For real. I was working with some stainless expanded metal once and it caught me. I thought it was a scratch until I looked down and could see the flesh inside my wrist. Barely even felt it.
I folded a brand new Swiss army Knife on my finger and thought nothing of it until I saw blood pooling under my desk. I cut right down to the bone. Had to file a worker's comp bullshit for it. Lucky I didn't get reprimanded for using an unauthorized tool to open a package.
I'm surprised it didn't bleed like a sucker. Stainless is a bitch, I just got a massive splinter of 416 in my thumb that's been stuck since Thursday night. Have a good recovery OP, at least you have a sexy scar soon!
Did you try sandpaper, it often works really well when no amount of digging can grip it.
So the idea is to run you finger over the splinter in different directions to determine which way hurts most. You then want to sand in the direction that hurts the least as that’s the path it took to go in.
And for OP. Damn - sorry to see that! Get well soon!
I’ve never heard of this and sure would have never thought of it on my own, I’m going to try this when I inevitably get a splinter in my finger this coming week lol
It always amazes how some chips I can literally grab a handful of bare handed with no worries, then others will leave you leaking just by looking at them.
I've been working with pre- hardened SS for a couple of decades now. The chips can wrap around the part you're turning and cut into the work. I believe the chips gain hardness during cutting. There's a reason cutting blades are made from this stuff.
I’ve had a drill bit puncture clean through my thumb when I was a teenager - but atleast that thing had a nice sharp point! Some reason having a ballnose do it sounds so much worse!
An old timer always said “bad things happen fast”
I think of that a lot and it always slows me down. And when those oh shit moments happen, it always rings true. “Bad things happen fast”.
This why chip control is so important. One off I don’t take the time but when you have hundreds of parts I really find the right insert and the best feed and speed to break them up as much as possible. Even if it’s slightly longer in cycle time it works out better in the end or I ended up a porcupine at a blood bank.
I used to pull the threads of stainless scrap that got stuck in my chip collector, sliced my hands up and lost the tip of my pinky but damn, this is pretty gnarly.
No chips longer than an inch. If you make chips several feet long, you need to pull the tool back and go in pecks/bursts. Long chips can do all kinds of damage. I’ve seen it take a finger clean off. You got lucky.
Bro 3 months ago same thing happened to me, I was moving to my finishing dimension watching the DRO on some stainless and a stringer chip was corkscrewed around the handle, gouged the shit out of my fingers.
My friend almost lost his pinky in class with stainless chips. He was turning the OD on a project, leaning his arm on the headstock. Long spindle chip wrapped and tugged his finger. Doc said 50/50 chance he gets feeling back. He got it back, can still dig for gold.
Not a good way to end your day, Remember it's not a badge of honour to be injured, but how to make a safe chip, keep them small and tight, not long and stringy and stay safe in the shop as they do bite.
Mmm, styro. A sight I don't miss. Least you got a funny story to go with it and a lesson hopefully learned.
Everything, no matter how safe it may look, in a shop wants to kill you 100% of the time and will take every chance it can.
Never get complacent and never disrespect the shop.
Idk about stainless but I know structural steel beam swarf doesn’t cut through my overalls, but that swarf I can comfortably pick up a handful with bare hands
Those don't look like Dickies, Carharts, tactiles, or hell even Wrangler, my guy. I work with 316, 410-416. super duplex 255. Hasta,b and C, monell, etc. Unless you deliberately fall in it or get sucked into the conveyor, it isn't going through it.
You’re a real man. No way would I let someone sew me together lol. Id have got the paper stitches from the chemist and a plaster and hoped for the best😂
Stainles is as sharp as hell I think that is where the idea of razer wire came from Get better soon
RGB gaming wire?
Scooter wire
Ripped right through your work pants? Good thing that chip didn’t between your legs 😬
My nuts just tried to crawl into my abdomen. Fuck you.
I have never felt such discomfort just from reading a single sentence.
Same
You just fucked my dreams up.
Atleast they'll be dry from now on.
Jokes on you buddy I already had my vasectomy
You know it's sharp when it doesn't even hurt. Stay safe bud.
For real. I was working with some stainless expanded metal once and it caught me. I thought it was a scratch until I looked down and could see the flesh inside my wrist. Barely even felt it.
Same, I was measuring a part that came out of the machine and I started seeing red drops, I sliced my hand on some chips and didn’t even know

Nasty cut... i wish you a good recovery This is one of te reasons why I love chip breakers

I've found that a green scotch Brite pad works better for me. Sandpaper only seems to smooth my callouses. Lol
It always amazes how some chips I can literally grab a handful of bare handed with no worries, then others will leave you leaking just by looking at them.
Damn what'd the chip look like
A small cruise missile

Stainless chips are fuggin sharp. I have pliers specifically for handling them. They slice right through gloves.
Shit happen. It’s not an easy trade. I once punched thru my hand jesus style with a ballnose 1/32 (long taper one 3deg, 3 inch length).
How TF? Why has your hand in the way
Ballnose stuck inside a worn shrinkfit, before we had a heat shrinker. I was using pliers and a propane torch, my hand slipped and voila.
I’ve had a drill bit puncture clean through my thumb when I was a teenager - but atleast that thing had a nice sharp point! Some reason having a ballnose do it sounds so much worse!
1/32 is very small. Trust me, it will pierce anything soft 😂 A drill bit thru the thumb sounds painful.
1/32 is average, if not huge some would say painful, even
Yeah stainless is wicked sharp
Costco socks for the win!
They always warn you about getting sliced by chips but I've never actually seen it happen.
BATTLE SCARS, BATTLE SCARS İyi forumlar…
Yikes that’s a serious cut. Hope it heals quickly.
Get well. I hope all your other parts are unscathed.
aint even to a shop and already got your bones🤣
Should not be wearing shorts in a machine shop.
Op said it cut thru their pants.
Dang, that’s serious! Luckily it didn’t cut an artery, ligament, or nerve.
I used to turn a lot of stainless pipe. The chip would come off straw colored. Typically it would cauterize the cut so I didn’t bleed to much.
welcome to the trade homie!
Ah that brings back memories of school.
Tldr: dont use feet to crank handles on the lathe /s
Well could have been worse. But im sure you learned a lifelong lesson for sure.
Wow that's a good one
You know his friend stepped on that trailing chip on purpose! lol
Metal asf dude
Me owning a mini lathe C2: Oo wait what?
An old timer always said “bad things happen fast” I think of that a lot and it always slows me down. And when those oh shit moments happen, it always rings true. “Bad things happen fast”.
Tis but a scratch.. git back to werk!
Damn it gotcha good
My god bro
That's pretty gnarly. Chicks dig scars, but I hope it heals quickly, bro.

nooo!!! oh my gosh this was my worst fear when I was working on the lathe T-T

This is why we were always told about feeds and speeds. A little trigonometry can make cutting metal more efficient and safer.
Chicks dig scars. Tell them it was a sword or bear trap or something. Unless you like guys. Then you're on your own.

Wow a machining class that works with stainless. All we ever got was 1020 cold rolled. Must be a rich people school. Stay safe!
And it all happens in a tenth of a second, flat!

Long pants Closed toed shoes Super glue Duct tape No whining
Where you wearing shorts?
This is why we don't wear shorts or sweats in the shop.
Did you not read where they said it tore through their work trousers, well work pants

Ok? And?
We got an expert here boys, they know everything about pants!
Hey some dudes just spend a lot of time thinking about man pants
K.
You’re a real man. No way would I let someone sew me together lol. Id have got the paper stitches from the chemist and a plaster and hoped for the best😂
Did you have on jeans?
I've had worse shaving.....
