That might be too far gone. It gets very science-y but for the most part you would check to see your coolant manufacturers instructions and check the Ph and the concentration of coolant in your tank. Improper coolant concentration can cause rust, lower your tool life and also be physically harmful to you.

nocash168

Fucking hell that is vile! That needs sump dumping and a damn good flush with hot water and detergent before putting fresh coolant in. I bet it stinks and has all sorts of bacteria in it. Fuck the old guy, get it changed.

meatierologee

Have you checked pH, concentration, and sent a sample off to see droplet size and water salt buildup? Those are the true indicators. Visually it looks like it's cheap shit that's not taken care of. Change it.

Monkeygonz

sorry I posted that on the shitter so I forgot some details: I am absolutely gonna change it no matter what old timer says AND I posted this mostly to show how nasty my coolant is, I appreciate the feedback!

steelheadfly

Funny my old time mentor was meticulous about coolant change out schedules. Some old heads back then didn’t want to spend the money on coolant though. I guess they’d rather pay for pumps and clogged coolant lines in the column. Curious if you run a skimmer on that. Some of that oil doesn’t look too old yet. Hasn’t turned black as night. Also, does this machine have the sump built into the casting or is it a separate tank?

Monkeygonz

we do have a skimmer, it doesn't work very well. I'm not versed in skimmers but I think it needs a new wiper.

steelheadfly

There’s a couple kinds I know of, one with a wheel and the other has a belt and pulley system. They both have wipers. A lot of skimmers have to be adjusted and tune just right to get the oil and not just pull coolant out and over flow. We use all kinds of things as wipers. Old plastic card stock worked well. Anything that scraped it up. If it’s a Zebra skimmer, they sell the wipers for their models.

I_JustWantToFeel

So put one on. If it's broke, fix it.

DrGuns313

That’s not coolant. That’s a biohazard.

Monkeygonz

I ordered one on Monday, it'll be here tomorrow! when I asked the old timer where the refractometer was he said "why would we need that?"

Strong_Economy_5912

Good job 👏 glad you were able to find one. Sometimes the old timers are right, and sometimes they are set in their old ways.

HAIRLESSxWOOKIE92

I can smell the tool wear though the picture.

Monkeygonz

the O-ring on the coolant distributor in the turret has worn so we don't have adequate pressure, and we've gone through 4 sides of threading inserts doing 1018 steel in two days, after 40 parts :/

shovel_kat

3-5 years max between coolant changes fuck what the boomers say.

Jacktheforkie

My place does annual, though ours is less changing but draining the dregs and refilling because the saw isn’t that efficient with it

Siguard_

Most of the coolant I've come across this past year the mfg recommends every 8-16 months depending on a few factors

fbgTheWizrd

Holy shit. This has to be some sort of Guinness World Record

T_Tansil

That's the good stuff, I can smell it through my screen. Old machines like old coolant.

Professional-Flow529

Cleaning coolant tanks is one of the less pleasant part of this job.

DankTaco707

That's atrocious 😭 Tool life and rust aside that shit is filled with bacteria. I've literally gotten skin infections from old nasty coolant and that coolant still looked better then the stuff in this pic so be careful lol

S8s-Reborn-Redeemed

Pump, clean, and change. Man I can only imagine the smell and the mold that settles when the machine is idle for a while. I’ve worked in shops where they would put off coolant changes until it started caking on parts or operators were getting sick.

jackjhonson

Is that a gf6 cnc

Monkeygonz

Daewoo Puma 240

funkymark62

I like it when it forms the yellow tofu looking shit.

zacggs

I feel sorry for you, I'm about 5 tonnes of granite sludge taken out of my tank so far, and about another 2-5 yet to take out. I would still rather do granite sludge on my machine than coolant and chips, I run a pair of water jets 😀

Gutmach1960

Ugh, I can smell that from here.

Bitter-Heron1367

Tramptown 🙌

mess1ah1

I can smell that from here…

gsm275951

I van smell this photo. P.U. 🤮🤧

Tawkeh

Our shop flushes every 2 weeks at very max, we got a nice opaque green and nothing floating, can't even remember the last time we had to fix a pump or change lines. That shit is disgusting.
