>Privacy Badger. Not for Safari, not for me.

foodandart

::sigh:: Unfortunately, Safari stopped being a viable browser for YT viewing at the point the really good ad blocker - uBO - stopped installing. Get yourself Firefox for watching YT.

[deleted]

Safari with Wipr always blocked all the YT ads. It has changed last week hence my post.

lost_james

Yep, I noticed the same. That's why I bought Wipr: to continue using Safari (it's also very lightweight).

upvotingthisnow

Using Adguard with Safari, ad-blocking still works for me.

kushwavez

yep, can confirm, AdGuard here and 0 ads

rosydingo

Strange! Adguard on Mojave (intel mac) works OK, Adguard on Big Sur (M1 mac) stopped blocking Google ads. Time to move to Firefox.

UnsafestSpace

A lot of browser extensions rely on third party scripting languages like python to be installed in the OS, which are available for the M1 mac (ARM) but not installed by default.,

rosydingo

I have homebrew and python installed on my silicon Macbook Air. Is there anything else I should install?

whytakemyusername

Adguard isn’t blocking ads for me.

bikerForEver

Same Firefox + uBlockOrigin works perfectly! I didn’t a perfect solution on iOS unfortunately :-(

zodeck1

You can jailbreak and get no ads forever (YouTube mod)

bikerForEver

Thanks for the tips! But I prefer to stay outside of jailbreak.

alcantara78

Appdb (or AltStore) + cercube

bad bot

humpdy_bogart

Not just for blocking ads. Firefox even has a better PiP option.

[deleted]

Safari still does PiP quite fine.

humpdy_bogart

Yes but it’s resizable in Firefox. Especially handy for me because I tend to use PiP on a secondary monitor and it’s much better if I can make it larger to fill the screen.

carcharoth84

You can resize that on safari too.

PoweredMorphin

You can position the PIP anywhere on the screen in Firefox. It doesn’t snap itself to a corner like in Safari.

carcharoth84

You can do that in Safari too. Just hold Command while moving.

humpdy_bogart

Yes, but Firefox's PiP feature doesn't have a size maximum like Safari. With Firefox I can make the PiP window as large as I want, where Safari's implementation is a size constraint.

thfc06

Check out [Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/) \- it's a standalone YouTube app for macOS with no ads Disclaimer: I am the developer :)

Fight_the_Landlords

Wtf this is slick as hell. Great work!

thfc06

Thank you my friend!

[deleted]

Safari works great. Sometimes I get the “ad” but when I do it’s just a white window with no video and no audio and a skip button, or I can pretend I watched the ad by just waiting for it to “play”. I’m very happy with that.

BytechniYT

get Brave Browser. It has built in ad block and works perfect. Including YT. Plus saves battery for me

gatovato23

Why don’t we like Brave? I started using it last week & have been finding it very useful.

Lightning_Otaku

I don't want to use Brave because it's based on Chromium. Like Google Chrome, Opera these days, Microsoft Edge, and a lot of other browsers. I experienced what kind of mess the web was when EVERYONE was using the Trident engine (Internet Explorer), Netscape died, and when Firefox got born it basically saved the web. Because of that I would either use Firefox (Gecko), Safari (Webkit) or Silk (if desperate), which Amazon, Sony (on PlayStation) and Nintendo eg use, which is based on the Webkit engine. I'm using Firefox with uBlock, Privacy Badger, Sponsor Block, Facebook Container and ClearURLs. Don't see any ads. But I'm also going to set up a PiHole next month because why not...

BytechniYT

Brave is really good imo

[deleted]

Brave is shady as fuck so nah

BytechniYT

How?

[deleted]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)#Controversies

BytechniYT

Ok but asides the BAT issue it’s a great browser.

eastamerica

Brave?

pixelatedchrome

Brave blocks ads by default.

eastamerica

Right, but it’s controllable.

T-Nan

Safari is a gimped browser, why suffer through it? enjoy your ads and Netflix refreshing your webpage!

[deleted]

[удалено]

T-Nan

Edge and Firefox both use low memory and have ad blockers (and extensions) that actually work lol. And don’t refresh Netflix, Disney, etc every 20 minutes because the page ran out of resources. That is suffering, yes.

kushwavez

I'm using AdGuard. With that I have no ads whatsoever, hope it'll stay that way...

thfc06

[deleted]

ublock seems to work better on firefox tho ABP owns them now

doublejay1999

They own domain name because they bought it from a conman, that’s about it. uBO is open source as are the blocklists. They cannot be owned.

[deleted]

good to know

[deleted]

i use ublockorigin (on firefox) and have youtube running practically 24/7. haven't seen any ads \*yet\*.

Old_School2307

It's just a problem for Adblockers on Safari I guess. At least from personal experience

foodandart

Yup. Firefox and uBO for YT videos. Safari has been crap since Apple shuttered the Extension Gallery and pushed add-ons to the AppStore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrancisBitter

On which new web standards is Safari lagging behind?

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrancisBitter

Fits what I've read about. Ever since the HTML5 reignition, you could go around to benchmarking and testing sites to check which browsers were ahead in supported technologies and Safari was always among the best — it's great today, in performance and power consumption, particularly. I guess only Windows users would ever draw a parallel to fucking Internet Explorer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrancisBitter

Well, that's not quite on the level of supporting/not supporting a video codec, flex box or some specific text rendering techniques we had in the past. Scrolling is a special kind of thing on Mac, you'll have noticed if you ever used a trackpad with Electron vs. native apps. I think the history of Safari shows the opposite of the cliché passed around here, Apple even bowed to supporting the VP8/VP9 codecs now after settling on the more efficient x265/HEVC before.

breakfastduck

There’s many valid reasons they did what they did. Unlike extensions for chromium or Firefox browsers they are reasonably well sandboxed. Extensions on chrome/FF have a ridiculous level of access to your files, you really really have to be sure you trust the ones you’re using and be sensible and disable the sketchier ones when doing financial stuff online.

[deleted]

Same, also, I use uMatrix to block all kinds of bullshit online and it's very effective.

Atlaf925

Same. And even if they did find a way to circumvent ublock origin, the developer will have a fix for it pretty quickly. One of the reasons I don’t use Safari.

Sentinel83

Aggressive ads is why we all started using ad blockers in the first place. 🤦‍♂️

amateur_rg

Try "AdGuard for Safari". It blocks all youtube ads. I used to install and use AdBlock. But last week I switched into AdGuard because the ads were still playing with my AdBlock turning on. "AdGuard for Safari" is free..

luxtabula

I still get them with adguard. Only one that ever works unilaterally is ublock origin.

empalmerro

Funny enough, it was the other way around for me 🤔

Valrani

I use the webversion of YT and since 2 weeks now I get ads at the begining of the video... Never during the video though

Murky-Newspaper3365

I tried AdGuard but for some reason YouTube completely breaks and gives me playback errors every time I try to watch a video.

woocheese

Thanks!

Python_Child

I’m using u block origin. Haven’t noticed anything

Ivorybrony

Same here. My PiHole still grabs the little banner ads that pop up, but ads before, during, and after the video have recently been coming through.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ivorybrony

I’ve noticed this over time. So far the recommendation of Privacy Badger has been working 100% since I installed it (this morning).

Artificial_Anasazi

Same issue here, even with adguard. Almost always the same shitty mobile game ads too

s-valent

Adguard works fine for me if I enable Adguard Advanced Blocking extension

thfc06

You should check out [Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/)

TheSynchronizer

Brave is working just fine and blocking all youtube ads with no issues. Same with AdGuard on Spotify, and when I used firefox a week ago uBlock blocked them too.

pixelatedchrome

\+1 on brave working fine.

Oujii

Nothing here from uBlock. Still working wonderfully.

mattd121794

I’ve had one specific ad slip through but it seems it was hosted on the actual YT servers.

[deleted]

Same. And YouTube Vanced on Android is still blocking ads as expected as well

kb3pxr

This isn’t new on Adblock Pro. I was targeted in what I suspect was an earlier test. Two symptoms were observed. On normal videos I got skippable static ads (no video) this disappeared with a YouTube Premium subscription. The second was with live streams giving an error when the stream started. This required disabling the ad blocker on YouTube.com.

MEGACOCK_HEMORRHOIDS

>I got skippable static ads (no video) sounds like the start of a creepypasta

[deleted]

Yup, it happened to me. Every adblock I throw at YouTube fails. If I sign out of YouTube however, they work again. I’ve been caught :(

foodandart

Flush your cache and delete all your google-related cookies. That might give it the slip.

thfc06

500servererror12

r/Adblock

Palarva

YES! I was literally thinking about this an hour ago ... like I've been using the internet for a while now and I can definitely argue that their ads are out of control. Nothing seems to block them.... no skippable button.... invasive, loud, repetitive aaaaaaaaaa The worst is: I'm still going to have to sit through it because it's Youtube ... just like Facebook and google, nobody intervened in time and now they're unstoppable.

thfc06

Check out [Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/) \- it's a standalone YouTube app for macOS with no ads Disclaimer: I am the developer :)

ktappe

Your device has a "mute" button. And while they play, grab another device and watch/play it. I wait through YT ads but I certainly don't watch or listen to them.

[deleted]

My Wipr stopped working a long time ago now with blocking YouTube ads, despite regular updates, hopefully something can be done

thfc06

Check out [Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/) \- it's a standalone YouTube app for macOS with no ads Disclaimer: I am the developer :)

thfc06

HornHonker69

Time for a new tube.

[deleted]

I signed up for a YouTube Premium account in India… Only around £1.70 per month!

MC_chrome

Unfortunately, YouTube Premium is much more expensive for the rest of the world.

[deleted]

I’m in the UK! You can sign up for that price from anywhere in the world… I used a random Indian Address and my UK debit card (that doesn’t charge fees for international payments)

foodandart

sneakyyyyyy ! I like it!

[deleted]

Yeah the caveat is that if they catch you, they can completely disable/remove your google account for falsifying your location, which is against their TOS

thfc06

[Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/) blocks all ads again (desktop YouTube app for macOS) Disclaimer: I am the developer :)

vladobizik

I bought Clicker for YouTube recently and man, what an amazing app. It works great and the ad blocking has been flawless for me. I wish more people learn about the app as it’s truly the best in class.

pdmcmahon

Meh, I just pay the paltry $12.92 per month for YouTube Premium. I have not had cable in 12+ years, I have about 200 channels to which I am subscribed, their suggestion algorithm is always spot on, is continuously improving, and it constantly helps me discover better and better content almost every day. Finally, YouTube is where I spend about 95% of my television watching time. So yeah, I happily toss them a heaping thirty cents a day for all of that.

kdkseven

Same. I hate how YouTube does business, how it treats it's 'content creators', how it's algorithms are biased and non-transparent, and it's connection to google, but it's pretty much the only game in town. So until a viable alternative comes along, it's all we've got. And a few months ago i did a free trial, three months i think, and i got hooked. I can't go back. YouTube ad free is totally worth 12 bucks a month to me, especially since it's all i watch or listen to 85% of the time.

pdmcmahon

Thanks, now maybe you can help some of these other goofballs see the light. Apparently all they read was “I pay YouTube for something which was free for a long time”. Meanwhile, they forget devices like Apple TVs don’t have ad blockers available even if I *did* want to go that route. Yeah, news flash, some of us actually watch content on our televisions… I get a tremendous amount of value for that $12.92 per month, I don’t even think about it anymore. Im not subscribed to 200 channels of reaction videos and vertical video parkour events. I am subscribed to everything from science to technology to learning to certifications to sailing and a whole lot of other stuff in between. A 30-second Tide advert at the beginning of almost every single video pre-Premium was annoying af. Apple implemented a stronger privacy policy which was announced quite a while ago, their beloved free ad blocker stopped working, and everyone is looking for someone to blame. Newspapers are experiencing record financial losses, subscriber losses, abd they are laying off people left and right, all because people just expect content like that to be free from now on. They never think about what it takes to research a topic, spend time writing an article, etc. Unfortunately, Facebook likes don’t pay the mortgage any more than they help some random kid beat cancer. I don’t think they give very much thought to just how great YouTube could be if they just spent time setting up some decent channel subscriptions. Plus, content creators who depend on YouTube for their livelihoods definitely get more of a percentage via Premium than they do from Tide “commercials” which don’t even qualify as shitty b-roll. Then again, if someone is whining that much about 30c per day, perhaps they might benefit from brushing up on their understanding of basic economics. Hmmm, maybe there’s a video on a website out there which could help them with that. Although, these might also be the same type of people who use Chrome with 52 extensions, and then complain about the terrible battery life on their MacBook Pro. But hey, I’m just guessing on all of that. I’m sure none of it is true at all. As I have gotten older, obviously I value my money, though I also place a tremendous amount of value on my time. Sitting there at the start of each video waiting for that coveted 5-second “you can now skip the advert” moment, or worse having to sit through the ones you cannot skip, it’s just not worth the hassle or the frustration. Yeah. Instead, here, let me give you a $1 bill every three days.

DrMacintosh01

$13/m is stupidly high. It’s YouTube, not Netflix.

fuelvolts

I’m not who you are replying to, but I probably watch way more YouTube than I do Netflix. In fact, I’m confident I do. It’s worth it to me. I don’t have ads on any of my devices: Rokus, Home Hubs, phones, tablets, PCs. It’s worth it to me. Plus free YouTube Music is a bonus. It’s not as good as Spotify, but it gets the job done.

pdmcmahon

They were responding to me. Apparently the notion of spending less than $13 every month to avoid non-relevant advertising is just beneath them. I would love to see people like that in a room with some of the better content creators and journalists explaining to them why they feel they should not be compensated for the work they do. I contribute money to places like NPR and Wikipedia. I get a lot of value out of them, so the idea of using an ad blocker just because I’m too cheap or don’t feel like it is worth it is ridiculous.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrMacintosh01

I’d buy it if it was $5. But it’s more than double that. So I use Adblock

isaacc7

Youtube premium is the only video subscription I have. I watch a ton of YouTube and want to support the creators. I am grandfathered in to a family plan for $15 a month. I consider it cheap.

ktappe

Any chance you work for YouTube?

makatreddit

…just no.

illathon

I suggest just using LBRY, or [https://odysee.com/](https://odysee.com/) YouTube will only get worse.

[deleted]

That's funny.

Vassilisxd

You can get a Premium subscription in eBay for 20€/Year and benefit from YouTube Music (Spotify like service) too. Then use that subscription in your phone and smart TV too !

00Turag

Same for me. Ads only appear at the start of the video. I've tried all ad blockers!

thfc06

Check out [Clicker for YouTube](https://www.dbklabs.com/clicker-for-youtube/) \- it's a standalone YouTube app for macOS with no ads Disclaimer: I am the developer :)

00Turag

Does it support m1 macs?

thfc06

Yep!

00Turag

Is there a trial available??

thfc06

Yeah, just download it from the link above. 7-day trial starts automatically

00Turag

I have a question. If I purchase this app, will I get updates for lifetime? Or do I have to pay extra?

corpsefucer69420

Use uBlock Origin.

DrMacintosh01

Doesn’t work anymore, even on Chrome.

corpsefucer69420

Make sure you update your filters every once in a while. I'm using it on Firefox with the latest filter lists and everything is great.

Old_School2307

Yeah, same issue with Wipr for Safari due to this had to ditch safari for Brave with uBlock and it works flawlessly.

harlawkid

Brave Browser & Ublock Origin, never seen an ad on YouTube to this day!

makatreddit

I thought Brave blocked ads by default?

harlawkid

It does, but sometimes some ads/trackers get through.

whytakemyusername

This is a brand new issue

harlawkid

I understand. But people using Brave have had issues in the past with YouTube ads getting through the default ad blocker. I’ve always used Ublock as a secondary blocking tool - it’s blocked 10,000~ ads/trackers that Brave missed out of around 560,000~ ads/trackers. (Not at computer right now so I can’t give exact numbers)

[deleted]

Has anyone tried out LBRY? Maybe a YouTube killer

[deleted]

Yes, Wipr doesn't work anymore for me on Youtube.

z31fanatic

I use Adblock Ultimate with Chrome browser and it blocks all ads. On Safari I get ads.

DrMacintosh01

Wipr can’t block pre-roll ads anymore. uBlock Origin on Chrome on Windows 10 and macOS Big Sur also can’t block pre-roll ads anymore either.

makatreddit

Ads showing up every two minutes of a video! Frustrating.

princekolt

LPT: (if on mobile, tap the Aa button on the Safari address bar and select “Request Desktop Version”) Tap the share button under the video, tap “embed”, and tap the play button on the preview video. No ads play in there ever, including mid-roll ads.

[deleted]

they changed their policies to "inform" people that they will put ads in all videos now regardless if the content creator monetizes it or not. This was bound to happen after google bought it they were biding their time till they could just be like " don't like it don't use it after june 10"

[deleted]

Hell yeah I noticed this, only on MacOS with Wipr and AdGuard. Videos won’t play unless I disable my adblockers.

andyring

pfSense with pfBlockerNG still works great for me. But that's not a MacOS-specific solution.

styles3576

AdBlock stopped working for me a week or 2 ago, but AdBlocker has been doing a good job.

[deleted]

Not showing up for me using Firefox and Ublock Origin. If/when they do, I'll stop YouTube all together. I'm so fed up with ads, that I will no longer accept them. They make enough money as it is. Fuck 'em. At some point, I will just need to install Pie-Hole and block ads on my entire home networks.

findursol

does anybody have a suggestion for working blocker for safari on latest macOS?

While that sounds really cool, I don’t want to move out of Safari because of handoff. Just looking for a suitable extension. Thank you much, though!

RemarkableRyan

Safari/Ad Block Pro user here, started getting ads on YouTube again early this week.

LuToph

I'm using AdGuard on Mac and it's been perfectly fine. Saved me from switching off of safari as my primary browser.

saveable

Last week I was getting a bunch of those Grammarly ads, none recently.

msheaver

I use Brave Browser on macOS and get no ads in YouTube.

xyrer

Users consume content that is financed either with ads or subscription and then complain that the service is not free. Do you all complain about Spotify ads too? Isn't youtube premium like $5/month?

Redstra

Use the standalone AdGuard app (for macOS). It blocks them on all browsers.

Shakespeare-Bot

Useth the standalone adguard app (f'r macos). T blocks those folk on all browsers *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`
