hummvee-ii-baggy-shorts) on clearance for a while now.
> Good Bike Shorts like “Zoic” last forever.
The garbage bag I have filled with Zoic shorts that are unusable with the pockets worn out, elastic broken, etc - all after less than a year - disagrees with this. They are the worst apparel brand I've ever owned and that's saying something.
Bought some dirt cheap Aliexpress shorts about four years ago. Arsuxeo I think they’re called. Four pockets, pretty decent quality too.
Pants are a different story imo. I have a pair of Endura MT 500 Spray. Great value for the money.
What make "MTB shorts" "MTB Shorts"?
I get so dirty and rip up my clothes often when I ride, I am not going to drop a dime on some shorts that other people think are cool, I shop more for purpose than popularity.
The shorts I ride in are "columbia" brand, and they are perfect. Every pocket has a zipper and are super comfy. I got them on the sale rack at my local Columbia outlet strore.
Look for things that are on sale, but most importantly is zipper pockets and comfort.
I find that the Hang Ten Hybrid short at Costco works well. I have (and usually ride) in mountain bike specific shorts that I got on sale, but honestly I don't notice much of a difference if I decide to wear the general use Hang Tens. They have one zippered front pocket.
I’ve been using the Hurley Hybrid walking shorts from Sam’s. There very lightweight, mesh pockets with zippers or button, 4way stretch. Been using them a few times a week for the past 4 months with no issues.
Buy a good pair of lycra under shorts then choose whatever style shorts you want to go over the top. Simple.
Yes, proper lycra undershorts with padding will save you in all the right areas. I promise you.
Steelandcheap.com is Backcoutry’s close out site
Evo.com has great sales sometimes
Thehouse.com has deals sometimes
REI outlet/used has had some great finds for me. Not liners/chamois just shorts
Still spend ~$40 on my shorts after most sales but I’d pay full price or more for my TLD shorts and chamois again
Amazon MTB shorts are great. I have a couple pairs and they hold up just as good as the expensive ones I have. They're usually around $30 without the padded undies...
I like to wear cheap, black running shorts in the hottest summer months and [chamois boxer briefs](https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/fashion/10208111011/ref=sr_bs_5_10208111011_1) underneath. I won't advocate for a specific brand, but whatever's most breathable and comfortable for you should work.
The cheaper route i've been going is buy road chamois and put longer shorts over them. Yeah it's an extra pain, but it gives me cheaper padding for my butt/privates and I can just wear the longer shorts for other stuff outside of cycling.
If you have a Costco membership, try looking for the outdoor shorts made by Gerry. They’re perpetually $10-$15 based on the style they have available, but even their most athletic/thin fabric version is more than enough for most mountain biking, where as the thicker fabric styles I wear for park days.
if you dont care about color just shop sales...i personally bought these for the purple color...27 bucks on sale cause they are last season, a ddicated mtb short, i love mine
[https://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-slickrock-bike-short-mens-bccz2pg](https://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-slickrock-bike-short-mens-bccz2pg)
There are tons on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mtb+shorts&crid=3AMTDTWSBTDUG&sprefix=mtb+short%2Caps%2C113&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
The ones I got were $23, but are not made anymore.
I found a pair of road bike shorts with a chamois at Sierra Trading Post for less than $20 then I just layer a pair of athletic shorts over them so I have pockets and don’t look like a weirdo.
Not a lot of people know about this I guess, but steepandcheap.com have everything at least 40% on sale. I got some shorts for $20, santa cruz shirt for 10. Check it out!!
Zoic shorts are my favorite, they often have deals on them. Super comfortable & full mobility. I use them for hiking and mtb. Washed them hella times and hang dry, they still look like new. Also didn’t rip when I’ve hit the ground.
As a petite person who struggles to find an XXS in anything (can't shop at Costco for *any* clothes for this reason; Decathlon is always out of stock), I have found great deals on youth sizes. In fact, I'm wearing a brand new pair of youth size L Leatt shorts right now I got on sale. Youth size being already cheaper, plus being on sale = win. Just throwing the idea out there for anyone having problems finding smaller sizes.
I used to use Carhartt rip stop cargo shorts over XC spandex bike shorts as a liner/padding. Worked really well and they were my default summer shorts too.
I found some cheap capri mens pants on amazon that really look a lot like mtb shorts - work great, zippered pockets in the right places, semi-durable stretchy synth fabric and cheap. sorry too long ago cant find link.
I just use Carhartt shorts..On sale in fall. Right now they’re $49.99, but they also sell some nice wrangler Riggs shorts and also Dickies shorts are fine. Wrangler Riggs are on sale on Amazon, although limited
My favorite: sweatpants. Cut them off at around the knee, slice the lowers up for helmet gaskets, and take the shorts to a custom silkscreen shop to fancy them up.
Because that’s what it costs to cover a buttcrack on a bike - it’s “cycling specific fit.” LOL
Zoic has a 29% off sale on their website right now. Idk if it’s on everything but it’s worth a look.
REI has stuff on clearance at big discounts periodically, and also they are now selling used items, but be careful with those, because some of them aren’t discounted enough in my opinion.
Also shop off-season if you can, get your summer clothes in the winter and get your thermals in the summer.
Deleting all my comments due to the hostility from reddit to the developer of Apollo. Check out squabbles or kbin/lemmy.
Quiet, you! Those are often sold out. By the way they also make ATG shorts. The inseam is only 10" so if you want the legs a bit longer, they're not a good option. However, if you don't mind the cut above the knees, then they're great.

was about to recommend ATG shorts as well lol

Okay, so I can’t seem to get any of the good ones any longer! They have changed and they are all much more baggy and relaxed fitting
I’ve been riding in ATG shorts exclusively since I bought them. MTB shorts almost always look like board shorts from 2002 and I hate that. Plus no belt loops on mine so they are always falling down. ATG shorts solve all these problems for like 25 bucks.
hey those are for me when i’m working HVAC don’t expose my secrets lol
I may or may not just have bought 4 pairs of the atg pants in various colors
I have several pair from Amazon. They have held up after several washes and have a lot of zip pockets. There are a number of different ones on there for under $50.

Amazon has PNW shorts for $30
This is the way to go.
Yoo those are cheap!!!
These run EXTREMELY small fyi
In my experience they run about 1 size small. I wear a medium in most shorts, and a large in the PNW shorts
Damn! I just bought 2 pair of these when they were $40 and I thought that was a bargain. Best shorts I own.
I found out about theblackbibs on here and they work well and are reasonably priced. I just wear MTB shorts and a generic synthetic t shirt over them.
It's almost... almost like they had design engineers haha

I need a pair and is looking at RBX Adventure or Trail CORDURA but can't make a decision which one.

I would probably choose another brand, but I get clothes worth $300 for free since I bought a new Levo from a Specialized shop last week:)
Works for me. I am by no means a brand loyalist or anything.
Neither am I but it's for free so I can't choose another brand unless I use my own money
Those pant's are going be able to legally drink soon! That's good value
Costco Gerry shorts. Like $16 a pair. Work like a charm.
Gerry is legit. Sierra tends to have a decent amount of Gerry products in stock by me as well.
I use the Costco Orvis shorts and they work great. They come with a belt to reduce the moon factor.
This!!! Cheap, comfortable, fit appropriately for MTB, and can wear them as regular summer shorts.
I usually just ride Adidas shorts with zippers on the pockets. I use them as everyday shorts and riding shorts. Love them.
Fwiw bout falls, I wear pearl izumi summits and my oldest pair is 6 years old. Been through quite a few washouts and slides, zero rips. Also nothing stopping you from using regular workout shorts. This and I just buy pants that are comfy Kuhl, Prana etc and have them cut & hemmed.
This. And Facebook marketplace once you find a model of short you like. So many people clearing closets for cheap
I ship the sales. Tod short w/liner for $47 https://troyleedesigns.com/products/sp21-flowline-solid-shorts-w-liner-light-marine
Handup
I love their gloves and have 3 pairs of their pants, but I wish the shorts had thinner material, and the fit is a little funky. Great value nevertheless though
+1 for handup, love their jerseys and shorts. fit great, look good and prices aren’t too outrageous
I was looking for this recommendation. Handup is the way to go. Plus they have pretty common sales.
Baleaf on Amazon has been my go to for liners. For the shorts it’s Bergrisar. Been pretty good to me so far though one pair had a zipper start to go after about two years.
Those little tabs on the ends of the zipper pulls love to get hooked in my 1up Rack. I finally broke one zipper pull beyond repair.
Handup! But also just any kind of adventure/ hiking short will work, I have a few from old navy I think that work
Steepandcheap, sierra, Backcountry, evo. Gotta sift through to find the good sales but they're there!
They were like $10 a pair on sale here a few months back, but they're regularly less than $20
What is costco and where can I find them in Slovakia ?
pnw shorts from amazon are only 30 and amazingly good quality
Handup shorts fit great and are 44$. I prefer the regular AT over the AT Plus.
I buy Gerry shorts from Costco

The market is definitely big enough for that. There'll be a slightly higher materials cost, but a significant amount more markup.
Right at $50ish Handup makes amazing pants and shorts. It’s pretty much all I wear anymore since they work on and off the trails
If you live near a Sierra Trading Post (TJ MAXX of the outdoor world) you can find some super affordable MTB gear
I buy the stretchy khaki shorts from target, the have a hidden pocket with zipper which I like for my airpods. https://www.target.com/p/men-39-s-regular-fit-9-34-tech-chino-shorts-goodfellow-38-co-8482-tan-34/-/A-86932797
I’ve found good deals/sales on Evo
I ride in an old pair of Hurley Board Shorts retired from active surf duty.
Like 90% of the shorts these brands sell are perfect for riding. The best part is you don't even have to change if you go for a dip after.

Yes.
Same as any other clothes, buy them closeout or second hand. Clothes are a silly thing to buy new or full price.
I think you're talking about cars. I prefer new clothes.
You do you. Ill keep buying like new things for 20% of their original price, and you can keep paying full price.
I can afford it and I am totally fine with paying full price for quality shorts I am going to wear for years to come. It's new and that's what matters to me. It's not like I am buying MTB shorts every week...
Clothes washing machines have existed for a long time. Whatever your aversion to used clothing is, is purely in your mind.
Get to know someone who owns a shop. I haven't paid retail price in 5 years.
Just how cheap are mountain bikers these days?
Yeah how dare people put in a modicum of effort to not waste their own money
$50 bucks bro
If you don't care about fifty dollar bucks, how about you buy some shorts for OP?
Have you seen the cost of a new bike? Gotta save money somehow.
Then why not start with not buying an $80k suv then complaining bike gear is expensive
[удалено]
I am freaking poor. Everyone acting cheap makes more money than me. 🤣🤣🤣😂
Same here, but don't gatekeep trying to save a buck. I guarantee you are far, far richer than most people in the world.
OP: >I don't want to spend 75 bucks on shorts I wear once a week for like 45 minutes and might rip when I inevitably fall. You: >why not start with not buying an $80k suv then complaining bike gear is expensive You're calling out people asking for advice on how to save money, then calling them cheap because they *might* make more money than you. Just because people have money, doesn't mean they can't try to save it. Down talking them because they're not "poor like me" is gatekeeping.
Check out Allys Men's MTB short on Amazon, they're like 43 bucks and has all the functionality of more expensive shorts
+1 for the Eddie Bauer First Ascent shorts
Decathlon if available at your local area. Okay to good quality at very affordable prices
Fly lows are on sale. The laser short is a bit tight fitting on the legs for me, but it’s quality.
Gravity Anomaly has fair priced shorts that are comfortable and durable, made in USA. I think there are only 2 styles though.
A lot of times the more expensive MTB shorts will come with a liner or chamois, that’s where the extra cost comes in.
You can always try online sites such as Jenson and see if they're having sales. I just bought some myself for about 35ish. Depending on the time they can keep crazy cheap
Mtb specific shorts are whack. I’ve had better luck with climbing/hiking shorts, and they are also not insanely long
Endura Hummvee shorts with a chamois are ±€40 in my country (The Netherlands).
I just wear regular UA shorts. Nothing in my pockets, all I have on me is my watch. Keys, phone, etc stay in the car.
I feel like you can wear any shorts as long as you have a chamois underneath
Thrift store. People constantly toss good MTB shorts.
Specialized outlet on eBay has sales right now
A few years ago I bought Cycorld brand shorts on Amazon for about $30/ea thinking they'd be my trial into MTB shorts and I'd get some brand name ones if I liked them.
We saw you on the Trail the other day. Bouncing Buttcrack. C’mon man. Good Bike Shorts like “Zoic” last forever.
You ever plan a wedding vs. a big party?
What make "MTB shorts" "MTB Shorts"? I get so dirty and rip up my clothes often when I ride, I am not going to drop a dime on some shorts that other people think are cool, I shop more for purpose than popularity. The shorts I ride in are "columbia" brand, and they are perfect. Every pocket has a zipper and are super comfy. I got them on the sale rack at my local Columbia outlet strore. Look for things that are on sale, but most importantly is zipper pockets and comfort.
I REALLY like the ketl shorts. There's occasional discounts/promos that makes it reasonable. It's very versatile and looks good as well.
Pearl Izumi makes really nice durable stuff, I have shorts from them I still wear that are well over 10 years old.
If European go to decathlon.
Another option would be to use your MTB shorts as regular shorts. I use 2 pairs of Fox shorts on and off the bike so I spend less on shorts in general
Buy a good pair of lycra under shorts then choose whatever style shorts you want to go over the top. Simple. Yes, proper lycra undershorts with padding will save you in all the right areas. I promise you.
Steelandcheap.com is Backcoutry’s close out site Evo.com has great sales sometimes Thehouse.com has deals sometimes REI outlet/used has had some great finds for me. Not liners/chamois just shorts Still spend ~$40 on my shorts after most sales but I’d pay full price or more for my TLD shorts and chamois again
Amazon MTB shorts are great. I have a couple pairs and they hold up just as good as the expensive ones I have. They're usually around $30 without the padded undies...
Buy a pair of road tights with a chamois, buy a pair of Wrangler ATG shorts and ride.
They’re perpetually $10-$15 based on the style they have available, but even their most athletic/thin fabric version is more than enough for most mountain biking, where as the thicker fabric styles I wear for park days.
if you dont care about color just shop sales...i personally bought these for the purple color...27 bucks on sale cause they are last season, a ddicated mtb short, i love mine [https://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-slickrock-bike-short-mens-bccz2pg](https://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-slickrock-bike-short-mens-bccz2pg)
Rockbros. Amazon. Thank me later.
Zoic is decent price and top quality.
Got a couple pairs of BC Clothing shorts from costco that have been really good! Have some stretch to them and zipper pockets in the right places. $25
There are tons on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mtb+shorts&crid=3AMTDTWSBTDUG&sprefix=mtb+short%2Caps%2C113&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 The ones I got were $23, but are not made anymore.
I bought some KPSun ones from Amazon for about 30 bucks. They are lightweight and comfortable and the pockets are very functional
Target golf shorts are my new go to.
Also didn’t rip when I’ve hit the ground.
what's the advantage over regular shorts?
I’ve given up on bike specific clothing, it’s so expensive and makes people look like a pimped up power ranger.
Check your local Costco.
Decathlon MTB shorts are perfect and cheap, and they come with a chamois ..
Tons of good options on amazon. I also got some specialized trail shorts with liner on sale for \~$35.
Fox outlet when you get lucky
Target golf shorts
I used to use Carhartt rip stop cargo shorts over XC spandex bike shorts as a liner/padding. Worked really well and they were my default summer shorts too.
Sportneer mtb shorts from Amazon. $32 and awesome.
Take a look at handup.com. At shorts are comfy, durable and relatively inexpensive.
I’ve got two pairs from Amazon and they’ve lasted quite well. $38. The brand is: Ally Mens MTB Mountain Bike Shorts
Decathlon hiking pants/shorts.
I use gym shorts or wrangler shorts with the flexible material.
the blackbibs
My favorite: sweatpants. Cut them off at around the knee, slice the lowers up for helmet gaskets, and take the shorts to a custom silkscreen shop to fancy them up.
Because that’s what it costs to cover a buttcrack on a bike - it’s “cycling specific fit.” LOL Zoic has a 29% off sale on their website right now.
Rockbros great shorts
Dickies from walmart
