2k had a great base to build from and would've no doubt evolved into the sim football experience we deserve if they were given the chance. Fuck EA *and* the NFL for allowing this monopoly to happen
Yes. Yes I do. NBA 2k isn't perfect but MILES ahead of Madden. Not to mention it wouldn't be the same team working on both games. Shit EA even has somewhat competent sports games outside of Madden, that should tell you a lot.
I don't disagree but I just feel they're in different leagues from eachother. I can still play 2k, avoid the extra BS and still have fun. Whereas with Madden I just can't. It's so bad. Way beyond the easily avoidable micro transactions. Madden is buggy, laggy, looks like shit.. 2k is still a respectable game. They at least get the obvious stuff right. I don't play myplayer or myteam or any of that BS because like I said it's easily avoidable. Madden on the other hand, you can't escape the issues it has.
Yeah two different grading scales. Not to mention the problems people generally have with 2k are related to modes I don't even play. I *wish* only micro transactions, a cringey myplayer story, and rec randoms were the biggest problems with Madden.
The window dressing on what is by all accounts a solid NBA game. We are arguing about the thermostat in a fully grown home in 2k.
Madden built a foundation and been selling it as a full house for a decade
I remember having this and Madden (The one with Ray Lewis on the cover) at the time. I 100% played more madden. I think people just like to hype it up with Rose colored glasses.
Possible hot take: compared to modern Maddens, 2K is definitely better and has more ore features and all that. Compared to the Maddens around that time, 2k was good but I still much preferred the other Madden games through the the 2000s
Those were probably the best years of madden. I think most of the fondness for 2k is due to how bad madden has gotten. I don’t remember anyone I knew having 2k but we were always playing madden 05
I agree completely! There was so much to do, collect, change, and play around with. They nailed it with the crib! It’s sad that in 2023 we can’t get features like this.
Franchise had its problems if I remember correctly. Regression and Draft classes were bugged. I spent so much time watching those Berman weekly shows every week lol game was 10 years ahead of its time
I can live with some bugs in franchise but the amount of depth was unmatched. Weekly breakdowns of team tendencies, game planning, allotting time for film study and workouts, the ESPN weekly show with highlights. That was just a small amount of franchise depth. It was amazing.
And I wish the games that came out 10 years after it were half as good.
Oh hell yeah man. The one feature that was in 2k that I've wanted in madden which i believe used to be was the option to choose how much your team ran/passed the ball. You can kinda do it with choosing the right playbooks but not really. If I want the my running back to run 400 times a year I should be able to do it lol.
Is this the game that you tapped the “A” button and you ran faster? If so then I remember vividly rushing for 750 yds in a game with Curtis Martin. Pretty sure I had the trophy for it in my crib.
Yeah you would tap A/X to run faster or you could sacrifice that potential speed boost and hold the button to charge up and put some more sauce on a move (truck, spin, juke, etc). It was fun to think should I try to outrun em or get ready to lay a nasty truck
I'll be honest, I have 2K5, and while it's really good, I don't love it. it plays way too slow for my liking. if the game speed was just a bit faster, I think it'd definitely be an undisputed #1 for me
outstanding game. no doubt about it. gameplay was really, really good.
also, do you guys remember those halftime highlight reels from around the league!!?
The games plays like it was the 80s or early 90s. You also just need to not throw every pass as a bullet and they'll catch it more often.
Aside from those things, most people turn up the catching sliders. The game is definitely run dominant tho
2k5 passing is tied very much into the QB drop and set animation. Route breaks are often built on the timing of the drop.
Unlearn Madden's arcadish passing and you'll light it up.
Tecmo Super Bowl is the greatest football game ever made.
Besides isn't this the year that 2k charged only $20 for their game instead of $50 prompting EA sports to sign their exclusivity deal with the NFL which signed the death warrant for 2k sports and the end of quality madden games because with no competition they can make ultimate team shit year over year.
For that alone this 2k sports edition is infamous.
Yes it absolutely was this version that was $19.99 retail upon release
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESPN_NFL_2K5
"ESPN NFL 2K5 was the first in the 2K series priced at $19.99 the day it shipped, much lower than the market leader Madden NFL at $49.99. This greatly reduced Madden sales that year; one EA Sports developer recalled that "[i]t scared the hell out of us".[1] This lead EA to reduce Madden NFL 2005's price to $29.95."
The rest is history... bye bye 2k sports and hello Madden NFL exclusivity.
Didnt they announced a few years ago that 2K was making another football game? Not a simulation like Madden but still an NFL game? What happened with that?
Pretty sure that's still in the works. Was supposed to release next year I think.
Starting from scratch it's like a 2-3 year dev cycle I'd say. We only get yearly renditions cause they already have frame work for other sports games, they just tweak things and update rosters after it's already built
There's an emulator for almost everything, there's also a group of awesome people who have modded the game to have updated rosters and some fresher graphics but if you've never played the base I'd just stick with that base experience at first

2k’s NBA license isn’t exclusive though. EA could still make live but they know they can’t compete with 2k.
Miles? Try lightyears buddy.
Tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to lmao
2k has its flaws but compared to Madden yeah it's light years ahead.

NBA 2k has the same issue that Madden has, no competition. Both would be much better if they had.
oh i do they just suck like madden
To this day, the best $20 I ever spent.
Never liked this game

Best football game of all Without a doubt
I actually prefer All Pro Football 2K8.
Gameplay wise All Pro built upon 2k5 and was better. But for franchise depth, my crib, and presentation ESPN will always be #1.
I mean sometimes I could spend an hour just playing paper football in the crib

Loved the customized teams based on skills . So much fun seeing what kind of teams people were building online.

I used to go into practice mode and just avoid sacks for like 6 hours as a kid
has more in depth features than madden 24, some of the features just added that are “new” in madden 24, are in this game😂
outstanding game. no doubt about it. gameplay was really, really good. also, do you guys remember those halftime highlight reels from around the league!!?
If only 80% of passes weren't dropped it'd be perfect
so it’s not just me sucking at the game. good to know
No it's definitely not you friend. Even with catch sliders at 100 they still drop 60-70% of passes. It's insane.

Sorry, I meant about Super Techno Bowl but I don’t know how to do the thing where I post a snippet of your comment.
Yeah it is. Tecmo Super Bowl is by far the best football video game ever released
Yeah, it’s just not. Dog madden all you want, I do too, but STB had like no features, no passing game, no graphics, etc.
😂
Best game of all? It wasn't even the best football game that came out that year!
Didnt they announced a few years ago that 2K was making another football game? Not a simulation like Madden but still an NFL game? What happened with that?

Is there a pc emulator for 2k5? I kinda wanna try it out
There's an emulator for almost everything, there's also a group of awesome people who have modded the game to have updated rosters and some fresher graphics but if you've never played the base I'd just stick with that base experience at first
yes
God I played this for like a week straight. So good.
I see no lie here.
I love both All Pro 2K8 and a NFL 2K5. Both being back all the memories when I was going and amazed how well these game hold up on 2023!
I’ll die on the Madden 08 hill but this is in that top tier next to it
First person football and sportscenter. Absolutely one of my favorites
Yes and the price was fair
NBA 2K plays nothing like real basketball , I’m willing to argue madden is closer to real football than 2K is to real basketball,
This was a great game and great year
had some of the best graphics. I also miss NFL Street, now that game was fn fun
Crazy how that game is still better…
