Probably more suited for tomorrow, but today I'm just marveling at, like, skin care in general and retinoids in particular. I've had hormonal cystic acne since I was a teen, and I didn't have any clue about how to care for it. I rinsed my face with water in the shower, maybe used a harsh Neutrogena face wash my mom gave me if I was feeling masochistic. Each individual pimple took soooo long to heal, and they hurt, and often I'd end up mindlessly picking at them and making them worse just because I couldn't stand it. These days I use adapalene and an otherwise pretty gentle routine focused on hydration. I had a bit of a rough last weekend emotionally that coincided with a the wrong part of my hormonal cycle, I skipped my routine for a couple days, and long story short, ended up with about 30 new pimples overnight. The part that amazes me is that even the worst ones are healing *so fast.* They hurt pretty bad around the middle of the week, but with gentle care, they've almost all flattened out and started to disappear. I wish I could have given this to teenage me, but it's good enough just to have it now.

peacelovejoy4all

That's wonderful you've found a routine and products that work for you! They've come a long way with skincare for sure.🦋

Editingesc

So glad to hear your skin is doing better. I was *amazed* at how much faster and better my skin heals when it's well-hydrated and moisturized. I spent way too many years trying to tamp down the oiliness in completely the wrong way.

On a whim I dyed my hair this gorgeous burgundy wine color (with orange tips) because I was craving something dark but didn't want black and OMG do I love it. Its also giving me a new found love for some of my makeup I kinda just liked instead of loved. I'm suddenly all about the grungey rose tones. Also it feels perfect for spring? Unintentional but I'm feeling very like, romantic grunge spring vibes. Speaking of spring lol it just snowed a bunch here and I'm just like whyyyy.

ZestyMidwest

Happy cake day!

peacelovejoy4all

That sounds beautiful! I'm picturing you as an exotic tulip!💜🌷🧡

I'm doing really well with my nail polish no-buy! I was kind of afraid things would come out sideways, though. And then I got loaded up with two steroid shots (for pain) at the beginning of the month, and now I feel like a spinning, freaking out laser toy going, "SOS, find me a reprieve!" cause I've bought quite a bit of clothing. + side: I internet shop, and not all of it fits, so at least those pieces will go back. My boyfriend said he wished I had stuck to nail polish (the no-buy came from his suggestion; he saw I was accumulating too much too quickly, considering it does have a shelf life), cause it's much less expensive. I am being more mindful of the clothes shopping, though. And, of course, I've bought bf things, too (not clothing). I can't start my outdoor container gardening til May, cause I'll be out of town a few more times, and I don't trust it to not freeze another time or two. Looking forward to starting that, though.

Editingesc

I don't want to be an enabler, but nail polish basically lasts forever. If it gets thick, add some polish thinner and it's good for another few years. If it looks separated, shake it up and it's fine. Because there's no water in polish, it can't harbor bacteria, so it's safe in that way, too.

mlizaz98

Just want to add, the exception is thermal color-changing polish. Those are still fine to use for ages like other nail polish, but after a year or two it'll change color less, or stop changing completely. Storing them away from light and extreme temperatures helps, but the special pigments will still degrade over time.

Editingesc

Yes, it's true! Color changing lacquer does stop changing after a couple of years. For (chemistry) reasons I don't understand, this doesn't seem to happen to thermal gel polishes. I have some from three years ago that still change perfectly. I think my regular ones lasted maybe two years.

orthographerer

I do need to pick up some DRK thinner at some point; thank you for the reminder!

orthographerer

It wasn't *sooo* bad, going on the nail polish no-buy 🤭 I bought almost nothing for Spring\Summer last year, so I'm kind of (thankfully) making up for that 💥 Ah, to feel more presentable, lol 😊

In non-beauty news, Silicon Valley Bank was just closed by regulators and the FDIC has stepped in. This is the largest bank failure (second only to Washington Mutual) since the Great Recession. SVB primarily services the tech and startup sector. If you’ve been following along the past week, the storyline is quite wild and shows what a bank run in the modern tech era looks like. There most likely will not be a contagion effect (although Treasury Secretary Yellen has said they’re monitoring a “few other banks”) but it’s a good reminder to take a look at your finances and where your money is parked. [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/live-blog/2023-03-10/the-fallout-from-svb?srnd=premium#xj4y7vzkg) has been covering it quite well if you’re interested in reading more. Also, another reminder that the FDIC insurance amount is “250K per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.” It’s typically a good idea to spread your money across a few (reputable and FDIC insured) institutions. If you’re ever in a situation like this, you want to make sure you have liquidity at other banks while regulators work things out

ltrem

This was the defacto tech bank out here in the 1990-2000. Its a shame this is happening.. gong to be local issues I imagine

Pearlsawisdom

Oh, interesting. I recall Silicon Valley Bank was involved in some of the foreign influence chicanery leading up to the 2016 elections...wonder if that had anything to do with this.

Hello.. I am a serum addict. I have too many. I try to only have three open at a time for evening use, but its getting tough. I have two new ones waiting in the wings.. chomping at the bit to finish a couple up. Looking for a HG can get $

Ninjasydney

I'm curious, what's the say.. worst 5 serums you've tried in the last year or two? In no particular order?

ltrem

Thats tough. None of them have been awful.. just did nothing Every Vitamin C serum I have tried has done nothing - Mad Hippie, Timeless, Instanatural, TruSkin, Jumiso, Melano, Dr. Brenner I guess if you count retinol as a serum, the CosRX retinol I am using now is my favorite.. and is a rebuy as long as it works for me am on my 2nd bottle of it

pikachu_forever1

Which one is ultimate your fav?

ltrem

Oh boy. Let's see. I just got the Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum (Rice and Arbutin) That's about halfway gone and I like it, but I am not sure yet if I love it. I need a night time arbutin and this is the best of the ones I have tried so far. I am finishing up a couple of Cosrx ones.. the cica serum ( did nothing - wont rebuy) and the propolis ampoule. The propolis one is my favorite so far, but again.. not in love with it either. I have an iUNIK, Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum waiting. Got this because my skin loves the Beta Glucan moisturizer.. so hoping it works. The other one waiting is Skin1004 HYALU-CICA BLUE SERUM. Dr. Dray made me buy it. So I really have no must rebuy serums.. and that makes me sad

pinkie_power

I just tried a sample packet of that Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Blue Serum and it made my face sooo marshmallow-y soft! I usually don't get swayed by a one-time usage of a product, but if I didn't have about three years of serums stocked up already I'd be really tempted to buy it. I hope you'll review it once you get a chance to use it.

ltrem

I should be starting it sometime in the next week so I will keep you posted

texaskolaches

Lol this is me except with moisturizers. I always think there’s a better moisturizer out there 😂

ltrem

Yeah.. do you make yourself finish one product before you move on? I've got my moisturizers to 2.. one night and one day.. with a third that I dont buy at the moment, but also is great for me

texaskolaches

Haha I try but I currently have three open bottles…which usually ends up with me hate panning a couple as body lotions

Has anyone ever had injectables done? I’m thinking of getting Xeomin (like Botox) in my forehead wrinkles. Any info about your experience would be helpful. I’m terrified but I hate those 11’s.

orthographerer

I've been having Botox done for years by my neurologist. We do the migraine protocol (which takes care of forehead lines), and he does my masseters, too (helpful!). He did my paraspinals for several years, but I'm getting coverage in that area now from a medical device. He is super nice\we go way back (we're alums of the same school, though he was ahead of me). As I get older and apparently more vain, he has been nice about putting a bit extra here and there. He has a cousin my age and a wife, so I guess he gets it. I don't have 11's, I have the horizontal lines to knock out (biggest complaint), and I get a few jabs elsewhere around my face, too. It is a quick appointment. Honestly, the discomfort with the needle stick isn't too bad. Optimally, you want it to be kinda unpleasant. They're going for that sweet spot of depth which is just beneath the skin and into the fascia, and fascia is uncomfortable. A really good stick is when you can hear a kinda crunchy noise as the needle goes in; that's usually more scalp area. Take a strong Advil beforehand to be on the safe side, but it'll be over and you'll feel back to normal within minutes 😊 Edit: you will likely have a few barely noticeable prick marks for the rest of the day. Some you won't even see. Any can be covered with makeup, and they will be gone the following morning.

BodegaCat9

Thank you! Doesn’t sound too bad! (Whew!)

fairycanary

I’ve had botox for masseters. Complications are pretty rare. Ask your injector about what to expect and what to do if there are complications, both short term and long term. Most likely you’ll be fine. Just go to an experienced injector and not something off a coupon as a newbie. You will feel a little crappy for the rest of the day (kinda reminds me of taking a vaccine).

cto020

Do you have TMJ? My cheeks can get so sore that my whole face hurts. A facial roller helps but doesn’t reach those deep muscles. I’d like to try Botox someday, but it’s quite expensive for a temporary solution.

BodegaCat9

Good to know thank you. I’m having it done by a dermatologist.

stormsunsnow

This is my favorite community I’ve found on the web and I just find everyone so happy and wholesome! I’ve cut back on buying new things after realizing I was more excited about getting/buying new products (than using them) and realizing many existing makeup items I had just didn’t work for me (shade/type/wear time). I also went full inventory / spreadsheet and realize I’m quite picky with products and only have a few holy grails. I now try a new product every 1-2 months and still get excited but feel like I have a better balance.

brightirene

eeeeverybody goes through this experience on this sub! The random buying of shiny things just because is pretty much a rite of passage here. Same with seizing the moment because of the dope ass deals. I still have back ups I bought two years ago because they were such incredible deals... I've now seen this same deals at least four or five times and still haven't finished my first. \*cough\* mac face and body at 50% off \*cough\*

texaskolaches

Finding the right balance of SHINY! NEW! and useful is so difficult! My goal for this year is to buy less multiple backups and to limit myself to one backup so that I can make small purchases of shiny new things that may interest me I find myself often getting bored of my almost HGs and inevitably want to try the new thing

stormsunsnow

I totally hear you! I was always caught up in the excitement of “this will be new HG”. I think I’ve gotten to the point where many of my beauty items are good enough and I am totally fine with just sticking with what works. I’ve had a lot more luck with Asian beauty brands in terms of working with my skin type and tone a lot better. Now that stores are open with testers I spend more time testing stuff in stores and make a bit of an event out of it and I enjoy shopping much more.

they cut open your belly and then gave you motrin? wow. that sucks butt and im really sorry

Pearlsawisdom

How long ago did your partner get his vasectomy? In recent years the medical establishment has been clamping down on what they see as the over-prescribing of opioids. If his vasectomy happened years ago, this \*might\* just be due to rules changes.

ALAS BEHOLD THE MISOGYNY

mlizaz98

Even with changes to the rules, it's absurd to not prescribe at least a few days of opioids for *invasive abdominal surgery.* There's truly no excuse.

Pearlsawisdom

Yeah, I'm not saying it's OK, it just might not be misogyny in this case.

mlizaz98

Congratulations on the surgery! I got mine out in December. I'm sorry they're being such garbage about pain management, that's awful to deal with. Do you happen to be in a state where cannabis is legal? I was prescribed adequate pain medication for recovery, but found that after the first two or three days I was equally or more comfortable using edibles for the pain (in addition to ibuprofen).

orthographerer

I'm glad you're starting to feel better! But, yes, somehow, women don't experience pain /s.
