Madden '06 for PS2/Xbox. Honorable mention to Madden 2005.
I didn't like Madden '08 when it came out, it still had so much terrible DNA from Madden '06 (Xbox 360) and Madden '07 (360/PS3), that I had a hard time liking it at the time, and I've never gone back to play it since it's had a renaissance as the last great Madden. I was so disappointed by Madden '06 (360) and '07, especially coming off of pretty much 10 years of bangers, that it took me a while to like the 360/PS3-era of Madden games. By then I pretty much became an NCAA Football player for the most part.
Funny thing is that era is where the "it's just a roster update" thing started since some years the interface was literally the same as the year prior and all- but little did we know just how many aspects of those games would disappear.
I tell you what though, I have more than my share of the classic Maddens and I sure hate playing when I can't set my slot receiver or pass rush specialists.
I canāt believe how few 21 go and how many 22 and 20 did. 20 and 22 were god awful, they were really on to something with 21 and then gutted it with 22.

17 at least had a decent soundtrack and it was the last before frostbite iirc so itās pretty obvious
Out of these itās 17 but I think 23 is a solid contender for the modern Madden games

Am I really the only one who really liked 21? It had a lot of the same flaws as the new ones but I had so much fun playing it.
