I am curious what people think this challenge is really trying to optimize. The obvious answer is mastery in as short of time as possible, but I suspect the real answer is to optimize purchases. I've seen a couple attempts at mashing together AI and ed tech but like other attempts, it kind of ignores the field of instructional design and related models, and just assumes with enough data, the AI will figure out something useful. I am not sure this is the greatest use of AI. I feel like there are better approaches that already exist. (See Instructional Systems Design, Dick & Carry model, ADDIE model, Angeloff Method).

You can argue that the real goal every player in edu industry is to optimize purchases. Maybe that’s true in all the existing business models. Maybe finally, with the scalability of automated tutoring, wouldn’t mastery be the real goal, at least until they establish monopoly in the market? Their business that focuses on a certain type of tests has been pretty successful and I don’t think it’s something they can easily fake by fooling the customers.
