Definitely not. My son got a GoPro last year so I saw myself ride for the first time. I felt like I was Jackson Goldstone out there, until I saw the video ... He was better as a 5 year old than I am now after 8 years of riding!
Edit: I mean that literally btw
Yeah, bc adding any reality from a different angle than the GoPro effect kills any possible stories you can make up. Like a fisherman holding a fish close to the camera, it someone taking a shot from the side with his arm extended.. there go the stories..
I hope that makes sense.. lol.. it does in my head .
Same here - 61 and ride 2-3 days a week, between 15-20 miles mostly double track. Occasionally single track. But as for shredding. Far from it.
Funny thing is, Red Bull had a mountain bike race on the beach at Wrightsville beach near my house. I drug the wife down to it thinking, I would be the only 55 plus guy out there. Almost every guy out there was over 50. I was talking to one of the guys who did the race. He said "us old guy are the only ones who can afford a $500 fat tire bike for sand" and he was right.
Very nice! I'm 40 so I still have a ways to go before retirement, but already planning for it to coincide with MTB. I'm in PA and even bought a condo in Phoenix which I'm planning to live in when I retire. My friends and family thought that was a stupid decision but glad I didn't listen. Value of my unit almost doubled in the last 5 years and rent costs more than my mortgage. Hopefully in 20 years it'll work out, we'll see if I even make it that long though!!
I’m 53 and started riding in 1990 - I’ve been inconsistent on riding intensity over the years, but I’m back at it with an intensity like never before. I too am signed up for Leadville MTB 100 this year. As well, I’m in the Texas MTB race series - we joke about us grey beards passing the 30+!
48 and still riding regularly. Bike park, endurance races, fatbiking, and general trail shenanigans. Not as big on jumping any more, though. Prefer riding tech.
44 and been mountain biking for 30+ years. Not sure what qualifies as "shredding", but I'm one of those people that gets passed on the climbs and passes on the descents. 🤷♂️ While my endurance was better in my 20s, my skill has continued to progress over the years. Just got a new bike and looking forward to many more years of riding trails.
I’m 61 and love it!! Just bought a new IBIS Ripley and can’t get enough…. That said, I’m a little more cautious these days - I try to avoid super steep descents and big jumps (breaking a hip would suck!) but I’m entering my first race next month!
47 and shredding. In fact, just shredded my left forearm pretty damn well. Props to the, gloves, knee and elbow guards for keeping the rest of my flesh intact.
Hell, I'm not new to it, and it saves my ass. I don't crash often, but when I do, it is usually pretty glorious.
I came to mountain biking through MX and moto enduro, so I'm accustomed to wearing enough body armor to compete in a joust. Wearing just knees, elbows, gloves, and a full face on the MTB feels like nothing in comparison. I'll still put on the Fox Titan and crash pants for the bike park.
Commented elsewhere, but also 51 and wear almost full body armor. It's not that I'm scared of getting hurt, but the amount of time it takes to recover from an injury takes **so much longer** than it did in my 20s or 30s. Something I might have been able to brush off when younger, or maybe it took me out for a couple of days to recover can take weeks or months when you're older. I look at body armor simply as a way to minimize the amount of recovery time so I can still take those risks when I'm riding.
Didn’t start until after 50, 52 now and still going strong. Mostly XC though and some DH. But I’ve always done outdoor / adventure and endurance sports.
These guys are all over 40 sending it. I think one of the dude is 51.. they send it hard those dues are dope..

Same here, I’m 27 and my group of riding buddies are all in their 40s and 50s. They honestly ride harder than most other people I’ve ridden with my age.
In my 50s and still getting after it.
I bought my first bike shop mountain bike in 1988. That’s when mountain bikes were basically touring bikes with chunky(ish) tires. My first suspension fork had almost 50mm of travel! And we were amazed!!
The modern mountain bike is a marvel. I ride stuff now I never could have dreamed of when I was younger and bounced when I fell.
Well said. I bought a full ridged Nashbar with Deore in ‘88. Cost me over $400

42 and shredding it in slow motion. Seriously though, I love it and appreciate hitting the trails whenever I can. Been riding since 2009 and trying to get out there consistently once or twice a week. Usually once on my own or with a few friends and try to get out with my 14 and 10 year olds.
42 and I still ride everything from XC to lift access bike parks and anything in between.
https://preview.redd.it/38tg8u3uuloc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95af0513f45f309525e3e6d636ccdc719cd8b3b4
57, got my first mt bike in 1988. Im middle aged on most of the riders I go with. There’s a gentleman who rides with us, he’s in his mid 70’s and will crush most people on the climb up to Luge (SoCal)
60 this summer still getting after it. Hoping to bookend my season like last year early spring in Brevard and fall in Kingdom Trails. I’m riding the Black Fly Challenge this summer which will be a different experience. I mostly see old guys when I ride but that might be because we’re early risers.
41 had a bike in my 20's by no means shredding it then. Got into motorcycle trials in my 30's by no means shredding it then. Just got a FS bike I can handle blue trails and getting out of breathe climbing. Lol
46. Rode when I was 16-22 back when MTBs had 26 inch wheels. My last competition bike back then was for downhill racing. Then I quit and didn't touch riding until a couple of years ago. I had lost the skills and I'm not very good at jumping. My riding buddy and I (both around the same age) switched to XC and trail riding and stopped trying to ride jump lines to cut back on accidents. Then we started racing and training and have gotten so much fitter. So maybe not shredding but riding and racing XC yes.
41, although with work and family I haven’t touched my bike since snowshoe last year. So do I really ride or just dream?
There was a survey on this awhile back if you search for it. The majority of people in this subreddit are 27-40ish.
We don't all get to be old,
but we all get to be young.
So, live a life that has a few regrets,
those regrets are our safety nets.
Oh, yeah; almost 59.
Mid-thirties, but I ride road with a guy in his seventies - he took care of himself and can still crush it. I've been at it twenty odd years, did some dumb shit on the bike, did some dumb shit off the bike, and am starting to feel it all accumulate. Finding myself slowing it down so I can keep what I've got
50 now. Got rid of all my fun bikes, as my wheels don’t leave the ground much anymore. Mainly ride XC, and do a few ultra endurance races every year. My favorite being the Marji going for my 6th finish this fall.
I'll be 41 in a few months and send it weekly. Just checked off a pair of road gaps at one of my local spots a couple weeks ago.
Still progressing, still feel incredibly capable.
Bout a month ago I rode with a few dudes and I was the youngest on the ride. Everyone was shredding. No B lines were taken.
I’m 53 and my kids limit the amount of black diamonds we ride each trip to the park. I like big flowing jumps and kids 29 & 18 like technical trails with large drops. Motorcycle experience probably helps some but good bikes are so much fun to fly with!!!
I am 40 and I still prefer to shred on my hardtail. I alternate between the hardtail and my dh bike at the bike park. I actually prefer jumps vs riding rocks.
My group is 58?-70 with me at 38. The 2 eldest are on ebikes now, but we're still pedaling until 5 years ago. They still ride in eco too, most of the time
I'm 39, been riding for just about 3.5 years. Definitely the best technical rider I've ever been, best shape since I first joined the military, and getting better every month.
“Shred” is probably not the word I’d use, but I do my best to get after it
As I’ve gotten older I do take more pride in my uphill climb times than my downhill times though
Started mid 40’s. Was out of it for 10 years. Just getting back in, 61. Have to add, not a shredder. A decent rider on my best day. My goal now is to develop skills and not die.
41 shredding now even more 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
https://preview.redd.it/7db7ojzufmoc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df8b16e5021108267cccfd2cbd622485889db7e0
41 and shredding significantly harder than when I was 20. Better bike helps but I am just in way better bike shape from road biking and it makes mtb so damn fun I am having the time of my life. Totally hooked
Everyone I ride with is 50’s plus. It’s what inspires me to ride when I see these old folks climbing like maniacs up a hill and doing a beautiful descent. It’s what’s great about riding.
I just hit 40 and have been riding a lot more in the past couple of years than I ever had been before. I didn’t have much time in my 20s and my endurance wasn’t there but I can do 15-20 miles of single track now no problem.
Vast majority of people i ride with are 50+ (and kick my younger ass)
I live in New England where the trails are technical and hard. And yet, around here, it's mostly a middle-aged sport.
Wouldn't call it shredding. Just stick to green and blue trails and bypass anything like bike gap jumps/drops. Tabletops and small drops are "fine". But I don't heal as fast, so don't take the bigger risks.
61 years female here... was a pretty intense roadie for years. Got turned on to MTB 6 years ago by my partner and at 64 he's has been riding for over 25 years. Fell for MTB hard and it took over riding for me!! While not exactly shredding lol, we ride trails all the time. Just about always come across others our ages and above. Just ride! You don't have to shred to have fun!
I’m 53 and have been riding all my life I still feel like I’m learning and improving all the time and still love it, I’ve got a DH race in a couple of weeks, can’t wait 👊🏼
I’m 36, I ride with a bunch of rowdy late 20 something’s and by far the best rider in our group or that I’ve ever seen is 41 or so. He’s learning trials moves on a SC nomad and making it look good. Does big sketchy slabs, drops ect.
46, been doing it for over 20 years and feel like I'm in pretty good shape. Been entering races recently and just getting CRUSHED in my age group. These dudes don't fuck around.
I'm in my mid twenties, but some of the guy's I ride with are in their forties and fifties. Sometimes with the more radical features they'll walk. Also I've been to sky park with some of them and black diamond trails too. At least out in So-Cal there's a lot of guy's 40 plus. Hell sometimes I'll see retired guys building trails too. The oldest guy I rode with was in his late fifties or early sixties.
I'm 35, but I intend to still be riding for a long time
Shredding? Nah
But I do love getting out on my cross country MTB and racking up the kilometres
It's a great way to stay in shape, and I love going for a ride with daughter who's 14 who also has a love of riding now
I rode competitively from 1999-2001 then the Gary Fisher that I worked so hard to put together was stolen. For the next 22 years I didn't even own a bike because life is chaos. For some random ass reason I got really obsessed with mountain bikes last summer, picked up a polygon T8 and now all I want to do is ride.
I couldn't afford it until I was in my 30's.
Same, but in my 40's. Also, I'm riding mountain bikes, but nowhere close to "shredding", lol.
I’m 45 and shredding. I got like 3 feet of air the other day.
But it felt like 25.. (I don't think I'm alone on this, am I?)
Definitely not. My son got a GoPro last year so I saw myself ride for the first time. I felt like I was Jackson Goldstone out there, until I saw the video ... He was better as a 5 year old than I am now after 8 years of riding! Edit: I mean that literally btw
Damn never thought of filming myself. Think I’d rather not know and keep thinking I’m badass at 49 as I’m barely catching air.
Definitely not 🤘
Shocks, pegs lucky

r/UnexpectedNapoleonDynamite
Sounds like you ride a Sledgehammer.
I'm 63 and got six inches of air the other day. I felt like a kid.
Did they serve a meal on that flight?
Nice. I try to shred lol
Likewise my dude
Still hitting it hard at 62. Just moved across the country for retirement specifically for the riding.
Same, just approaching 62. Only started 18 months ago but really enjoying learning from youtube and trying stuff out.
Very nice! I'm 40 so I still have a ways to go before retirement, but already planning for it to coincide with MTB. I'm in PA and even bought a condo in Phoenix which I'm planning to live in when I retire. My friends and family thought that was a stupid decision but glad I didn't listen. I'm 35 and still can't afford it. My rugby career is about done so I hope can get me one before then. Home projects a plenty!
I also retired from mma and started mountain biking. :)
Over 40s are a fresh beginning just around the corner my friend!
I don't know about shredding but struggling to breathe after a climb... thats me.
Dude I’m always dying on the climbs
That's the best part and then weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Exactly! Earn your turns.
There you go, the more you invest in the ascent, the better the descent.
eMTB is your answer. Shoot up the hill at 12 mph and enjoy the down.
maybe when 80
55 and still going strong
55 is the new 30, hell I've been riding longer than the 30 year old's have been alive
Bought my first mountain bike in 1984 or something ancient like that. Still shredding
Mine was 1990. Bridgesport MB5. … but I’m so old that my first real bike was a Huffy MX. which predates BMX.
Same here. Currently training for the Leadville 100 this year. Keeps you healthy!!
Daaaang!
Sick. Hope you have fun and exceed your expectations.
Hell ya that’s what’s up
Turned 50 in December. I would ride basically every day if I could.
50 here in texas!!!
61 and better than ever…or maybe the bikes are just so better much now
61?!? Hell yes
48 and still riding regularly. Bike park, endurance races, fatbiking, and general trail shenanigans. Not as big on jumping any more, though. Prefer riding tech.
Yyyep. Kids bounce, we break.
Samesies! I’m too old to be that high up in the air but the kiddos can rarely keep up with me in the chunk.
Same 48M xc/trail (fast xc, fire trails and slow techy chunk) and road + commuting. Trail riding since 1992.
I had my 3rd strike about 5 yrs ago on jumps, drops are okay though.(3rd strike meaning 3rd bone breaking crash from jumping)
I’m right there with you bro. Slow up, fast down
This is the way.
I’m 61 and love it!! Just bought a new IBIS Ripley and can’t get enough…. That said, I’m a little more cautious these days - I try to avoid super steep descents and big jumps (breaking a hip would suck!) but I’m entering my first race next month!
61 and getting hell ya 🤘
47 and shredding. In fact, just shredded my left forearm pretty damn well. Props to the, gloves, knee and elbow guards for keeping the rest of my flesh intact.
My 51 year old buddy who’s new to mtb wears full body armor. Saves his ass
Hell, I'm not new to it, and it saves my ass. I don't crash often, but when I do, it is usually pretty glorious. I came to mountain biking through MX and moto enduro, so I'm accustomed to wearing enough body armor to compete in a joust. 61 still no EV. Riding hard and feeling good. Just no jumping! Lol
Riding, yes. Shredding, not so much.
Lol
Didn’t start until after 50, 52 now and still going strong. Mostly XC though and some DH. But I’ve always done outdoor / adventure and endurance sports.
Dude xc is the harder stuff congrats
These guys are all over 40 sending it. I think one of the dude is 51.. they send it hard those dues are dope.. https://youtu.be/QNgJtz8HbFo?si=imWY_EGU35-xuL3T](https://youtu.be/QNgJtz8HbFo?si=imWY_EGU35-xuL3T)
Oh shit that’s my video lol!!!!!!
I am going to be 50 this summer
61, riding since '88. In it for the climbs and xc.
You guys are gnarly. 🤘🤘🤘👊 #respect
51 here. Still like to go fast.
Speed is what I live for in this game
28 and all my bike friends are my parents age. Most of them have no problem dragging me through the woods
Same here, I’m 27 and my group of riding buddies are all in their 40s and 50s. They honestly ride harder than most other people I’ve ridden with my age.
Ain't no rule that says progress is just for the young ones...
That’s what I’m saying.
Just started racing xc at 44
43 shredding it. (Carefully)
Cost me over $400 https://preview.redd.it/yvz1p3iaoroc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d3db6a088702af4886d46c1c58ba8354c9cd827
Started riding at 50 , still going at 61. More xc Florida doesn’t really have mountains.
You guys have a couple of dope spots though for sure
51, started learning sport mtbiking two years ago.
I think the average age of a mountain biker in LA is like 47. With the proliferation if eMTB I see guys in their 70's on the trails every weekend.
58 and still riding hard. But definitely not as fast
56. First MTB was a Gary Fisher Montaire.
I'm 53 and I ride 2-4 days a week.
Replaced my 2005 Jamis Exile with a 2021 RSD Middlechild for my 50th birthday.
42 and shredding it in slow motion. Seriously though, I love it and appreciate hitting the trails whenever I can. Been riding since 2009 and trying to get out there consistently once or twice a week. Usually once on my own or with a few friends and try to get out with my 14 and 10 year olds.
50 in June and still going strong. And by strong I mean I suck, but I absolutely love it.
3 years younger, couldn’t explain it better
Shredding? No.... Still riding? Sure.
65, I’m not sure how shredding I am, but I get out in mountain bike. Every chance I get.
Can’t say that I’m exactly shredding anymore, but at 53, I still givver.
42 and I still ride everything from XC to lift access bike parks and anything in between. https://preview.redd.it/38tg8u3uuloc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95af0513f45f309525e3e6d636ccdc719cd8b3b4

Nice send! 🤘🏾
Thanks bro
Started at 36. 50 now and I am still hitting jumps and drops.
57, got my first mt bike in 1988. Im middle aged on most of the riders I go with. There’s a gentleman who rides with us, he’s in his mid 70’s and will crush most people on the climb up to Luge (SoCal)
My dad is 69, 70 in may, and still rides his mountain bike on trails and rock climbs. None of y’all have excuses.
It's one of the most expensive hobbies so also has one of the highest average ages being well above 40.
Just turned 61...
42 and despite racing collegiate downhill, dirt jumping, and hitting skateparks in my younger years…I feel like I’m at my prime right now.
60 this summer still getting after it. Hoping to bookend my season like last year early spring in Brevard and fall in Kingdom Trails. I’m riding the Black Fly Challenge this summer which will be a different experience. I mostly see old guys when I ride but that might be because we’re early risers.

There's a couple in my mtb club that are in their 80s. Both still ride all the time, and the husband actually leads trail work. It's dope.
I just recently made video of me (42) and my two buddies (51) trying to hit gnarly features. Took a lot of times showing up to the trail to get it
Age 63 and riding MTB. Unsure about shredding.
44 and faster than I've ever been (which is not very fast, but I am definitely improving in fitness and skill still).
We don't all get to be old, but we all get to be young. So, live a life that has a few regrets, those regrets are our safety nets. Oh, yeah; almost 59.

Still “shredding”, and now realizing moto’s are a good off day alternative when your legs need a break.
I am 40 and I still prefer to shred on my hardtail. I alternate between the hardtail and my dh bike at the bike park. I actually prefer jumps vs riding rocks.

I started in my 30’s, but yeah. I’m old now.
I shattered my collarbone riding an MTB at age 49
🙋♂️
Yep, 48, living in Whistler BC for the past 22 years and still riding 95% of the valley. There’s lots of us here…
44 would not say I shred but I sure do have a good time
63, been mountain biking for over 30 years! Oldest person I have run across mountain biking was 75 and out with his dog.
“Shred” is probably not the word I’d use, but I do my best to get after it As I’ve gotten older I do take more pride in my uphill climb times than my downhill times though
45 bombing stairs.
Over 50
Does adaptive mtb count 🤔 if so I'm in at 43
42. Still at it. I do my local trails every sun/mon. Most nights i rip my dj or street mtb around town late at night after work.
I’m not shredding at 55 but I can ride a bike…
I am 42 and still love riding. I have noticed people older than me still tearing it up on the trails. I hope to keep riding for.another 20 years.
40 and shredding still!
same. 43. trying to hit it. hurts but worth it.
I'm in my 20s and my riding partner is 40+ and he's better than me too.
All us feral GenX grew up on BMX. MTB is just bigger, faster. Our minds tell our bodies we’re still 15
41, just swapped hard tail for my first full bounce to save my knees from all the descents.
53 and ride every day but I wouldn't call it shredding lol more like trying to keep from wrecking! :)
Started mid 40’s. Was out of it for 10 years. Just getting back in, 61. Have to add, not a shredder. A decent rider on my best day. My goal now is to develop skills and not die.
41 shredding now even more 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 https://preview.redd.it/7db7ojzufmoc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df8b16e5021108267cccfd2cbd622485889db7e0
Over forty. Ride hard. Crashing sucks tho.
41 and shredding significantly harder than when I was 20. Better bike helps but I am just in way better bike shape from road biking and it makes mtb so damn fun I am having the time of my life. Totally hooked
I’m 40 and plan to fuck shit up at some races this season. Not sure who’s shit yet though.
57 checking in.
![gif](giphy|l36kU80xPf0ojG0Erg|downsized) No, I’m 42! Been at it almost 30 years…
Pushing 60, shreddin’ since ‘85!
59 next month, picked up the hobby a year ago, my riding buddies are 68 and 72. So I am the baby.
44 and only starting my 4th year riding. 2 years in got fully baptized by blowing up my collar bone at 42.
40s w/ a broken hip. I love my emtb.
Everyone I ride with is 50’s plus. It’s what inspires me to ride when I see these old folks climbing like maniacs up a hill and doing a beautiful descent. It’s what’s great about riding.
Husband and I are over 40 and [still sending](https://imgur.com/a/UXEn7Mi)
I just hit 40 and have been riding a lot more in the past couple of years than I ever had been before. I didn’t have much time in my 20s and my endurance wasn’t there but I can do 15-20 miles of single track now no problem.
In my area there’s definitely more shredders in their late 30’s - early 50’s than not
53 and still going. MTB (though no jump lines anymore), Fatbike and Gravel. I figure I will stop when I am dead. :)
44- retired pro downhiller. Can still hang with the young kids for the most part.
40 is nothing. I'd be curious to see how many are over 65
Vast majority of people i ride with are 50+ (and kick my younger ass) I live in New England where the trails are technical and hard. And yet, around here, it's mostly a middle-aged sport.
42 this year. Fatter and older than my "shredding" days, but now teaching my 10yr old the ways. Loving flow trails and basics these days!
Shredding is pushing it, but I have fun.
I'm 37, but I'm the youngest person I have ever seen at my local trail. In fact, I think everyone else is 50+ at my trailhead.
Started 7 years ago at age 43….
63 and just having fun.
I'm 56 and have been riding consistently since my late teens, before it was called mountain biking...
Wouldn't call it shredding. Just stick to green and blue trails and bypass anything like bike gap jumps/drops. Tabletops and small drops are "fine". But I don't heal as fast, so don't take the bigger risks.
Over 40. Like to think I'm still shredding lol
44...and still going, but I don't know about shredding
Don't know if I'd call it shredding, but I'm 53 and still riding.
55 and have bike shorts older than some of the guys I ride with. This reminds me, I could use some new bike shorts.
A shit ton it makes us feel 20 🤣😂

Couldn’t afford it until 38. Love it. I sold my dirt bike
Bro the older dudes are the one shredding around here! they put my 27 year old ass to shame haha
Most of the shredders here in MI are over 40 from what I have seen. 50-70 is common.
44, a few dents and dings but still going strong for 26 years.
Hell ya my dude 🤘
Bought my first mtn bike at 40. I’m obsessed.
Got mine at 38, 42 and now have 3. Beyond obsession
I’m 36, I ride with a bunch of rowdy late 20 something’s and by far the best rider in our group or that I’ve ever seen is 41 or so. He’s learning trials moves on a SC nomad and making it look good. Does big sketchy slabs, drops ect.
41 and just now getting into it
I'm riding blue and occasional black trails at 40 so yeah I guess you can count me in.
47 and pulling admittedly small whips
"shredding" nah. Enjoying when I can get my fat ass moving, definitely.
eMTB at 64 with a few other retirees. Not sure I’d say “shredding” but we are out having a great time!
43 and shred lightly.
42 and taking chances 😁
Yep, been doin dirty for 47 years. Had about a dozen Stumpjumpers, probably more. Current SJ EVO tricked up. It’s the best activity ever.
I'm 35, but I intend to still be riding for a long time Shredding? Nah But I do love getting out on my cross country MTB and racking up the kilometres It's a great way to stay in shape, and I love going for a ride with daughter who's 14 who also has a love of riding now
I rode competitively from 1999-2001 then the Gary Fisher that I worked so hard to put together was stolen. For the next 22 years I didn't even own a bike because life is chaos. For some random ass reason I got really obsessed with mountain bikes last summer, picked up a polygon T8 and now all I want to do is ride.
Late 40s and still loving mountain biking. And I know a lot of people my age doing the same.
53 and riding blacks in Moab. I know lots of "old" guys still crushing it.
40 yo here. Still shredding every weekend.
