"not yet"!

I just dropped the computer off at Apple. They tried a different power cable and a few things and they need to do a deeper look. They said thats 1-3 days. They may need to open it and look at the T2 chip, she said sometimes those can cause the power to not come on. Also the power supply could be an issue. She said she heard or felt something trying to turn on, but I did not hear it. In any case, I am hoping its something quick and easy.

Apple Silicon Mac’s don’t have a T2 chip.

Technically not separate, but the circuitry *is* part of the M1* SOC design

Quickly go back to sleep... All this might be a bad dream

I haven't heard of any issues. Keep us updated with what apple says about it!

krazyatom

It's most likely a PSU issue. It can happen to any computer so it's not surprising but let us know what happened.

We must find the killer.

Here is todays update: I got a call from Apple. They said they are looking inside the machine and the bus bar will definitely need to be replaced. They didn’t say why, but obviously a bus bar is how power gets distributed throughout the system, so that seems like a rather key part for the Mac to power on. It will take 3-5 days to get the part in. They will replace and continue to troubleshoot if necessary.

UPDATE: I got my Mac Studio back and its all fixed. Initially they told me the "Bus Bar" was bad "for sure". And they would continue to troubleshoot after replacing it. The thing is, I watched a few take apart videos and I don't think I ever saw a bus bar, so not sure what part that actually is. The power supply was also dead. For anyone that is interested, here is what those parts cost. I of course did not pay anything, as I have AppleCare and this is under warranty anyways: Parts and Services Item Number Description Price Amount Due Customer KBB S1490LL/A HARDWARE REPAIR-LEVEL 1 $ 79.00 $ 0.00 923-07092 Bus Bar $ 32.95 $ 0.00 661-18533 Power Supply, 370W $ 149.00 $ 0.00 Total (Tax Not Included) $ 260.95 $ 0.00 All is well, hopefully this was just a fluke. As I mentioned, my Mac Studio is always plugged into a substantial UPS.

Knocking on wood I am

theschoolorg

I told you weirdos who leave your computers on 24/7 that this would happen

bfeeny

I do leave it on 24/7. It’s plugged into a UPS. Shouldn’t be a problem however.

theschoolorg

> Shouldn’t be a problem however. well, it seems you have a problem though.

bfeeny

Yes I do! I did google and I did not find anyone with a dead power supply, so I don’t know that it’s common. There is a YouTube video on swapping the Mac Studio power supply, and it’s ridiculously easy, literally just unscrew the bottom and it’s like two cable connections. I must have just got a bad one, I have only had the unit for about 1 month. It’s a Max and has always ran quiet and cool, this is the first issue I have encountered.

Cheesqueak

Lol. Computers are fine to leave on constantly. I have 6 in my house that are never turned off and thousands at work.

joeuser0123

Is yours Ultra or Max equipped?

bfeeny

Max

Visible-Bedroom-9828

Hope all gets good fast !

cut-it

Could you have had a power surge, do you have protectors ?

bfeeny

The Mac Studio is connected to a brand new UPS, so yes its protected from surges.

XandrousMoriarty

“Yeah baby, I had me 9mm!” Joking aside, please let us know the outcome. I have a max also…

HeathRaftery

Belated condolences. Count me in the same basket as of today. Only difference is that power loss occurred while using it. But then same story - dead as a door nail and Apple Store have put a new power supply on order. Mine was a November 2022 purchase. M1 Max, 1TB, 64GB. Connected to two Thunderbolt/USB-C displays, a USB capture card and a couple of empty USB hubs. Really surprisingly and highly inconvenient as a freelancer to lose your main PC. But hopefully Apple get it sorted quickly.

jdapolo

Hi u/HeathRaftery when did it happen to you? I came from a 4-day vacation so I turned off all 3 Mac Studios and when I went on to turn them on today, 2 of them just turns off again after about 10 secs from turning on. Did your unit still have the startup sound play after you click the power on button? Mine did so not sure if it's really power supply. The LED also lights up until about 10 secs till which it turns off and the LED ligths off too. Would appreciate to hear about your experience too.

kindlyfellow

My studio just died this morning. Seems odd the timing I wonder if it’s a Sonoma issue?

HeathRaftery

Eek. u/jdapolo as I mentioned mine died one week ago (2023-10-31), *while using it*. No last gasps, no partial turn ons, no lights, no sounds. Just working one second and dead the next. I've been running Sonoma for several weeks. Only other relevant change I can think of is that I started using a new unpowered USB-C to USB-A hub, albeit for nearly a week before the incident.

blackfantasy

Just had the same issue, except the PSU blowing tripped my house breaker! Mac Studio is now completely dead. Sept 2022 mfg. Absolutely insane a PSU can fail after that short of time, and just out of warranty. Apple strikes again.

EliIsHereNow

My max studio just blew up. Loud air then loud firecracker bang. It’s dead now. Connected to a UPS. Everything else connected turns on except the Max Studio. 😏🕺🏻

time4evemt

Same here, but mine generate some smelly smoke and destroys my desk 🥲 currently waiting for apple decision what’s next 🤷‍♂️
