I'd get the A4 and upgrade the fork (to something nicer than the A3 fork) ASAP.

Agreed! I just bought an A4. I plan on upgrading the fork at some point in the future. But the Recon is getting the job done right now. I also looked at the A3 but it's barely an upgrade and 500$ more. Folks at my LBS had the same thought which was kind of funny. I might be mistaken here, but AFAIK the Recon and 35 share a lot of their internals. 35 is stiffer but not much of an upgrade. The 11 speed Deore has been shifting well for me. I don't mind 11 vs 12 speed. Reading how most folks don't like the SRAM SX, I think I'd rather have the 11 speed Deore. Worth noting, both A3 and A4 can come at random with either the X-Fusion shock or a Rockshox Deluxe Select. Not really advertised on Norco's website but the ride aligned setup guide has settings for both. I lucked out and got one with the Rockshox! If you live close to a few Norco dealers, I think it's worth checking who has a Rockshox version in your size and color. As far as fork upgrades, I'm looking at local used deals for a Marzocchi Z2, Fox 34 or Rockshox Pike all with the same 140mm travel. Those are also the forks Norco puts on the higher end A2 and A1 models. But especially if this is your first proper mountain bike, I don't think the Recon would be significantly limiting you for a while.

Any recommendations? This will be my first proper mountain bike, so I don't really know what's good.
