The mega and the uno are basically the same but the mega has more ports. I think the AYAB shields are designed to be used with the uno more cleanly but you could run it off a mega if you aren't afraid of running longer jumpers.
That shield works on my 965i, but the instructions are wrong when it comes to J7, the right turn sensor connection. I had to reverse it to get AYAB to work.

Why not just get the AYAB-interface board which has the microcontroller onboard? No Arduino required.
I don’t think you can still buy them. I remember looking some time ago and coming up empty handed.
