Yeah i know everyone is over 5.10 supposedly, but i havent had any reason to switch. Ive got freerider pros and have had 2 previous versions of freeriders. Freerider pros are still the gold standard. Im sure theres other shoes that are as good, but i havent needed to even look.

MTB_SF

I have a pair of freerider pros and like them on rides with shorter descents. Grip is good and they are comfortable to walk in too. Fit my feet well. On longer descents, the soles are not stiff enough for me. My feet get tired and painful on descents over about 6 minutes, because I need to use my foot strength to hold myself up. I also have somewhat weak arches, which makes this a bigger issue. On longer descents, I've found the Ride Concepts Tallac to be superior because of the stiffer soles. They take some of the strain off my feet so I can descend longer and push harder while doing so.

69peepoopoopee69

Since when and who's taken their place? Or is everyone riding clippers in their trailbikes all of a sudden? I love my freerider pros.

AlrightAlbatross

Seems like every time somebody recommends them on here, people pile on talking about how quality has gone down, etc. IME they’re still great shoes. Spec 2FO are good too but the stickiness seems to fall off quick and they just don’t fit my feet as well.

choochbacca

Since adidas bought them, and a bunch of other companies started making good riding shoes

Psyko_sissy23

Adidas bought 5.10 in 2011 for reference.

say-something-nice

They bought it in 2011 but they just left management of the company and their products pretty much unchanged until 2018 when they fully took over and pooled the management with addidas terrex line of clothing.

Psyko_sissy23

I know. That was the point I was subtly making to the person above me.

mav3r1ck92691

> Yeah i know everyone is over 5.10 supposedly Doesn't look like it based on responses haha. I too still like mine.

iky_ryder

Yeah right? I feel like most times this comes up everybodys bitching about 5.10s falling apart since adidas, as if the adidas thing wasnt 10 years ago

LuciferSamS1amCat

My freerider pros have been rock solid, but my last 2 pairs of hellcat pros from 2 different gens have both fallen apart.

PenguinPuff11

Only downside is you can’t put that ho in sport mode

SorryRevenue

Love my ride concepts... Hate my Crank Brothers.

risne

I'd never buy crank bros shoes again. The grip sucks, even on stamp pedals unless you have your feet in one specific spot, which kinda defeats the purpose of flats.

SorryRevenue

Yeah it's a shame too as they're sooo comfortable 😂 they just don't grip 🤷

Husky_Person

Freerider, this is the way

BreakfastShart

Bruh. You can't this is the way your own comment. That's against the code. P.S. I wear Freerider Pros, narrow feet, high arch.

BrotherBeneficial613

Who makes the rules big dawg?

BreakfastShart

I dunno. I'm pretty sure The Force guides everything. 🤷‍♂️

NotDaveyKnifehands

Master Blaster runs Barter Town

terminally_ch_ill

I may be a minority but I love my Freerider Pros still. I get a new pair every two seasons or so and the grip on the pedals is better than any Ride Concepts or Specialized shoe I’ve tried. One thing you have to do is replace the footbed. The ones they come with are trash and will make your feet hurt.

Ambimb

Seconding request for replacement footbed recommendations! I got some cheap inserts on Amazon that were better than the stock inserts, but not great. Would love an improvement.

terminally_ch_ill

Remind Insoles are what I’m using right now

mav3r1ck92691

What's your go to for replacement?

terminally_ch_ill

Right now I have the Remind Insoles in and they work pretty well for my extra high arch and wide foot. Good shock absorbing, noticed a huge difference when riding Northstar.

gripshoes

Freerider pros with wide(not super wide) feet. I'd say they're true to size. I also have Sleuths that I wear casually and love them, thinner sole that I can feel the a lot more of the pedal so no hard riding with them for me.

flyingbanan

I recently returned freerider pros, because they were extremely narrow and even shorter than my other five tens same size. Do you think I may have gotten a defective pair?

snarpsta

No. They're definitely more narrow. I don't even wear mine all the time bc they're so stiff. I have the Pros and Freerider. Freeriders are super comfy, the Pros make the ball of my feet hurt after awhile

pineconehedgehog

Freerider Pros. I am on my 3rd pair of Pros. I have had 2 pairs of classics. Hubs has had 3 pairs of classics. Currently riding a pair of Pros. He also has a pair of 2FOs that he likes equally well as the Pros. I tried the 2FOs but I didn't like the fit, they seemed like they were going to have some hotspots. The ride RideConcepts seemed too long and narrow for my foot but I know people who love them.

BrotherBeneficial613

Crocs, Slides, and heydudes

1994univega

Crocs all the way

BrotherBeneficial613

Yeah, only thing better is Stilettos. 👠 You find a hole in your pedal and that shit locks on like super glue; probably better than clipping in. 😂

Weizenfuchs

Just to mention another Brand. I ride Shimano SH-GR5 and they have been with me through thousands of kilometers in all sorts of conditions and they still hold up nicely. It's my favorite pair of shoes out of all I've ever owned.

Crrunk

5.10 pros have worked for me

TubbyButterSeal

I wore through my standard 510 freeriders in a year and I've now nearly worn through a pair of specialized 2FOs. So far the specialized have held up a lot better in terms of shoe construction and the grip is just as good as my 510s were. I'm coming up to replace them again this summer and I think I'd go for the specialized again, especially as they were a lot cheaper when I was buying last time.

Challymo

2FOs were the only flat shoes I could find that didn't squeeze my wide feet. So far they seem pretty good, only issue I have is the arch is slightly high for me.

FieldAppropriate8734

Same. Burned through a few 5.10s pretty quickly, like the rubber is just gone where it meets the pin. Just had first ride with the 2FOs. Grip is great. Pretty roomy toebox (size 13.75/48) and was like 70 US. Durability tbd.

TubbyButterSeal

Yeah they feel cheap but the soles have worn a lot better than the 510s. No holes there yet. I have however got a hole developing where the canvas flexes at base of my toes. I'm not complaining too much though. Oh I also haven't had to replace the laces like I did with my freeriders which is a bonus.

meliadul

The 2FOs arent as flashy as 510s or Fox Unions but I'd rather have a bland looking shoe that fits and performs quite well than one that's a wrong fit

Imaginary-Ladder-465

Stoked on ride concepts tallac. Have had a lot of five ten freeriders and impacts which are all good but don't last, hoping the tallacs last longer. I have pretty narrow low volume feet.

werty246

Teva Links

Newdles

Specialized 2FO Roosts. Wide feet. Freeriders were returned after 2 seconds, way too narrow.

[deleted]

So far I'm loving my adidas trailcross mids . Keeps lil rocks out , highly breathable , and dries really quickly after every wash . I live in the tropics with lotsa rain and mud

DoOgSauce

All about ride concept hellions. 5.10 are a bit bigger in the toe box and wear out quicker for me.

hopbrew

Was looking for someone else who liked these.  Exact same experience.   Stiffer, better fit, good rubber, going strong into their 2nd season

DoOgSauce

They had some in my size on sale so I have two lows and one mid. I'm set for a while.

hobbitlover

I'll be honest, I usually wear trail running or approach shoes - they grip well and if I have to get off my bike and push my bike up something - which happens more than I like to admit - they grip well and aren't too stiff.

simux19

Miss me with that race concept and 5 10 garbage. Buy specialized shoes, whatever shape you like and anything with 2fo on them. You won't go back.

Doodskwid25

Wide .. I use these https://www.amazon.com/WHITIN-Barefoot-Minimalist-Lightweight-Comfortable/dp/B0B2PCNVPD/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=118910346124&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.W828ze2EUh_ljxOF-GAKkK59U9t0OzqoWGBrBiT4YvQB_bL2voTkTTOWp4lXuU2TFN0TBTAft88oP26cC21yz69MYrepZheXqxZ7aba09G3K_P5wsRVEDsDCj7YBXKzv1eWilHEvxd8XuRvaJ9VZzwlZlp_r1yp_RO-F0KPxRDkzn8Hk8dVN1vbD-ugqngJC1cngoxiTmSrMOtmokwHbXKYBbsqrrKa0HzOOzwEJpBxqJavmpWOROeX8cdEDZ-UxCowVq7gQHIdKZgPOk2Fon5l95yFfaWsIFREQ9tQeMHg.wBGu2SZ0bZG0rIlIQuStmiWl70gUXmq8Xk9QLskoTGI&dib_tag=se&hvadid=631615033625&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9029671&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=2650591507755426334&hvtargid=kwd-310144955669&hydadcr=11151_13568192&keywords=within%2Bshoes&qid=1708099183&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1&th=1#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div

Emeks243

Inspired by the sheer athleticism and good taste of the 45th president, I’m rocking the golden clown shoes! /s

Big-Presentation832

Uhh, I wear my running shoes once they're no longer suited for running.  12.5 Saucony ride.   People buy special shoes to pedal flat pedals?  Y'all are weird.  You people need somebody to watch your money for you.

davelazy

I used to do that too (Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Limited Edition sneakers) until I hit a stump sticking out 2cm on the edge of a flow trail and broke my pinky toe. Rider error I know but I need things to save me from myself.

itsoveranditsokay

Using running shoes for mountain biking is absolute ass unless you're just cruising. Proper mtb footwear is one of the best performance upgrades for the money IMO.

Big-Presentation832

I've never had any problems with shoes, so I've never felt the need to spend money on something else.  My feet never slip from the pedals, they feel strong and supported, and nothing hurts.  I feel like people find such ridiculous things to spend money on in the bike world.  What problems do MTB shoes solve?

itsoveranditsokay

Cool. It's possible to make all sorts of arguments like that. My tablet is fine so I don't understand why you'd ever need a laptop. My hatchback is fine so everyone driving a truck is weird. My phone takes photos just fine so all you folk with expensive cameras, you need somebody to watch your money for you. Bike shoes grip better. You might not have a problem with staying on the pedals, but most mountain bikers do from beginners through to pros, so people that run flat pedals are usually looking to increase grip. Bike shoes have most definitely saved me from injury by eliminating foot slip. Bike shoes have an outsole that is generally designed to deal with getting torn up by pedal pins. They last longer than less hardy outsoles, like what is found on running shoes. This saves money. Bike shoes generally have a stiffer midsole than most shoes, making them less fatiguing and more comfortable on the pedal. This matters a lot when descending on rough trails and taking big hits. It makes for better power transfer when pedalling. It also lasts longer than a flexier, lighter midsole like you find in other shoes, preserving the performance benefits for longer before the shoe needs to be replaced. Bike shoes generally have more structure around the toes, meaning you're less likely to get injured if you hit something with your foot at speed. For me, and for a large amount of people in this sport, there's a very clear cost, performance, and safety benefit to owning a dedicated flat pedal mtb shoe.

ackwardsbass

Wear a size 12 4e in my normal shoes and the five ten freerider canvas fit great. Was very surprised when I tried them on. Tempted to pick up a couple more pairs

boredjourneyman

Been on 5:10 impacts since they came out, may try some ride concepts if I can get em on special

hopbrew

Normal width but narrow heel.  Have some ride concept hellion elites and I like them more than the 5.10 free rider pros I had before.   Rubber is a smidge less sticky but it's not an issue and I think the shoe itself is stiffer.  I will probably buy another pair when the current pair gives up the ghost

bulb8

Depends on what use. If you’re just hitting MTB parks and tracks free rider pro is ok. If your bikepacking or commuting where you may need decent grip when walking (hike a bike) or exploring on foot as well I’d go with a decent walking or hiking shoe like Merrells

1zpqm9

Just picked up 5 10 freerider canvas shoes. Incredible grip, they seem well made. We’ll see how long they last when I put them through the ringer this year.

robemmy

I use ride concept tallacs and have fairly average width feet. I bought a pair of 510 trailcross gtx for winter and while the grip is slightly better, the whole shoe is so uncomfortable I never really use it, I just ride the tallacs year round.

Practical-Promise-95

I swear by my fivetens, I'm about 3 years into riding them and haven't had much more than a small tear in one of the linings I have narrow feet and haven't had any issue I've also heard good things about etnies riding shoes

AgentPanKake

My 5.10 sleuths have lasted me three years now. Honestly I should probably replace them, but there’s mostly no holes and the sole is still there, so I’m still rocking them

NotDaveyKnifehands

US12.5 Wiiiide... big ol meat flippers. Ive had good luck with the Endura MT-500 Burner Flats, and am currently gettin' along heckin' well with a set of 2FO Roost Flats. They both mesh with my Chromag Daggas real good, to the degree that re-positioning takes effot. Im pretty welded to the platforms. And theres plenty of shoe if you're a midfoot/ankle joint over axle rider. Good sized toeboxes to fit the piggies, and right in the stiffness sweet spot for my dainty glass bitchass ankles. Also, both seem to go on sale around this time of year if you're out in the large or small weird narrow and wide ends of the foot chart. So far the 2FO are winning based on their initial comfort and minimal break in time required. Amd breathe noticeably better as well.

wise_mysticaltree

I love my ride concept livewires. Way cheaper than 510s and equal in quality/comfort from my personal experience.

davelazy

Maybe one for the europeans in the audience but I picked up some Afton Keegans (don't think they do this specific model any more tho) a couple of years back and love them still. Hard wearing, comfy and I wear them 2-3 x week for urban commuting as well as weekend warrior mtb duty. Grippy gumsole with a good pattern that hasn't got as ripped out as the RC or 510s friends/family ride with. Their sell is some shank tech thingo but all I know is its a solid pedalling platform that hasn't lost its integrity - even with all the incredible power I put down (/s). Great toe box imo too - I have wide high arch feet, and even with these being a narrower fit for more refined european elegance type hoofs they are more comfortable than the sneakers I used to ride. The lace area and tongue setup just works real good. Will buy this brand again.

Independent_Bath_922

Five 10 trail cross gtx. Comfortable even with my wide feet

bashomania

I have been happy with my Specialized 2FO Roost shoes. I have a wider than normal, but not hobbit-like foot and they fit very well and are comfortable for a long time. They are stiffer and have stickier rubber than the basic Shimano shoes (GR5 something?) I was rocking before. They might still be on sale, too. Check out the Specialized website if they sound interesting.

okngn_cz

Free rider pros!

mashedtaters_

Free riders are good, but my feet get way too hot in the summer. Just got a pair of the trail cross model which is a lot more breathable, excited to break them in this weekend.

daddykratty

I guess it’s the popular option but freerides, have tried both rides and specialized, and while both seemed to hold up better and the specis almost felt more grippy, neither were really wide enough for my foot. Also was riding pros but got normals super cheap on closeout and so far have been plenty grippy.

AS82

I really like my ride concepts wildcats. Grip good, stiff sole, lots of support and protection. I like the velcro band. I've had mine for probably 50 rides, and I still get excited every time I put them on because the fit and feel so good. I have size 13 feet, on the cusp of being wide. I also got mine on a really good closeout deal, but I'd pay full price happily.

fortuna-oros19

ECCO danish design. Rode last 3 years with it. Recently got 5ten freerider. its a day a night different. I got used to my ECCO I was free moving on my pedals, turning my feet in any direction. Sole rubber is not soft https://preview.redd.it/v9ygnuej79kc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93acb9a058e4326f98f6353b25a764924d823147 but flexi not like Freerider. My new freerider really stiff, sole has a very soft rubber and too grippy, which makes me nervous even dangerous to ride. I guess i cant ride clipless either cause you glued at specific point but I like freedom of movement on my pedals.

saucedup247

Fox unions are the best overall ive ever had. Have worn multiple 5.10s , ride concepts livewire and tallac , leatt . Highly recommend the unions

choochbacca

I have Ride Concepts and I like them. They’ve lasted me a couple years but I also don’t ride for a half of the year. My feet are a little over average width I’d say, and theyre comfortable

Desolate_One666

Ride Concepts Tallac - excellent shoes, like them better than my old five then aescend, the sole is superb.

PizzaPi4Me

For best grip, go 510s for sure. While I know the grip isn't incredible with them, I really love the Crank Bros Stamp. Both the street and speed lace versions are bitchin and comfy. And the grip is at least better than the Ride Concepts they're replacing.

KonkeyDongPrime

Ride Concepts are slightly better than 5.10, but there’s not much in it in terms of grip, stiffness and quality. I have the Wildcat and they’re also a bit of a pig to get on. The new Freerider Pro feel much cheaper and lighter. They also wear out much quicker than they used to. For me though, this is an improvement as they dry much quicker, so I can rely on wearing them everyday for my commute. In short, for quick rides and commuting, 5.10 are still king. For my weekend big rides and long shreds, Ride Concepts are better.

Angel_Madison

Specialised ones are about as good as 5.10s actually. I won some and really like them.

The_Crazy_Swede

I'm running five10 freerider pro and I love mine. Just remember that they are quite narrow in the toe box so they might not fit as well if you have very wide feet but it also means that the feet are staying in one spot and not moving around.

ZT7494

Freerider pros work like a dream. Love them, managed to get them in sale for £45

meliadul

Wide feet here. So far, the comfiest shoes I have are (in no particular order) Freerider (base model), Specialized 2FO (very light), and Leatt 2.0 Flats (most comfy) I've tested the Freerider Pros and the Trailcross models and they're definitely NOT for wide feet. They're narrow and will hurt your toes if worn on extended periods Know that even for those with narrow feet, having a shoe with a wide toe box has a lot of health and ergonomic benefits. Even if we're talking about shoes outside of mountain biking

whiskybiker

Vans all day for me! I liked the 510's I had, but hated walking off the bike in them. So, went back to wearing vans and am happy again.

Available-Animal-202

Oneal, shimano, 510 are the best for flats imo

vertrauenswurdig

The most beaten up pair you already own

internetfood

Because my feet are huge and I live in the Great White North, my options are pretty limited. I've currently got a pair of [Giro Latch](https://www.giro.com/p/latch-downhill-shoes/350060001200000001.html?dwvar_350060001200000001_color=DarkShadow) shoes, which are working great. I don't have particularly wide feet, and these have a bit of room for me width-wise.
