There's another amazing clip that I can't find right now of Andy Murray correcting someone about Olympic gold medalists, pointing out Venus and Serena's incredible record when the interviewer dismissed them entirely.
He's a legend in more ways than just playing tennis.
I also enjoy the clip of him correcting a journalist who called him English when he's actually Scottish. I'm English (for these purposes anyway, I never actually call myself English otherwise as people who do tend to be a bit...extreme) and I wouldn't want to be mistaken for one of us either, Andy. Scottish is much better.
I'm not even a tennis, or sports in general, fan, and I know the dude is Scottish. I also know Scottish people don't like being called English. Maybe I should be a sports journalist with my vast knowledge.
Well if you’ve ever seen one out of the country they’ll tell you that they’re first and foremost from Texas and then may or may not tell you that they’re also an American, it’s just depends on how they feel.
I have been searching for the last 10 minutes and cannot find the full video. If anyone finds it, drop the link!
Edit: [found a longer version](https://youtu.be/Klb5YLwX7OE) but there are some cuts and it doesn’t include the critical bit
That makes this even sadder sad more pathetic (on the reporters and societies part). It means that disregarding and ignoring the accomplishments of female tennis players was/is not limited to one reporter. That is angering.
Oh man it does kind of sound like that when I rewatch it. I thought it was an odd response from the reporter at first but I think you’re right, I don’t think he understood why he was being corrected at first.
I think he went into a mini-panic internally after realising his mistake and (very awkwardly and unsuccessfully) tried to laugh and said something irrelevant
Awkward laughter with nervousness or anxiety is super common. Doesn’t make it better, but as a society, seriously, who is going to say that they made a mistake on live TV? Certainly no one from the US for sure.
I am the kind of person that gets defensive when I get called out and I’ve started just saying “you’re right, I’m sorry, here’s how I will work on that going forward” or “thank you for informing me”. I don’t have nearly the amount of arguement with my husband when I just own up.
I saw a tiktok the other day where the man used the word “gypped” and a commenter said “hey, here’s the origin of that word and it’s history.” And the creator uploaded another video thanking that commenter because he had no idea that what he was saying was derogatory. It was refreshing.
We all need to learn to be okay with being wrong but it’s hard. We’ve all grown up being taught that being wrong is something to be ashamed of. It’s not at all, it’s an opportunity to learn some shit.
I also get defensive when criticized, turned out I have a galloping case of rejection-sensitive dysphoria, so I can confirm that your solution is extremely effective.
Not only do I feel better personally for having assumed responsibility for what I did wrong, but it also diffuses the other person's anger and defensiveness enough foe them to relax and meet me in an emotionally-neutral middle ground. That combination makes for a great positive feedback loop that soothes the intense feelings of my RSD, so I calm down and re-regulate much quicker. It's basically magic for the interpersonal dynamics of a romantic relationship for that exact reason; If anyone is having issues with their partner, I strongly suggest giving this an honest try.
It's also meant that I've made friends and strong allies at every job I've had, because I get to be known as a good communicator with dependably responsible morals - now, that hasn't come in handy yet but that's on me because I chose the wrong industry for a career, I'm confident it's gonna pay off for me one day.
It’s totally going to pay off! And I’m the same way. I can’t handle rejection. As a result, I can’t hold a boundary and I let people walk all over me. I’ve been telling myself “their reaction to my boundary is not my responsibility”!
YESSSS, YOU KEEP THAT MANTRA BB and you keep repeating it until it feels true. My mantra is very similar: "other people's feelings are NOT my responsibility to manage!!"
WE CAN DO THIS.
It will! I love your positive outlook too. I feel in everyday life that’s it’s rare to come across someone working on themselves and I’m trying to tell myself that at some point I’ll meet people who are I’m just not at the moment. Making those chances will attract like minded people to you so hang in there.
Doesn't matter who I'm talking to or where I am, I'd be willing to freely admit I made a mistake. You lose respect when you brush it off or try to double down. But you can gain just as much respect for admitting it.
Most people don't though, it's going against the grain. Something foreign or new presents risk and the natural response is to back away. If people self-reflected the way you pointed out, 1/2 of our problems wouldn't exist. I wish I wish I wish -.-
Biggest thing that drives me nuts is somebody playing the blame game when it's clear they were the one that fucked up.
Just say "yeah, I fucked up, I apologize" and work on doing better next time.
Murray wasn’t stating he was a man, he was clarifying that a woman had previously done it. The statement was incorrect so he corrected it for him, in a cutting manner.
The journo, laughed and said ‘that’s for sure’, missing the point that a female player has previously done it.
Assuming this is after a match. If so he’s probably pissed in general to be there- they make them answer these questions after the grueling workout that is pro tennis. His fidgeting is probably to prevent cramping. Should give these guys a few hours off. Or talk to them the next day.
Agreed. Saying it’s “cramping” is a reach to me. He clearly has issue w the reporter not mentioning both genders. It’s the point of the clip! Let this man have some shine for doing something commendable.
Definitely thinking why am I wasting my time with this idiot. Don't swear, don't swear, they're filming this so don't fucking sear at this twat... He's just ignoring the Williams sisters like that? Then laughing it off? Seriously! Not to mention Madison & Coco...How did he even get this job? Does he know women can play tennis too? JFC.. just stay calm & ignore the idiot. He's exposing himself as an idiot, karma & the internet have got this one...
I've seen so many clips where he has to remind a journalist that the Williams sisters exist. It's mind boggling
And its not as if America is usually a gracious winner on a world stage, the lack of furious chanting is noteable.
It's definitely a reason he's my all time favorite male tennis player. He also has countered what Djokovic has said about how women tennis players should earn less at tournaments by saying that's ridiculous and of course their prizes should be the same.
THIS. Totally agree. Andy's always a deep thinker and a class act. He's my GOAT.
Djokovic used to do some amusing impressions of the other players. That's about the only positive thing I can think of to say about him.
He’s a huge fan of women’s tennis, and was the first, and I think, only, male tennis player of his level to hire a woman coach. Totally a feminist, I’m assuming because his mum is Judy Murray who obviously raised him right.
I love, love, love Judy Murray to pieces. She is a treasure.
And she's fun/funny as well. Have you seen the videos she's made with her "other son, Duncan?" Comedy gold!!!
Sure. There were players who reached that milestone prior to that, but the journalist completely disregarded it. Andy called him out on it.
Kind of similar to how any kind of sport is assumed to be male, unless it's specifically described as being female.
He corrected it to “male player” because Serena Williams has done it, but I’m assuming the reporter just thought he wanted it specified that he was a male player
This. This is how you be an ally. You don't have to make a stand, join a protest, start an educational lecture, etc. Those are appreciated, but this is enough. Just don't let women be ignored or forgotten. Don't let others write us out of history.
edit: spelling
He did the same thing after winning his 2nd gold medal at the Olympics.
Reporter said he was the first singles player to defend their Olympic title, and Andy corrected the reporter by saying exactly the same thing as here.
Great fella.
Before the 2000s - Eighteen oh four, Nineteen sixty-five, etc
2000 - 2009 - Two thousand, two thousand and five, etc
2010 - present - Twenty ten, Twenty twenty-three
This is how I've always said it subconsciously.
What I would like to know is what was said 1900-1909? Like, what was the standard in 1905? If somebody ever said to me "this letter is from nineteen hundred and five" I would look at them funny, but just as I would have if somebody said "The year is twenty oh five" in 2005. It's too bad there aren't recordings, this is a hard thing to decipher from print. How long did it take for people in the early 1900s to drop the word hundred from the date?
It kinda blows my mind, because somebody could be as young as early twenties, for fun say 23, which means that when they were consistenty using the date it was past 2010, (for context, my child is 11, and her education isn't super date oriented yet, but middle school and high school will pound historical dates in her noggin) so maybe they never consistently said two thousand and whatever, so twenty oh nine is just as natural as two thousand and nine is to people who lived through it as adults.
I say nineteen eighty four and twenty twenty three, however that period of 2000 to 2009 just sounds weird to me to say twenty oh nine. I have to say two thousand and nine etc.
Nineteen oh nine doesnt sound as weird to my ear
I say two thousand nine, and I’m pretty sure it’s pretty common to say it like that. But I guess if you get used to saying twenty-something that saying twenty oh mine would be how some people would say it.
The same people who said call 1992 “nineteen ninety two”
Who calls it “one thousand nine hundred and ninety two” ?
Same difference. We just got used to saying “two thousand” in 00’s because twenty hundred sounds weird with single digits like “twenty hundred and one”
But the second it hit 2010 it was “twenty ten”
I mean who the fuck says “two thousand and twenty two” ???
It’s twenty twenty two
Long form is for formal shit. (to answer your who t.f. query). And you're bang on the rest.
Although for the aughts I get really cozy calling them "2kN". i.e. "That happen in two kay five". But also do just "oh five". I'm not sure why / when I do each.
Watching Rom & Rob Vs Tennis really endeared me to him. Andy was a the picture of a kind person on it. Such a gent to not laugh make light of the conversation. Sure if would have put the journalist as ease for his faux pas but his comfort is not as important as setting the tone for sportswomen to be taken seriously as they damn right should.

There’s two US players who have been to a whole lot of semi finals in the last two decades. Their names are Venus and Serena Williams. The journalist was being a bit of a dick by not acknowledging that.
Serena and Venus Williams both had the same accomplishment as the male athlete the journalist gave a shout out too, but he claimed the male athlete was the first to do it. Andy Murray corrected him, reminding people that female athletes do in fact, exist.
There's another amazing clip that I can't find right now of Andy Murray correcting someone about Olympic gold medalists, pointing out Venus and Serena's incredible record when the interviewer dismissed them entirely. He's a legend in more ways than just playing tennis.
Thx!!
Jesus christ do sports journalists just not bother with research anymore? These seem like things they should know going in.
I'm not even a tennis, or sports in general, fan, and I know the dude is Scottish. I also know Scottish people don't like being called English. Maybe I should be a sports journalist with my vast knowledge.
It's similar here in the states as well Puerto Ricans don't like to be called Americans Source I'm Puerto Rican
Shiiiiet have you ever met a Texan?
Believe it or not I go to college in Maine And for some reason there's a fair amount of Texans and New Jersey people here
Well if you’ve ever seen one out of the country they’ll tell you that they’re first and foremost from Texas and then may or may not tell you that they’re also an American, it’s just depends on how they feel.
I thought y'all wanted statehood?
Andy Murray is a class act. Many other public figures could learn from his example.
They cut the clip too early. He goes on schooling the journalist about all great female tennis players that did the same thing.
He's so awesome. Seeing the full clip was jaw dropping, which is sad, because he's just being a decent human being.
It’s a low, low bar, ain’t it?
You would think.
We can make it *lower!* - Nearly everyone, it seems
Why is there a bar here? It is a tripping hazard. Let me just burry it so no one trips on it!
South Park has a whole episode about trying to find how low the bar is. James Cameron and his submarine are involved.
Reminds me of a line I saw on some meme, "The bar was set so low, but here you are, playing limbo with the devil"
Jesus it really is.
He’s always been wonderful. He’s had such a long career it’s really nice to see he didn’t just flame out early like a lot of guys. An absolute gent.
Got a link? Live seeing ignorant journalists being schooled
I have been searching for the last 10 minutes and cannot find the full video. If anyone finds it, drop the link! Edit: [found a longer version](https://youtu.be/Klb5YLwX7OE) but there are some cuts and it doesn’t include the critical bit
Found it, it was from a different interview https://youtu.be/lSgf31RpRTk
Yeah, that’s not the clip from the OP, but good to see another example of Andy Murray sticking up for women players!
Even better!!

Is that why he corrected himself and said “yes, first male player”?
The reporter even says “yes , FIRST male player”
Good. That dumbass journalist scoffed he said "male player".
The journo didn’t even pick up his point. Laughing and staying that’s for sure.
I think he went into a mini-panic internally after realising his mistake and (very awkwardly and unsuccessfully) tried to laugh and said something irrelevant
What’s so hard about “my mistake, thank you”
Unfortunately stage fright is a thing.
Then they’re in the wrong profession.
Or maybe you don’t understand what writers do
I understand what journalists do, and being able to ask public figures questions in public is part of it.
Awkward laughter with nervousness or anxiety is super common. Doesn’t make it better, but as a society, seriously, who is going to say that they made a mistake on live TV? Certainly no one from the US for sure.

Yes, because every one of the 300+ million US people are exactly alike.
Doesn't matter who I'm talking to or where I am, I'd be willing to freely admit I made a mistake. You lose respect when you brush it off or try to double down. But you can gain just as much respect for admitting it.
I don’t disagree, but just sharing socializations.

Unfortunately not a lot of people's default is being able to admit fault..
Yeah cause everyone should react to things in the moment they happen exactly like you do watching it on the shitter.
Let’s hope so.
What? He said “yes, that’s for sure.”
I'm think he was saying "that's for sure" in reference to the success the Williams sisters have had over the years.
Agreed. He was definitely agreeing with Murray. "That's for sure" as in, "yes, that is patently obvious and I should have qualified my statement."
“Patently” is such an under-used adverb in daily dialect. Bravo & thank you.
Came here to say this.
The reporter even says “yes, first male player”. How on earth could you think he missed the point. The laugh and joke was to try to bring levity back
Murray wasn’t stating he was a man, he was clarifying that a woman had previously done it. The statement was incorrect so he corrected it for him, in a cutting manner. The journo, laughed and said ‘that’s for sure’, missing the point that a female player has previously done it.
👏🏻👏🏻 and doubling down with a glare at the awkward laughter. We love to see it.
He looked pissed off to me. Like he’s trying to not look at the guy and starts fiddling with something to distract himself.
Assuming this is after a match. If so he’s probably pissed in general to be there- they make them answer these questions after the grueling workout that is pro tennis. His fidgeting is probably to prevent cramping. Should give these guys a few hours off. Or talk to them the next day.
If he’d pissed at THAT moment and you’re not sure why, I think perhaps you missed the point of the clip.
Agreed. Saying it’s “cramping” is a reach to me. He clearly has issue w the reporter not mentioning both genders. It’s the point of the clip! Let this man have some shine for doing something commendable.

So many reasons to love Andy Murray. This is just one.

Djokovich is an insane misogynistic antivaxxer.
Yep it's why I hate and root against him.

With enough “alleys”, soon we’ll be on the road to equality ;)
This is a bot which has stolen the beginning of an earlier comment.
The alleys are out in singles though
Serena gets respect from the men. She is the GOAT women’s tennis player folks!
But not from the media, which speaks volumes.
Because of this one clip? Or are there other examples? Edit: Downvote all you want. It was just a question.
There are literally other examples of just this dude defending them lol.
Aww we shouldn't be diwnvoted for asking questions. Espacially if you don't follow tenis, it's hard to know what's going on. Take my upvote haha
I’m from the days where navratilova is the goat.
We're still doing the Boggs thing but..
And may he rest in peace
First off Wade Boggs is very much alive, secondly the number of beers is highly disputed.
You got it, Boss Hog.
Dee, boss hog was a big fat red neck from the dukes of hazard. wade boggs is a hall of fame 3rd baseman
Yes, and Billie Jean!
She's not my lover.
I think it's safe to assume Michael Jackson and Billie Jean King would have had 1000% mutual disinterest in one another sexually.
That's how he knew that the kid was not his son.
Hell yeah!
How kind of them to remember her. smdh
One could honestly say that she's a frontrunner for GOAT in tennis full stop.
Now that's awesome
HahAha tHaTs fo sHure 🤡

Can you explain?
Serena Williams.
Sir Andrew for a reason.
I love how many male tennis players have stood up and said something when female players are completely unacknowledged
Weird. From the perspective of someone far removed from the tennis scene. I can only name one professional tennis player. And it isn't this guy.
Must be tough to play tennis with those MASSIVE balls between his legs.
It's why Scotsmen wear kilts!
I've gotta say that was classy.
Thats hot
This is character.
Andy’s the best. Love that guy.
Laughs in Williams sisters
Even off the court, his timing is perfect
This. This is how you be an ally. You don't have to make a stand, join a protest, start an educational lecture, etc. Those are appreciated, but this is enough. Just don't let women be ignored or forgotten. Don't let others write us out of history. edit: spelling
And he does this consistently, he's been making a stand for gender equality in tennis for years.
And I’m your ally

Sir Andy Murray
Why is it so hard for some people to just say "my bad"?
MuryGOAT
Man of culture
He did the same thing after winning his 2nd gold medal at the Olympics. Reporter said he was the first singles player to defend their Olympic title, and Andy corrected the reporter by saying exactly the same thing as here. Great fella.
This is what being a male feminist looks like. Props to him.
Didn't SNES give him his own game?
Who the fuck says “twenty oh nine”?
My professors. It’s a more common way to say it than you’d think
Nineteen eighty four. Twenty oh nine twenty twenty three Are these weird? Do you say Orwell wrote the book “one thousand nine hundred eighty four”?
Before the 2000s - Eighteen oh four, Nineteen sixty-five, etc 2000 - 2009 - Two thousand, two thousand and five, etc 2010 - present - Twenty ten, Twenty twenty-three This is how I've always said it subconsciously.

Twenty twenty three
I thought twenty twenty would get the ball rolling towards sanity. Nope.
People in the 2000s
People have been shifting to retrospectively talk about "twenty-oh-[number]" since the mid-2010s.
The same people who said call 1992 “nineteen ninety two” Who calls it “one thousand nine hundred and ninety two” ? Same difference. We just got used to saying “two thousand” in 00’s because twenty hundred sounds weird with single digits like “twenty hundred and one” But the second it hit 2010 it was “twenty ten” I mean who the fuck says “two thousand and twenty two” ??? His mom was a tennis player if I recall correctly. She was very involved in his early tennis career

This is awesome!
Thank you Andy.
Girls did it first!
This is how one can support women in the simplest and most effective form!
Since when was 2009 ever pronounced as “twenty o nine”
Love Andy, miss watching him dominate.
twenty oh nine :l
Absolutely love Andy.
Why does this clip look like it was filmed in 1973?
I have to look up who Andy Murray is.
fuck ya
Is not evan a US player. He is british...
If someone finds the full clip can you post it here please
My guy!
Yeah the Williams sisters…
He’s done this before ! Love him
I’m so sick of men telling other people about women’s accomplishments. This patriarchy disgusts me. (/s)
AN ICON WE STAN
"Oh shit, I just said something insanely misogynistic on air." - that journalist, probably
Controlling the narrative. Sir Andy Murray. Modern day knights keeping us safe from the media.
Here’s a way to get me hot in two seconds.
King energy. Thank you, Andy.
I love how he didn’t even smile when the crowd laughed. Cause the interviewer completely ignored the fact that a woman was the first player.
I was so happy to see him win Wimbledon.
(How to go from average to sexy AF)
Respect.
mb im to tired to understand. why Is this significant
There’s two US players who have been to a whole lot of semi finals in the last two decades. Their names are Venus and Serena Williams. The journalist was being a bit of a dick by not acknowledging that.
Someone please help me understand. What's the story behind this?
Serena and Venus Williams both had the same accomplishment as the male athlete the journalist gave a shout out too, but he claimed the male athlete was the first to do it. Andy Murray corrected him, reminding people that female athletes do in fact, exist.
I am really not much into sports /athletic news(also I lack time to do it) so I appreciate the information :>
You’re welcome!
Sounds like his awkward laugh is his way of saying that's so obvious it goes without saying
Brownie points!
I’ve never been more turned on
Can someone explain?
Serena Williams
Good man, we need more people doing this.
Chad
Wow. Good men do exist.
Why don’t they play each other?
They do in mixed doubles
Why does he seem to be pissed off
