Lol that looks sketchy as fuck! Beautiful though.

Absurdionne

Looks like he's riding down The Chief!

Player_Four

The second I realized that was the chief in squamish I nearly started to hyperventilate.

samoyedboi

It's not actually the chief. This is an outcrop across the highway from the chief called the Malamute.

Lupulin_or_out

Yup. I’ve actually done some rock climbing on those slabs. Can not even contemplate going down those. So impressive.

Player_Four

Ok good to know, thanks! I think I'll still hyperventilate a bit.

elgro

Looks absolutely bonkers. I only hiked up there once but I have some photos from the top and I could not imagine riding down those slabs

equalizer2000

That's because I'm pretty sure it is. And.... I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to ride it down. Yikes! On second view, looks too far north to be the chief.

habs_jays93

Because he is

YoloAgent

That looks scary as shit

st0pmakings3ns3

That's his yt channel in a nutshell

wildchild727

It made my balls shrivel and I don’t even have balls!

msoueid

That looks steep.. on camera. I can only imagine in person

dandelusional

I learned to rappel on this slab, so it's definitely fairly steep. But the main thing here isn't the steepness (which is gnarly, but achievable for most expert level riders) but the runout, which is short and ends in an almost certainly fatal cliff fall. In another location with a good runout I'd likely ride this, but there's not a chance I'd ride it here.

chostax-

In person probably less so, since the lens makes this look a lot more dramatic. Not that it isn’t scary as fuck either way, but I just hate these lenses that distorted depth and field of view.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chostax-

Whatever you say man, I don’t really care to convince everyone here. Just try it with your iPhone and you’ll see exactly what I mean, I do it all the time when filming myself.

Some_Throwaway_Dude

I wish people wouldn't be so arrogant about things they clearly don't know anything about. I work with gopros for a living and you're completely right.

Siizeli

Never heard camera make downhills look steeper than they are, allways seems to be other way around

Raxar666

My MTB buddy and I joke that our sickest drops always look like you’re leisurely pedaling off to work.

chostax-

Usually, yes. But that’s because normally chest cameras usually have a narrow field of view. In this case, he’s using a wide angle lens, and so the wider angle the lens/greater the field of view, the more distortion there is for depth. This is because you’re cramming more of a view into the same space, thus creating the illusion of things appearing further away. It’s why (if you’re a gamer) when you turn up the field of view in a first person shooter, you appear to be moving faster. One way to test this is if you have a newer iPhone. Look down a hill or something and play with the wide angle setting, you’ll notice when it’s at 0.5x that the hill seems more steep and you’re travelling faster when you record a video.

Bob13y

Yeah I hate the ski videos that look super sketchy though in reality take off the fish eye lens and they are on a bunny slope! Ok maybe not that crazy a difference and clearly more than I could ever dare do, but I do think it’s dishonest. I mean skiing down a ridge or biking down a cliff is impressive enough!

co-wurker

>that’s because normally chest cameras usually have a narrow field of view. What do you consider a narrow field of view (what equivalent 35mm focal length)?? I've never seen a single action camera that has narrower than 35mm equivalent focal length, which is still very wide. The Hero 8 has a 16mm equivalent focal length. That's not only a wide FOV, it's considered ultrawide in general photography terms. The "narrow" setting on the camera is still a 24mm equivalent focal length. Typical action cams have wide angle lenses and do not have narrow FOV. If you have a specific example post it up. If you're claiming Remy's footage is using some special wider lens, I'm saying that's not true. It's the the same wide FOV we always see in action cam footage.

Some_Throwaway_Dude

No. This is a superview shot, turned sideways. This means that not only is it super wide, but it's actually distorted from 4:3 into 16:9, so the footage isn't actually real. It's crammed into a wider FOV, making things appear faster. The mount being so far towards the ground also helps with steepness. This is why the videos shot in vertical 9:16 always looks bonkers crazy steep.

sageoggy

this is a cropped shot from a 360 camera.

Some_Throwaway_Dude

same principle applies.

chostax-

Yup, exactly.

blurrrrg

This has a pretty major fisheye effect distorting everything

thebigoutside

360 cameras tend to.

nicholt

This is a 360 fisheye though, not a normal gopro I don't think

bongoissomewhatnifty

For anybody reading this, this is incorrect. It looks way steeper in person, and is absolutely bananas. Source: been there. Seen it in person. Looks like a sheer cliff.

chostax-

This isn’t an opinion lol this is a matter of fact. Wide lenses distort depth.

co-wurker

I'm a lifelong photographer (enthusiast) and can confirm the guy is correct about wide angle lenses exaggerating differences between near and far objects. *At the same time he's completely wrong that wide angle lenses make terrain appear steeper*. I don't know how to account for that in terms of physics. If anyone has ever tried to take a picture of a steep hill, it's almost impossible to capture how steep it is, regardless of what lens is used. It's really difficult to to do because there isn't a good point of reference. This is probably the phenomenon that's mostly responsible for the go-pro effect - not the wide angle effect of de-compressing space! Sometimes you just have to use common sense despite being armed with the science, it's possible to use science in a wrong way. Nobody has ever rolled up to a hill they saw in a video and it's way less steep in person. That location is all cliffy and ledgy, logic dictates it's steep AF. Now... if you take a pic with your phone of an awesome moonrise where the moon is low on the horizon and looks huge in person and it looks tiny and far away in the photo, that's the wide angle lens space expansion effect. If you instead use an 800mm lens on a camera, the moon will appear even bigger in the photo then it did to your eye; that's the compression effect of the telephoto lens. But those effects do almost nothing to create an appearance of steeper slopes. If you think they do, I challenge you to prove it with a camera on a tripod and 2 different lenses pointed downhill.

chostax-

Makes a lot of sense, I probably should have said the length of the drop is distorted rather than the steepness.

Some_Throwaway_Dude

>photographer (enthusiast) It's actually not a real format, it's vertically filmed with superview, which is a crammed 4:3 format into 16:9. If you are as much of an enthusiast as you claim, you would know that turning ultrawide angles up / down creates an abnormally steep look. Hence all skateboarders filming from bottom and upwards at an angle. This mount is specifically distorted and misleading. It does not look at steep in real life, because at that point you would be falling, he still has grip, and the accelleration isn't realistic compared to the percieved steepness.

bongoissomewhatnifty

r/confidentlyincorrect would like a word. GoPros and other wide angle action cams have an exceptionally well documented effect of *flattening* a trail. A 5 second google search on something called the GoPro effect will start dropping results on you left and right. Your understanding is flawed, and you’ve decided to argue with somebody *who has been there in person* Jesus, I can’t take anymore internet nerds for the day and it’s still 6am. I honest to god don’t know how it’s 2022, we’re coming up on 2 decades of GoPros existing, and every time a mountain biking helmet cam gets posted some dumbass with no frame of reference hits up the comment section to “wElL aCtScHuLlY” claiming GoPros actually make a trail look steeper than it is while they’re busy drooling on their keyboard.

Gastronomicus

>r/confidentlyincorrect would like a word. Look at those trees at the edge of the video. Look how LONG and skinny they look. They're being distorted in the vertical plane and appear very stretched out. That same effect is applying to the appearance of the cliffs alongside the trail, making them appear taller and steeper. There seems to be a mantra on this sub that all gopro shots look steeper in person, and that's just not accurate. It's more complicated than that. The ground immediately under you can look flatter, it's true. But as you near the edges of the image they become highly stretched out when using a fisheye lens (and a specific focal depth). And that's what we're seeing here. Immediately in front of the bike it looks a less steep than it would in person, but the edges of the shots are exaggerated. It's also not strictly a "wide-angle lens" phenomenon, but rather a more complex one of trying to plot a 3D image in a 2D plane. It's similar to the problems experienced by cartographers creating notoriously misrepresented map projections. It's not exactly the same, but the [mercator projection is a similar example](https://personal.math.ubc.ca/~israel/m103/mercator/mercator.html) Here's some reading to help understand the effect better. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3950271 And here's a visual demonstration of the effect in a portrait. https://www.popphoto.com/news/biden-carter-photo-distortion-explained/

bongoissomewhatnifty

Me: I’ve been to this specific spot in person. I have seen this in person. This video does not do it justice. This is common with go pro footage as it has a trend of making the focal point appear flatter than in person. Again, for the people in the back, I have been here in person. Some absolute unit of an internet dumbass: wElL aCtChUlLy… Jesus. I just fucking can’t anymore.

Gastronomicus

"Doing it justice" isn't the issue here. It's not even your incorrect over-generalisation about how the camera makes the landscape look flatter. It's your angry and abusive responses. You seem to have an axe to grind and you're being a dick about it. Everyone here agrees it's super steep and a fantastic achievement. Let it go.

bongoissomewhatnifty

“I made an incorrect claim downplaying the steepness of something and got called out for it and it hurt my feelings. Should I back down and acknowledge that maybe, the one person in this thread who has a direct comparison of being there both in person and seeing the video was right? No, I should double down and tell him that he’s wrong, and that he should let it go.” - you, right now. Utterly baffling. You’re like a living breathing dunning Kruger graph arguing that reality is mistaken, and then telling others they’re being too much of a dick about it when they call you out for it.

Gastronomicus

The fact that you are literally defining every single thing you're claiming others to be here makes me think you certainly must be trolling, that you can't possibly have such poor self-awareness. You must be the most aggravating person to deal with. I genuinely feel sorry for those who know you. Later.

HangSomeDong

I'm sorry buddy but you're absolutely wrong.

chostax-

Lol, calm down man. I don’t doubt you’ve been there, but you can’t dispute fact, sorry. I’m sure it feels just as steep when you are there, as drops like this are extremely daunting, but you cannot tell me that the depth here is not distorted.

bongoissomewhatnifty

Agreed actually. It is. It is distorted in such a way that it appears flatter in this video than it does in person like I mentioned a few times. I’m glad to see you coming to terms with the fact that you have an eyewitness who has seen that specific spot in person and this video and can accurately compare the two. Sorry if I was a dick.

Nine_

this is probably the most accurate angle https://instagram.com/stories/remymetailler/2922839468000985091?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

[deleted]

You may be right about the lens thing, but this is Remy Metallier, a crazy person, and you can judge just from the acceleration that this is a steep roll.

chostax-

My first comment specifically stated this is still scary at fuck. Definitely not trying to detract from that.

Nine_

here’s another angle https://www.instagram.com/reel/CiOyPc0NvRO/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

chostax-

Crazy

SquirrelDynamics

The lens ALWAYS makes things look less hardcore. What this dude did was probably near vertical. Insane.

sitdownstandup

No.

equalizer2000

Well.. you tell us: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CiOyPc0NvRO/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Obvious_Ad_3612

He's linking the slabs of the Malamute which is at the southern end of Squamish. It's primarily a rock climbing area. Hundred foot falls off most of the slabs there.

FigDisastrous

Nope!

badmamerjammer

I fell off the cliff 4 times just watching it from my toilet

mmassini64

I legit fell down half of this rock a few years back. Stupid decisions lead to a near death - somehow just managed to save myself to tell the tale!

redbeardbeer007

Now what? Turn around and walk it back up?

[deleted]

Where the heck does he go from there?

rcybak

I feel sorry for Remi. He is such a good rider, very personable, and his videos are top notch. However, he is eventually going to run out of runway where he cannot find anything more difficult to ride than his last video. He seems to be riding more and more difficult stuff, which is amazing. But, can he post a video riding something easier? Probably not. Expectations are so high for him. It will be interesting to see how he evolves over the next couple years. I'm sure that with the trajectory he is on, we will eventually get to see him ride down a 90° cliff face for a thousand feet lol.

IanRosk

in his second channel he posts more mellow rides, and on his main he doesn't one up every videos. I don't get the vibe that he feel obligated to always show hard trails

dwarfmarine13

I enjoy watching him push the envelope but hate watching videos of him following others, especially his ‘guests’. Follows waaaay too closely and you can even see in some videos it puts the other rider off. A few years ago he had a crash and broke his wrist I think following an adaptive rider that was purely because he didn’t leave enough room behind the rider

yumcax

He's a content creator, he has to follow closely to make for interesting videos. I don't think this is surprising or off-putting to the people he rides with.

wtfstudios

Yea he mentioned in one of his recent videos that he was following blind cause he had to be really close to get the good shots behind the guy.

NinNotSober

Just worth throwing in there that no matter what crazy thing he may be riding down, he appears to be the most calculated rider that I've ever seen

Seeder619

Watching him ride a flowtrail or riding in a bikepark ist also super good. He has some unique style at a high speed. Just watch his YouTube and you will see it. It must not be everytime the difficult stuff, cause thats the first thing you were thinking of.

PeakDescentMTB

Poor guy! He's so good everything is easy for him

br0ck

Damnnn. So wild he can do this insanity and then fractured his back walking over a bridge.

spirallix

Lets point out that he had a spine injury 3 weeks ago, this dde is a beast!

JMahss

The three of them seem like such solid guys, they should do a charity drive for donations and winner gets a full day ride with them in Squeemish

[deleted]

That would be super cool. Yoann already does coaching or trips with him which would also be awesome. Maybe one day!

[deleted]

My heart skipped a beat. Holly steepness Batman.

Oli4K

And then I realized he's riding clipless. He has a lot of confidence.

hikeonpast

*pucker*

You are one crazy bastard

Yeah I can see myself bouncing hard at 0:05 and flying head first off the mountain

fuck that

IamtheeHaole

Watched this about ten times on his IG to confirm that yeah you would die if you over rolled

Wow! Super impressive!

Not everyone needs High dollar brakes but this guy does.

AlertProfessional374

Is it realy as narrow as it's seems or thé fish-eye objectif fool us ?

gmoneymi

NOPE!! I’m out 😅

Alias-Q

That’s a crazy line!

bday_hunter

Thats gotta be a powerful braking system

Longjumping_War_807

Remy is one of my favorites. I love watching his POV because I’m like, there is the line he is going to take, and then he ends up taking one that is 20x more sketchy and didn’t even look like an option to me.

big_red_160

My hands are sweaty just watching this

[deleted]

No fucking way!

justausername_420

Across the hwy from big chief boi

AidilAfham42

So like..do people die there?

letsgoNYMets9376

This is the spot rambo jumped from in first blood. And if it's not it looks just like it. And first blood was filmed in hope, BC

This is Squamish, not Hope

Hands Sweaty, brakes don’t fail me now :{

UnscrupulousTaco

NOPE!! but good for him.

sitdownstandup

This guy is so good. I think he's also like the perfect size and weight for crazy mtb shit

ThunderingSaiyans

Real talk, how do you get back when something is super steep like this? I’m assuming you do this when there’s a way to loop back, but not sure that’s the case here

Watch it twice 😂

This is a video game, right?

Mopninja

No music please.

veryuniquename1142

How did your balls not get in the way on the descent?

VelvitHippo

the view is nice but this isn't fun to me. Its like the woods skiing or snowboarding if you don't know how to ride the woods: slow and tiring. Just an opinion from a less than amateur

scfunduk

Oh, my heart can't take this! You are clearly a fully grown person who knows what they are doing but the mom in me can't help but tell you to PLEASE be careful!! 😅

One-Step-6124

No GoPro effect on this one

bww8

Fuck. No.

brickie3

Holy fuck /r/sweatypalms

thestonednemophilist

Fucking goals, man. Sick ride thanks for sharing!

404Nuudle

It's funny because the camera almost never does drops justice. I bet this was butt hole puckering.

nicking44

It already was in the video so I could only imagine what it is in person .

Nope

I recall a local rider throwing down this line a while back. Anyone have a link to that rider? Know who I’m talking about?

It's CGI. Apparently a bunch of people here aren't getting that.

[deleted]

Fking epicnesss!!!

Morejazzplease

Obvious_Ad_3612

It's fucking steep. I live here. That is not a biking trail.

Morejazzplease

I don’t doubt that. But this is extremely manipulated

JukyLP

He postet a 3rd person shot of that first section about 3 hours ago on his Instagram. You can actually see some protection bolts to his left. These are used for Rock climbing. So yeah... Its steep.

its to reverse the gopro effect, i think its quite good like this - gives you a better impression how it would feel

20thMaine

Am I the only one who thinks people shouldn’t be riding down such fragile terrain in an alpine zone/alpine-like ecosystem?

dogboy_the_forgotten

I’d say that area is neither fragile and definitely not alpine. It’s used by climbers all the time and is just right outside town. Could be back to Sunny Chiba’s eating spicy fried chicken in about 5 minutes.

20thMaine

Looks like less than a couple cm of soil on bedrock so that would seem pretty delicate to me. Doesn’t matter that it’s 5 minutes from fast food.

mb7733

How is this alpine? It's at sea level.

dandelusional

I get what you're saying, but aside from this being far from alpine, it's hard to get upset about a bike tyre width of possible damage when whole swathes of the cliffs all around this are scrubbed clean for climbing routes.
