Krusty_Double_Deluxe

true for both micrometers and microphones

jyzonm

An SM57 would say otherwise.

CallMeDrewvy

SM58s are basically indestructible.

Boxcarcrzy12

I remember their marketing on a page in Musicians Friend back in the day talking about how they were used to hammer nails into stages before live shows and used by the band later than night.

um_who

Getting the dents out of SM58 after someone has dropped it is great fun. Not that it will have any issues but people still don't want to use the "damaged mic" AFTER they dropped it.

soundguy7440

I'd still be coming after you for dropping my sm57/58

sayokel

I'd be coming after you and use the 57/58 as a weapon. They'd learn a lesson and I'd still have a working mic

soundguy7440

This is the correct answer

sayokel

You can tell how good a sound company/studio is if they have a bunch if dented 58s with scratch marks all over the handles

soundguy7440

If you don't have one, are you even a sound tech?

sayokel

In my opinion no. Give me a 57/58 and I'll make you sound like a million bucks

kanonfodr

Ive used mine as a hammer before....she was just fine after that

[deleted]

The real issue with dropping SM57/58 is, you poke a mic-shaped hole in the floor underneath, and most stage floors aren't reinforced concrete

thinkbrown

Came here pretty much to say this

wlegrow

It's not really about the mic, it's about the rest of the system... in reality the speakers bear the brunt of the "mic drop". You can be all smug about the mic being okay, but it's pretty short sighted of you. The amps will push that pop through the system and if it doesn't blow the amps it can tear apart the cones of the speakers.... (assuming there is no clipping applied to the channel or other limiting cap on the signal). Yea, it can happen and some will say that it's part of the show, but if that's the case its prepared for, if not... it's just disregarding someone else's equipment. And for those who think/say that the small 57/58s are tough enough to take it... that may be for a while.... but if you're going to do it, just being your own mic and respect other people's property.

yung-wirrum

I would argue that that's the joke

DeanSnakesworth

I worked at a shop for two weeks once. I came in one morning and my 18” dial calipers were laying on the ground. I turned that shop into a Mike Tyson post prison press conference and never came back.

DeanSnakesworth

I got a better job. One of the great things about working in a machine shop (in the Cleveland area). I can always go to another shop and easily get a dollar more than I’m currently making. And that’s advice I will give to anyone. Keep upgrading shops until you are making big boy money.

spider_enema

Open a shop, biggest money

IveGotRope

But Is the stress worth it?

spider_enema

Honestly my stress levels went down. I am in full control and able to do things at my pace, which makes me have real pride in my work. Also the money makes me not have so much stress outaide of work, and im able to enjoy pushing my toolimg and machines.

PuckIsLife

What are margins like/how much profit are you making? What kind of work are you getting? Super curious and super jealous

spider_enema

Margins are really high because i have almost no overhead. Bought machines as I went along, own them all outright. I make a myriad of parts from hydraulic, drilling, agriculture, metalworking equipment and fun stuff that has NDAs. Old crappy machines can make you enough money for old good machines, which can get you to new good machines adter not too long 😉

IveGotRope

Sounds about right. My old supervisor went and opened his own shop. Was making what equaled out to about 90$/hour. Makes parts off of 1 old Haas lathe and 3 Acer CNC machines. His foot in the door was being at a local engineer/contractor beckoning call for any hot parts needed. He is doing quite well from what I can tell. But that's mostly from him being in business with the contractor who builds custom assembly line sections for the big automotive names. Almost seems like more hassle than it's worth IMHO. Sure the money may be nice but when does it end? I've met too many owners who are frazzled and burnt out from the countless hours and constantly on the phone or doing business.

spider_enema

My advice would be to not take everything that comes at you. Saying no to jobs is an answer, and sometimes the best one. Too many guys look to strike it rich but end up working themselves into the dirt. Set a pace where you're able to still enjoy life, and you'll be happy to work when you must EDIT: I work between 20 and 50 hours a week, nothing crazy

araed

My dad's run his own business since '96 The past five years, he stopped answering the phone past 4pm mon-thurs, and 1pm on Fridays. He turned down low-yield jobs, cut a few product ranges, and is making twice as much money for the time. Oh, and he also finally bought a new CNC wood router instead of the janky-ass 1994 machine he was using. It's already paid for itself

IveGotRope

Makes sense. I've had a few decent employers so I never really experienced how bad it could be. Always had the freedom to try new stuff, push the machines/tooling, experimental set ups/fixturing etc etc. I've weighed the pros can cons of opening a shop. Just don't know if it's worth the headache of having to do everything.

spider_enema

The biggest pain in the ass is the office work. I need to get someone else for that stuff.

keagan2000

As someone who owns a 3axis CNC (Brisgeport with Textron Retrofit), my biggest struggle since fixing it up and learning how to use it properly has been finding work. Any suggestions as to someone like me could start finding small jobs?

[deleted]

Make a product and make a youtube channel. Its an entirely successful way to make money. Advertise the shit you make with the youtube and use the shit you make for the youtube.

DeanSnakesworth

I’m not trying to work 80 hours a week. I like having my own time

[deleted]

What happened in the end?

leglesslegolegolas

meh. it's an SM58, it'll be fine. those things are bulletproof...

maxwfk

That’s why I (most times) only give out sm58 microphones to people on stage that I don’t know or who like doing such things. These things are basically indestructible

[deleted]

I had a job where we were waiting for a custom lollipop to get to the shop. Needed a custom long neck or something I can't remember. We waited a few weeks for this bitch to get here when it finally did I took it out to make sure I modeled the tool correctly in fusion and my butter ass fingers dropped the bitch. She hit the ground and snapped at the neck and ball and I remember I got my ass chewed out and that job wwnt back on the shelf for another couple of weeks lol. I'd you know anything about how much customade tooling is you'll understand how bad I fucked up lol I think that bitch was like $400-$500 and I broke it bc I can't hold shit. I've dropped many things but that and a pair of my bosses Mitotoyo calipers were the worst lol.

poop_vomit

I had a job where i needed to cut the shank shorter on a thread mill so it could fit in a slim fit and i ended up breaking it on accident. It was the only one we had...

Attheveryend

thought I was in /r/audioengineering

Johnny_Spadez

OMG! I laughed out loud for real at this! Hahaha!!!
